Aircraft-engine careers split into two tracks that overlap in skills but not in entry requirements. Engine maintenance means inspecting, repairing and overhauling engines in regulated aviation environments; in the United States, the FAA Powerplant mechanic rating—and often the combined Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate—is the key credential. Engine manufacturing covers production, machining, assembly, testing, quality and manufacturing engineering; many factory roles hire entry-level candidates with paid training and do not require an FAA mechanic certificate.
Choose the work you want first, then select a route that supplies the required credential or documented hands-on experience. The guide below maps U.S. certification, employer training examples, practical preparation, working conditions and realistic occupational data, while identifying which details change by country, site and hiring cycle.

Start by choosing the kind of engine work you want
“Aircraft engine work” is not one job. Your daily tasks, legal authority, training and progression depend on whether you maintain engines already in service or help build new ones.
Engine maintenance and overhaul
Maintenance technicians troubleshoot faults, remove and install engines, inspect parts, repair or replace components, perform scheduled overhauls and record work in accordance with approved maintenance data. Work is commonly based in airline or independent repair stations, hangars and airfields. In the United States, signing for regulated maintenance is tied to an FAA mechanic certificate and the privileges of its ratings; an employer may also impose additional type, engine or company-authorisation requirements.

Engine manufacturing and production
Manufacturing roles turn designs into certified hardware. Job families include CNC machining, fabrication, fitting, assembly, inspection, nondestructive testing, metrology, tooling, materials and processes, production control, quality assurance, test operations and manufacturing engineering. A factory technician may work to tightly controlled process instructions without holding an FAA A&P, although aviation-quality systems, traceability and safety discipline are essential.
Where the tracks meet
Both tracks reward mechanical aptitude, accurate measurement, blueprint or technical-document reading, disciplined paperwork, safe work habits and the ability to investigate a defect rather than merely replace a part. Experience in one track can help you move to the other, but it does not automatically transfer a license or satisfy every employer’s prerequisites.
The U.S. maintenance route: earn the FAA rating that matches engine work
The FAA Aviation Mechanic certificate has two ratings: Airframe and Powerplant. Powerplant is the rating directly associated with engines. Holding both ratings is commonly called an A&P certificate and can broaden the maintenance jobs for which an employer will consider you. These rules apply to U.S. certification; other countries use their own authorities and licensing systems.

- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
- You must establish the required practical experience, graduate from an FAA-certificated Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS), or qualify through an eligible military training and experience pathway.
The FAA explains the testing sequence and eligibility at Aircraft Mechanic Oral, Practical, & Written Tests. You must pass the applicable knowledge tests, followed by oral and practical examinations. The Aviation Mechanic General, Airframe, and Powerplant Airman Certification Standards show the knowledge and skill areas an examiner can evaluate.
Three ways to become eligible
- Attend an AMTS. The FAA says most approved programs take about 18 to 24 months, depending on the ratings and the school’s structure. Graduation does not itself issue a certificate: you still need to meet the other eligibility conditions and pass the required tests. Verify that the school is currently FAA-certificated and ask exactly which ratings its curriculum supports.
- Document civilian practical experience. For one rating, the FAA specifies at least 18 months of appropriate practical experience. To seek both Airframe and Powerplant ratings, the threshold is 30 months of concurrent experience performing duties appropriate to both. Experience must be actual qualifying work, not simply time spent enrolled in training.
- Use qualifying military experience. Military training or service can be an eligible pathway, but the FAA evaluates the specialty, training and actual duties. Military service by itself does not guarantee eligibility, and training time that does not represent qualifying practical work cannot simply be counted as experience.
Read the FAA’s current explanations of acceptable evidence and pathways in How to Become an Aviation Maintenance or Avionics Technician and Experience Requirements to Become an Aircraft Mechanic.

