Breeding in Palworld requires three things: a Breeding Farm, one male and one female Pal assigned to it, and a Cake. After the pair produces an egg, hatch it in an incubator. The offspring can inherit up to four passive skills drawn from both parents, while version 1.0 adds a small, officially confirmed chance of a stronger mutation with a unique passive. Because exact mutation odds and many passive values are not published by Pocketpair, treat community percentages as estimates and verify details in your current game version.

What you need before breeding
The breeding loop is simple, but each requirement matters. Prepare all four before assigning Pals so the farm can start producing immediately.

1. A Breeding Farm
Community progression guides place the Breeding Farm unlock at about player level 19. Those guides commonly list a construction cost of roughly 100 Wood, 20 Stone and 50 Fiber. The level and recipe are community-reported rather than a Pocketpair-published specification, so check the Technology menu in your world for the exact unlock and materials on your patch.
2. A compatible pair
Assign one male and one female Pal to the Breeding Farm. The pair must be actively assigned to the farm rather than merely standing nearby. If the farm does not recognize them, pick each Pal up at the base and throw it at the farm again, then confirm that both portraits appear in the farm interface.

3. A Cake
Put a Cake into the Breeding Farm’s designated box. The farm uses the cake to begin an egg-production cycle. Version 1.0 lists four cake types with different breeding effects; their roles are compared below. Do not assume that a cake marketed by a community guide as “Extravagant Vegetable Cake” is a separate official item: the official 1.0 list uses the name Deluxe Vegetable Cake, and the conflicting name makes old mutation guides unreliable.
4. An incubator and room for the egg
Once an egg appears, collect it and place it in an Egg Incubator. The incubator’s displayed comfort and temperature conditions affect the process, so adjust nearby environmental objects when the interface reports that the egg is too hot or too cold. You can queue additional eggs only if you have enough incubator capacity and storage space.

- Unlock and build the farm. Open the Technology menu, unlock Breeding Farm when it becomes available, and place it on a level area inside your base. Leave enough room to walk around the pen and reach its storage box.
- Assign the parents. Select a male Pal and a female Pal from your base or Palbox and assign both to the farm. Verify that the farm shows one Pal of each sex; two males or two females will not start the intended pair.
- Add a Cake. Open the farm’s storage slot and place the selected Cake inside. A cake in your inventory does not count until it is placed in the farm.
- Wait for the egg. The pair works through its production cycle while the farm remains active. Keep the parents assigned and make sure the cake has not been removed or consumed by another base process.
- Collect and incubate the egg. Move the egg to an Egg Incubator, read the displayed environmental requirement, and adjust the surrounding temperature if necessary.
- Hatch and inspect the result. Open the new Pal’s details as soon as it hatches. Record its passive skills, active skills and any mutation indicator before deciding whether to keep it as a parent.
- Repeat deliberately. Keep offspring that carry a useful target passive, then pair the best one with a parent carrying the remaining targets. Breeding several eggs is more reliable than trying to solve a multi-passive combination with one perfect attempt.
How passive-skill inheritance works
When an egg is generated, the game combines the passive skills on both parents into one candidate pool. The child can draw up to four passives from that merged pool. It is not a guaranteed one-for-one copy: a parent can contribute nothing, one skill, several skills or an unwanted skill, and the child may receive any combination allowed by the roll.
Why clean parents are better
A parent with four mixed passives adds four entries to the pool, including traits you may not want. That dilution makes a particular combination harder to obtain. Community breeding guides therefore recommend keeping the total number of desired passives across both parents at four or fewer whenever possible. A parent with only the trait you need is usually more useful than a stronger-looking parent carrying several unrelated traits.
Common parent splits

These splits describe workable community strategies, not guaranteed probabilities. If an offspring keeps one target but loses the others, use that offspring as the next stepping stone instead of discarding the whole line.
Cleaning a contaminated line
Suppose a useful Pal has one target passive and three unwanted ones. Breed it with a clean mate that has no competing passives. Keep eggs that retain the target while dropping unwanted traits, then repeat with the cleanest result. One or two generations can isolate a good trait, although each egg remains a probability roll.

A reliable passive-breeding workflow
Define the target before spending cakes
Write down the exact passive set you want for the Pal’s job: combat damage, movement, work speed, riding utility or another role. Separating roles prevents you from keeping an attractive but incompatible combination and gives every parent a clear purpose.
Start with the cleanest available parents
Inspect both parents in the Pal details screen. Prefer parents with fewer unwanted passives, even if their level or individual stats are lower. The inheritance system cares about the passive pool; a high-level parent with four mixed traits can be a poor donor.
Breed in batches
Because inheritance is probabilistic, run multiple eggs before changing your plan. Keep a simple note of each offspring’s passives and mark the best male and female separately. This avoids accidentally selling the only useful carrier while chasing a later hatch.
Advance one target at a time
When a child inherits at least one target, pair it with a parent carrying a different target. This staged approach reduces unwanted entries in the pool and makes it easier to identify which generation improved the line.
Inspect every hatch
Do not rely on the parents’ appearance, level or species name to predict passives. Open the details panel for each hatch and check all passive slots. Keep a near miss if it removes an unwanted trait or provides a clean bridge to the next generation.
Version 1.0 mutations
Palworld 1.0 introduced a low-chance mutation outcome. Pocketpair’s official 1.0 release changelog describes a mutation as a breeding result that can be stronger than the normal result, with higher stats and one unique passive. It is an additional probability outcome, not a replacement for ordinary inheritance, so most eggs can still hatch normally.

