Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA reliable MarkLogic vulnerability patch is a controlled change, not simply an installer run. Start by proving which vulnerability, MarkLogic build, operating system, architecture, cluster configuration, and application paths are in scope. Select a target release whose fixed-issue record and platform support match that inventory, create a tested recovery path, apply the version-specific upgrade procedure, and close the change only when both infrastructure health and security-relevant application behavior are evidenced.
What the checklist must establish
Your checklist should let a reviewer answer five questions without inference:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Which vulnerability or advisory is being remediated, and which MarkLogic component is affected?
- Which exact hosts, clusters, operating systems, architectures, databases, and applications are in scope?
- Why is the selected MarkLogic release supported on those hosts and expected to resolve the identified issue?
- How can the service and data be recovered if the upgrade fails or an incompatibility appears?
- What evidence proves that the patch was installed and that the vulnerable behavior is no longer present in the deployment?
Keep the checklist tied to a change record. Record the owner, maintenance window, stop/go authority, communication channel, and the evidence location before touching a production node.

1. Establish scope and applicability
Capture the vulnerability facts
Write down the advisory or vulnerability identifier, severity assigned by your responsible security source, affected component, disclosure date if relevant to your policy, and the vendor fixed-issue reference. A release-line label such as “MarkLogic 11” does not by itself prove that every 11.x installation is affected or that every 11.x maintenance release fixes the issue. Match the issue details to the exact installed build and component.

Inventory every environment
Collect the following for each development, staging, disaster-recovery, and production environment. Treat a cluster as one change only after every host and dependency has been inventoried.
| Inventory item | What to record | Why it changes the patch plan |
|---|---|---|
| MarkLogic software | Major, minor, maintenance, and patch version on every host | Determines affected range, available fixes, intermediary upgrades, and whether the documented procedure applies |
| Operating system | Distribution, version, architecture, image or package source | Target releases can add or remove platform support; an otherwise valid package may not be supported |
| Topology | Host count, groups, zones, failover configuration, forests, replicas, and cluster roles | Ordering, quorum, replication, and downtime decisions differ between standalone and clustered systems |
| Databases | Content databases plus Security and Schemas database placement and replication | Upgrade ordering and compatibility rules depend on these databases |
| Optional components | Converters and other installed MarkLogic packages | The 10.0-1-or-later to 12 procedure explicitly addresses uninstalling and reinstalling converters |
| Applications | Client drivers, API versions, authentication methods, indexes, scheduled jobs, and workload-specific functions | Release incompatibilities can appear as application or authorization failures even when servers start normally |
Check the official applicability records
Use the MarkLogic 11 release notes and MarkLogic 12 release notes to compare the installed build, vulnerability identifier, fixed issue, operating system, and architecture with the proposed target. Save the relevant release-note section or issue reference in the change record. If the advisory is from another source, reconcile its affected-version statement with Progress’s fixed-issue information rather than assuming the advisory’s version range maps perfectly to your installation.
2. Select a supported target release
Choose the smallest supported change that resolves the issue and fits your platform, compatibility, and availability requirements. A newer release may contain the fix but still be unsuitable because of operating-system support, required reindexing, API changes, or cluster constraints.

| MarkLogic 11.3.7 | Released September 10, 2026; described as a patch and security update to MarkLogic 11.3 LTS | Evaluate it when remaining on the 11.3 LTS line satisfies the fixed-issue and compatibility requirements |
| MarkLogic 11.3.7 platform caveat | Does not support Amazon Linux 2, which reached end of life on June 30, 2026 | Do not schedule this target on Amazon Linux 2; plan a supported operating-system migration or another supported target |
| MarkLogic 12.1.0 | Released September 10, 2026; described as a feature and security update to the MarkLogic 12 innovation release | Treat it as a broader release change and test application behavior, operational tooling, and compatibility before production use |
| MarkLogic 12.0.3 | Described as a patch update containing bug fixes and security patches; notes identify known incompatibilities with MarkLogic 12.0.1 and earlier | Check the incompatibility list and source version before selecting it; do not infer that all 12.x systems can move without an intermediary or application work |
These dated releases demonstrate current release activity; they are not a universal recommendation to move every deployment to MarkLogic 12. Recheck the release notes immediately before execution because support matrices, fixed issues, and known incompatibilities can change.
Apply the current-major prerequisite
The documented path from MarkLogic 10.0-1 or later to MarkLogic 12 recommends first upgrading to the latest maintenance release of the currently deployed major version. Record that intermediate version and confirm that it is supported on the operating system before planning the destination upgrade. Follow the source and target procedure that matches your actual versions; do not generalize the 10-to-12 sequence to every maintenance patch.

