Before your first shift, confirm whether you’ll be a W-2 employee or an independent contractor, how many hours and when you can expect to be paid, and what benefits the job actually offers. Then plan around take-home pay and pay dates—not the best-case schedule—and report work or income changes to benefit programs according to their own rules. In the United States, unemployment, public-benefit, tax, and health-coverage outcomes depend on your state, household, employer, and specific plan.
Before you start, confirm the terms that affect your budget
Ask the employer or staffing agency for the details in writing. A job described as “temporary” can be an agency placement, seasonal employee role, fixed-term job, or contractor arrangement; the label alone does not tell you what pay, tax treatment, or benefits to expect.

- Pay rate, likely weekly hours, pay dates, and the name of the entity that will pay you.
- Whether hours are guaranteed, how overtime works, and the expected assignment end date.
- Whether you will be treated as an employee or contractor for tax purposes.
- Any health-plan offer: the plan’s start date, enrollment deadline, employee premium, deductible, dependent terms, and plan summary.
- Work-related costs you will need to cover, such as commuting, childcare, required clothing, or meals away from home.
Do not assume a temporary worker is automatically eligible—or ineligible—for an employer health plan. Ask the employer which rules apply to this position and get the answer and plan documents before deciding whether to enroll.

Start with the amount you expect to receive after deductions, and place it on the date it should reach your account. A monthly total can disguise a cash shortfall if a bill is due before payday or if the assignment offers fewer hours than expected.

- List each expected payday and estimate the take-home amount using the information available from the employer.
- Set aside money for bills and essential spending due before the next deposit, including any new costs caused by the job.
- Make a conservative version of the plan using fewer hours than expected. Keep recurring commitments within that version where possible.
- Plan for the assignment to end and for a possible gap before the next job or paycheck. Choose a buffer that fits your actual bills and resources; there is no universal savings percentage that suits every household.
- After each payday, compare the deposit and pay-stub deductions with your estimate. Revise the plan if hours, deductions, or pay dates change.

Check whether the job is employee work or contractor work
This distinction affects how taxes are handled and may affect which workplace benefits or protections apply. A contract calling you an independent contractor does not settle the question by itself. The IRS considers the actual relationship, including behavioral control, financial control, and the type of relationship; written terms and employee-type benefits can be relevant too. See the IRS guidance on employee or independent-contractor classification.

- Ask who controls how the work is done and who supplies tools or pays business expenses.
- Check whether payment will be made through payroll or reported as contractor income, and whether taxes will be withheld.
- Keep the written agreement and pay records. If the real arrangement and the label do not appear to match, consult the IRS guidance or a qualified adviser rather than treating the contract wording as conclusive.
Do not assume a contractor payment has had taxes withheld. Employee payroll withholding is generally handled through the employer, while contractor tax obligations differ. Your pay statement or payment records should make the actual treatment clear.

Taking a temporary job does not, by itself, determine whether you can receive unemployment compensation. Each state administers its own unemployment insurance program and sets eligibility, benefit amounts, and duration under state law, as the U.S. Department of Labor overview explains.

If you already have a claim, contact your state unemployment agency or follow its claim and certification instructions. Ask how to report the start date, hours, and gross earnings, and whether the work changes your payment or next certification. Do not skip a required report because the job is short, part-time, or expected to end soon. The federal overview does not provide a nationwide partial-benefit formula or answer your state’s rules.
Report changes to public-benefit programs using their rules
Make a list of every program your household receives, then read the latest award notice or account instructions for each one. Report work and income changes when and as that program requires, and save confirmation. Starting work is not, by itself, a reason to stop a benefit without checking the program’s rules.

Medicaid
Medicaid financial eligibility depends on the eligibility group and state. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services explains that modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) rules apply to many children, pregnant women, parents, and adults, while some groups use other methods and states make certain coverage choices. Check your state Medicaid agency’s instructions and your notice rather than assuming that a particular number of hours or dollars ends coverage. See CMS eligibility policy information.
TANF and other assistance
TANF is federally funded but administered by states and tribal governments, whose requirements vary, according to USAGov’s TANF and welfare-benefits information. Reporting rules and calculations also vary across programs such as SNAP, housing, childcare assistance, and state supplements. Your program notice and agency—not a nationwide rule of thumb—are the right places to confirm a deadline or how earnings affect your case.

Compare health coverage before changing plans
Compare the actual coverage and dates before enrolling in a job plan or cancelling Marketplace coverage. Look at the plan’s effective date, premium, deductible and other out-of-pocket exposure, doctors and prescriptions, dependent coverage, and how long coverage may last relative to the assignment. A low premium alone does not tell you what care will cost.
If you have Marketplace coverage
An employer plan offer can affect eligibility for Marketplace premium tax credits. HealthCare.gov says the savings decision uses estimated annual household income and household size; an affordable job-based plan that meets minimum value can make you ineligible for a premium tax credit even if you decide not to enroll in that plan. Report the new job and changes in household income to the Marketplace promptly so that advance credits can be adjusted. Details are in HealthCare.gov’s coverage options for unemployed people.
If you may continue former-employer coverage
If coverage from a previous job ended, check the notice and plan documents to see whether COBRA continuation coverage is offered, what the election window is, and when coverage would begin. COBRA can mean paying the full premium yourself; HealthCare.gov describes the cost as 100% of the premium plus a small administrative fee. The Department of Labor’s termination information also notes that people continuing coverage may pay their own share, the former employer’s share, and an administrative charge. Confirm the precise cost and terms in your notice before comparing it with a Marketplace or new-employer plan.
Review tax withholding on wages and unemployment
Check your pay statement and withholding elections once work begins. The tax treatment depends in part on whether you are an employee or contractor, and unemployment compensation can also be taxable. The IRS says unemployment compensation is generally included in federal income and generally reported on Form 1099-G. Its 2025 Publication 525 says recipients may elect federal income-tax withholding at 10% by submitting Form W-4V to the paying office. That is an optional withholding rate for unemployment compensation, not a recommended rate for every worker or a measure of total tax owed. State tax treatment and your overall liability depend on your circumstances.