Build an OJT record that an examiner can understand
If you qualify through on-the-job experience, start documenting from your first shift. FAA guidance states: “You will need to consistently document your OJT activities.” A useful record identifies each maintenance task, the date or period, time spent, aircraft or component context, and the certificated mechanic who observed or validated the work. Keep copies of supporting work orders or training records when your employer permits it, and ask the supervising mechanic to sign or otherwise validate entries promptly.
An FAA-style maintenance logbook is optional recordkeeping help, not a required product or a substitute for accepted evidence. The FAA says you may purchase a logbook, create your own log or use its sample format. Before relying on a record, compare it with the current FAA experience guidance and ask the local Flight Standards District Office or your testing authority whether your evidence is sufficient.
Know the narrower Repairman Certificate
The FAA Repairman Certificate is an employer-recommended credential for specific work and organizations. It can fit a specialized hands-on position, but it is not a general replacement for an A&P across employers. The privileges and limits depend on the certificate and the organization. Review Become an FAA-Certificated Repairman and confirm the exact job scope before choosing this route.
The manufacturing route: enter through production, quality or engineering
Do not assume an FAA A&P is mandatory for a factory job. Start with the posting’s requirements. Entry-level production and assembly roles may accept a high-school credential, technical-school background or relevant hands-on experience and provide paid training. Engineering, materials, design and process roles generally require a relevant diploma or degree, while skilled machining and inspection jobs may value a technical apprenticeship, recognised trade qualification or demonstrated competence.
Skills employers repeatedly look for
- Mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand tools and powered equipment.
- Attention to detail, measurement discipline and a willingness to stop work when a condition is unsafe or out of specification.
- Safety, quality and traceability habits: following controlled instructions, recording results and protecting parts from contamination or damage.
- Blueprint and technical-document reading.
- Role-specific capability with CNC equipment, metrology, robotics, welding, fitting or nondestructive testing.
- Basic mathematics, computer literacy and the ability to communicate a defect clearly across shifts.
For a current U.S. example, GE Aerospace’s U.S. manufacturing and production careers page describes entry-level positions with paid training. It lists mechanical aptitude, detail, safety and quality as broadly useful and identifies CNC, metrology, blueprint reading and robotics as helpful depending on the posting. Treat those descriptions as employer-specific examples, not universal requirements.

Apprenticeships and paid work-based learning
Apprenticeships can combine wages, structured instruction and the supervised practice that a classroom alone cannot provide. Rolls-Royce’s apprenticeships and school-leaver information describes Level 3 engineering apprenticeships with practical activities such as fitting, welding and maintenance, as well as higher and degree routes. Entry standards, pay, duration and locations are specific to each vacancy.

| Decision | FAA maintenance route | Manufacturing or apprenticeship route |
|---|---|---|
| Primary outcome | Eligibility to test for Airframe, Powerplant or both mechanic ratings and perform work within those privileges | Competence in production, assembly, machining, inspection, test, quality or engineering; licensing depends on the role and jurisdiction |
| Typical starting point | FAA-certificated AMTS, documented civilian experience or eligible military background | Employer entry-level job, technical school, apprenticeship or engineering programme |
| Time structure | AMTS programmes are commonly about 18–24 months; experience route requires 18 months for one rating or 30 concurrent months for both | Varies by employer and qualification; some programmes combine paid work with formal study over several years |
| Evidence you must protect | Tasks, time and validation proving qualifying practical experience, if using the experience route | Training records, competency sign-offs, inspection results and any trade or academic qualification required by the employer |
| Best fit | People who want hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, repair or overhaul authority | People who prefer building hardware, process control, machining, quality, testing or engineering improvement |
| Geographic caveat | FAA rules are U.S.-specific | Apprenticeship rules and credentials vary by country, region and site |
A step-by-step plan for the maintenance track
- Read real job postings. Search airline, repair-station, engine-overhaul and component-maintenance vacancies. Note whether they ask for Powerplant only, A&P, prior turbine experience, shift availability, drug testing, background checks or employer-specific authorisation.
- Choose AMTS versus experience. Compare tuition, commute, access to running engines, graduation timing and the school’s support for testing. If you already work in aviation, ask whether your duties are genuinely qualifying and whether a certificated mechanic will validate them.
- Set up documentation on day one. Create a task log with dates, aircraft or component identifiers where permitted, task descriptions, hours and supervisor validation. Keep it legible and back it up securely. Do not inflate hours or copy generic tasks that you did not perform.
- Study to the FAA standards. Use the FAA test-requirements page and the current certification standards to map general, Airframe and Powerplant subjects. Build practice around troubleshooting, regulations, hardware, electrical fundamentals, engine systems, inspection methods and safety rather than memorising answer keys.
- Schedule testing only when your evidence is ready. Confirm eligibility, required endorsements or authorisations and test-center procedures. Budget for knowledge, oral and practical tests and for any retest or travel costs; fees and procedures can change.
- Apply for supervised first jobs. Target roles where an experienced mechanic can expose you to inspections, removals and installations, engine runs, borescope work, documentation and defect investigation. An initial job’s quality of supervision can matter more than its title.
A step-by-step plan for the manufacturing track
- Pick a job family. Decide whether you are aiming at machining, fitting and assembly, inspection and metrology, nondestructive testing, test operations, quality, tooling, materials and processes or manufacturing engineering. Each path has a different skill ladder.
- Close the specific skill gap. A short technical course, community-college certificate, robotics project, welding practice or blueprint-reading class can make your application concrete. Keep a portfolio of drawings, measured parts, process-improvement projects or safely documented shop work.
- Search by site and programme, not only company name. Aerospace plants recruit for particular shifts and production cells. Check the employer’s current careers pages, apprenticeship windows and travel or relocation requirements; an attractive programme may be limited to one country or facility.
- Translate non-aerospace experience. Manufacturing, automotive, marine, medical-device or precision-tool work can demonstrate measurement, tolerance control, CNC operation, root-cause analysis and controlled documentation. Describe the result and the equipment, not just “worked in a shop.”
- Prepare for practical selection. Expect questions or exercises on safety, reading a drawing, using measuring tools, identifying a defect, following a standard work instruction and escalating a deviation. Never claim an inspection or machine qualification you have not completed.
- Use the first two years deliberately. Seek rotations through production, quality and test where possible. Learn the site’s nonconformance, calibration, foreign-object-debris and configuration-control processes; those habits open later paths into inspection, specialist repair, supervision or manufacturing engineering.

