For a more comfortable gaming setup, adjust the chair and desk first, then position the screen, keyboard and mouse, reduce glare, and break up long stretches of sitting. The measurements below are starting points for seated PC gaming and desk use—not universal prescriptions. For console or couch gaming, use the same principles: support your body, view the screen comfortably, and change position regularly.
1. Fit the chair and desk to your body
Sit back so the chair supports your back, then adjust its height so your feet rest on the floor. If raising the chair helps you bring your arms into a comfortable position at the desk, check your feet and thighs again; use a footrest if your feet no longer reach the floor, and make sure your thighs have clearance beneath the desk.
The key is fit and adjustability, not a gaming label. OSHA describes a well-designed, appropriately adjusted chair as an essential part of a safe and productive computer workstation. A gaming-branded chair is not required; choose seating that supports your back, fits your body and works with your desk height.
2. Position the monitor in front of you
Center your main screen directly in front of your body so you do not have to keep turning your head. Place it far enough away that you can read without leaning forward. OSHA gives a generally preferred viewing distance of 20–40 inches (50–100 cm), while the NIH Office of Research Services suggests about 20–26 inches (roughly arm’s length). Treat both as reference ranges: screen size, text size, vision needs and your posture affect what feels comfortable.

As a starting point, set the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. OSHA places the screen’s center generally 15–20 degrees below horizontal eye level; HSE’s workstation illustration puts the top level with the eyes and the screen about an arm’s length away. These are ways to avoid looking sharply up or down, not a single mandatory angle. Adjust the screen so you can view it clearly while sitting in a supported, relaxed position.
3. Keep keyboard and mouse close
Put frequently used controls in front of you and within easy reach. Avoid reaching, twisting, shrugging your shoulders or sharply bending your wrists. HSE’s standard workstation illustration places the keyboard just below elbow height and the mouse in line with the elbow; OSHA similarly advises arranging the keyboard and pointing device to avoid awkward wrist angles.

These principles apply to keyboard-and-mouse play and can guide controller placement in a console setup. You do not need a special gaming peripheral to make the basic arrangement work, and the cited guidance does not establish that a vertical or ergonomic mouse is best for every player.
4. Reduce glare and tune the display
Where possible, place the monitor perpendicular to a window rather than facing it or sitting with the window directly behind it. Avoid direct lighting that creates reflections on the screen, then adjust brightness and contrast until the display is comfortable to view. OSHA includes viewing clarity and time spent looking at a display among relevant considerations; NIH also advises reducing glare from windows and direct lighting.

If your current furniture makes positioning difficult, consider an adjustable monitor stand or arm that is compatible with your display and desk and lets you center and tilt the screen. A monitor support is useful only if it helps you reach a comfortable viewing position.
5. Break up long static stretches
Use natural pauses—between matches, rounds or other transitions—to stand, move or change position. OSHA notes that prolonged static screen viewing can fatigue neck and shoulder muscles and says short rest breaks may be appropriate for prolonged static or repetitive tasks. Its guidance does not set a universal gaming break interval.

Cleveland Clinic’s gamer guide suggests the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Treat that as a visual-break suggestion from the guide, not a guarantee of an outcome or a replacement for moving and changing posture.

- Back: Sit back so the chair supports you; check that the chair and desk height work together.
- Feet or thighs: Support your feet on the floor or a footrest, and check for comfortable thigh clearance under the desk.
- Neck: Center the screen in front of you and adjust its height and distance so you can view it without repeatedly turning or leaning.
- Wrists or shoulders: Bring the keyboard and mouse closer, keep them in front, and avoid sharply bent wrists or raised shoulders.
- Eyes or screen visibility: Reduce reflections and adjust brightness and contrast for comfortable viewing.
Persistent pain, numbness or vision symptoms should not be assumed to come from setup alone. Seek appropriate professional guidance rather than relying on an ergonomic adjustment to diagnose or resolve them.

Choosing an adjustment or accessory
Start with the furniture and equipment you already have. If something cannot be positioned comfortably, compare options by the job they need to do:
- Chair: Look for adjustability, back support, a fit that suits the user, compatibility with desk height and the ability to keep feet supported.
- Footrest: Check whether its height or angle can be adjusted and whether it supports your feet without obstructing leg movement.
- Monitor stand or arm: Check height and tilt adjustment, compatibility with your display and desk, and whether it lets the screen sit centered at a comfortable distance.
These are functional selection criteria, not endorsements of a brand or model. The available guidance does not show that a premium gaming chair is better than a suitable office chair.
