How to Broadcast a Local News Radio Feed Continuously on YouTube

You can broadcast an authorized local news radio feed on YouTube by sending it through a live encoder: create a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter the stream URL and key in the encoder, add a visual layer for the radio audio, test the signal, then start it. A continuous broadcast needs a plan for rights, monitoring and recovery; YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee that any particular setup will stay live without interruption.

Before you start: channel access and rights

Enable live streaming in advance

Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned launch rather than on air day. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guide explain eligibility and activation.

Get permission for the specific YouTube use

Confirm in writing that the station’s feed agreement permits distribution on YouTube, including any archived version. You are responsible for holding the necessary rights to live and archived material, including music, and for meeting applicable laws and territory-specific licensing requirements. A station’s broadcast rights or syndication agreement do not automatically establish that YouTube simulcasting is permitted. Check rights for news audio, music, syndicated programming, graphics, logos and other material in the feed. YouTube’s terms set out the provider’s responsibility; local licensing questions depend on your jurisdiction and contracts.

Copyright restrictions can affect a live broadcast: YouTube identifies an active live-stream copyright strike and a live stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast as causes of live-stream restrictions. Resolve rights questions before streaming, rather than relying on a takedown or restriction as a test. YouTube’s live-stream restrictions guidance describes these cases.

How to set up the radio feed as a YouTube live stream

  1. Verify eligibility. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is verified, live streaming is enabled and there are no current restrictions that prevent going live. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Create or schedule the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. Protect the stream key. Enter it only in the encoder you control. Treat it like a password: anyone with the key may be able to send a signal to your broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before resuming.
  4. Connect the station audio and a visual. Configure a software or standalone hardware encoder to take the authorized radio audio feed and send a video signal. A radio-only source still needs an appropriate video component for an audiovisual YouTube broadcast. Use a station-approved still, schedule, headline panel or other suitable visual, and ensure it does not introduce unlicensed material. YouTube’s encoder guide covers software and hardware encoder workflows.
  5. Set the encoder and network for the actual feed. Use a supported encoding configuration, then match resolution and bitrate to the visual and the available upload connection. Recommended settings are detailed below; do not assume the highest resolution is best for a mostly static radio visual.
  6. Test before the public broadcast. Start the encoder in a test session or scheduled stream, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, listen for clean and balanced audio, and check the watch page. YouTube recommends testing in advance and leaving upload bandwidth headroom.
  7. Go live and monitor continuously. Start sending from the encoder, confirm the preview is receiving the feed, then start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the workflow requires it. Keep a person responsible for monitoring and a written recovery procedure for lost source audio, encoder failure or network failure.
  8. Plan the recording separately. Decide whether the audience needs an archive and whether to divide the broadcast into planned segments. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be saved as one archive. Verify the result in Studio.

Encoder settings for a radio simulcast

YouTube recommends RTMPS for the ordinary encoder workflow. Its current guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, the recommended bitrate is 128 Kbps; the recommendation for 5.1 audio is 384 Kbps. Choose the audio mode that matches the feed and encoder rather than upmixing stereo simply to use the larger number. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Setting YouTube guidance How to apply it
Ingest protocol RTMPS recommended for encoder streaming Select RTMPS where available and use the stream URL provided in Live Control Room.
Video rate control CBR recommended Set a constant bitrate supported by the chosen resolution and the real upload connection.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Set the interval in the encoder’s video output settings.
Stereo audio 128 Kbps recommended Use stereo if that matches the station source and intended presentation.
5.1 audio 384 Kbps recommended Use only if the source and encoder actually provide a 5.1 configuration.
H.264 video bitrate 1080p at 30 fps: 5 Mbps; 480p at 30 fps: 3 Mbps; 360p at 30 fps: 0.4 Mbps minimum These are listed recommended values for those H.264 resolution/frame-rate cases, not a requirement to use 1080p for radio.
Upload headroom 20% above total stream bitrate recommended Allow margin above the encoded bitrate; account for a backup stream too if one is sending concurrently.

The bitrate and headroom figures are YouTube Help recommendations, not independent performance measurements or guarantees. Available upload capacity can vary, so test from the actual broadcast location with the actual encoder settings. YouTube’s settings page lists supported configurations, and its network guidance explains bandwidth planning.

Keeping the broadcast continuous—and recovering from failure

A 24/7 schedule is an operating commitment, not a setting that guarantees uninterrupted service. YouTube recommends preparing the stream, checking the preview and stream health, monitoring during broadcast and testing encoder failover if a backup is part of the setup. Assign an operator to respond to faults; a second encoder is useful only if its switching procedure and network capacity have been rehearsed. YouTube’s streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.

  • Source loss: Confirm the station output is present at the encoder input, then inspect audio routing and any capture hardware. Use a documented fallback visual or audio source only if it is authorized and configured in advance.
  • Encoder stops sending: Check the encoder status, stream URL and key, then restart the encoder according to the recovery procedure. If the key may have been exposed, replace it before reconnecting.
  • Network instability or dropped frames: Check upload capacity and stream health, reduce bitrate or resolution if needed, and retest. Preserve the recommended bandwidth margin rather than sizing exactly to the measured stream rate.
  • Preview has video but no usable sound: Verify the selected audio input, channel layout and encoder audio output; listen to the preview or watch page before returning to air.
  • Broadcast is restricted or interrupted for rights: Check the channel’s restriction notices and the rights status of every component of the feed. Do not restart the same potentially infringing material until permissions and the cause are resolved.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?

Do not plan around a guaranteed single 24-hour archive. YouTube’s encoder help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but it does not promise that one uninterrupted session lasting 24 hours or longer will become a single saved video. If a dependable recording is part of the goal, consider scheduled shorter segments, monitor each session, and verify archive behavior in the channel before making the archive a publishing dependency. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance states the under-12-hour threshold.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a radio station whose authorized program is available as a recording or playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube stream running from uploaded video rather than leaving a home computer on. The setup is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, then go live. It plays uploaded material, not a live camera or direct live radio input, so confirm that this fits the station’s rights and workflow.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, streaming the upload as made without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

Monetization and operational expectations

YouTube’s encoder guidance says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a live stream. Eligibility and account-specific monetization rules should be checked in the current Studio interface. Neither an encoder choice nor a continuous schedule by itself establishes monetization eligibility or uninterrupted availability.
