How to Build a Microscale New York City Skyline With LEGO

Build the skyline in five decisions: fix the display footprint, choose a deliberate group of landmarks, establish one relative-height scale, give every building a distinctive silhouette, and add facade detail only where it improves recognition. The retired LEGO Architecture New York City set 21028 is the most useful documented benchmark: it combines the Flatiron Building, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, One World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty in a compact display model. Its published specifications are a reference point, not a parts list or size requirement for a custom MOC.

A successful microscale skyline is read from a distance. Start with massing and spacing, test the outline against your chosen footprint, then refine roofs, crowns, setbacks and a few facade textures. Do not begin by trying to reproduce every window. At this scale, a stable base and unmistakable top profiles matter more than exhaustive surface detail.

What the official New York City model establishes

LEGO’s official product listing for New York City 21028 describes a skyline assembled from five landmarks:

LEGO says its skyline sets are scaled to represent the comparative size of each structure and use true-to-life color depiction. That principle is more useful for a custom build than copying an arbitrary number of bricks: viewers should understand which buildings are taller, broader or more slender even when the whole model fits on a small shelf.

Published detail What it means for your project
598 pieces This is the piece count of set 21028, not a target for a custom skyline.
10 inches high The finished height of the official set, including its tallest elements.
9 inches wide A useful compact display-width reference for planning, not a required custom dimension.
1 inch deep The official model is unusually shallow; a custom base can be deeper if stability or street depth requires it.
Retired status LEGO identifies 21028 as retired, so current stock, condition and price depend on the seller and are not guaranteed.

Those figures describe the packaged model only. They do not specify the real-world scale of New York City, the dimensions of a new MOC, or the number of parts you will need. LEGO’s official description summarizes the design goal this way: Each set is scaled to give an accurate representation of the comparative size of each structure, with true-to-life color depiction.

Decide the footprint before selecting parts

Measure the shelf, desk or cabinet where the skyline will live. Record the maximum width and depth, then reserve a little clearance around the base so the model can be lifted without catching neighboring objects. The official set’s 9-inch width and 1-inch depth show how compact a display can be, but copying those dimensions is optional.

Choose a base shape

A long, shallow rectangle emphasizes a horizon line and works well for a front-facing skyline. A deeper base gives you room to stagger buildings, imply streets or parks, and hide connections behind the front row. A stepped or irregular outline can suggest a waterfront, but it is harder to align and transport. Pick one shape before you design individual towers; otherwise a detailed building may consume space needed for the skyline’s overall rhythm.

Leave room for spacing

Do not allocate every available position to a tower. Narrow gaps are valuable visual separators, especially between the Chrysler and Empire State silhouettes. A small open area can also make the Statue of Liberty legible instead of allowing it to disappear into a wall of buildings. Mark approximate building centers on the base with temporary plates or paper labels before committing to permanent construction.

Write a one-page design brief

Before opening your parts boxes, write down:

  • Maximum finished width and depth.
  • Whether the model is viewed straight on, from a corner, or from several sides.
  • The landmark lineup and the reason for each choice.
  • The tallest element and the intended relative height of every other structure.
  • Where removable sections, if any, will separate for transport.

This brief prevents late changes from forcing you to rebuild the entire base.

Choose a landmark lineup that tells a clear story

The five-building-and-monument lineup from 21028 is a strong starting point because each subject has a different outline. You can use the same group, substitute another New York landmark, or focus on a borough, waterfront or historical era. New York has no single definitive five-landmark list, so explain your selection through the composition rather than implying that one lineup represents the whole city.

Use contrast, not just fame

A compact skyline benefits from contrasting shapes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Flatiron Building: a triangular, wedge-like mass creates a low, broad counterpoint to the towers.
  • Chrysler Building: its ornate, stepped crown is recognizable even when reduced to a few layers.
  • Empire State Building: setbacks and a central spire create a strong vertical profile.
  • One World Trade Center: a tall, faceted taper and spire distinguish it from older rectangular towers.
  • Statue of Liberty: a small isolated figure reads best when it has open space around it.

These are silhouette priorities, not instructions to reproduce every architectural feature. If your chosen footprint cannot support all five, keep the landmarks whose outlines provide the greatest variety and state what viewpoint or theme the shortened lineup represents.

Set the viewpoint

Decide whether the front edge represents a single postcard-like view or whether the model should reward movement around it. A front-facing design can put the most recognizable facades toward one side and use shallow depth. A walk-around model needs backs and sides that remain stable and visually intentional. The choice affects where you place windows, side studs, attachment points and removable sections.

Establish one relative scale

Microscale does not mean that every real-world measurement is converted at exactly the same physical ratio unless you deliberately choose that system. It means the whole composition is reduced enough that buildings are represented by compact masses and signature details. Keep one convention throughout the model so the skyline does not contain a tiny One World Trade Center beside an oversized Empire State Building.

