The correct method depends on your edition. Windows 8.1 has a built-in Navigation setting that sends you to the desktop when you sign in. Original Windows 8 does not have that documented switch; the practical approach is a community-documented workaround that runs a Show Desktop shortcut through Task Scheduler at logon. In both cases, the change affects what happens after sign-in, not the firmware or Windows boot loader.
First, identify whether you have Windows 8 or Windows 8.1
The two releases look similar but use different procedures. Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter. The dialog identifies the installed Windows release. Close it after noting whether it says Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

| Release | Documented way to reach the desktop | Where you configure it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 8 | Show Desktop .scf shortcut launched by a scheduled task |
Not a native sign-in option; configure the shortcut and Task Scheduler | The procedure comes from a 2012 Microsoft Q&A community answer and is a workaround, not a Microsoft-guaranteed Windows 8 boot setting. |
| Windows 8.1 | Built-in “go to the desktop instead of Start” sign-in option | Taskbar and Navigation properties > Navigation | Windows 8.1 Update may already boot to the desktop by default on non-tablet devices, while still allowing a desktop-or-Start choice. |
If your version dialog says 8.1, use the built-in method below. If it says only Windows 8, use the scheduled-shortcut workaround.

Windows 8.1: use the built-in desktop-at-sign-in setting
Windows 8.1 added the control Microsoft describes as allowing users to bypass the Start screen and log on directly to the desktop. It changes the sign-in destination without replacing the Start screen or changing the boot loader.

- Drivers Pack for Internet, Wireless, Lan Ethernet, Video Graphics, Audio Sound, USB 3.0, Motherboard, Webcams, Bluetooth, Chipset. It will scan your Windows and install the latest drivers. No Internet connection is required. Perfect to update drivers, installing new hard drive or installing a missing driver. Supports Windows 10, 7, 8, 8.1, Vista, & XP in 64 & 32 Bit. In 42 Languages
Turn on the setting
- Sign in to Windows 8.1.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and choose Properties. This opens Taskbar and Navigation properties.
- Open the Navigation tab.
- In the Start-screen section, select the option that sends you to the desktop instead of Start when you sign in. The wording is commonly shown as “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start.”
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Sign out and sign in again to verify the behavior. The setting is a sign-in preference, so restarting is not required to save it, although a new sign-in is needed to observe the result.
What this option does and does not do
- It directs your session to the desktop after authentication.
- It does not remove the Start screen, uninstall Modern/Windows Store apps, or change which shell Windows loads.
- You can still open Start with the Windows key or the lower-left Start control.
- It applies to the user account whose setting you changed; other accounts can retain their own Navigation choice.
Windows 8: create a Show Desktop shortcut and run it at logon
Original Windows 8 lacks the Windows 8.1 Navigation checkbox. A Microsoft Q&A community answer describes a workaround: create a Shell Command File (.scf) containing the Show Desktop command, then have Task Scheduler open that file whenever you log on. Because the trigger is At log on, this is a post-sign-in action rather than a true boot-to-desktop mode.
1. Create the Show Desktop file
- Open Notepad. From the Start screen, type
Notepadand open the desktop app. - Enter these four lines exactly, including the section names and capitalization:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=Explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
- Choose File > Save As.
- Give the file a name ending in
.scf, such asdesktop.scf. Ensure Notepad does not append.txt. If the Save As dialog has a file-type selector, choose All Files rather than a text-document type. - Save it in a location you will not accidentally delete, such as your Documents folder.
- Double-click the saved file. It should show the desktop by minimizing or hiding the open windows. If it does not, check the extension and compare every line with the code block before creating the scheduled task.
2. Create the logon task
- Open Task Scheduler. You can search for it from the Start screen, or open it through the Administrative Tools area of Control Panel.
- Choose the command to create a task rather than relying on a preconfigured Windows task.
- On the Triggers tab, create a new trigger and set it to At log on. Use the account scope that should receive the behavior; if you limit it to one account, other users will not be affected.
- On the Actions tab, create a new action. Browse to the
desktop.scffile you created and use that file as the action target, following the community answer’s procedure. - Review the task’s conditions. If the computer must perform the action while running on battery, clear the condition that restricts the task to AC power (often labeled Start the task only if the computer is on AC power).
- Save the task and approve any credential or confirmation prompt Windows displays.
- Sign out and sign in again. The task should launch the Show Desktop command after logon.
3. Test the task without restarting
In Task Scheduler, select the task and choose Run to test the action. This tests the action itself, not the logon trigger. Then sign out and back in to test the complete sequence. If a manual run works but sign-in does not, inspect the trigger and its account scope. If neither works, double-click the .scf file directly and correct that file before troubleshooting Task Scheduler.

