How to Build a Diversified Portfolio When AI Stocks Dominate Market Gains

Start by checking what you already own. A broad U.S. index fund can hold a large share of the technology companies associated with AI, and adding a growth fund may increase exposure to many of the same stocks rather than diversify it. From there, assess whether your portfolio also fits your goals, time horizon, risk capacity, and need for cash. Diversifying can reduce reliance on a narrow set of companies or return drivers, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses.

How do I diversify my portfolio when AI stocks are driving the market?

Use a three-part process: look through your funds to find overlapping holdings, separate your view of AI’s economic potential from your expectations for the stocks that may benefit, and compare your actual mix across equity styles, regions, and fixed income. The point is not to make a portfolio “AI-proof” or to guess when market leadership will change. It is to understand which outcomes your investments depend on and whether those dependencies suit your plan.

Market-cap-weighted funds assign larger weights to companies with larger market values. As a result, a fund may own hundreds or thousands of securities and still depend heavily on a relatively small group of companies. Adding another fund is not necessarily diversification if it owns many of the same largest stocks.

Vanguard Advisors’ 2026 Portfolio Perspectives material reports that technology made up nearly 40% of the S&P 500, and that the sector’s index weight had grown by roughly 14 percentage points since the launch of the first generative AI model in November 2022. The nearly 40% figure is a reported technology-sector share, not a measure of the portion attributable only to AI; the material does not establish an exact as-of date for the statistic. This helps explain why broad U.S. equity exposure may already carry substantial exposure to AI-related expectations.

Am I already invested in AI through an S&P 500 index fund?

Possibly, but the answer depends on the fund’s current holdings and how its index is weighted. An S&P 500 fund generally provides exposure to large U.S. companies, not an even slice of each company in the index. The specific holdings and weights can change as market values and index membership change. Do not infer your personal exposure from the fund’s name alone.

Audit the holdings beneath each fund

  1. Gather your current positions. List funds and individual securities across the accounts you want to assess. Include workplace retirement plans and other investment accounts if they are part of the same long-term plan.
  2. Open each fund’s holdings information. Look for its current top holdings, index or investment mandate, sector breakdown, geographic exposure, and market-cap weighting approach. A fund’s fact sheet or holdings page is a practical starting point; check its date because holdings can move.
  3. Compare the largest names across funds. Mark companies that recur in a broad U.S. index fund and a growth, technology, or other U.S. equity fund. Multiple fund names do not mean multiple independent sources of return if their largest holdings overlap.
  4. Look beyond the top names. Compare the sector and regional breakdowns, the fund’s investment style, and whether its exposure is concentrated in large companies. Distinguish technology-sector exposure from a narrower AI theme: the former is not a precise measure of the latter.
  5. Review the whole portfolio, not just one account. Combine your investments at a high level and consider how cash needs, bonds, and other assets affect your ability to tolerate losses. If you cannot get a reliable look-through for a holding, record that uncertainty rather than treating it as diversified by default.

The available 2026 material does not establish a single verified current combined weight for the seven largest U.S. companies. It is therefore better to inspect your actual funds than to rely on a headline percentage for a group of stocks.

Why can AI be transformative while AI stocks still underperform?

The economic case for a technology and the investment case for a particular stock are related, but they are not the same. A company can help build widely adopted technology and still deliver disappointing returns if investors have already paid a price that assumes exceptional growth. Conversely, firms that use a technology productively may benefit without being the companies that build its infrastructure.

Investors’ returns depend in part on how a company’s eventual earnings compare with what its share price already implies. Strong adoption or impressive revenue growth may not be enough to meet unusually high expectations. A portfolio decision should therefore consider valuations and the range of possible outcomes, not just whether AI matters to the economy.

In a July 29, 2026 Vanguard transcript, Roger Aliaga-Díaz, the firm’s global head of portfolio construction, said that AI leaders’ valuations may surpass even optimistic earnings forecasts. That is a warning about the relationship between price and expectations, not a claim that AI will fail or that a downturn is imminent. Vanguard Advisors’ 2026 Portfolio Perspectives material also described U.S. large-cap stocks as near the 95th percentile of their historical relative valuation range. Treat this as a source-reported valuation measure, not a timing signal.

