How to Build a Low-Cost API Backend with PostgreSQL

A low-cost PostgreSQL API starts with the right API shape and connection mode. Learn how to weigh managed database features, security, backups, and operating effort.

The practical low-cost starting point is usually one of two designs: run a small custom API service against managed PostgreSQL when you need business rules or integrations, or use a PostgreSQL-generated REST API for a CRUD-heavy application. Neither is cheapest for every workload. Compare the full cost of database and API hosting, networking, backups, availability, and the time you will spend operating and recovering the service.

Choose the API shape that fits the application

Custom API service with PostgreSQL

Use a small, stateless API service connected to PostgreSQL when requests need custom validation, business rules, integrations, or multi-step workflows. This gives you control over HTTP behavior and keeps application decisions in code, while leaving you responsible for maintaining that service and designing its database access.

Generated REST API for CRUD workloads

For an application built mostly around creating, reading, updating, and deleting records, PostgREST can expose a RESTful API from PostgreSQL, using database structure and permissions to determine available operations. Supabase also offers a managed Data REST API based on PostgREST, which can be used directly from a browser or alongside a separate API service: Supabase Data API documentation.

Generated endpoints reduce handwritten CRUD code, not security work. You still need deliberate database roles, schema boundaries, and authorization policies. In Supabase, tables exposed through the Data API require Row Level Security (RLS) and policies that allow the intended access; with RLS enabled and no policies, requests are denied. Keep privileged secrets out of browser code and test both permitted and denied access paths. The appropriate roles and policies depend on the application’s user and tenant model.

Choose a managed database for the workload

A managed PostgreSQL service is a sensible default for a small team that wants to reduce database administration. Compare the exact plan and workload rather than assuming that a provider or architecture is universally less expensive.

  • Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server: Microsoft documents a burstable compute tier for development and low-concurrency workloads, automated backups, patching, monitoring and alerting, configurable maintenance windows, and controls to stop and start a server. Azure says the default backup retention is seven days and can be configured up to 35 days. Compute billing stops while the server is stopped, so this is useful for workloads that can be offline, not for an always-on service during that period. Microsoft positions General Purpose and Memory Optimized tiers for higher concurrency, scale, and more predictable performance. See the Azure Flexible Server overview.
  • Render managed PostgreSQL: Render documents backup and recovery, read replicas, high availability, connection pooling, and performance troubleshooting. The presence of these features is not a price comparison; check the plan’s current limits and inclusions for your workload. See Render PostgreSQL documentation.

These are examples of documented service features, not a like-for-like cost ranking. Availability, plan limits, supported regions, and pricing can change, so verify current details for the region and workload you intend to run.

Match database connections to where the code runs

As Supabase’s connection guide puts it, “How you connect to your database depends on where your code runs.” Its recommendations are platform-specific, but the distinction is useful: persistent application servers and short-lived functions have different connection patterns. See Supabase: Connect to your database.

Runtime or task Connection approach Important trade-off
Persistent backend service Generally use a direct database connection; Supabase documents session pooling as an alternative for IPv4-only persistent backends. Check the platform’s network and connection limits.
Serverless or edge functions with many short-lived connections Use transaction-mode pooling where the provider recommends it. Supabase documents that transaction pooling does not support prepared statements and does not preserve session state between transactions.
Migrations, dump/restore, or replication Use a direct connection, following the provider’s guidance. These PostgreSQL-native operations may require connection behavior that a pooled application connection does not provide.

Serverless connection setup

For Supabase’s serverless guidance, create the client once at module scope, keep its local pool small (one is the documented starting recommendation), disable prepared statements when using transaction mode, and require SSL. A warm function instance can create its own pool, and the number of warm instances is not under your control. Treat these as Supabase-specific instructions, not settings to copy blindly to another provider or driver.

Transaction pooling returns a connection to the pool at transaction boundaries. If your code depends on session-level state, temporary tables, session advisory locks, or listeners, choose an appropriate connection mode or keep the operation within a transaction. Verify driver and provider compatibility before relying on prepared statements.

Set the security boundary before exposing data

Whether requests pass through custom API code or reach a generated API, define which database role can perform each operation and which records each user may access. For a browser-facing Supabase Data API, enable RLS on exposed tables and write policies for intended access; no policies means requests are denied. Do not put privileged database credentials in client-side code. Test access as both an authorized and an unauthorized user.

Require encrypted database connections. Supabase advises requiring SSL so a client refuses an unencrypted connection rather than falling back to plaintext. Azure documents enforcement of TLS 1.2 or later for Flexible Server and private networking options that can deny public access when virtual network integration is used. These are provider-specific capabilities; confirm the equivalent settings on your chosen service.

Compare total cost and recovery, not just compute

A low database compute charge alone does not establish the lowest workable backend cost. Account for database storage and compute, API runtime, network or egress charges, backups and retention, pooling, availability requirements, headroom for traffic, and the time required to patch, monitor, troubleshoot, and restore the service.

  • Check what backup retention and restore options the chosen plan actually includes, and rehearse a restore before relying on it.
  • Confirm connection limits and whether pooling is included or requires separate configuration.
  • Include the API service and networking in the estimate, not only the database line item.
  • Choose availability and performance provisions to match the service’s uptime and concurrency needs; extra capacity may cost more than a development workload requires.
  • Count operator time and recovery effort as real costs, especially when comparing a managed service with self-operation.

Azure’s documented seven-day default backup retention, configurable up to 35 days, applies to Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server, not to PostgreSQL generally. Render lists backup and recovery features, but the specific provisions depend on the applicable service plan. Confirm the current plan details and restore procedure before launch.

A practical build sequence

  1. Write down the workload: identify whether the API is mostly CRUD or needs custom rules and integrations; estimate whether its runtime is persistent or short-lived; define concurrency, uptime, region, and recovery needs.
  2. Select the API boundary: choose a custom stateless service for application-specific behavior, or evaluate PostgREST or a managed generated API for CRUD-heavy access. Decide which schemas and database roles the API may expose.
  3. Select managed PostgreSQL capacity: compare plans against expected concurrency, backup retention, availability, network requirements, and budget. Use burstable or stoppable options only when their performance and offline periods suit the workload.
  4. Configure connections for the runtime: use the provider’s direct or pooled connection guidance. For serverless transaction pooling, verify prepared-statement and session-state compatibility, and set a deliberately small per-instance pool.
  5. Implement and test authorization: enable the required protections, write policies or API checks for the actual user model, and test both allowed and denied requests. Require encrypted connections and keep privileged secrets server-side.
  6. Validate operations before launch: confirm connection limits, backup retention, restore steps, monitoring, and maintenance behavior. Run a restore exercise and revise the capacity and cost estimate using the observed workload.

What makes the backend genuinely low-cost?

The best fit is the simplest architecture that meets the application’s behavior, security, uptime, and recovery requirements without buying idle capacity or creating avoidable operational work. A generated API can save CRUD implementation effort; a custom service can be worth its additional runtime when business logic demands it. Managed database features can reduce maintenance, but their value and price depend on the plan and workload. There is no defensible provider-wide cheapest choice without specifying region, traffic, availability, and backup needs.