Use the tallest element as your reference

  1. Choose the maximum height. Count the brick or plate layers your footprint can support without making the model unstable. Treat this as a design limit, not a claim about the official set.
  2. Assign relative heights. Place each other tower below that ceiling according to the comparative scale you want the viewer to perceive. The official 21028 model is explicitly designed around comparative structure sizes.
  3. Reserve height for signature tops. A crown, antenna or torch often needs only a few elements, but those elements must fit inside the height plan.
  4. Check the skyline as a flat outline. Photograph or sketch the model from the intended viewing angle. If two landmarks merge into one block, alter height or spacing before adding facade detail.

Brick Architect’s published scale calculations for official skyline models, including 21028, can help you think about how real-building height translates into LEGO height. Use that material as a comparative reference rather than as a custom parts prescription; the calculations do not remove the need to fit your own footprint and inventory.

Prioritize silhouette over window count

At a small scale, a single setback or crown can communicate more than a grid of tiny windows. Build the main volume first, step back from it, and ask whether the landmark is identifiable in plain color. Only then add a contrasting strip, grille tile, slope or transparent element where it supports the outline.

Design each landmark as a compact mass

Flatiron Building

Start with a narrow triangular footprint that widens toward the rear. Keep the front point distinct from neighboring plates so the wedge remains visible. A shallow, stepped facade can imply the taper without requiring a separate window on every level. Its lower profile makes it useful near the front or at one end of the composition.

Chrysler Building

Build a tall central shaft and devote a small number of layers to the stepped crown. The crown is the identity cue, so preserve its taper and repeated arcs or points even if the body is mostly smooth. Avoid making the base so wide that the crown appears attached to a generic block.

Empire State Building

Represent the tower as a sequence of setbacks leading to a narrow upper section and spire. The transitions between levels should be visible in the outline. A uniform rectangular column with a pin on top will read as a generic skyscraper, so spend parts on the setbacks before adding surface pattern.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

One World Trade Center

Use a tall, clean profile with a taper or faceted transition toward the top and a clear spire. Its visual role is modern contrast: keep the facade less ornate than the Chrysler crown and separate it from similarly straight towers with either spacing or a change in color value.

Statue of Liberty

Treat the statue as a small vertical accent rather than a miniature building. A narrow support, raised arm or torch-like top, and an open patch of base around it are more important than tiny facial or robe details. If it is placed directly against a tower, increase the gap or adjust the color so the outline does not vanish.

Build the base and structure in a stable order

A skyline that looks accurate but flexes when lifted will be frustrating to display. Assemble from the foundation upward and test each major section before adding fragile crowns.

  1. Connect the base. Use overlapping plates or another connection pattern that prevents seams from lining up in a single break. Check that the footprint remains flat on the display surface.
  2. Mark building positions. Lay temporary plates at each planned center and verify the spacing from the front and sides.
  3. Build the largest masses first. Construct the main bodies of the tallest towers without fine facade pieces. This reveals whether the composition is too dense or lopsided.
  4. Check vertical alignment. Look from the front, both corners and above. Correct leaning sections before they become enclosed.
  5. Add setbacks and tapers. Use stepped layers, narrower plates or slopes to create each landmark’s outline.
  6. Attach crowns and spires last. These parts are vulnerable during handling. Give them a positive connection and test the model by lifting the base, never by the tower.
  7. Add the Statue of Liberty and other small accents. Place them only after the surrounding masses leave enough visual separation.
  8. Apply facade texture selectively. Install repeating tiles or grille elements in small test areas first, then continue only if the pattern improves readability and does not weaken the structure.

Use facade techniques that fit the scale

A Brickset review of 21028 documents one especially useful technique on its Empire State Building: 1×1 bricks with side studs provide attachment points for 1×2 grille tiles used as facade cladding. This is a real construction detail from the official model, not a universal solution for every scale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When side-stud detailing helps

Side studs let you place a texture perpendicular to the tower’s main stack, which can create a convincing vertical or horizontal rhythm on a narrow face. Test the technique on a short wall first. Confirm that the grille tiles sit flush, that the side-stud bricks are locked into the surrounding structure, and that the added depth still fits your display clearance.

When to leave a face plain

Do not cover every surface automatically. Dense texture can blur a tower’s setbacks, make a small building look oversized, or add weight to a fragile upper section. A plain dark or light face may communicate glass, stone or shadow more effectively than a noisy pattern. Use one or two repeated motifs per landmark and reserve the most detailed treatment for the facade the viewer will see first.

Plan parts without pretending there is a universal inventory

No verified custom parts list exists for this design approach, and the exact quantity depends on your footprint, scale convention, colors and existing collection. Inventory what you already own before buying anything.

