Stocks from different sectors are not, by themselves, a diversified portfolio. A portfolio can hold technology, health care, and consumer stocks yet still be heavily exposed to stocks overall, a few large companies, or overlapping funds. Start with your financial goal and risk capacity, set an overall mix of asset categories, then check how the holdings within that mix are distributed.
Start with the goal, timeline, and risk you can bear
Before reacting to a stock in the headlines, identify what the money is for and when you may need it. Investor.gov explains that asset allocation depends on an investor’s goal, time horizon, and risk tolerance; a goal that is near may call for a different level of risk than one many years away. Consider both your willingness to see investments fall and your ability to absorb a loss without derailing the goal. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guide and the SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing explain these factors.

There is no single stock-and-bond percentage or sector target that suits everyone. The relevant question is not which sector is currently attracting attention, but what overall mix fits your circumstances and what a decline would mean for your plan.

Asset allocation is the division of a portfolio among broad categories such as stocks, bonds, and cash. It is a different decision from spreading the stock portion across companies and sectors. A portfolio holding many stock sectors may still lack balance across asset categories if nearly all its value is in stocks.

Set an intended mix based on your goal, timeline, and tolerance for losses. Then diversify within each category. For the stock allocation, that may mean exposure across multiple companies and industry sectors; Investor.gov notes that diversification can include different stocks or bonds and sectors such as consumer goods, health care, and technology. Different sector labels are a useful check, not proof that the total portfolio is appropriately diversified.
Compare individual stocks and funds by what they actually hold
Individual stocks make the underlying company clear, but building and maintaining breadth across companies and sectors takes monitoring. Funds can hold many investments, but a fund’s name or label does not guarantee broad exposure: a mutual fund or ETF may be narrowly focused. Multiple funds can also own many of the same top positions, creating more concentration than the fund count suggests.

| What to compare | Individual stocks | Mutual funds and ETFs |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying holdings | Each position is a specific company; breadth depends on the stocks you select. | Review the actual holdings and stated sector focus; a fund can be concentrated or narrowly focused. |
| Company and sector concentration | Check the size of each position and the sectors represented across all stocks. | Check the fund’s largest positions and sector weights, not only its name or category. |
| Overlap with existing holdings | Compare each company with holdings already owned directly or through funds. | Compare top positions across funds and against directly held stocks; funds may overlap. |
| Monitoring and rebalancing effort | You are responsible for tracking company positions and keeping the intended mix. | Holdings still need review, especially for focus and overlap; fund ownership does not remove the need to monitor allocation. |
| Fit with your plan | Assess each holding against the portfolio’s goal and the risk you can bear. | Assess the fund’s underlying exposure against the same goal and risk tolerance. |
These are comparison criteria, not a ranking. Neither owning individual stocks nor choosing funds automatically solves concentration; the combined portfolio is what matters.

Review the whole portfolio and rebalance when it drifts
- List all holdings. Include direct stocks and the funds in each account so the same companies are not overlooked when held in more than one way.
- Inspect fund holdings. Review each fund’s underlying positions and sector focus. Compare its largest positions with those in your other funds and direct stock holdings.
- Check the asset mix. Compare the portfolio’s current shares of stocks, bonds, cash, and other categories you use with your intended allocation.
- Rebalance if needed. When some holdings grow faster than others and the mix moves away from the target, rebalancing can bring it closer again. The SEC and Investor.gov discuss rebalancing as part of maintaining an allocation.
- Keep the target tied to the plan. A recent run-up in one category is not, by itself, a reason to change a long-term allocation. Revisit the target when your goal, timeline, or ability to bear losses changes.
What diversification can—and cannot—do
Diversification is a way to manage concentration risk, not a promise of gains or protection from every market decline. Investor.gov puts the limit plainly: “Diversification can’t guarantee that your investments won’t suffer if the market drops.” It may improve the chance that losses are smaller than they otherwise would be, but it cannot eliminate market risk. See Investor.gov’s explanation of diversification.
