Before starting, make sure you have the rights to stream every track in the territories you serve: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream with an unresolved match.
What you need for an all-day radio stream
YouTube Live expects an audio-video stream, so a radio feed needs a visual as well as sound. Use a station-branded still image or a looping visual, and route the station audio into an encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as the way to use external hardware and produce an advanced stream; its setup guidance also lists mixers as one possible component, not a requirement for every setup. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the general workflow.

- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled.
- An encoder, such as OBS on a desktop computer or FFmpeg on a VPS.
- A stable audio source and a visual signal.
- The stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.
- Written clearance for the music and other content you plan to broadcast.
A mixer is useful when you need to combine or adjust microphones and other live audio feeds before encoding. If the station already supplies a ready-mixed feed, first check that source’s output and the encoder’s input; a mixer does not replace the encoder or rights clearance.
Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, activate live streaming in YouTube Studio. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming start guide.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
- Connect the encoder. If your encoder has a YouTube integration, select it and authenticate as prompted. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key from Studio into the encoder’s server and key fields. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Keep it private and reset it in Studio if it is exposed.
- Send both audio and video. Route the station’s program audio into the encoder and add a station image or visual loop. Confirm that the encoder’s input meters show audio and that the video is not blank.
- Start and verify. Start the encoder and check for its preview and a healthy connection in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and then select Go live.
- Monitor the feed. Check the audio source, outgoing connection, live status and any rights alerts while the station is on air.
Google’s Live Streaming API guide documents a 24/7 broadcast use case, but that is not a guarantee that a particular encoder, connection or channel will remain uninterrupted. The API guide describes the platform use case; plan for operational monitoring and recovery.

Choose how to keep the stream running

Either setup needs a working audio source, video signal, outgoing connection and monitoring. Compare the staffing and technical skills available to the station, the restart and alerting arrangements you can maintain, and the cost of hosted compute against local power and connectivity. Clear music rights before going live
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants, as well as applicable clearances in the live-stream territory. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If a match remains after a warning, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube’s live-stream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

- Obtain written clearance covering live streaming, the territories where the stream will be available, and any archive or replay use you intend to allow.
- Confirm with relevant rights holders whether your channel must be added to their Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.
- Do not assume a license in one jurisdiction covers listeners or platform availability elsewhere. The correct licensing route depends on the station’s operating jurisdiction, target territories and track-by-track rights.
Plan for archives and platform limits
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not promise an automatic archive for a single stream longer than 12 hours; if preserving replays matters, consider shorter program blocks or a separate recording, and verify the current behavior in Studio. The same live-start guide states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Most single-station setups will not need that many, but keep the limits in mind if you operate multiple feeds.

Troubleshoot common launch problems
- No live preview in Studio: Check that the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the channel’s live activation is complete. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Preview appears, but there is no sound: Confirm the station feed reaches the encoder’s selected audio input, then check its meters and output. A working video image alone does not establish that audio is being sent.
- The stream is interrupted after a rights warning: Review the matched content and resolve the rights issue. If the music is licensed, ask the rights holder whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
- The computer or encoder stops: The stream needs an active audio-video signal and outgoing connection. For a local OBS workflow, check the computer, encoder and internet connection; for a VPS workflow, check the hosted process and configure monitoring and restart behavior.
- You need an archive of a long broadcast: YouTube’s stated automatic archive case is a stream under 12 hours. Use shorter blocks or make a separate recording if you need a dependable replay, and check Studio for current behavior.
