To send the audio playing from a RadioBOSS automation playlist to YouTube Live, configure a RadioBOSS custom RTMP encoder with the YouTube stream URL and key, then add it as a broadcast encoder. YouTube offers RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP option; copy the URL and key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room rather than guessing the server address.

Before you start

  • RadioBOSS with access to its Broadcast settings. The DJSoft manual index identifies its help file as covering RadioBOSS 7.2; labels may differ in other installed versions. See the RadioBOSS manual.
  • A YouTube channel that can create or manage a live broadcast, and access to its stream settings in Live Control Room.
  • An image or video file for the background media field in RadioBOSS’s RTMP encoder.
  • A stable internet connection and permission for RadioBOSS to make outbound streaming connections through any firewall or security software.

RadioBOSS encodes the audio mix—the sound currently playing from the playlist—on the fly. Its general broadcast documentation describes this source behavior. DJSoft’s “Broadcasting Internet radio” manual states: “The software reads the audio data from a playlist and encodes it on the fly.”

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live broadcast you intend to use.
  2. Open the broadcast’s stream settings and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to that broadcast.
  3. Copy the server URL shown there. If you choose the encrypted connection, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL specifically; do not substitute an ordinary RTMP address. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. See YouTube Help: “Encrypt your stream using RTMPS”.

Keep the URL and key together for the same broadcast. YouTube’s Live Control Room is the source for the destination details; server addresses and keys should not be inferred from another event or copied from an unrelated setup.

Configure RadioBOSS’s custom RTMP encoder

  1. In RadioBOSS, open Settings → Options → Broadcast, then select Custom Encoders.
  2. In the custom encoder window, add an encoder and give it a recognizable name, such as YouTube Live. Select the RTMP option.
  3. Enter the YouTube destination URL and stream key in the RTMP encoder’s corresponding fields. Use the exact RTMPS URL from Live Control Room if you are using RTMPS, and follow the field formatting shown by your installed RadioBOSS version.
  4. Choose the image or video file requested for background media.
  5. If RadioBOSS presents an Install plugin control because the RTMP plugin is not installed, complete that installation step, then return to the encoder settings.
  6. Save or confirm the custom encoder configuration.

Add the encoder to RadioBOSS broadcasting

  1. Return to the Broadcast area in RadioBOSS options and add a streaming encoder.
  2. In the new encoder’s Server field, enter [rtmp].
  3. Select the custom encoder you named in the prior section.
  4. Save the broadcast encoder configuration and start the broadcast. RadioBOSS should send the current playlist audio mix to the YouTube destination.

Check RadioBOSS’s report or log for connection and encoder status. The general broadcast manual gives “Connected to server! (output N)” as a successful connection message in the server-broadcast workflow it describes; a YouTube custom-encoder status message can vary with the setup and software version.

RTMP or RTMPS?

RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. When YouTube provides an RTMPS URL for the broadcast, use that exact URL if you want the encrypted transport. YouTube’s help advises checking that the protocol and server are set to rtmps when diagnosing a connection. If the URL otherwise appears correct but RadioBOSS reports an SSL error, YouTube documents port 443 as a troubleshooting option. Follow the actual URL in Live Control Room and consult the current RadioBOSS documentation for how its fields handle protocol and port formatting.

Common connection problems

  • Connection rejected or no connection: Recheck the server URL and stream key against the selected broadcast in Live Control Room. An incorrect address or port can prevent a connection; RadioBOSS lists these among general causes of broadcast connection errors.
  • SSL error with RTMPS: Confirm that you used YouTube’s RTMPS URL rather than an ordinary RTMP URL. Check that the protocol and server are set to rtmps. YouTube identifies port 443 as a troubleshooting option when an SSL error persists despite an apparently correct URL.
  • RadioBOSS cannot reach the server: Check that the computer has network connectivity and that firewall or antivirus software is not blocking RadioBOSS. These are general RadioBOSS broadcast checks, not a diagnosis unique to YouTube.
  • The stream connects but the wrong audio is heard: RadioBOSS’s default broadcast source is the audio mix, meaning whatever is currently playing. Check the playlist and the audio being played in RadioBOSS.
  • The RTMP choice or plugin is unavailable: Use the encoder’s Install plugin control if shown, then revisit the custom encoder setup. If controls do not match these steps, confirm the installed RadioBOSS version and its current manual.

Direct YouTube setup versus RadioBOSS Cloud

The steps above configure RadioBOSS to send a custom RTMP stream directly to YouTube. RadioBOSS Cloud uses a different documented workflow: RadioBOSS connects to that service through Icecast, and RadioBOSS Cloud can transition between live and AutoDJ broadcasts. Those are instructions for sending audio to RadioBOSS Cloud, not a replacement for configuring YouTube as the direct RTMP destination. See RadioBOSS Cloud’s live broadcast guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than RadioBOSS’s live playlist mix, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. It also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your StreamNeo free day.