What is confirmed
- Mutations were added to breeding in version 1.0.
- A mutation can produce higher stats than the normal breeding result.
- The mutation carries one unique passive.
- The official changelog does not publish a base mutation percentage or the exact stat increase.
Community-reported mutation details
Community guides report a mutation pool containing Babysitter, Immortal, Heavily Armored, Skymarcher and Idiosyncratic. They also report a base chance of about 1% per egg and a rise to about 3% when using a cake described in some guides as “Extravagant Vegetable Cake.” Those figures are unverified, and the cake name conflicts with Pocketpair’s official term Deluxe Vegetable Cake. Use the values as rough planning estimates only, not as a guarantee or an in-game stat.
The official source also does not state whether every Pal species can receive every mutation passive. If a mutation appears, check the child’s details and the current patch notes rather than assuming a community list is exhaustive.

How to farm for a mutation
- Choose a pair that already produces the species and passive direction you want; mutation hunting does not remove the need for a sound parent line.
- Select the cake whose current in-game description raises mutation odds. In 1.0 documentation this is Deluxe Vegetable Cake, but verify the label in your build.
- Run many breeding cycles and inspect every egg. A reported 1% base chance means a long run of ordinary eggs is expected, and even a reported 3% boosted chance still leaves most eggs non-mutated.
- When a mutation hatches, compare its stats and unique passive with your existing line before replacing a proven parent.
Which breeding Cake should you use?
Pocketpair’s 1.0 cake list gives each type a different purpose. The effects below are official descriptions; the exact numerical bonus for each effect is not supplied.

Do not combine the table’s effects into guaranteed outcomes. A Vegetable Cake’s two-egg effect does not guarantee good passives, and a Special Cake does not guarantee four inherited skills. Choose the cake according to the bottleneck in your current line: number of attempts, mutation chance, stat growth or passive count.
Active skills after the breeding hotfix
A hotfix changed active-skill inheritance so that inherited active skills are selected at random from the three active-skill slots on each parent. This is separate from passive inheritance. A parent carrying the desired active skill does not guarantee that the child receives it, and the child’s passive roll cannot be used to predict its active skills.
When an active skill is essential, inspect every hatch and retain a child that actually rolled it. Keep the desired active skill in one of the parent’s three active slots before breeding, but plan for multiple attempts because the hotfix uses random selection.

Optional advanced methods
Pal Surgery Table
Community reports describe a Pal Surgery Table unlocking at about player level 36 and allowing a missing non-Rainbow skill to be implanted into a near-miss parent. These reports also say that Legend, Lucky and Swift are not implantable. Pocketpair has not established these level and eligibility details in the material available here, so treat the table as an optional, patch-dependent shortcut and confirm the operation’s current interface before committing a valuable Pal.
Surgery is most useful when a parent already has several correct passives and only one ordinary skill is missing. It does not replace the need to breed for species, sex, active skills or mutation outcomes, and reported restrictions mean it cannot be used to force every famous passive onto a parent.
Partner skills that affect throughput
Community reports attribute two partner-skill effects to specific Pals: Dynamoff reportedly cuts incubation time by 20–40%, while Braloha reportedly increases Breeding Farm egg production by 20–50%. Those ranges are not official specifications in the cited material and may vary by partner-skill level or patch. If you use one, read the current in-game partner-skill description and measure the displayed timer in your world rather than assuming the top of the reported range.
Incubation, world settings and production speed
Pocketpair’s 1.0 notes state that incubation was halved in newly created Normal and Hard worlds. That change applies to worlds created under the 1.0 rules; an older save or a different difficulty can show different timers. Always use the incubator’s live timer as the authority for your world.
For a high-volume program, place enough incubators to process the eggs your farm produces, keep the temperature requirement satisfied, and collect finished Pals before storage fills. A faster farm without incubator capacity simply moves the bottleneck from egg production to hatching.
Troubleshooting common breeding problems
The farm will not produce an egg
- Confirm that exactly one male and one female are assigned in the farm interface.
- Check that a Cake is in the farm’s storage slot, not only in your inventory.
- Reassign both Pals if either is stuck, starving or assigned to another station.
- Move the farm or clear nearby obstructions if the Pals cannot reach the pen.
The child has none of the passives you wanted
This is a possible inheritance result, especially when both parents carry several unwanted traits. Return to cleaner parents, reduce the combined desired set to four or fewer, and breed a batch rather than judging the line from one egg.

The child has the right passive but the wrong active skill
Passive and active inheritance are separate. The hotfix makes active-skill selection random from the parents’ three active slots, so keep hatching or adjust the active slots on the parents before another batch.

Mutation is intentionally rare, and Pocketpair has not published an official odds figure. A long sequence of normal eggs does not prove that the farm or cake is broken. Verify that you are using the current cake name and patch, then continue with a documented batch size and inspect every hatch.
A guide gives a different passive percentage
Do not merge conflicting numbers. Community guides disagree on several values: Legend is reported with different Movement Speed bonuses, Lucky Work Speed is also reported with different bonuses, and Ferocious is variously described as a farm-speed effect or an Attack bonus. The exact figures are not established here, so use the passive’s live in-game description and current patch notes.
Claims to treat cautiously
A 2024 Steam forum post claimed that some eggs retained passives neither parent possessed. That report was unconfirmed and predates later patches; there is no basis here to assume the behavior still exists in version 1.0. Plan breeding around the documented merged-parent pool, and record any unexpected result with the current patch before treating it as a rule.
Likewise, do not assume that a mutation’s unique passive, a surgery restriction or a partner-skill percentage applies identically across every species, world age or difficulty. Patch notes and the Pal details screen are safer authorities than an undated guide.
