How to Build a Balanced Materia Loadout for Every Character in Final Fantasy VII Remake

A balanced Final Fantasy VII Remake loadout gives the party reliable healing and enemy analysis, spreads the four basic elements instead of duplicating them blindly, and uses linked slots for a deliberate offensive or defensive purpose. Start with the weapons, armor and linked slots you actually have, then adjust each character’s materia to the next encounter rather than treating one build as permanent.

What a balanced materia loadout is supposed to do

Materia fitted to weapons and armor grants spells, abilities, summons and passive effects. Linked slots can also change how a materia works. The official system overview explains that pairing linked materia can combine their effects, which is why slot arrangement matters as much as the materia in your inventory.

A practical party should be able to accomplish five things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Identify an unfamiliar enemy and learn its resistances or weaknesses.
  • Exploit at least one useful elemental weakness without making the party dependent on a single spell.
  • Recover from damage when the active healer is pressured, staggered or unavailable.
  • Keep each character’s materia compatible with the way that character fights.
  • Use weapon upgrades and linked slots efficiently, while continuing to grow the materia and weapon abilities you actually use.

That is a flexible framework, not a claim that one arrangement is optimal for every chapter. Character availability, weapon upgrades, enemy resistances and your preferred amount of spellcasting all change the best answer.

How materia, linked slots and weapon upgrades interact

Weapon and armor slots

Choose the weapon and armor first, then inspect the number of slots and whether pairs are linked. A weapon upgrade can increase available materia slots, so revisit the loadout after investing in an upgrade. The PlayStation Blog’s official gameplay information also notes that each weapon has unique abilities whose proficiency rises through use.

Use an unlinked slot for a self-contained effect such as Assess, Healing, a basic elemental spell or a utility ability. Reserve linked pairs for combinations that gain something from being together, especially Elemental plus an elemental spell.

Elemental on a weapon versus armor

Link Elemental to an elemental spell and place the pair on a weapon when you want normal attacks to carry that element. Put the same pair on armor when you want resistance to that element instead. Square Enix documents both functions on its Remake system page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weapon infusion is powerful only when the matchup is favorable. If an enemy resists the element, absorbs it or otherwise benefits from it, the setup can become a liability. Armor resistance is the safer choice when you expect repeated elemental damage but do not know whether an infused weapon will connect effectively.

A five-step process for building any party

  1. Inspect equipment. Open the materia menu after selecting each weapon and armor piece. Count the slots, mark linked pairs and note which upgrade choices added capacity.
  2. Protect the essentials. Keep Assess equipped on a character who will be present for the encounter. Maintain Healing on at least two party members during the early game, as recommended by GameSpot’s April 28, 2020 loadout guide.
  3. Spread elemental coverage. Distribute Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind across the available characters before filling every slot with the same spell. The goal is to have a useful answer without sacrificing all of your support slots.
  4. Assign linked pairs to the next threat. Use Assess information to decide whether Elemental belongs on a weapon for offense or armor for defense. If the encounter does not favor an element, leave the pair unused or move it to armor.
  5. Invest in what you use. Materia gains experience through use, and weapon abilities gain proficiency through repeated activation. Do not fill slots with options you never cast merely because they are available.

Assess is more than a checklist item: it reports an enemy’s characteristics, resistances and weaknesses. The official explanation is available through Square Enix, and the same function is described in the PlayStation Blog’s November 25, 2019 feature. Use the information before committing a linked elemental setup.

