Those figures describe recent index levels, not what the market will do next. If you are deciding how to invest, build around your goal, timeline and ability to tolerate losses—not a guess about whether a drop is imminent.

How do I diversify my portfolio when the Nasdaq is at a record high?
Start with your financial plan, then audit what you already own. A record high is not, by itself, a reason to sell, buy, or change your target allocation. The right mix depends on the purpose of the money, when you need it, and how much loss you can financially and emotionally withstand.
Set the goal and time horizon
Write down what the money is for and when you expect to use it. Money earmarked for a near-term expense may call for less volatile investments than money intended for a goal decades away. Investor.gov explains that an allocation suited to an investor changes with their time horizon and risk tolerance in its Asset Allocation and Diversification guide.

Consider both capacity and willingness to take risk
Risk tolerance is not just how comfortable you feel watching prices fall. Consider whether a loss would force you to sell to cover expenses, delay the goal, or take on debt. A portfolio you cannot stick with through a decline may not be a workable plan, even if its long-term return potential seems attractive.
How can I find hidden overlap and concentration?
Several funds do not necessarily equal broad diversification. They may own many of the same companies or depend on the same sectors and market forces. Investor.gov cautions that a mutual fund or ETF may fail to provide diversification if it is narrowly focused, and advises investors to examine fund holdings.
- List every holding. Gather investments across accounts, including individual stocks, mutual funds and ETFs. Note each holding’s value and the account where it sits.
- Check each fund’s benchmark and largest holdings. Use the fund provider’s current holdings and prospectus to see what the fund owns and how it selects and weights investments.
- Compare holdings across funds. Look for repeated companies, sectors or other shared exposures. A broad fund and a technology-focused fund, for example, may both own some of the same large technology companies.
- Assess concentration across the whole portfolio. Consider how much depends on a single company, sector, asset class or other common risk driver. Count funds only after checking what is inside them.
Index funds also differ in how they weight holdings. Nasdaq describes the Nasdaq Composite as weighted by total listed market capitalization, without float adjustment or concentration caps. As a result, a fund tracking it can hold many securities while assigning more weight to larger companies. Nasdaq’s June 11, 2026 explanation also distinguishes the Composite from the Nasdaq-100, which has different eligibility rules and construction.

How should I diversify across investments?
Think about diversification at two levels: across asset classes and within each one. Stocks, bonds and cash have different roles and risks; the mix should reflect your goal, time horizon, liquidity needs and tolerance for loss. Within an asset class, check that your holdings are not concentrated in only a few companies, industries or other exposures.
Diversification spreads exposure; it does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses. A diversified portfolio can still fall in a broad market decline. There is no single stock-and-bond percentage that is right for everyone, and simply adding a narrowly focused fund may add concentration rather than reduce it.
When and how should I rebalance?
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward the allocation chosen for your plan after market movements cause it to drift. Investor.gov describes two possible approaches: review on a calendar schedule or rebalance when an asset class moves beyond a preset allocation threshold. It says rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently.

Choose a rule before markets move
- Calendar-based: Review at a regular interval you select, such as annually. A scheduled review is a prompt to check the allocation, not an automatic instruction to trade.
- Threshold-based: Set in advance how far an allocation may drift from its target before you act. The threshold is a personal rule, not a market forecast.
Use contributions or trades to correct drift
If an asset class is below its target, directing new contributions toward it may help restore balance without selling other holdings. You can also sell some of an overweight holding and add to an underweight one. The appropriate method depends on your account, tax situation and applicable rules; check those details before trading.

A record close does not tell you when the next decline will happen. Trying to wait for a better entry point requires two decisions: when to get out or hold back, and when to invest. The SEC’s World Investor Week 2026 bulletin, issued with CFTC, FINRA, NASAA, NFA and SIPC, warns that trying to time the market can lead to buying at highs and selling as markets fall, reducing returns.
If you have a long-term goal and a plan for investing, periodic investing can spread purchases over time and mitigate the impact of volatility and short-term swings, according to that bulletin. It does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses. Keep the strategy consistent with your goal and risk tolerance rather than changing it in response to a headline.

What the latest Nasdaq record does—and does not—tell you
Nasdaq Global Indexes recorded a Nasdaq Composite close of 27,477.31 on October 5, 2026, followed by 27,711.25 on October 6, 2026. These are dated index levels, not forecasts or measures of what any individual investor should own. Index values change, and the meaning of “Nasdaq” depends on whether the source means the Composite, Nasdaq-100 or another index.
This is general educational information, not an individualized allocation recommendation. A suitable plan also depends on factors such as your jurisdiction, taxes, account type, liquidity needs and capacity for loss.
