The right home LLM server starts with a memory calculation, not a “gaming” or “AI-ready” label. Model weights, runtime buffers and the KV cache for your prompt and conversation all compete for accelerator memory. Choose the model size, quantization, maximum context, concurrent requests, operating system and budget first; then select the GPU and build around it.
For orientation, NVIDIA’s local-AI guidance uses 6–8 GB GPUs for a 4B model, 12–16 GB for 9B/12B examples and 24 GB or more for a 27B example. Those are planning examples rather than guarantees: the exact model file, context length, inference engine and concurrency determine whether a workload fits comfortably.

1. Define the workload before buying parts
Write down the workload in concrete terms. “Run an LLM locally” can mean an occasional chat session, a coding assistant, document retrieval, an agent with tool calls or an API serving several people. Each use case changes the memory and throughput requirement.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallRecord these five decisions
- Model family and parameter count: identify the model and an approximate size such as 4B, 9B/12B or 27B parameters.
- Quantization format: note whether you will use a full-precision, half-precision or quantized file. Quantization lowers memory use, but aggressive quantization can reduce response quality.
- Maximum context: include the prompt, conversation history, tool output and retrieved documents. A longer context increases the KV-cache allocation and therefore consumes more GPU memory.
- Concurrency: decide whether one person will chat at a time or whether an API must handle several simultaneous requests. Batching and multiple sessions need additional memory.
- Serving environment: choose Windows or Linux, a desktop application or a maintained server/API, and the budget and electrical limits of the room.
Do not add parameter counts from different models and assume they behave alike. Before purchasing, check the exact model recipe and the selected engine’s support for its file format. Leave headroom for runtime allocations and KV cache instead of planning to fill every last gigabyte.

2. Size GPU memory, not just GPU compute
GPU VRAM is the first hard limit for local inference. Weights must be resident somewhere, and the runtime needs space for intermediate buffers and the KV cache. System RAM can hold files and support CPU-side work, but it does not automatically remove a GPU-memory limit.
Planning examples
| Approximate model example | NVIDIA planning range | What can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| 4B | 6–8 GB GPU memory | Quantization, context length, runtime overhead and concurrency |
| 9B or 12B | 12–16 GB GPU memory | Quantization, context length, runtime overhead and concurrency |
| 27B | 24 GB or more GPU memory | Exact model recipe, context length, engine and concurrent sessions |
These figures come from NVIDIA’s local RTX guidance and are starting points, not a compatibility chart. A model that loads at a short context may fail when the context window is extended or a second request arrives. Conversely, a well-quantized model may fit where a higher-precision file does not.
Quantization is a trade-off
Quantization stores weights with fewer bits, reducing the footprint and sometimes making a larger model practical on a single card. The trade-off is output quality: more aggressive quantization can affect accuracy, coding reliability and instruction following. Compare the quality of the specific quantized release you intend to use rather than assuming that every file with the same parameter count behaves identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesContext and concurrency need their own allowance
Context is not “free” after the weights load. The prompt, chat history, retrieved passages and tool results are represented in the KV cache, which grows with context length and active sequences. A server configured for multiple simultaneous requests needs room for each sequence. Set a realistic maximum, test a short prompt first and increase context and concurrency while watching memory use.
3. Select a GPU tier that matches the workload
NVIDIA describes GeForce RTX as a single-GPU platform with 6–32 GB of VRAM and RTX PRO cards as a 16–96 GB tier. It also describes DGX Spark with up to 128 GB of unified memory and DGX Station with 748 GB of unified coherent memory. Those capacities describe different architectures and software environments; unified memory and discrete VRAM are not interchangeable performance measures.