Check language-baseline and compatibility prerequisites
Upgrading to MarkLogic 11.3 or later requires the cluster language baseline to be ml9. If the cluster still uses the legacy baseline, schedule the required reindex before the upgrade and allow time to validate index behavior and workload performance. Review the MarkLogic 11 and 12 upgrade incompatibility material for changed behavior, removed features, and application updates. Keep the compatibility findings as explicit go/no-go criteria rather than informal notes.
3. Prepare a recoverable change
Back up what the upgrade can make incompatible
Take a complete backup of content databases and security databases before the upgrade. Verify that the backup completed, is readable from the recovery environment, and can be restored by the people who would perform the recovery. Include backup identifiers, timestamps, retention, encryption or key dependencies, and the restore runbook in the change record.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Progress’s installation documentation states: “MarkLogic Server does not support downgrades.” The same documentation explains that MarkLogic 12 upgrades content databases so they cannot then be used with earlier server versions. Consequently, a backup that merely exists is not enough; it must be usable for the restore path your organization has approved. See Upgrades and Database Compatibility and Upgrading from Previous Releases — MarkLogic 11.
Define pre-change acceptance checks
Run and record a baseline before maintenance begins. Use checks that represent your deployment, such as:
- Cluster and host health, including alarms, service state, disk capacity, and time synchronization.
- Database state, forest availability, replica status, and expected failover posture.
- Representative reads and writes through the production client path.
- Authentication, authorization, role inheritance, and access to protected content.
- Queries, indexes, converters, scheduled jobs, or custom functions implicated by the vulnerability or by the target release’s compatibility notes.
These are deployment-specific acceptance tests, not a universal MarkLogic test suite. Define expected results and owners for each test so a failure has an immediate decision path.

Set the change controls
- Name the change owner and the technical approver.
- Set start and finish times, user-impact expectations, and an escalation contact.
- Define stop conditions, such as loss of quorum, unrecoverable database errors, failed backup verification, or a security test that still reproduces the vulnerable behavior.
- Define the restore decision point and the maximum time allowed for diagnosis before recovery begins.
- Notify application owners, security, support, and incident-management contacts about the sequence and evidence they must provide.
4. Plan cluster ordering and availability
Use the cluster procedure, not a single-host shortcut
A clustered deployment has database placement, replication, quorum, and host-order requirements that a standalone installation does not. Follow the exact cluster upgrade procedure for the source and target releases. The MarkLogic 11 instructions specify that the host containing the Security and Schemas databases should be upgraded first. Replicated Security databases can require additional documented steps, so confirm the topology before choosing an order.
For high-availability systems, determine whether the documented rolling-upgrade approach applies to the exact configuration and target. Progress describes rolling upgrades as enabling large HA clusters to upgrade without downtime or transaction interruption, but that description does not remove the need to confirm prerequisites, client behavior, capacity, and service objectives for your own deployment. See Rolling Upgrades.
Account for capacity during the window
During a rolling operation, upgraded and non-upgraded hosts may coexist temporarily. Verify that the remaining hosts can handle expected query, ingest, and failover load. Confirm replication lag thresholds, forest assignment, connection-pool behavior, and monitoring coverage. If the target procedure requires a full outage, communicate the outage explicitly instead of describing it as a rolling upgrade.
5. Execute the version-specific patch
The following sequence is a documented example for upgrading from MarkLogic 10.0-1 or later to MarkLogic 12. It is not a universal command sequence for every maintenance release. Substitute the procedure that Progress publishes for your actual source, target, platform, and topology.
- Confirm the gate. Verify the approved target, fixed issue, platform support, backup evidence, maintenance window, and stop/go authority.
- Bring the current major version to its latest maintenance release. Complete and verify this prerequisite when following the documented 10.0-1-or-later to 12 path.
- Stop the MarkLogic server. For a cluster, stop or drain hosts according to the cluster procedure and preserve the required database ordering.
- Uninstall the prior release. The documented procedure includes removing the old release and addressing converters if they are installed.
- Install the target release. Install converters as required by the application and the target procedure. Confirm package architecture and operating-system prerequisites before starting the service.
- Start MarkLogic. Monitor service startup and host health rather than moving immediately to application traffic.
- Open the Admin Interface. Use
http://localhost:8001on the relevant host and complete the prompted database and configuration upgrade confirmation described by the procedure. - Repeat the approved sequence for the remaining hosts. In a cluster, preserve the documented order, replication health, and rolling-upgrade gates.
- Record evidence. Capture installed-version output, package logs, Admin Interface confirmation, host and cluster status, alarms, and timestamps for each host.
For exact prerequisites and procedure changes, use Upgrading from Release 10.0-1 or Later. Do not improvise package removal, database conversion, or cluster ordering from a different release’s instructions.