Baseline party coverage at a glance

Party need Starting assignment Why it works When to change it
Enemy information Assess on a character who will enter the fight Reveals characteristics, resistances and weaknesses Move it when the assigned character is absent or lacks a slot
Emergency recovery Healing on two early-game members Prevents one interrupted healer from ending the fight Keep two reliable healers for difficult battles even after adding other recovery options
Elemental offense Spread Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind Preserves access to different weaknesses Concentrate a missing element for a specific boss only when the matchup justifies it
Linked utility Elemental plus a spell on weapon or armor Turns the same pair into offense or resistance Switch sides when the enemy resists, absorbs or heavily uses that element
Summon support Equip a summon when the encounter allows one Summons act after the gauge fills and can receive ATB commands Remove it when its slot would provide more value as a defensive or support materia

Cloud: physical pressure with adaptable elemental access

Recommended starting priorities

  • Assess: Keep it on Cloud when he is your most consistently controlled frontline character.
  • Healing or an element: Choose according to the rest of the party. Cloud can carry Healing when another member needs the offensive spell, or carry an element when healing is already covered.
  • Deadly Dodge: GameSpot specifically recommends this materia for Cloud, whose close-range style lets him turn evasive movement into pressure.
  • Elemental link: Put Elemental plus the weakness-relevant spell on Cloud’s weapon when you expect sustained melee contact with that element.

Cloud is described by Square Enix as a close-range sword fighter. That makes a weapon infusion attractive when the enemy is vulnerable and Cloud can remain in range, but it also makes a bad infusion costly: he may spend the entire battle striking with an element the target resists. If the scan does not support the matchup, use an unlinked physical setup or put the pair on armor instead.

Cloud’s slot decisions

Give Cloud the first linked pair only when it solves a defined problem. A single offensive element, Deadly Dodge and either Assess or Healing usually preserve more flexibility than several overlapping spell materia. If Cloud is not carrying recovery, make sure Barret or Aerith can heal without depending on a single ATB user.

Barret: ranged control and the party’s flexible carrier

Recommended starting priorities

  • Assess or Healing: Barret’s distance lets him continue acting while a frontline character retreats, making him a dependable backup for either function.
  • One missing elemental spell: Give Barret whichever element is absent from Cloud and Aerith rather than duplicating a spell automatically.
  • Elemental link when appropriate: GameSpot identifies Barret as an alternative Elemental carrier. Use the weapon link when the matchup supports his attacks; otherwise reserve the pair for armor.
  • Physical and ranged utility: Leave enough capacity for the abilities that support his ranged role instead of turning every slot into spellcasting.

Square Enix characterizes Barret as effective at range. That distance gives him a useful safety net: he can continue attacking while a melee character is repositioning and can carry a support materia without being your only healer. His loadout is therefore the easiest place to repair a coverage gap after Cloud and Aerith are assigned.

When Barret should take the elemental link

Use Barret as the Elemental weapon carrier when Cloud needs a neutral physical setup, when Barret’s weapon has the better linked-slot arrangement, or when the fight keeps Cloud away from the target. Do not force an elemental weapon simply because a linked pair is available; the guide’s recommendation is matchup-dependent.

Aerith: magic output, Magnify and Pray

Recommended starting priorities

  • Healing: Aerith’s magic proficiency makes her a natural primary caster, but keep a second Healing materia elsewhere so the party is not helpless if she is disabled.
  • Magnify linked with Healing: GameSpot recommends considering this combination for party-wide recovery. Confirm that the slots are linked before placing the pair.
  • Offensive elemental spell: Give Aerith the element that best matches the current enemy, especially when her spellcasting can exploit the weakness from a safe position.
  • Pray: GameSpot notes that Aerith’s Pray materia can provide a low-level party heal. It is an additional option, not a reason to remove every Healing materia from the rest of the group.

Square Enix identifies Aerith as magic-oriented. Build around that strength, but do not assume she must carry every spell. Her limited slots still need to cover survival and the encounter’s most useful element. Magnify is most valuable when party-wide healing or a broad spell effect solves a problem that a single-target cast cannot.

Balancing Aerith’s offense and support

For a boss with a clear elemental weakness, let Aerith carry the relevant spell and use Magnify only if the fight benefits from an area effect. In a battle dominated by incoming damage, pair Magnify with Healing and move the offensive element to Cloud or Barret. This preserves Aerith’s role without asking one character to perform every job at once.