A concrete 32 GB example: GeForce RTX 5090
NVIDIA’s 2025 reference specification for the GeForce RTX 5090 lists 32 GB of GDDR7, 21,760 CUDA cores, fifth-generation Tensor Cores and 3,352 AI TOPS. These are product specifications, not an independent LLM-throughput result. Add-in-board versions can differ from the reference card, so verify the exact model’s dimensions, connector arrangement and cooler before ordering.
| Specification | RTX 5090 reference figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 32 GB GDDR7 | NVIDIA 2025 product specification, accessed in 2026 |
| CUDA cores | 21,760 | NVIDIA 2025 product specification, accessed in 2026 |
| AI performance | 3,352 AI TOPS | NVIDIA product specification; not an LLM benchmark |
| Reference PSU guidance | 850 W minimum | Depends on the complete system configuration |
A 32 GB card can make larger quantized models more practical, but capacity alone does not promise a particular context length, speed or answer quality. Check current model recipes and engine support at the time you buy.
4. Decide between one GPU and several
A single GPU is the simpler first build. It avoids lane-allocation questions, card-to-card communication, additional power connectors and the cooling challenge of placing several thick cards close together.
Multiple GPUs make sense when aggregate memory or throughput is worth those complications. Do not assume that two cards automatically create one pool of VRAM. The serving engine must support sharding or model parallelism, and the model must be partitionable. NVIDIA recommends matched GPUs in its multi-GPU examples and warns that performance can be limited by the slower card. Two different cards may also have different driver, memory and physical-clearance characteristics.
NVIDIA’s example multi-GPU tiers
| Planning tier | GPUs | PCIe layout | CPU platform | System RAM | Storage | Power supply | Case direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| “Good” example | Two RTX 5080s | x8/x8 PCIe Gen 5 | Ryzen 9 or Core i9 | 64 GB | 4 TB or larger PCIe Gen 5 NVMe | 1600 W or higher, 80 Plus Gold | Large ATX or open-frame case |
| “Best” example | Two RTX 5090s | x16/x16 PCIe Gen 5 | Threadripper | 128 GB | 4 TB or larger PCIe Gen 5 NVMe | 1800 W or higher, 80 Plus Gold | Large ATX or open-frame case |
These are NVIDIA planning references, not mandatory specifications. A single-card system does not need a Threadripper platform or 128 GB of RAM unless its other workloads justify them.

5. Plan power, connectors, clearance and cooling
Single RTX 5090 considerations
NVIDIA lists an 850 W minimum PSU for its RTX 5090 reference system and notes that a higher rating may be required for the rest of the configuration. Its reference connection options are three PCIe 8-pin cables connected to the included adapter, or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for 450 W or more. Use the exact instructions for the card and power supply you select.
The reference card occupies three expansion slots. NVIDIA gives reference dimensions of 304 × 137 × 61 mm and asks for another 36 mm of space for the power-cable bend. Measure the case, motherboard slot spacing and side-panel clearance; an add-in-board cooler can be larger than the reference design.
Multi-GPU power and cabling
NVIDIA says a single RTX 5090 can draw up to 575 W under load in its multi-GPU guidance. It calls for a CEM 5.1-compliant PSU with a dedicated 12V-2×6 cable for each GPU and cautions against splicing or daisy-chaining cables between cards. Size the PSU for the complete system with margin; the GPU’s maximum figure is not the total system requirement.
Cooling and household constraints
The case must fit every card, the motherboard, the CPU cooler or radiator and the required cable bends while preserving an intake and exhaust path. Large ATX and open-frame designs appear in NVIDIA’s examples. Open frames can simplify clearance and airflow, but they expose components to dust and are less suitable around pets, children or locations where noise and physical security matter. Plan the room’s airflow and noise tolerance before committing to several high-draw cards.
6. Choose the motherboard, CPU, RAM and storage after the GPU
Motherboard and PCIe lanes
For one GPU, select a board with a mechanically suitable slot and enough clearance for the card’s cooler. For two or more GPUs, verify the electrical lane allocation, slot spacing and whether both cards can receive unobstructed airflow. NVIDIA’s examples use x8/x8 PCIe Gen 5 for the “Good” system and x16/x16 PCIe Gen 5 for the “Best” system. Those layouts are examples, not a universal requirement.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
CPU
The CPU must support the selected board, memory and storage and provide enough host-side performance for tokenization, document processing and other services. A multi-GPU workstation CPU may be justified by lane count or additional workloads, but buying a workstation platform solely because an example uses one can waste budget in a single-GPU build.
System RAM
RAM holds the operating system, downloaded model files, caches and CPU-side tasks. It is separate from VRAM. NVIDIA’s two-GPU examples specify 64 GB and 128 GB respectively; treat 128 GB as an expansive multi-GPU reference, not a baseline for every local server. Match capacity and memory type to the CPU and motherboard.
NVMe storage
Storage must hold the model library, containers, operating system and any document indexes. NVIDIA’s multi-GPU examples use a 4 TB-or-larger PCIe Gen 5 NVMe drive. A smaller single-GPU server can size the drive from the number and size of models you expect to keep. Storage capacity cannot substitute for memory needed while a model is running.

Desktop experimentation
For a first model, desktop applications such as LM Studio or Ollama offer a shorter path from a detected GPU to a chat window. NVIDIA also lists the llama.cpp inference server for local serving. Download a model that fits, start with a short prompt and observe memory use before raising the context limit.

