Start with your best-developed heroes, then keep only the combinations whose party effects help the heroes dealing damage, whose Chain Skills can be linked reliably, and whose defenses match the encounter. A four-damage-dealer raid squad, a timer-conscious Colosseum defense, and a story team that must survive unfamiliar mechanics can all be balanced in different ways.
Use the process below whenever you change modes, unlock a new hero, or return after a patch. It avoids a fragile “one best team” list and still gives you a concrete way to choose from the roster you already own.

What “balanced” means in Guardian Tales
Balance is a relationship between a team and a task, not a fixed recipe of one tank, one healer, and two attackers. A team is balanced when it produces enough damage, survives the encounter, and completes its win condition without carrying unnecessary roles that reduce its output.
| Activity | Primary objective | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Story and campaign stages | Clear waves, survive bosses, and handle mechanics you may not know yet | Reliable damage, a safe amount of durability or healing, and a leader whose weapon skill is practical in the stage |
| Colosseum | Defeat another player’s team while a timer limits the fight | How your formation survives the opening, whether damage arrives before the clock expires, and how the opposing lineup is likely to engage |
| Guild Raid | Deal as much damage as possible to a boss during the available attempts | Boss element, attack-type and party-buff synergy, Chain Skill reliability, and the amount of survivability the boss actually demands |
A beginner guide describes Raid as strongly damage-focused and Colosseum as a timed PvP mode with several viable strategies, so the same four heroes can be correct in one activity and inefficient in another. See the mode discussion in Guardian Tales Guides’ new-player team guide for that distinction.

Step 1: Name the mode and the win condition
Before comparing heroes, write down what “winning” means for this attempt. “I need a campaign team” is less useful than “I need to clear a boss without running out of healing,” while “I need a Raid team” should become “I need the highest repeatable boss damage against this week’s element.” Your answer determines which compromises are acceptable.
Story progression
Story stages reward a flexible core. You may not know the next enemy element or gimmick, and a failed run costs more time than a small theoretical damage loss. Give priority to a leader you can control comfortably, a second source of consistent damage, and enough protection to survive unavoidable attacks. If a healer or defensive support prevents repeated deaths, that slot is contributing damage indirectly by keeping the run alive.
Colosseum
Colosseum is not simply a four-player damage check. The timer means a team that survives indefinitely but cannot finish is also failing. Examine how your frontline absorbs the first engagement, whether back-line heroes can use their skills, and whether your damage reaches the opponent before the clock becomes the limiting factor. Because several strategies can work, judge a lineup by the matchups it is intended to handle rather than by a universal tier label.

Guild Raid
Raid usually places the greatest weight on repeatable damage and the boss-element matchup. Check the current rotation before investing resources. A September 2026 Guild Raid guide identifies the elemental counter matchup as a major consideration, while also warning that a well-invested off-element team can outperform a partially built counter team. Treat that as advice for that update context, not a permanent ranking; the current boss, patch, and your investment level still decide the result. The guide is available at LoadoutGG’s Guild Raid guide.
Step 2: Build a core from your strongest usable heroes
“Strongest” should mean strongest in your account for this job, not merely the highest rarity or the most popular name. Start with two or three heroes you have already leveled, evolved, awakened, and equipped. A newly obtained hero with no resources may have a higher ceiling but still produce less damage today than an invested hero who fits your existing party effects.
List each hero’s actual contribution
- Damage output: Identify whether the hero deals sustained or burst damage and whether the attack is melee, ranged, or another damage type relevant to your buffs.
- Party effect: Record exactly who benefits from the party buff. A bonus that improves only a damage type your other three heroes do not use is not helping the team you are assembling.
- Utility: Note crowd control, debuffs, shields, defense reduction, interruption, or other effects that solve the mode’s mechanics.
- Chain role: Write down the status condition the hero needs and the condition it creates after activation.
- Investment: Mark current level, evolution, Awakening, weapon, accessories, cards, and other account upgrades.
The official game site’s team-building guidance is to synergize party composition so overall damage is amplified: Guardian Tales official site. That means counting useful interactions, not just counting role labels. Two heroes called “supports” may provide redundant buffs, while an apparently offensive hero may supply the debuff that lets the rest of the party deal substantially more damage.

Choose the leader for the job
The leader is usually the hero you control directly, so consider more than the largest displayed statistic. A practical leader has a weapon skill you can aim or position reliably, can trigger the first part of your planned Chain Skill sequence, and benefits from the party effects surrounding them. In campaign content, control and safety may outweigh a small damage advantage. In Raid, a leader whose skill maintains the intended debuff or ailment can be more valuable than one with a higher isolated hit.

