For a physical Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game deck, start with a 40-card Main Deck built around one clear strategy, then check every card against the current Forbidden & Limited List for your region and format. Konami’s North American English-language TCG materials are the basis for the rules and examples here; they do not establish legality for Master Duel, the OCG, or every country.

How many cards go in a Yu-Gi-Oh! deck?

Under Konami’s English-language rulebook, a legal deck can have a Main Deck of 40–60 cards, an Extra Deck of 0–15 cards, and a Side Deck of 0–15 cards. The Extra and Side Decks are separate from the Main Deck count. The Side Deck is for swapping cards between duels in a match, so a beginner playing casual single games may not need to make one right away.

Although 40 is not mandatory, it is a practical starting size: a larger Main Deck makes it less likely that you will draw the cards your strategy depends on. Konami’s rulebook advises: “Try to keep your Deck close to the 40-card minimum. Having a Deck with too many cards makes it hard to draw your best cards when you need them.” Read the official rulebook for the full deck-construction rules and current game mechanics.

What each deck section is for

  • Main Deck: Your core deck of 40–60 cards.
  • Extra Deck: Up to 15 Extra Deck monsters, such as Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz monsters. Follow the current rulebook for the complete rules and card mechanics.
  • Side Deck: Up to 15 cards that you may swap with cards in your Main or Extra Deck between duels in a match.

How many copies of a card can you use?

The general limit is three copies of a card with the same name across your Main, Extra, and Side Decks combined. That is a ceiling, not permission to play three of every card: the current Forbidden & Limited List can impose stricter limits on specific cards.

For the English-language North American TCG Advanced and Traditional formats, the official list available for this article is effective September 21, 2026. Its listed changes for Mind Master and Elder Entity Norden take effect September 28, 2026. Check the official Forbidden & Limited List before building or playing, and check again immediately before an event: restrictions can change, and this list is not a legality guide for Master Duel, the OCG, or other regions.

Which deck should a beginner start with?

If you want a ready-made base, a current Starter Deck is the simplest route. Konami describes these as fixed-content products whose cards generally work well together and are easy to use. Each includes a full deck of at least 40 cards and a Beginner’s Guide. Before buying, verify the exact product name, what is included, the language, and availability in your region; no particular Starter Deck is established here as currently available.

  • Never before has a structure deck been released revolving around such an iconic card
  • Duelist can find additional Synergy with cards from judgment of the light, Lord of the Tachyon galaxy, and Cosmo blazer booster sets
  • Package dimensions: 1.25" L x 3.88" W x 7.0" H

If you prefer to assemble a deck from individual cards, choose one cohesive strategy and select cards that support it. Avoid adding unrelated cards just because they are familiar or seem powerful: extra choices can make it harder to understand what your deck is trying to do. This is practical beginner guidance, not an official Konami rule or a tested deck recipe.

Starter Deck or Structure Deck?

Option What Konami says What that means for a beginner
Starter Deck A fixed-content deck with cards that generally work well together and are easy to use; includes at least 40 cards and a Beginner’s Guide. A straightforward assembled starting point. Check the specific product’s contents and availability before purchasing.
Structure Deck Designed for more advanced duelists and usually includes more complicated effects and synergies. It may demand more learning than a Starter Deck; the category description does not establish that every product has the same difficulty.
Egyptian God Deck Konami describes these as aimed at new and returning players; each contains 40 cards, a Dueling Guide, and a paper game mat. A product-category option to consider, not proof that a specific deck is the best choice or currently available.

These descriptions are from Konami’s New to Yu-Gi-Oh! guide. Start with a deck whose plan you can follow; once you understand it, make small changes you can explain rather than rebuilding around several unrelated ideas.

How to check that your deck is legal

  1. Choose the format and region. Confirm whether you are playing the physical TCG and which region’s rules apply. Do not assume a North American TCG list applies to Master Duel, the OCG, or another country.
  2. Count each deck separately. Make sure the Main Deck has 40–60 cards, and that the Extra and Side Decks each have no more than 15. The latter two may be empty.
  3. Check every card name against the current list. Remove Forbidden cards and stay within the combined one-copy or two-copy limits for Limited and Semi-limited cards. Count copies across all three decks together.
  4. Recheck close to play. Use the official list for your event’s region and format, and confirm its effective date. For the North American TCG list cited above, the September 28, 2026 changes to Mind Master and Elder Entity Norden take effect after the list’s September 21 effective date.

Do you need sleeves or a Side Deck to begin?

Sleeves are optional, not a deck-legality requirement. Konami’s rulebook says sleeves can help protect cards from bending or scratching; if you sleeve cards, use matching sleeves so they do not mark cards. A Side Deck is likewise optional within the stated deck limits, and its main use is swapping cards between duels in a match.