For an API endpoint and higher-configurability serving, NVIDIA identifies vLLM and llama.cpp as advanced backends. NVIDIA’s vLLM workflow uses Linux, Docker, the NVIDIA Container Toolkit and a suitable NVIDIA container image. vLLM supports continuous batching and an OpenAI-compatible API. Follow the current model recipe for launch arguments, check whether the model requires access credentials and confirm that the image supports your GPU and model format. NVIDIA’s guide states that vLLM requires Linux.

Ollama driver and GPU checks
Ollama’s live GPU documentation says NVIDIA support requires compute capability 5.0 or newer and driver 550 or newer, with a higher driver requirement for compute-capability 5.0–6.2 hardware. It lists RTX 50-series support and documents selecting a subset of installed NVIDIA GPUs. Requirements can change, so check the current documentation when installing. NVIDIA’s CUDA table lists the GeForce RTX 5090 at compute capability 12.0.
8. Assemble and bring up the server in a controlled order
- Verify the parts list: check the exact GPU dimensions, slot thickness, PSU connectors, motherboard lane map, CPU cooler height and case clearance before opening boxes.
- Assemble the core system: install the CPU, memory, storage, cooler and motherboard, then mount the GPU or GPUs with their supports and dedicated power cables.
- Install the operating system: use the supported OS for the chosen engine. A desktop workflow can use a supported Windows or Linux installation; vLLM requires Linux.
- Install the current GPU driver: use a driver version supported by the selected engine. Recheck the engine’s requirements rather than relying on an old setup guide.
- Confirm hardware detection: verify that every installed GPU appears correctly, that the expected memory is visible and that no card is sharing an unintended slot or power lead.
- Install the inference engine: choose the desktop application, llama.cpp server, Ollama or Linux container stack that matches the OS and model format.
- Download one appropriately sized model: begin with the model and quantization chosen in your memory worksheet rather than testing a file that is already too large.
- Run a short prompt: confirm that the model loads, generates text and leaves memory headroom.
- Increase demand gradually: raise context length, add retrieved documents and test additional concurrent requests one change at a time while observing memory, temperature and power.
- Document the working configuration: record the driver, engine version, model file, quantization, context limit and concurrency that were validated on your machine.
9. Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The model will not load
- Check the model’s quantization and estimated memory against the GPU’s usable VRAM, not its advertised compute rating.
- Reduce the context limit or concurrency and retry; the KV cache may be the item that exceeds available memory.
- Close other GPU applications and verify that the engine is using the intended card.
- If using multiple GPUs, confirm that the engine supports model parallelism and that the model recipe specifies the required sharding settings.
It loads but fails during a long conversation
The initial weights may fit while the growing KV cache does not. Lower the maximum context, trim retrieved documents or reduce simultaneous sequences. Keep a margin instead of operating at the memory ceiling.
Performance is unstable on a multi-GPU build
Confirm that the cards are matched, each has its own compliant power cable and neither is thermally starved by an adjacent cooler. Verify the PCIe lane layout and the engine’s parallelism configuration. NVIDIA warns that the slower GPU can limit local inference performance.
Recommended Free Tools
The system shuts down or the connector becomes hot
Stop the workload and inspect the PSU rating, connector seating and cable routing. For RTX 5090 multi-GPU systems, follow the dedicated 12V-2×6-per-GPU guidance and do not splice or daisy-chain cables. A higher PSU rating may be necessary when CPU, storage and additional cards are included.
10. Compare complete builds, not isolated GPU labels
When comparing a single-card server with a multi-card system, evaluate the whole platform:
- Usable memory: which model, quantization, context and concurrency combinations fit with headroom?
- Throughput: seek benchmarks for the exact model, quantization, engine and context. The specifications above do not provide a comparative home-server benchmark.
- Parallelism: can the selected software shard the model across the proposed cards?
- Power and thermals: include total system draw, PSU standard, connectors, airflow, noise and the electrical limits of the installation.
- Physical layout: verify PCIe lanes, slot spacing, card dimensions, cable clearance and case support.
- RAM and storage: allow room for the operating system, model cache, document data and future models.
- Cost and serviceability: include the complete landed cost, warranty, regional availability and upgrade path. Current street prices and availability change and were not established here.
- Maintenance: decide whether the simplicity of a desktop app outweighs the flexibility of a Linux containerized API service.
No single GPU, wattage or platform is correct for every household. A careful memory worksheet and a validated software path are more reliable than buying the largest card that fits the budget.
