Uploading a video to YouTube alone does not make it a live broadcast. A local encoder gives you direct control but must keep running with a stable internet connection; a cloud service can stream uploaded files without leaving your computer on.
Choose how to send your videos to YouTube
YouTube accepts a live feed from software or hardware encoders. You can also use a hosted service that plays uploaded files and sends the feed from the cloud. In each case, YouTube receives a live stream; it does not simply rebroadcast a video from your channel library.

Local software encoder
A local encoder is suitable if you want to control playback and production yourself and can keep the computer, encoder, power and network connection available for the broadcast. YouTube’s setup guide does not specify a minimum computer model or hardware configuration, so test the exact files and settings on your system before relying on it unattended.

Hosted cloud service
A cloud service can play uploaded files and send them to YouTube without requiring your own computer to encode continuously. YouTube’s encoder guide identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. That reference does not verify providers’ current limits or performance; check file formats, resolution, looping and playlist controls, recovery behavior, storage, stream-key handling and pricing with the provider.

Hardware encoder
YouTube supports standalone hardware encoders, but its general setup guide does not say one is required for prerecorded playback. Before buying, confirm that the device supports your input files, continuous playback or playlists, YouTube ingestion and recovery from interruptions.
Prepare your channel, videos and rights
Check livestream eligibility
YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and test ahead of the planned start.
Check every part of the content
Uploading a video does not establish that you hold the rights to rebroadcast all of its elements. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights, and apply to archived content too. Review footage, music, stock assets, guest appearances and territorial restrictions before broadcasting.

Understand monetization separately
YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025 to clarify its inauthentic-content terminology, says repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. It treats reused content as distinct from copyright and considers whether the creator added significant commentary, modification or educational or entertainment value. The assessment is at channel level. Permission to use content does not by itself make a repetitive loop eligible for monetization.
Set up a local encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream. If you are testing, choose an unlisted or private test where those options are available.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder guide instructs creators to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. If the encoder offers YouTube as a destination, select it; otherwise paste the URL and key into its streaming settings.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your channel. Reset it in Studio if it is exposed.
- Choose a source and configure playback. Load the video or playlist in the encoder and enable looping if you need continuous playback. Confirm the playlist does not stop after one file and that transitions, audio and any overlays behave as intended.
- Set the connection and encoding parameters. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to choose a supported codec and bitrate for your exact resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. Check that the available upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate; do not choose a target solely because the encoder offers it.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, check stream health and confirm both picture and sound. For a scheduled stream, follow Studio’s prompt to go live after the preview appears.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Studio as applicable. For sessions where a complete replay matters, use shorter scheduled sessions rather than assuming a continuous daylong feed will archive in full.
Choose protocol and quality settings carefully
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current settings guidance lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 for supported scenarios, recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe frequency, and gives bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate. Match the setting to the actual output resolution and frame rate, then test the upload connection and stream health.
HLS is another ingestion option for compatible encoders and certain codec or HDR use cases. It has additional segment-format and playlist requirements, and higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous feed. For an ambient loop that does not depend on low-latency interaction, choose based on encoder compatibility and required features rather than assuming one protocol is always best.

Test reliability before leaving the stream unattended
YouTube recommends testing the stream, checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality. Run an end-to-end test before committing to a long broadcast:
- Play the intended video and verify sound, picture, aspect ratio and transitions.
- Confirm the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators are acceptable.
- Open the watch page on another device to check the viewer experience.
- Let the encoder reach the end of a file and confirm the next item starts or the loop resumes.
- Test what happens after a network interruption or encoder restart, and verify that recovery works as expected.
Power or internet loss, encoder crashes, expired credentials and missing or damaged source files can interrupt a local stream. Plan for those risks: check whether the encoder or service reconnects automatically, whether it alerts you, and how you will regain control. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing encoder failover for events; it does not guarantee automatic failover for every encoder or account.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guide does not promise a complete archive for broadcasts longer than 12 hours. If a replay matters, divide the programming into shorter scheduled sessions and confirm the current archive behavior in YouTube Studio.

No preview appears in Live Control Room
Check that the encoder is running, the server URL and stream key match the current Studio stream, and the encoder is sending a supported feed. If the key may have been exposed or copied incorrectly, reset or recopy it in Studio and reconnect.

The stream buffers or reports poor health
Check whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level your connection can maintain, and verify the codec and frame-rate settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
The broadcast stops after one video
Check the encoder’s playlist and repeat settings. Test through the end of a file and into the next one; uploading multiple videos does not itself create a continuous playlist.
The stream is live but picture or sound is wrong
Check the source file, encoder input, audio routing and output settings, then inspect both the Studio preview and watch page on another device. Make a complete test with the actual playlist before leaving the broadcast unattended.
The stream does not recover after an interruption
Check whether the encoder is still running, whether the network has returned, and whether the stream key or scheduled stream changed. Recovery behavior varies by encoder or service; test reconnect and restart procedures before depending on them.
The full livestream is not available as a replay
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but its cited guidance does not promise a complete archive for longer broadcasts. Use shorter sessions if preserving full replays is important.