Aliaga-Díaz also said in the July 29 transcript: “Longer term, and assuming that it succeeds in transforming the economy, we expect AI to provide the greatest benefit to companies using the technology, not its builders.” The conditional matters: this is a long-term view about where benefits may accrue, not a promise of short-term performance for any category of stock.

In a July 14, 2026 Vanguard commentary, Qian Wang, Vanguard’s global head of capital market research, expressed a similar idea: “Productivity gains from a transformative technology tend to flow to end users, not just the technology’s builders.” The statement describes a possible pattern in how productivity benefits spread; it does not identify specific future winners or establish when gains will appear.

Which diversification dimensions should I compare?

Consider the role each exposure would play in your plan, not simply whether it is different from your largest holding. Vanguard’s 2026 outlook discusses U.S. value-oriented equities, developed markets outside the U.S., and high-quality fixed income alongside U.S. equities. These are categories to assess, not an assured winning mix. Each has distinct sources of risk.

Exposure What it can add Risks and questions to assess
Broad U.S. equities Exposure to a wide range of U.S. companies, though market-cap weighting can make the largest firms a substantial part of the fund. Check concentration in large companies, sector mix, overlap with other funds, and the valuation assumptions embedded in prices.
U.S. value-oriented equities A different equity style from growth-oriented exposure. Vanguard’s 2026 outlook identified U.S. value-oriented equities among the areas with stronger forecast risk-return profiles over five to ten years. Value stocks can lag other styles, and a value label does not guarantee low risk or better returns. Review the fund’s actual holdings, sector mix, and costs.
Developed non-U.S. equities Exposure to companies and economies outside the U.S. Vanguard’s 2026 outlook included developed non-U.S. equities among its stronger forecast risk-return profiles over five to ten years. Country, company, and currency risks differ from those in U.S. holdings. Exchange-rate movements can affect returns measured in your home currency, and international stocks can also fall sharply.
High-quality fixed income A source of income and a potential counterweight to equity risk, depending on bond quality, maturity, and market conditions. Vanguard ranked high-quality U.S. fixed income first among the three strongest forecast risk-return profiles it listed for the five-to-ten-year horizon. Bonds can lose value when interest rates rise; credit quality, maturity, and inflation sensitivity matter. A bond allocation is not risk-free, and its role depends on your needs and existing holdings.

Vanguard’s July 29, 2026 transcript also included Aliaga-Díaz’s view that “the portfolio diversification benefit of bonds is perhaps the strongest it’s been in years.” This is a dated provider perspective, not a guarantee that bonds will offset stock losses in every market environment.

What do Vanguard’s 2026 forecasts say—and what do they not say?

Vanguard’s 2026 outlook estimated average annual U.S. stock returns of 4%–5% over the next five to ten years. The outlook characterized this model-based forecast as being nearly singlehandedly driven by its risk-return assessment of large-cap technology. It is a hypothetical projection, not an observed return, a promise, or an individualized estimate for a reader’s portfolio.

The same outlook estimated a 25%–30% chance of a scenario in which AI disappoints and fails to generate higher economic growth. This is a scenario probability from Vanguard’s model, not an observed frequency or a certainty. The outlook ranked the strongest forecast risk-return profiles, in order, as high-quality U.S. fixed income, U.S. value-oriented equities, and non-U.S. developed-markets equities over a five-to-ten-year horizon. Those rankings reflect Vanguard’s outlook at the time; they do not establish the right allocation for every investor or predict which category will lead in a particular year.

Long-horizon projections depend on assumptions and can change as prices, economic conditions, and expectations change. Vanguard describes its outlook figures as hypothetical model outputs, not actual results or guarantees. Use them as one provider’s perspective on uncertainty, not as a substitute for your own objectives, a diversified plan, or an assessment of what losses you can bear.

