To make the offer useful, state exactly what the reader will receive, request only the information your signup flow needs, and explain what happens after submission. The dialog also needs to work as a true modal for keyboard and assistive-technology users—not just look like a pop-up.
What should a free eBook signup modal promise?
Make the offer concrete before asking for an email address. Name the eBook or its subject and briefly describe what the subscriber gets. For example, “Get the beginner’s guide to home Wi-Fi” is clearer than “Sign up for updates.” Do not promise a particular file format, delivery time, or series of follow-up emails unless your actual signup and delivery flow provides it.

A digital download can be paired with email signup: the Kit WordPress plugin listing describes forms that can send free content such as a PDF newsletter. That is a documented capability of the plugin, not evidence that this page is a particular product template or that using a modal raises subscription rates.
What information should the form ask for?
Ask for the information the implementation needs to subscribe the reader and deliver the offer. An email address may be sufficient; add a name or custom field only when it serves a real purpose in your workflow. The Kit listing documents forms with name, email, and custom fields, but that capability is not a recommendation to require every field.
#1 Best Overall
Use a button label that makes the action clear, such as “Send me the eBook,” and ensure the form’s success state tells the person what to expect next. If delivery happens through a confirmation email or another step, say so accurately. Do not imply instant access if the flow does not provide it.
How should the modal behave for keyboard users?
A modal is an interaction boundary: while it is open, keyboard focus stays within the dialog rather than moving through the page behind it. The W3C’s ARIA Authoring Practices Guide dialog pattern describes expected behavior, including moving focus into the dialog when it opens, cycling Tab and Shift+Tab among its tabbable elements, and closing it with Escape. On close, focus should return to the element that opened it, unless the flow gives a reason to place focus elsewhere.
Rank #2
- Give the dialog an accessible name, usually by associating it with its visible heading.
- Include a visible close button or cancel control, and make it operable by keyboard.
- Keep the controls needed to complete or dismiss the modal inside the dialog.
- When the modal closes, return focus to its opener if that element is still present.
Do not set aria-modal="true" on a custom dialog unless the page behind it is genuinely unavailable to all users while the dialog is open. The accessibility semantics must match the behavior.

Should you use the HTML dialog element?
The native HTML <dialog> element is one implementation option, not a required approach or an automatic guarantee of accessibility. The W3C’s H102 technique describes browser-managed focus, inert background content, and Escape-key closing when using it. Test the behavior in your actual design and supported browsers; the technique is an example, not a universal compliance guarantee.
How do you choose an implementation?
Choose between an inline signup form and a modal based on the experience your page needs, not an assumed conversion advantage. The available evidence does not establish that one presentation converts better.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Presentation: An inline form stays within the page flow; a modal interrupts that flow and requires a clear way to dismiss it.
- Accessibility: Check focus entry, keyboard containment, Escape behavior, the visible close control, and focus restoration.
- Delivery and email workflow: Confirm that the chosen tool can collect subscriptions and deliver the promised download through your existing process.
- Integration and styling: For a WordPress site, check the tool’s embed and modal options alongside the styling you need. Kit’s WordPress.org listing documents form embeds, modal triggers, subscription forms, and free-content delivery; check its current vendor materials for feature and pricing details.
What should you test before publishing?
- Open the modal using its trigger and confirm that focus moves into the dialog.
- Use Tab and Shift+Tab to verify that focus stays among the dialog’s controls while it is open.
- Press Escape and use the visible close control; confirm that both close the dialog.
- After closing, check that focus returns to the opener when it is still available.
- Submit the form and verify that the success message and download delivery match the promise shown in the modal.
