To broadcast prerecorded VR gameplay as a YouTube Live stream, use OBS Studio as the encoder and add your files as an OBS VLC Video playlist. Set the order or shuffle behavior, enable playlist looping if you want it to repeat, then connect OBS to the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. You do not need a headset or capture card to stream recordings you already have.
Check YouTube Live access before you prepare the stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. The streamer must be at least 16. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.

Choose how OBS should play the recordings
| OBS source | Best for | Playback behavior | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One recording | Plays a single local file; its Loop option repeats that file. | No separate VLC installation is required for this source. |
| VLC Video | A library of recordings | Plays multiple files in a chosen order or shuffled, with playlist looping available. | VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. |
For a multi-video library, use VLC Video. OBS documents support for common media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM for Media Source; confirm your files play correctly in OBS before going live. The source options and VLC requirement are described in OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Build and test the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC to match OBS. Check whether your OBS installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, then install VLC with the same architecture. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the VLC Video source is not available.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name, then add the local recordings to its playlist.
- Set playback behavior. Arrange the files in the order you want, or select shuffle if sequence does not matter. Enable playlist looping if the library should repeat after the last file. For a single recording rather than a playlist, use Media Source and its Loop setting.
- Check the scene and sound. Confirm the video fits the canvas, the intended audio is audible in the OBS mixer, and transitions between files behave as expected. Run the playlist long enough to check a file change and, if looping, the transition from the final item back to the start.
- Test the actual broadcast path. Preview the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before making it public. Test with both audio and motion, and check the watch page on the channel and on a mobile device. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring the stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the one you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Do not show it in a screen recording or public screenshot.
- Choose YouTube’s RTMPS option where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport; its RTMPS guidance explains the connection option.
- Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that the video and audio are correct before starting or making the event public.
Set a bitrate and keyframe interval the connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose settings that fit both your output resolution and frame rate and your sustained upload capacity. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 guidance, accessed 2026-10-03; they are not guarantees that a particular internet connection will sustain the stream.

| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Set the matching resolution and frame rate in OBS, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. If your connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the output settings rather than relying on a peak speed reading. YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for different devices and network conditions. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Keep the broadcast compliant and monitored
These steps explain how to send existing recordings to YouTube; they do not establish that you have permission to broadcast every element in them. Check the rights and applicable permissions for game footage, music, voice chat and other third-party material before streaming. Technical ability to send a file is not proof that its contents may be rebroadcast.

While the stream is live, monitor the video and audio quality in Live Control Room. Keep a local archive if you need one and verify that the recording is intact. When the YouTube event has ended, stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube’s live tips cover monitoring and wrap-up checks.
Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS—then restart OBS.
- The playlist stops after one file: Check that the source is VLC Video rather than a single-file Media Source, and enable playlist looping if you want it to repeat.
- Files play in the wrong order: Review the playlist order in the VLC Video source. If shuffle is selected, turn it off to preserve the sequence.
- YouTube does not accept the encoder connection: Confirm that the stream URL and key in OBS match the selected stream in Live Control Room. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The preview buffers or stream health degrades: Check that the sustained upload capacity can handle the chosen bitrate. Reduce the bitrate or output resolution/frame rate and test again.
- The broadcast cannot be started on a new channel: Verify channel eligibility and live activation status; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