Windows 8 workaround troubleshooting
The file is really desktop.scf.txt
Notepad can hide known extensions, making a file that appears to be desktop.scf actually a text file. In File Explorer, enable the display of file-name extensions and confirm that the final extension is exactly .scf. Rename it if necessary, then test it by double-clicking.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Double-clicking the file does nothing
- Open the file in Notepad and verify that it contains the
[Shell]and[Taskbar]sections,Command=2,IconFile=Explorer.exe,3, andCommand=ToggleDesktop. - Make sure the file was not saved as rich text or with extra formatting. It should be a plain-text file with the
.scfextension. - Save a corrected copy, test it directly, and update the scheduled action if you moved or renamed the file.
The task runs manually but not when signing in
- Confirm the trigger is At log on, not a one-time date or startup trigger.
- Check that the trigger applies to the account you are using.
- Check the Conditions tab and remove the AC-power restriction if the machine is on battery.
- Verify that the action still points to the current file path. Moving the shortcut after creating the task can leave the task pointing at a location that no longer exists.
The task works on AC power but not on battery
This is the specific condition called out in the community procedure. Edit the task, open Conditions, and clear the setting that requires AC power. Save the task and test again while unplugged.

I want to stop the automatic desktop display
For Windows 8, open Task Scheduler, locate the task you created, and choose Disable to pause it or Delete to remove it. You can keep the .scf file for manual use or delete it after removing the task. Disabling the task is the safer reversible test.
Windows 8.1 Update and device-specific defaults
Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 Update discussion says that the update boots to the desktop by default on non-tablet devices while allowing the user to choose between the desktop and Start. Treat that as an update- and device-specific default, not as a guarantee for every Windows 8.1 installation. A tablet, an earlier 8.1 build, or a changed user preference may present Start instead.

If an updated non-tablet PC already opens the desktop, no workaround is necessary. To make the preference explicit, use the Navigation-tab procedure above. If the machine still opens Start, check that the Navigation option is selected and test with a complete sign-out/sign-in cycle rather than merely closing an application.
What “boot straight to the desktop” means in Windows 8
Windows 8 terminology can be confusing because “boot” is often used to mean the entire startup experience. Neither procedure changes BIOS/UEFI settings, the Windows boot manager, or the operating-system shell. The Windows 8.1 checkbox changes the destination after authentication. The original Windows 8 workaround waits for the At log on event and then invokes the Show Desktop command. You may therefore still see the lock screen, sign-in screen, and normal Windows startup stages before the desktop appears.

- 13mm for ultra slim and light
- Mac/PC Support
- Includes USB 2. 0 and Type-C cables
- Nero BackItUp function for Android Devices
- DISC Encryption II for password-controls and hidden-file functionality
The workaround can also briefly expose the Start environment while the user session initializes, depending on timing and system load. Its documented purpose is to run Show Desktop after logon, not to suppress every startup screen.
Requirements and reversibility
- No additional software purchase is required for either method.
- Windows 8.1 users need access to the taskbar’s Navigation properties and can undo the change by clearing the desktop-at-sign-in option.
- Original Windows 8 users need permission to create a file and a scheduled task. The workaround is maintained as a normal Task Scheduler entry and can be disabled or deleted.
- Keep the shortcut in a permanent location. A scheduled action cannot run a file that has been renamed, moved, or deleted.
Because the Windows 8 procedure is from a community answer rather than a current Microsoft support article, behavior can vary between Windows 8 configurations. If it fails repeatedly, the reliable conclusion is that original Windows 8 has no documented native desktop-at-sign-in switch comparable to Windows 8.1; the scheduled shortcut remains a workaround rather than a guaranteed platform feature.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Use this method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Version dialog says Windows 8.1 | Navigation tab in Taskbar and Navigation properties | It is the built-in control designed to bypass Start at sign-in. |
| Version dialog says Windows 8 | Show Desktop .scf plus an At log on scheduled task |
Original Windows 8 does not document the 8.1 checkbox; this is the cited workaround. |
| Windows 8.1 Update on a non-tablet already opens the desktop | Leave the default or verify the Navigation choice | The update may set desktop as the default for that device category. |
| Task works only while plugged in | Clear the AC-power condition | Task Scheduler can block the logon action on battery when that condition is enabled. |