Write your proposed party effects beside the heroes they improve. If three members deal the same relevant damage type and one party effect strengthens that type, the effect has a clear purpose. If an effect boosts a statistic none of your damage dealers use, replace it or change the core.
A simple synergy audit
- Identify the main damage source. Decide which one or two heroes must deliver most of the team’s damage in this mode.
- Map every party effect. For each candidate, state which allies receive the benefit and whether it affects their real attack pattern.
- Remove conflicts. Avoid stacking effects that improve different damage types when your lineup can specialize without losing required utility.
- Check the leader. Make sure the leader’s weapon skill and normal attacks actually use the boosted statistic.
- Recheck after changing one slot. Replacing a single hero can make an earlier buff irrelevant, so recalculate the whole party rather than evaluating the new hero alone.
This audit is more dependable than copying a role template. A nominal tank that contributes no useful buff and forces your damage dealers into an unsupported type may be less balanced than a sturdier damage-support hybrid.
Step 4: Link Chain Skills before locking the lineup
Chain Skills are conditional links, not a button sequence that works automatically. A hero’s Chain Skill becomes available only when its required enemy status effect is present, and each hero has its own trigger and resulting effect. The official support article explains the mechanic and advises planning the conditions carefully: “How can I use Chain Skills?” (January 29, 2026).
The article’s exact wording is: “Carefully planing your team to meet those conditions will greatly improve your damage output.” The spelling is reproduced from the official page; the practical point is to plan the handoff between ailments.
Draw the ailment handoff
- Open each candidate hero’s Chain Skill details and record the condition required to activate it.
- Record the condition the skill applies after it hits.
- Choose an opener that your leader can apply consistently in the encounter.
- Place the next hero whose requirement matches that resulting condition.
- Continue until the planned sequence reaches the final skill. If one link requires a condition no earlier skill can create, the chain is not reliable for that lineup.
- Check timing, range, and cooldowns in the actual mode. A theoretical sequence that misses because the boss moves or becomes immune is not a dependable chain.
What a reliable chain looks like
Suppose your leader reliably applies condition A, the second hero’s skill requires A and applies B, and the third requires B and applies C. That is a coherent first-to-third link. If the fourth hero requires A again but the third replaces A with C, you must either reorder the skills or identify another source of A. Do not assume that four individually powerful Chain Skills will connect just because all four heroes are highly rated.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
For Raid, the September 2026 guide uses ailment handoffs to illustrate how a four-hero sequence can be linked. Use that example to understand the mechanism, then verify every condition in your own region and current patch rather than treating the named lineup as evergreen.
Step 5: Add only the survivability the encounter requires
Once your damage core and chain are coherent, test whether the team survives the specific failure that ends your runs. Add a tank, healer, shield, or defensive buff when it solves that failure; do not add one automatically because a template says every team needs one.
When a defensive slot is justified
- Your leader dies before the first Chain Skill can be completed.
- The boss has unavoidable damage that cannot be outplayed with positioning.
- Colosseum opponents reach your back line before your team can respond.
- A campaign stage contains attrition, environmental damage, or waves that prevent recovery between fights.
When defense is costing too much
If the team survives comfortably but repeatedly loses to the timer or fails to cross a Raid damage threshold, replace redundant protection with a compatible damage dealer or damage amplifier. The correct question is not “Do I have a healer?” but “What failure does this healer prevent, and is that failure still happening?” Keep the least defensive solution that makes the run consistent.
Step 6: Match damage to the encounter
For Guild Raid, inspect the boss element and current counter matchup before selecting weapons and party effects. The element advantage can be decisive, but the September 2026 guidance also notes that an extensively invested off-element team may beat a lightly invested counter team. Compare complete builds, not element icons in isolation.
Use attack-type synergy
Party effects should improve the attacks your chosen heroes actually perform. A ranged-focused effect is valuable when your principal damage dealers are ranged; it is less useful when the team’s damage comes from melee skills. Likewise, a debuff that increases damage only after a condition is applied has value only if your chain can maintain that condition during the boss window.
Separate matchup damage from account readiness
Make two notes for every candidate: the theoretical matchup and the current investment. If the counter-element group is several Awakening levels behind and lacks its intended weapon, compare the expected result with your mature off-element core. Revisit the decision after upgrades rather than dismantling a reliable team prematurely.

