To diversify a crypto portfolio, first decide how much crypto belongs in your overall financial plan, then set target weights and a personal cap for any one holding. Check whether your assets share risks, and rebalance only under a rule you chose in advance. No particular number of coins or allocation makes a crypto portfolio safe: diversification can reduce concentration in one holding, but it cannot prevent losses.
Start with your overall financial plan
Think of crypto as one high-risk part of your broader portfolio, not a replacement for it. The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says people who invest in crypto should do so as part of a diversified portfolio and only with money they can afford to lose. It warns that investors should be prepared to lose all their money. Those are UK consumer-guidance statements, not a universal legal rule, but the underlying risk is relevant wherever you invest. Read the FCA’s crypto guidance.

Before choosing tokens, write down your goal, time horizon, and tolerance for losses. General SEC investor education identifies these as factors in building an investment plan; it does not provide a crypto-specific model allocation. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance can help frame those decisions, but it cannot determine what is suitable for you.
Set targets and a personal single-coin limit
Choose a target allocation for the crypto portion of your portfolio before buying. Then decide the largest share you are willing to let any one coin represent. Treat that maximum as your own risk-management rule—not a regulator-approved threshold or a guarantee against loss. Official investor guidance does not establish an ideal crypto allocation, coin count, or safe maximum holding.

Also consider how much the largest holding represents of your entire crypto allocation. This shows whether a sharp decline in that coin could dominate the crypto portion of your finances. Recheck the weights when prices or your holdings change; market movements can push a portfolio away from its targets even if you make no trades.
Look beyond the number of coins
Owning several tickers is not the same as diversifying risk. The SEC’s general investor guidance explains that investments can overlap even when they appear to be separate holdings. In crypto, multiple assets may still be exposed to broad market moves or share technology, liquidity, custody, and trading-platform risks. The sources cited here do not establish precise correlations between particular tokens, so do not assume that a larger coin count means independent performance.

Review each holding for the risks it adds and the risks it shares with your other positions. Consider the asset itself as well as how you buy, trade, and store it. Diversification may reduce dependence on one coin, but it does not remove market-wide or infrastructure risks.
Choose a rebalancing rule before you need it
Rebalancing means adjusting holdings toward your target weights after market movements cause them to drift. Investor.gov describes two general approaches: checking on a set schedule or acting when an allocation crosses a preset threshold. Its guidance is about investing generally, not evidence of an optimal crypto-rebalancing interval. It says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. See Investor.gov’s explanation of rebalancing.

- Calendar-based: Review your allocation on a schedule you choose and compare it with your targets.
- Threshold-based: Review or rebalance when a holding or allocation moves beyond a drift limit you chose in advance.
Either approach can involve selling assets that have grown above target or adding to those below it. Before trading, account for transaction costs and check how local tax rules may apply; this is not tax advice. A rebalancing rule is a way to maintain chosen weights, not a method for predicting prices or avoiding losses.

A wallet affects how you hold and access crypto; it does not diversify your portfolio. With self-custody, you are responsible for protecting your private keys, and losing a key can permanently remove access to the assets. Internet-connected “hot” wallets face cyber threats. Cold-wallet devices are typically a paid purchase, and they still require secure handling. Custodial services introduce reliance on the provider and its ability to protect assets and maintain access. SEC staff’s custody bulletin explains these distinctions.

In the United States, spot bitcoin and ether exchange-traded products (ETPs) can provide exposure without requiring direct wallet or private-key management. SEC staff describes these products as exchange-traded commodity trusts, not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940; despite common naming, they are not the same legal structure as registered ETFs or mutual funds. They still carry crypto-market and underlying-market risks, may have tracking differences, and charge sponsor fees. An ETP holding bitcoin or ether is exposure to that asset, not a diversified crypto portfolio by itself. Product availability, structure, and tax treatment vary by jurisdiction. Read the SEC staff bulletin on bitcoin and ether ETPs.
Plan for risks diversification cannot remove
- Market loss: Crypto assets are speculative and can lose substantial value; diversification does not guarantee against loss.
- Access and custody: A lost private key, cyberattack, or failure of a custodian or trading platform can disrupt or eliminate access.
- Shared infrastructure: Several holdings may depend on the same platforms or face common market and liquidity pressures.
- Fraud: Investor alerts warn that crypto-related offerings can involve fraud. Do not treat a portfolio’s spread across tokens as protection from a dishonest operator.
SEC investor materials on crypto custody and crypto-asset securities describe risks including cyber threats, platform or custodian failure, and loss of access. They are educational materials, not individualized advice or a guarantee of protection. SEC custody guidance and SEC guidance on caution with crypto-asset securities provide more detail.