Quality and human factors
Practice tool control, calibration checks, contamination prevention, foreign-object-debris awareness and independent inspection discipline. Develop the habit of pausing when a measurement conflicts with the drawing or a maintenance instruction conflicts with the observed condition. Clear shift handovers and precise defect descriptions prevent repeat work.
Digital competence
Most modern facilities use electronic work instructions, maintenance or manufacturing execution systems and barcode or serial-number traceability. Spreadsheet literacy, basic data analysis and comfort learning a controlled software system can distinguish an otherwise similar applicant. Follow the employer’s security rules when handling technical data.

BLS describes aircraft mechanics and service technicians working in hangars, repair stations and on airfields, with exposure to engine and equipment noise; the exact environment depends on the employer and role. Manufacturing cells may add lifting, standing, machine guarding, heat, coolant, clean-area controls or rotating shifts. Ask during interviews about hearing protection, personal protective equipment, shift premiums, overtime, indoor climate, physical lifting limits and how fatigue is managed.
Early-career progression can move in several directions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Maintenance: mechanic helper or trainee, certificated mechanic, lead technician, inspector, engine specialist, planner, reliability or supervisory work.
- Manufacturing: operator or assembler, senior technician, skilled machinist or fitter, inspector, test technician, quality specialist, cell lead, manufacturing engineer or operations supervisor.
- Across tracks: component repair, nondestructive testing, tooling, supplier quality, process improvement, technical instruction or regulatory compliance.
Progression depends on demonstrated competence, available vacancies, shift flexibility and the licences or degrees recognised by the employer. A certificate is valuable, but documented quality work and sound judgement determine whether you are trusted with more complex tasks.

Pay and employment outlook: read the scope correctly
For U.S. context, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a $79,870 median annual wage for aircraft mechanics and service technicians in May 2025. It projects 5% employment growth from 2025 through 2035 for aircraft mechanics and service technicians. The same BLS outlook cites about 13,100 openings per year across the broader aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics and technicians group for 2025–2035.
These are U.S. occupation-level figures, not engine-only maintenance salaries and not manufacturing-role estimates. Actual pay varies with region, employer, union status, shift, overtime, licence ratings, experience and the complexity of the equipment. Manufacturing technicians, quality specialists and engineers fall into different occupational categories, so do not use the mechanic median as a promise for a factory position.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming A&P is required for every aerospace job. Read the posting: production, quality and machining roles may have different prerequisites.
- Assuming a factory job grants maintenance privileges. Manufacturing training is not an FAA mechanic certificate and does not authorise regulated maintenance sign-offs.
- Counting classroom or military time automatically. The FAA evaluates actual qualifying experience and specialty; obtain an eligibility determination rather than guessing.
- Keeping a vague OJT diary. “Worked on engines” is weaker evidence than a dated task, time spent and certificated validation. Document consistently from the start.
- Choosing a programme by brand alone. Compare the actual site, qualification, work content, pay, shift and progression. Employer programmes open and close on different schedules.
- Ignoring geography. FAA credentials are U.S.-specific, and apprenticeship frameworks in the UK or elsewhere may not transfer. Check the authority and employer in the country where you intend to work.
- Underestimating the environment. Noise, shifts, protective equipment and repetitive or physical work are normal in many facilities. Ask for a realistic job preview.
- Overlooking quality behaviour. Aviation rewards traceability and honest escalation. Hiding a mistake is more damaging than reporting it early with a proposed containment step.
A practical decision checklist
Before enrolling or accepting an offer, write down the answers to these questions:
- Which exact job do I want in two years: Powerplant maintenance, assembly, machining, inspection, testing, quality or engineering?
- What credential does that job require in the country where I will work?
- Will this school or employer provide qualifying, supervised hands-on experience?
- How will I document tasks, competencies, hours and sign-offs?
- What are the total costs, paid-training terms, shift pattern, commute and relocation implications?
- Which tools, mathematics, software or physical capabilities must I improve before applying?
- What is the next progression step, and what evidence or qualification does it demand?
If your answers point to regulated maintenance in the United States, begin with the FAA eligibility and testing pages and build toward the Powerplant rating. If they point to making and improving hardware, target a manufacturing or apprenticeship vacancy whose training, location and qualification match your circumstances. Either way, the strongest application combines verifiable hands-on practice, disciplined records and a clear reason for choosing that job family.