6. Verify the patch and the service
Verification should prove both installation state and security outcome. An installer finishing successfully is not evidence by itself that the vulnerability is remediated.
| Verification gate | Evidence to capture | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Target version | Version output or Admin Interface record for every intended host | Every host reports the approved release and no host is unintentionally left on the old build |
| Cluster health | Host, group, forest, replica, and alarm status before and after the change | Expected hosts and databases are online, replicas converge, and unexplained alarms are resolved or formally accepted |
| Database/configuration upgrade | Admin Interface confirmation and upgrade logs | The prompted upgrade completes without an error requiring operator action |
| Data availability | Representative reads, writes, queries, and forest checks | Results match the pre-change acceptance criteria |
| Security behavior | Safe, approved validation of the affected feature or input path | The vulnerable behavior cannot be reproduced under the test conditions, or the residual risk is escalated and the change is not closed |
| Application compatibility | Client, authentication, authorization, converter, job, and workload test results | Application owners accept results and no unexplained compatibility or authorization errors remain |
| Observability | Server and application logs compared with the baseline | No new startup, compatibility, replication, or access-control error pattern is unexplained |
| Recovery evidence | Backup identifier, verification result, and restore-test or approved recovery evidence | The organization can identify the recovery artifact and execute the documented restore path |
Validate the vulnerability safely
Use a non-destructive proof tailored to the vulnerability: a vendor-supplied check, a harmless request that exercises the affected parser or endpoint, or a controlled security-test case approved by your security team. Avoid exploit payloads against production unless your authorization explicitly permits them. Record the test identity, target host, timestamp, expected safe result, observed result, and log references. If the test cannot be performed safely, state that limitation and obtain an alternative assurance method; do not mark the vulnerability fixed solely from the package version.
Close only after evidence review
The change owner should attach version records, cluster status, test output, relevant logs, backup and restore evidence, and application-owner approval. Security should confirm that the selected fixed-issue record addresses the original identifier. Close the change only after all stop conditions are cleared or an explicit risk decision is recorded.
7. Troubleshoot common failure branches
The target package is unsupported on the operating system
Stop before installation. Recheck the release platform matrix and select a supported target or plan an operating-system migration. The MarkLogic 11.3.7 exclusion for Amazon Linux 2 illustrates why a version that fixes the issue may still be unusable on the current host.
The upgrade requests an unexpected intermediary
Do not bypass the request. Compare the source version with the documented upgrade path, move first to the latest maintenance release of the current major version when required, and confirm database-compatibility rules. Escalate if the path is not documented for your exact combination.
Best Value
The cluster will not reach healthy status
Pause the sequence. Check host reachability, quorum, Security and Schemas database placement, forest and replica state, disk space, and alarms. Do not continue to additional hosts while the required ordering or replication state is unhealthy. Use the cluster-specific procedure and preserve logs for escalation.
Applications fail after servers start
Compare authentication, authorization, query, converter, and client-driver errors with the release incompatibility notes. Keep traffic on the approved fallback path if available, capture a minimal reproducible transaction, and involve the application owner. A healthy Admin Interface does not prove application compatibility.
The security validation still reproduces the issue
Stop closure and treat the result as an open remediation. Confirm that every intended host was upgraded, that traffic is not reaching an old node, and that the test targets the fixed component and configuration. If the selected release does not address the issue, return to target selection rather than weakening the test.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Recovery is required
Invoke the pre-approved restore decision. Because MarkLogic does not support downgrades and upgraded content databases may be unusable by earlier server versions, do not attempt an ad-hoc binary downgrade. Preserve logs and change evidence, protect the backup artifact, and follow the documented restore procedure for the recovered version.
8. Make the checklist reusable
Store the checklist as a versioned operational document with fields that can be completed for each advisory:
- Advisory, severity, affected component, fixed-issue reference, and security owner.
- Environment, host list, MarkLogic builds, operating systems, architectures, topology, database placement, converters, and application owners.
- Approved target and any intermediary release, with links to the applicable release notes and upgrade procedure.
- Language baseline and reindex status where MarkLogic 11.3 or later is involved.
- Backup identifiers, verification result, restore owner, and recovery decision point.
- Maintenance window, cluster order, rolling-upgrade applicability, stop/go criteria, and communications.
- Pre-change baseline, post-change evidence, vulnerability-validation method, residual findings, and approvals.
Review the document whenever the MarkLogic major version, operating-system image, cluster topology, backup platform, or security-validation method changes. This prevents a checklist that was safe for one deployment from being mistaken for a universal procedure.
