Before you start, clear the rights for every recording and composition: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a stream can be interrupted even when you have a license if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID.
Before setup: clear the music rights
YouTube’s Live Stream Terms and Conditions say the provider must have the rights needed to use live content on Google services, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Permission to use a song in a video does not automatically establish permission for continuous livestreaming, every territory, or archived playback.

Keep written records for each track or catalog. Confirm that permission covers both the sound recording and the composition, continuous live use, the territories where the stream will be available, and any replay or archive you plan to keep. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. For third-party licensed music, YouTube advises asking the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent an automated interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
Do not assume that crediting the artist, buying a track, or finding it online gives you the required rights. Which rights holder controls a particular Assamese song depends on the work and recording; verify that with the relevant rights holders before putting it on your playlist.

Choose how OBS will play the music
One video or audio file
For a single long mix or visual-and-audio file, add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. OBS restarts the file when playback ends. This is straightforward when you want one fixed sequence and have already assembled the material into a single file.
A playlist of separate tracks
For multiple files, use OBS’s VLC Video source. It supports a playlist, looping, and shuffle; VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS. A playlist makes it easier to replace a track or change ordering without rebuilding one large file. Check the sequence and behavior at track boundaries in a test run, especially if files have different audio levels or visual formats.
Build the OBS scene
- Install OBS and VLC if needed. VLC is required for the VLC Video source. Run OBS’s auto-configuration wizard as a starting point, then test the result rather than assuming its defaults suit a continuous stream.
- Create a scene. Add a static or animated visual appropriate for the channel, then add either a Media Source with looping enabled or a VLC Video source with your playlist. Use local copies of the files whose rights you have cleared.
- Check audio levels. Play the scene and watch the OBS audio mixer meters. Listen through transitions and verify that the audio is neither silent nor clipping.
- Test locally. Make a short test recording or private/unlisted stream. Confirm that video, audio, and track transitions behave as intended before announcing a continuous broadcast.
Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS
- Confirm live access. You need a YouTube channel with live-streaming access. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Open the stream settings for the event and copy the stream URL and stream key.
- Protect the key. YouTube describes the stream key as acting like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your event.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, choose YouTube or the appropriate service configuration and enter the event’s stream URL and key. Use RTMPS where available.
- Start a test stream and check YouTube’s stream health. Verify the public watch page from another device before treating the event as ready for viewers.
Set video, audio, and network settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. It publishes different bitrate recommendations by resolution and codec. For H.264, the listed recommended values include 5 Mbps at 720p30 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain them.

YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping about 20% headroom. OBS recommends a wired network connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A compatible Ethernet cable is useful only if your computer and router have suitable ports and the cable reaches; it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
Test for continuous playback and plan monitoring
- Run a longer private test before launch, not just a brief connection check.
- Listen through several track boundaries and confirm that the playlist loops as intended.
- Open the watch page on a separate device and verify that audio and visuals arrive correctly.
- Test with movement and audio similar to what the live stream will actually contain; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- Make sure the computer will not sleep, overheat, or lose power during the broadcast.
- Set a human monitoring and restart routine. A local OBS scene looping correctly does not guarantee 24/7 availability if the computer, internet connection, power, OBS, or YouTube connection fails.
Troubleshooting common problems
OBS does not show VLC Video
Install VLC, restart OBS, and check the Sources add menu again. If you only need one file, use Media Source and enable its Loop option instead.
The stream will not start
Check that live-streaming access has been enabled; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Confirm that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the current YouTube event, and that the key has not been mistyped or replaced.

YouTube interrupts the music stream
A Content ID match may cause a placeholder or interruption. Review the rights for the matched recording and composition, then contact the relevant owner about channel allowlisting if you have a third-party license. Do not simply restart the same un-cleared material.

Video drops frames or stream health is unstable
Lower the resolution or bitrate to a level your connection and computer can maintain, preserve the recommended two-second keyframe interval, and retest. Check available upload bandwidth with about 20% headroom, and use wired Ethernet where practical.
There is silence or a gap between tracks
Check the OBS mixer, source volume, playlist order, and individual file playback. Test transitions in a recording or private stream and correct gaps or mismatched levels in the source files or playlist before going public.