Should I add international stocks or bonds if I own a lot of tech stocks?

They may be options to evaluate, but ownership of tech stocks alone does not determine what you should buy. First identify whether your current portfolio already has international equities or fixed income, including through broad funds or retirement plans. Then consider what you need the proposed holding to do: reduce dependence on U.S. mega-cap growth, provide liquidity or income, diversify regions, or help manage volatility. A holding that serves no clear role can add complexity without improving the fit of the plan.

International equities change the geographic and currency mix, but they remain equities and can lose value. Bonds may behave differently from stocks, but their performance depends on interest rates, credit conditions, maturity, and inflation. Neither category is a guaranteed hedge against technology-related losses. Your decision should account for the size of your existing positions and how the combined portfolio would behave under several plausible outcomes, including a period when both stocks and bonds decline.

How should I choose and maintain diversified funds?

Compare funds by what they own and how they work, not only by their category label or recent return. Before changing an allocation, understand whether the proposed fund adds a genuinely different exposure, duplicates existing holdings, or introduces risks that are not useful for your plan.

Compare the fund and the portfolio together

  • Concentration: Examine the largest holdings and their share of the fund, along with any narrow industry or theme focus.
  • Valuation assumptions: Consider what earnings growth and future results appear to be expected, while recognizing that valuation measures do not predict an exact turning point.
  • Geography and currency: Check where companies are based and what currencies can affect your returns.
  • Style and sectors: Compare growth and value characteristics and the mix of industries. A different label is not sufficient evidence that exposures differ.
  • Fixed-income characteristics: For bond funds, review credit quality, maturity or duration, and sensitivity to inflation and interest-rate changes.
  • Costs and overlap: Compare fund costs and holdings against what you already own. Costs reduce returns over time, while duplication can make a portfolio more concentrated than it appears.
  • Fit and access: Consider your investment horizon, capacity for loss, liquidity needs, account type, tax situation, and the rules in your jurisdiction before making a change.

Use rebalancing to follow a plan, not predict markets

Rebalancing means adjusting a portfolio when its mix has drifted from the allocation you chose. It can help restore the intended balance among exposures; it is not a reliable way to forecast which asset class will outperform next. The cited outlooks do not establish a universal rebalancing threshold, schedule, or tax treatment. Those details depend on your plan, account, and jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply before selling or exchanging holdings.

How do I turn the audit into a decision?

  1. Write down the goal for the money. Separate long-term investing from money you may need soon. A portfolio designed for a distant goal may not suit a near-term spending need.
  2. Set a workable risk range. Consider both your willingness to tolerate declines and your financial capacity to absorb them without disrupting essential plans.
  3. Record your current exposures. Note broad U.S. equities, overlapping large-company holdings, equity style, non-U.S. equities, fixed income, and cash. Identify gaps and concentrations without assuming a particular percentage is right for everyone.
  4. Choose a role for any change. State what a new exposure is meant to accomplish and how it differs from what you already own. If the reason is only that a segment has recently performed well, pause and revisit the plan.
  5. Check practical consequences. Review costs, account availability, taxes, trading constraints, and local rules before acting. The effect of a trade can vary by account and jurisdiction.
  6. Set a review approach. Decide how you will check that the portfolio still matches the written plan, rather than reacting to every headline or daily market move.

There is no single U.S. stock, international stock, or bond percentage supported as suitable for every reader by these sources. An appropriate allocation depends on goals, time horizon, liquidity needs, risk tolerance and capacity, existing holdings, account type, tax circumstances, and jurisdiction. For a personalized decision, consider speaking with a qualified fiduciary financial professional who can assess your full circumstances.

What is the practical next step?

Before making a trade, gather the current holdings for your largest funds and mark the names and sectors that recur. Then compare that look-through with your written investment plan: what risks are you intentionally accepting, what risks are accidental, and what would make you change the plan? That exercise is more useful than trying to predict whether AI-linked stocks will lead next quarter. Diversification can reduce dependence on a narrow set of return drivers, but it cannot remove market risk or guarantee a positive result.
