AzuraCast supplies your station’s audio; a separate encoder must combine that audio with a still image and send the resulting video stream to YouTube Live. You can use the station’s public listen stream for AutoDJ output or route a live DJ’s audio through AzuraCast, then configure an encoder such as FFmpeg with your YouTube ingest details. AzuraCast’s documented output is radio audio, not a native YouTube video destination, so test the complete chain before making the broadcast public.

What you need

  • An AzuraCast station audio URL that the encoder can reach. For AutoDJ, use the station’s public listen stream or mount point. For a live DJ, use the audio route already configured to connect compatible broadcast software to AzuraCast’s Liquidsoap input. See AzuraCast’s streaming documentation and use the station’s own connection details rather than example addresses or credentials.
  • A still image, such as a station logo or cover image, and an always-available machine or server to run the encoder. The host needs to reach both the AzuraCast audio URL and YouTube’s ingest endpoint. This is a practical requirement of the setup, not a prescribed AzuraCast hardware specification.
  • A YouTube Live broadcast and its ingest settings from YouTube Studio. Keep the stream key private; it functions as a credential.
  • An encoder, for example FFmpeg, configured to take the audio stream and loop the image as video. Consult the FFmpeg manual for options, and adapt them to your installed build and actual input format.

If a reverse proxy prevents broadcaster software from connecting to AzuraCast, its encoder guidance recommends using the server’s direct address for broadcaster connections. Check the station’s connection details and AzuraCast encoder guide; do not expose DJ credentials or private URLs.

Configure the audio-and-image stream

Choose the audio source

For an AutoDJ station, point the encoder at the public listen stream or the appropriate mount point. AzuraCast mount points can provide different audio formats or bitrates; select one the encoder can decode and that is accessible from its host. For a live DJ, the encoder still needs an audio source that carries the station output. The precise route depends on how that station is configured, so verify it with the station’s displayed connection details instead of assuming a universal URL.

AzuraCast uses Liquidsoap to produce and manipulate station audio, while its broadcast frontend distributes that output. If the chosen listen URL is unreachable, the encoder cannot create the intended YouTube program from it.

  • CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.

Loop the still image and encode

Configure the encoder with two logical inputs: the station’s audio stream and the still image as a continuously looped video input. Set the output to a video and audio codec supported by YouTube, then direct it to the ingest address and stream key shown for your selected broadcast in YouTube Studio. The image must become a continuous video signal; sending only the radio audio will not produce a YouTube video with a picture.

There is no verified, universal FFmpeg command for every AzuraCast station and YouTube setup. Input protocols, mount formats, image dimensions, FFmpeg build options, and YouTube’s current ingest settings can differ. If you construct a command, validate it on your own host and test stream before relying on it; never paste a real stream key into a public script, article, log, or screenshot.

Set YouTube encoder values

YouTube’s live encoder guidance currently recommends RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). For an illustrative SDR H.264 stream, its recommendations include:

Start the broadcast and verify it

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live broadcast and open its stream settings. Copy the ingest details and stream key into the encoder’s private configuration.
  2. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube Studio to detect the incoming stream. Confirm that the intended broadcast, rather than another scheduled or active broadcast, is selected.
  3. Before making it public, check that the still image is visible, the station audio is present and in sync, and the stream continues without interruption. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status.
  4. Test ahead of the scheduled broadcast with conditions close to the intended stream. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health; confirm reconnect behavior as well, rather than assuming the encoder will recover correctly.

For information about permitted material, review YouTube’s live streaming guidance and the policies that apply to your channel and content. You remain responsible for having the rights needed to transmit the station’s music, recordings, artwork, and other material on YouTube. A static image does not change the rights status of the audio.

Troubleshoot common failures

No audio reaches YouTube

  • Check that the listen URL is publicly reachable from the encoder host and that you selected the correct mount point and audio format.
  • If the source is a live DJ input, recheck the station server, port, mount, and credentials using the station’s actual connection details.
  • Inspect AzuraCast’s Liquidsoap and station logs for audio-generation or routing issues. Its streaming documentation describes the audio path and mount points.

The encoder cannot connect to AzuraCast

Verify address, port, mount, and any required DJ credentials. If broadcaster connections are blocked by a reverse proxy, try the direct server address as described in the AzuraCast encoder guide. Keep credentials private while testing.

YouTube detects no video

Confirm that the encoder is generating continuous video from the looped image, not merely forwarding the station’s audio. Check that the output video and audio codecs are among those accepted by YouTube’s current encoder settings.

The stream is unstable or unhealthy

Reduce the video bitrate if the uplink cannot sustain it, check the encoder host’s network path, and run a test while monitoring YouTube’s stream-health notices. Verify that the encoder reconnects as expected if either the source or ingest connection drops.

Track details do not appear

AzuraCast provides a now-playing JSON endpoint that updates every few seconds. It can feed a separately built overlay, but the endpoint does not itself render track information into the video. A fixed image needs no overlay; showing changing titles and artists requires additional software to read the metadata and render it into the encoded video.

Choose where the encoder runs

The encoder must stay running and have outbound access to both the station audio source and YouTube. An existing always-on server may be convenient if it has sufficient network capacity and you can secure the stream key. A local or hosted machine is another option; consider its availability, bandwidth, access to the AzuraCast stream, and how you will protect credentials. A dedicated purchase or VPS is not inherently required if you already have a suitable always-on host.

A static image is the simpler choice when a logo or cover image is enough. A metadata overlay can make a radio stream more informative, but adds software and maintenance. Likewise, choose resolution and bitrate against available upload capacity rather than selecting the highest setting by default.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than forward AzuraCast’s live radio output, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection needs to stay on. It does not take a live camera feed or act as an AzuraCast audio-input encoder.

  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. To try the cloud workflow, start a StreamNeo free trial.