Part category Likely role Planning question
Large plates and basic bricks Base, cores and structural walls Can the pieces span seams and support the tallest mass?
Small plates and tiles Setbacks, ledges, roof bands and clean surfaces Do you have enough matching pieces to keep repeated levels consistent?
Side-stud elements Perpendicular facade attachment Will the added depth fit the chosen viewing clearance?
Grille tiles or similar textured pieces Selective window or cladding rhythm Does a test patch improve recognition without overwhelming the silhouette?
Slopes and tapered elements Crowns, roofs and faceted transitions Can the pieces form the intended outline without unsupported overhangs?
Small specialty elements Spires, antennas, torches and other identity cues Can each fragile accent be attached securely for handling?

After the inventory, make a short missing-parts list grouped by function rather than ordering every possible color variation. Source only what the design actually requires. Loose bricks, plates, tiles and specialty elements are a practical route for a custom MOC, but no exact quantities or marketplace availability are established here.

Choose between the packaged set and an original MOC

Route Advantages Trade-offs
Build set 21028 Documented landmark lineup, published piece count and finished dimensions, plus an instruction-led experience. LEGO marks it retired; current stock, condition and price vary, and you inherit its footprint and design choices.
Design a custom MOC Control over footprint, viewpoint, era, landmarks, colors and structural depth; can use bricks already on hand. You must solve scale, stability, spacing, part sourcing and instructions yourself. No tested universal parts list or step-by-step recipe is established.

If your priority is a known display model, investigate the retired set through a seller and verify condition and completeness before purchase. If your priority is a particular shelf, borough or visual theme, start with the custom workflow and treat 21028 as a visual benchmark rather than a shopping specification.

A practical custom-MOC workflow

  1. Measure the display location. Write the usable width, depth and height, including clearance for lifting the base.
  2. Select the lineup. Begin with the five 21028 subjects or document any substitutions and the viewpoint they represent.
  3. Sketch the skyline. Draw each landmark as a simple block and outline its signature top before touching parts.
  4. Set the height convention. Choose the tallest allowable mass and assign the other structures relative heights.
  5. Lay out temporary footprints. Use spare plates, paper or labels to test spacing and the location of open areas.
  6. Build structural cores. Make the base and main bodies strong enough to lift as one assembly or in planned modules.
  7. Shape the silhouettes. Add Flatiron’s wedge, Chrysler’s crown, Empire State setbacks, One World Trade Center’s taper and spire, and the Statue of Liberty’s isolated accent.
  8. Photograph a plain test build. Review the outline from the actual viewing angle and correct confusing overlaps.
  9. Inventory the remaining details. Identify only the plates, tiles, grille pieces, slopes and specialty elements needed for approved changes.
  10. Texture selectively and test handling. Add facade patches, crowns and small accents, then lift the finished base to expose weak connections.
  11. Record revisions. Keep a simple parts count and photograph each module so repairs or future rebuilding do not depend on memory.

Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often

Symptom Likely cause Correction
The skyline looks like one solid wall. Buildings are too close or their heights are too similar. Open a gap, lower one mass, or move a distinctive crown forward or sideways.
A landmark is not recognizable. The silhouette cue was replaced by generic facade detail. Remove texture temporarily and rebuild the wedge, setback, taper or crown first.
The tallest tower leans. The core has weak overlaps, an unsupported taper or a loose base connection. Reinforce the core and base before adding more surface pieces; test by lifting the base.
The Statue of Liberty disappears. It is crowded against a tower or lacks contrast. Move it into open space, raise its support slightly, or change the surrounding color value.
Facade pieces keep falling off. Side-stud or grille-tile attachments are carrying too much unsupported weight. Shorten the textured run, add structural backing, or leave the upper face plain.
The model fits the shelf but not the intended view. Depth and orientation were chosen without checking corner angles. Rotate the base through the real viewing positions and redesign exposed sides before final detailing.
Colors make separate towers merge. Adjacent masses use similar tones and have little spacing. Use true-to-life color intent as a guide, but introduce a restrained contrast or a wider gap where the outline needs help.

Finish and display the skyline

Clean the base edges and hide avoidable connection gaps along the front. Keep removable sections aligned with natural breaks, such as a street strip or open waterfront, rather than cutting through a crown. If the model is handled often, favor robust connections over delicate overhangs and store fragile spires separately.

View the completed skyline at the height and distance where it will normally be seen. A detail that is impressive at arm’s length may disappear on a shelf, while a strong silhouette remains readable. Take one straight-on photograph and one corner photograph for your build notes; both reveal spacing problems that are easy to miss while looking down at the model.

What this method can—and cannot—promise

The documented facts are limited to the official 21028 reference, LEGO’s comparative-scale description, Brick Architect’s scale calculations for official skyline models, and Brickset’s reported Empire State Building facade technique. They support a disciplined design method, not a guaranteed custom recipe. Your finished height, width, depth, piece count, colors and stability will depend on the parts available and the choices recorded in your design brief.

Use the official set to understand the landmark mix and compact presentation. Use your own footprint and inventory to determine the MOC. When the skyline is judged from its outline first, even a very small build can communicate New York City without requiring a miniature copy of every window.
