YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is not a promise that a single 24-hour session will be archived or stay connected.
Before you build the stream: clear the music rights
Do not start with the encoder. You need the necessary rights for every recording and every visual asset in the program. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent that automated interruption: YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask the rightsholder to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist.

Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and coordinate allowlisting with the relevant rightsholders before going live. This is especially important for Bollywood recordings, where rights may involve more than one party. Do not assume that a song being available elsewhere online, or having permission from one party, clears all relevant rights.

What you need on Debian
- A Debian host with FFmpeg installed. Check the local build with
ffmpeg -version; the Debian Bookworm FFmpeg manual is version-specific and does not establish which build is installed on your machine. Consult the matching FFmpeg documentation before relying on version-sensitive options. - A set of rights-cleared audio and, if used, video files, with storage sufficient for the complete program.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available and a stream created in YouTube Studio.
- A stable upload connection that can sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom. YouTube recommends running a speed test and testing representative audio and motion before the broadcast.
- A way to monitor FFmpeg and YouTube Live Control Room and restart or re-establish the stream if it fails.
The command below is an illustrative template, not a tested Debian service or FFmpeg invocation. Confirm the options supported by your installed build and the current YouTube settings before using it.
How do I stream a playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg?
1. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream you intend to use. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Keep the key private: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, repository, or log. Treat it like a credential.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe where to find the server URL and key. The key is the value the encoder uses to publish to the selected stream.
2. Choose a playlist and verify its inputs
Prepare a playlist containing only assets you are authorized to broadcast. For an audio-led channel, pair the music with a permitted static or moving visual; YouTube’s ingest requirements still apply to the outgoing video signal. Confirm that each file opens correctly, that audio levels are usable, and that the playlist order and repeat behavior are what you intend.

FFmpeg’s playlist handling and looping depend on input format, timestamps, and build behavior. Validate the playlist locally before attaching it to a public broadcast. A playlist file can use absolute paths, for example:

file '/srv/bollywood/track-02.mp4'Do not assume that concatenating unlike files will be seamless or gapless. Differences in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layout, or timestamps may require preparation or a different input strategy. Test transitions and repeat boundaries with representative assets.
3. Set YouTube-compatible output
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; listed audio codecs are AAC and MP3. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding, a keyframe interval of two seconds, and says not to exceed four seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For broad compatibility, this illustrative template uses H.264 video and AAC audio. Replace the placeholders with the server URL and key from Live Control Room. The example assumes a video playlist and encodes to 1080p at 30 fps; adjust the scale, frame-rate, bitrate, and audio handling to suit your sources and the settings YouTube currently recommends.

In particular, the example’s input must actually be suitable for looping with the installed FFmpeg build; test that the process reaches and repeats the end as expected. The ingest URL format and required path are the values YouTube provides, so do not copy the placeholder URL literally. Keep the real key out of shell history or other places where it could be exposed; use a controlled method to supply it.
YouTube’s current table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. That is a platform recommendation for that resolution, frame rate, and codec—not a bitrate to apply to every stream. Select bitrate based on the target output and your sustainable upload capacity. Higher settings are useful only if the host and connection can consistently deliver them.

4. Start, preview, and monitor
- Start FFmpeg and inspect its output for input errors, encoder errors, or repeated connection failures.
- Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health messages before treating the broadcast as live.
- Watch stream health throughout operation. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring health messages during the event.
- Check that the playlist advances and repeats as intended, and that audio and video remain synchronized at transitions.
For a long-running channel, arrange monitoring that can detect a stopped FFmpeg process or lost YouTube ingest and alert an operator. Decide in advance who will restart the encoder, confirm the new preview, and re-establish the broadcast if YouTube or the host drops the connection. The sample command alone does not provide a tested watchdog, process supervisor, or recovery guarantee.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That wording does not guarantee automatic archiving for a session lasting 12 hours or longer, and it does not establish that an FFmpeg process can remain connected indefinitely. For a channel intended to be live around the clock, plan for interruptions and verify YouTube’s current limits and behavior before relying on a single session.

One operational option is to use shorter scheduled sessions and arrange supervised restarts between them. That can make failures easier to detect and gives you a deliberate point to verify the stream again, but it also means the channel may not be continuously live during a restart. If you choose a long session instead, you still need a monitoring and recovery plan; neither duration removes the need to manage rights and stream health.

Troubleshooting common FFmpeg-to-YouTube failures

Costs, maintenance, and FFmpeg licensing
A self-hosted FFmpeg setup avoids a dedicated streaming service fee, but it relies on a Debian host, storage, power, and a sufficiently reliable upload connection being available whenever you want to broadcast. A home machine can stop streaming when it sleeps, loses power, or loses internet; a hosted Debian machine shifts that dependency to the host and its connectivity. No particular hardware or hosting purchases are prescribed.
FFmpeg’s project licensing page discusses LGPL licensing and compilation and distribution considerations. Running FFmpeg locally is not, by itself, a blanket legal conclusion about every use or redistribution; see the project’s license and legal considerations if you compile, distribute, or incorporate FFmpeg into another product.