Yuffie and the Intergrade edition boundary

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE adds Episode INTERmission, whose main character is Yuffie. The core-party recommendations above are substantiated for Cloud, Barret and Aerith; they should not be presented as a detailed, Yuffie-specific build for Episode INTERmission.

For Yuffie, apply the same decision sequence instead of copying another character’s assignment: inspect her current weapon and armor slots, equip Assess if she is the available investigator, preserve healing coverage elsewhere, and choose Elemental placement from the enemy scan. Verify the edition, region and platform because Intergrade content and upgrade availability can vary.

Where to put Elemental materia

Use a weapon link for a known weakness

Place Elemental beside Fire, Blizzard, Thunder or Wind on a weapon when Assess confirms that the target is vulnerable and the assigned character will attack consistently. Cloud is a natural choice for close-range pressure; Barret is a practical alternative when range or slot layout makes him better suited.

Use an armor link for incoming damage

Put the pair on armor when the enemy repeatedly uses that element or when offensive infusion is uncertain. This turns the same two materia into protection rather than damage and avoids committing your basic attacks to a potentially unfavorable element.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave the pair uncommitted when the scan is inconclusive

There is no requirement to fill every linked pair. A neutral weapon and an unlinked support materia can outperform an elemental setup that the enemy resists. Reassign the pair after the first scan or after a phase change changes the threat.

Elemental coverage: how to distribute Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind

GameSpot’s early-game recommendation is to distribute Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind across the party. It calls out Fire against human enemies and Thunder against many robots in early Shinra facilities, but those are encounter-specific pointers rather than universal weakness rules. Confirm every target with Assess.

Element Good assignment principle What not to assume
Fire Give it to the character with a free spell slot when human enemies are expected in early sections Every human enemy is weak to Fire
Blizzard Keep it available on whichever caster has the best safe slot One element should remain on every character
Thunder Prioritize it when early Shinra machinery makes it a likely answer All robots share the same resistance profile
Wind Use it to avoid leaving a fourth elemental category uncovered It is automatically the best choice for every flying or mobile enemy

The distribution is about options, not equal ownership. If an upcoming battle clearly favors one element, temporarily give that spell to the character who can cast it safely and move the others to healing, Assess or defense.

Healing, Assess and redundancy without wasting slots

Healing coverage

Two Healing materia are a strong early baseline because the active healer can be interrupted, separated from the group or forced to spend ATB on another action. GameSpot recommends this redundancy, then suggests considering Aerith’s Pray and her spellcaster strengths when she joins. Keep the second healer even when Pray is available if the encounter is demanding; Pray is an additional recovery route, not a guarantee that every situation is covered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assess coverage

Assess belongs on a character who will actually be present and controllable at the start of the encounter. If the party composition changes, move it before entering the fight. Use the result to decide both the spell you cast and whether Elemental belongs on a weapon or armor.

Support slots versus duplicate spells

After one or two characters cover Healing and one character carries Assess, spend remaining slots on the elements and abilities that address the next encounter. A third copy of the same basic spell is usually less useful than a missing element, defensive link or role-specific utility effect.

Weapon abilities and materia growth

Each weapon has unique abilities that increase in proficiency as they are used, according to the PlayStation Blog’s official description. Use an ability repeatedly if you want to learn it rather than switching weapons and never activating the move.

Materia also rewards actual use. Prioritize the spells, support effects and defensive combinations you expect to bring into multiple fights. A high-level option that sits unused does not help the current encounter as much as a lower-level materia that answers its immediate weakness or recovery problem.

  • Keep a frequently cast elemental spell equipped long enough to build it.
  • Rotate a less-used element into the party before a chapter that may require it.
  • Practice weapon abilities during ordinary encounters so proficiency is not left to a boss fight.
  • Recheck slot capacity after weapon upgrades; a new linked pair can change the whole assignment.