Step 7: Invest in the team in the right order
The official support guidance lists several in-game ways to strengthen a team: hero levels, evolution, Awakening, equipment enhancement, cards, Heavenhold landmarks, and collection knowledge. It also advises using a weapon that matches the hero’s element for better damage output. Read the full checklist at “How can I make my team stronger?” (January 29, 2026).
Prioritize upgrades that improve the whole plan
- Finish the core level and evolution requirements. A complete, usable core is more valuable than spreading partial upgrades across many heroes.
- Awaken the heroes that perform the team’s main jobs. Prioritize the leader and primary damage dealer, then the support whose buff or debuff enables them.
- Equip and enhance the intended weapons. Check the hero’s element and use a matching weapon when possible for the official-recommended damage benefit.
- Improve equipment, cards, and accessories that address the failure point. Offensive stats matter in a damage race; defensive stats matter when a specific hit ends the run.
- Develop Heavenhold landmarks and collection progress. These account-wide or roster-wide investments can raise the floor of multiple teams instead of one temporary lineup.
Do not compare a fully invested team with an unbuilt team and conclude that the unbuilt heroes are weak. Record the resource cost required to make each candidate functional, then choose the strongest result you can field now and the upgrade path that supports your next mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 8: Compare two candidate teams with the same checklist
When two lineups look close, score the questions below with concrete observations from your account. This is a practical framework synthesized from the official mechanics and mode guides, not an official in-game rating.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Content and objective | Which lineup is built for this exact activity and win condition? | Campaign survival, Colosseum timer and engagement, or Raid boss damage |
| Buff fit | How many core damage dealers benefit from each party effect? | Damage type, target statistic, and whether the leader uses it |
| Chain reliability | Can the planned order satisfy every status-effect requirement? | Opener, ailment handoffs, cooldowns, range, and immunity concerns |
| Damage matchup | Does the lineup answer the enemy’s element and defenses? | Current Raid boss element, attack type, debuffs, and weapon element |
| Survivability | What specific failure does the defensive slot prevent? | Deaths, missed skill windows, back-line access, or timer loss |
| Investment state | Which lineup is stronger with resources you already own? | Level, evolution, Awakening, weapons, equipment, cards, landmarks, and collection progress |
| Current version | Have recent regional updates changed a relevant skill or system? | Patch region, date, changed Chain Skills, and current in-game descriptions |
Choose the lineup that has no unresolved failure on the most important axis. A small advantage in one category should not outweigh a broken Chain Skill sequence or a leader who dies before using it.
Mode-specific team patterns
A campaign pattern: controlled leader plus safety net
Use your most comfortable leader, one compatible damage partner, one utility or debuff hero, and the smallest defensive investment that prevents deaths. If healing is required, choose the healer whose party effect or Chain Skill still supports the damage core. Test the team against the hardest stage you can repeatedly reach, not only an easy farming map.
A Colosseum pattern: survive the first contact, then finish
Build around the opposing formation and the timer. A frontline that buys time is useful only if your back line can convert that time into damage. Check whether your skills reach the intended targets, whether your formation exposes a fragile hero, and whether adding another defensive effect leaves too little damage to finish before the clock.
Best Value
A Raid pattern: maximize a repeatable chain
Start with the current boss element, select the best-invested compatible damage core, and map a complete Chain Skill sequence. Remove defensive slots that do not prevent a real failure, but keep any utility that enables uninterrupted damage windows. Compare a mature off-element team with a partially built counter-element team before spending scarce resources.
Account for system and regional updates
Named “best team” lists age quickly because heroes, skills, and progression systems change. Director Robin’s ninth letter, published April 14, 2025, described Grade 6 Myth for heroes that had completed Limit Break and introduced a Leader Skill system. It also stated that Leader Skill behavior and buff durations vary by content. Read the dated announcement at Director Robin’s 9th Letter, then confirm the current behavior in your game rather than assuming the 2025 description is unchanged.
Regional versions can also diverge. The official EU/NA/OC/LA patch note dated July 20, 2026 records changes to Seira’s Chain Skill damage and other party effects: 2026.07.21 Patch Note. This is useful evidence that exact skills can be revised; it is not a recommendation to use Seira in a general-purpose team. Check the patch history for your own region and read the current hero tooltip before committing resources.

“My damage is low despite using strong heroes.”
Check whether the party effects improve the heroes actually dealing damage, whether weapons match the relevant element, and whether the Chain Skills are activating in the intended order. A high-rarity hero with an unsupported damage type can contribute less than a well-built partner whose buff and ailment complete the team’s sequence.
“The chain stops after the first skill.”
Open each Chain Skill description and compare the required condition with the condition produced by the previous skill. Reorder the heroes, replace the opener, or remove a hero whose requirement cannot be met in this encounter. Also account for boss immunity, range, movement, and cooldown timing.
“The team survives but misses the timer.”
Identify the defensive slot that is preventing no current failure. Replace it with damage or a damage amplifier that fits the existing chain, then retest. In timed PvP and Raid, excess durability can be a real loss if it removes the damage needed to finish.
“The counter-element team performs worse.”
Compare investment levels, weapons, Awakening, equipment, and chain reliability. Element advantage is important, but a partly built counter team may not beat a mature off-element team. Upgrade the counter core before judging its ceiling, and check the current boss rotation.
