How to Build a Diversified Portfolio Without Betting on One AI Stock

To reduce dependence on one AI company, look beyond the names of your stocks and funds: check what they actually hold, diversify across companies and sectors, and choose a mix of stocks, bonds, and cash that fits your goals, time horizon, and ability to handle losses. There is no single allocation that suits every investor, and diversification cannot prevent losses when the broader market falls.

Start with your goal, time horizon, and risk capacity

Asset allocation is how you divide investments among categories such as stocks, bonds, and cash. The appropriate mix depends on when you expect to need the money and how much loss you are willing and able to withstand. Money needed soon has less time to recover from a market decline than money invested for a distant goal. Risk tolerance includes both your willingness to accept losses and your financial capacity to do so.

There is no universally suitable stock-and-bond percentage. Set the allocation around your own goal and circumstances before deciding whether to add a particular company, sector, or fund. The SEC’s Asset Allocation and Diversification and Investment Products guides explain these factors.

Diversify both across and within asset classes

Holding different kinds of assets can spread exposure across parts of a portfolio that may respond differently to events. Within stocks, broad exposure to companies in different sectors can reduce reliance on one company or industry. A collection of many securities is not necessarily diversified if most depend on the same sector or a small cluster of companies.

Funds can make it easier to own a range of investments, but a fund’s label alone does not establish how broad its exposure is. A fund focused on technology or AI may deliberately concentrate on that area. Investor.gov notes that mutual funds and ETFs do not automatically provide diversification; its ETF guide also cautions that some ETFs are less diversified or track a single stock.

Look through holdings to find AI and fund overlap

To assess whether your portfolio depends heavily on AI-related companies, examine the current holdings of each individual stock, mutual fund, and ETF rather than inferring exposure from a product name. Note each fund’s largest positions, then compare holdings across your funds. If several funds own many of the same large companies, counting their tickers as separate sources of diversification can exaggerate how spread out your portfolio is.

  1. List your investments. Include individual stocks as well as every mutual fund and ETF in the account or portfolio you are reviewing.
  2. Check each fund’s latest holdings. Record the largest positions and look for a narrow sector or single-stock focus. Fund objectives and holdings are more useful than a broad-sounding name alone.
  3. Compare funds with one another. Look for repeated companies among their largest positions. Overlap means multiple funds can leave you exposed to the same company or group of companies.
  4. Consider the whole allocation. Review how much of your portfolio is in stocks, bonds, and cash, as well as whether stock exposure is concentrated in one sector.

Holdings change, so a check reflects the information available at that time, not a permanent guarantee about exposure. The SEC’s general guidance supports reviewing holdings and concentration, but it does not provide a current measure of AI exposure or establish that any particular company or fund is suitable for you.

Rebalance according to a plan, not a headline

When some holdings rise or fall faster than others, your allocation can drift from the mix you chose. Rebalancing brings it back toward that plan. You can sell portions of categories that have become overweight, buy categories that are underweight, or direct new contributions toward underweights. Some investors use periodic reviews; others act when an allocation crosses a preset drift threshold. The SEC describes rebalancing as tending to work best relatively infrequently, rather than as a reaction to every market move.

Before trading, consider the account, any transaction costs, and possible tax consequences. Rebalancing methods and costs vary; there is no single schedule that is right for every portfolio. See the SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.

Know what diversification can—and cannot—do

Diversification can reduce the effect that a poor result in one holding has on a portfolio. It does not eliminate market risk or promise a positive return. As Investor.gov puts it, “Diversification can’t guarantee that your investments won’t suffer if the market drops.” Its familiar advice is: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” Diversification is a way to manage concentration, not a guarantee against broad losses.