Summon materia: when the slot is worth it

Official Square Enix information explains that summons become available in qualifying battles after the summon gauge fills. They act automatically and can receive commands that cost ATB. Equip a summon when the encounter allows one and its actions will contribute meaningfully; otherwise, consider whether the slot would provide more consistent value as Healing, Assess, an element or a defensive link.

Do not judge a summon by ordinary random battles alone. Its value depends on whether the battle can fill the gauge and whether you can spare the slot without removing a necessary support effect.

Encounter-specific loadout examples

Early exploration with a mixed enemy group

  • Cloud: Assess, Deadly Dodge, one elemental spell and either Healing or a neutral support option.
  • Barret: Healing or the elemental spell missing from Cloud’s setup, plus a ranged-friendly ability.
  • Aerith, when available: Healing linked to Magnify or an offensive element, with Pray as an additional recovery tool.

This arrangement keeps two recovery routes, an enemy-analysis tool and more than one elemental answer without forcing an elemental weapon before you know the matchup.

Human-heavy encounter

GameSpot’s early-game advice points to Fire as a possible answer against human enemies. Confirm the weakness with Assess, then give Fire to the caster who can use it safely. Add an Elemental weapon link only if the scan supports it and the melee character will remain in range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Robot-heavy Shinra facility

GameSpot calls out Thunder against many robots in early Shinra facilities. Treat that as a useful starting hypothesis, not a substitute for the scan. If Thunder is effective, link it to the character whose weapon attacks can maintain contact; if the battle’s incoming damage is the larger danger, use the pair on armor instead.

Elemental boss or hazard fight

Identify the incoming element first. If the boss repeatedly uses it, armor resistance can protect the whole plan. If it has a clear vulnerability and predictable openings, a weapon link or Aerith’s offensive spell may finish phases faster. Keep at least one independent healer so the offensive plan does not collapse when the boss interrupts the caster.

How to compare two possible loadouts

When two arrangements both look plausible, score them against the same questions rather than comparing raw materia counts:

Question What a stronger answer looks like
Does the party cover the encounter’s likely weakness? At least one character can cast the useful element, with a weapon link only when the target is vulnerable.
Can the party recover if one member is disabled? Healing remains on two members early, with Pray or Magnify adding options rather than replacing all redundancy.
Are linked slots doing meaningful work? Elemental plus a spell is placed on weapon or armor for a specific offensive or defensive reason.
Does the build fit the character? Cloud emphasizes close-range pressure, Barret uses his range, and Aerith exploits magic strength.
Will the equipped materia gain experience? You regularly cast or activate the abilities instead of carrying unused options.
Does it survive a bad matchup? The party has at least one neutral damage route and does not rely on an element the target resists or absorbs.

Common mistakes and fixes

Putting the same element everywhere

Problem: The party has impressive damage in one matchup but no answer when an enemy resists that element.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Spread Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind, then concentrate only after Assess identifies a reason.

Using Elemental on a weapon without checking resistance

Problem: Normal attacks become ineffective or counterproductive.

Fix: Use the weapon ability repeatedly until its proficiency rises, then decide whether the new move changes the character’s materia needs.

Turning Aerith into the only solution

Problem: Every spell, heal and support effect sits on one magic-focused character.

Fix: Give Barret or Cloud a backup Healing materia and distribute at least one elemental spell outside Aerith’s slots.

A quick pre-battle checklist

  • Are the characters who carry Assess and Healing actually in this party?
  • Does every linked pair connect the intended materia?
  • Which element does the scan recommend, and is it better on a weapon or armor?
  • Does at least one character retain neutral physical or non-elemental options?
  • Will this setup let you use the weapon abilities and materia you want to grow?
  • Is a summon equipped only if the battle can activate it and the slot is worth the trade-off?

If the answer to those questions is yes, the loadout is balanced for the encounter even if it does not resemble a fixed “best build.” Reopen the menu after a new weapon, party change or enemy scan and make the smallest adjustment that solves the next problem.
