Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The right route depends on what stopped working: try your Apple Account’s purchase history for an iPad or iPod touch app, check whether the device can still run it, use a community preservation project for certain clickwheel iPods, or identify the exact iPod Classic before seeking a battery repair.
Choose the recovery route that matches what you lost
| What you want to restore | First route to try | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| An app or game previously purchased for iPad or iPod touch | Check the purchase history for the Apple Account used to buy it | The item may have been removed, or the device may not meet its requirements |
| A game made for an iPod with a clickwheel | Check the current instructions for the community iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project | The project’s reported compatibility is limited to specific iPod generations; it is not an Apple-supported recovery route |
| A physical iPod Classic that will not hold a charge | Identify its exact generation and case thickness, then check service or a model-matched battery repair | Battery fit varies, and opening the device risks damaging delicate parts |
Can you redownload an old iPad or iPod touch game you bought?
Often, if the game is still offered by Apple. Use the Apple Account that made the original purchase and look in its purchase history for the app. Apple’s iPad and iPod touch support guides describe redownloading previously purchased content from the account. A purchase record is a starting point, not a guarantee that the game remains downloadable.

Apple’s terms allow content to be removed from its services. If that happens, the item may no longer be available to access or redownload through Apple. Keep personal backups of content you can still access, and do not assume a past purchase will remain available indefinitely.

Why won’t an old iPad install or run a game?
Finding a game in purchase history and being able to use it on a particular device are separate questions. Apple’s developer documentation explains that App Store compatibility can depend on an app’s required hardware capabilities. The device’s generation and operating system can therefore matter even when the app is associated with your account.
- If the game is missing from purchase history: confirm that you are using the Apple Account that bought it, then check whether the item is still offered.
- If it appears but cannot be downloaded: the app may no longer be available, or the device may not meet its requirements.
- If it downloads but will not work: availability did not establish compatibility. Check the app’s requirements against the device and its operating system.
Do not treat “owned,” “available to download,” and “runs on this device” as interchangeable. Each is a different condition.
Can you still play games on an old iPod Classic or nano?
Some clickwheel iPod games have been the subject of community preservation work. In a 2024 post, OlsroFR’s iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project reported preserving 52 of 54 games. That is the project author’s snapshot at the time of the post, not an independently audited count or a verified current status.
Rank #2
The post names iPod nano generations 3, 4, and 5, and iPod Classic generations 5, 6, and 7, as compatible with the project’s approach. It also discusses account-linked authorization and recovery constraints. These limits matter: a project that supports certain models does not establish that every clickwheel iPod, game, or reader’s account will work.

How do you replace an iPod Classic battery?
First identify the exact iPod Classic model, including whether it has a thin or thick case. iFixit lists one replacement battery for 80 GB, 120 GB, and thin 160 GB models, and a different battery for the thick 160 GB model. Those fit details are specific to the listed iPod Classic variants; they do not establish compatibility with iPads, iPod touch, or other iPod models.
- Identify the device: confirm its generation, storage variant, and case thickness before ordering a part.
- Check service options: Apple says iPod service depends on parts availability and location. Its support materials also include vintage iPod and iPad product categories; check availability for your exact device and region rather than assuming service is offered.
- Assess the repair: iFixit’s battery replacement guide describes the opening process and tools. It cautions that internal components and the rear panel are delicate, so stop if you cannot open the case without forcing it.
- Match the battery to the model: compare the replacement listing with the exact device variant. A battery listed for one Classic thickness is not evidence of fit for another.
If the model is uncertain or the case is difficult to open, seek a repair option that can identify the device and handle its delicate connectors. Do not order based on “iPod Classic” alone.
Quick Recap
What to preserve before a device or app disappears
- Keep a record of the Apple Account used for purchases and check its purchase history while the item remains available.
- Maintain personal backups of content you can still access; Apple warns that content may be removed from its services.
- For a clickwheel iPod, confirm the exact generation and consult the preservation project’s current instructions and authorization requirements.
- For battery trouble, identify the model and case thickness before seeking parts or service.
