How to Boot a Steam Deck from a Ventoy USB Drive

Install Ventoy on a USB drive, copy your supported boot image to Ventoy’s main partition, connect the drive to the Steam Deck, then open Boot Manager and select EFI USB Device. Valve gives that exact menu entry for USB recovery media. The label can vary with firmware and the connected hardware, but the USB device is selected from the Deck’s Boot Manager.

Ventoy’s installation reformats the selected drive, so back up its contents and verify the target disk before confirming. A USB-C drive can connect directly; a USB-A drive needs a suitable USB-C adapter or hub.

What you need before starting

  • A Steam Deck with enough battery or access to a charger.
  • A USB flash drive or external USB storage device that you can erase completely. Its existing contents will be destroyed when Ventoy is installed.
  • A supported boot image from the operating-system, recovery-environment or utility publisher you intend to start.
  • A USB-C connection. Use a USB-C drive directly, or use a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter or hub for a USB-A drive.
  • A separate computer on which you can install Ventoy and copy the boot image to the USB drive.
  • A backup of anything currently stored on the USB drive.

Ventoy’s official setup documentation is at Get start. Valve’s recovery procedure, including the Steam Deck Boot Manager entry, is documented in SteamOS Installation and Repair.

How Ventoy changes the USB drive

Ventoy is installed onto the USB device itself. It is not merely a file that you copy beside other files. During installation, Ventoy formats the selected disk and removes the data already on it. The most important safety step is therefore selecting the correct physical drive before confirming the installation.

After installation, the drive has a main partition for your boot images and a separate EFI partition used by the boot system. You copy the supported image file to the main partition. Ventoy searches that partition, including its directories, and builds a boot menu from the images it finds; you do not normally need to rewrite or repartition the drive for each new image. The partition arrangement is described in Ventoy’s disk layout documentation.

Why this matters for a Steam Deck

The Deck does not boot “Ventoy” because the application is on the drive in the same way a desktop application is installed. The Deck’s firmware first starts the USB device. Ventoy then displays its own menu, where you choose one of the boot images stored on the main partition. Keeping those two stages separate makes troubleshooting easier: a missing USB device is a firmware or connection problem, while a missing image is usually a file-placement or image-support problem.

Prepare the Ventoy USB drive

  1. Back up the USB drive. Copy every file you need to another location. Treat the Ventoy installation as destructive to the selected disk.
  2. Download the current Ventoy release and follow its official installation method. Ventoy provides installers for supported operating systems through its Get start instructions. Use the installer appropriate to the computer you are using.
  3. Identify the target USB device. Compare its capacity and connection with the disk shown by the Ventoy installer. Do not rely only on a drive letter; removable disks can be assigned different letters or mount points.
  4. Select the USB device in Ventoy. Recheck the model and capacity before proceeding. If more than one removable disk is connected, disconnect any disk that must not be erased.
  5. Confirm the format warning. Ventoy warns that installation formats the selected drive and all data on it will be lost. Continue only after you have verified the target.
  6. Wait for installation to finish. Do not unplug the drive while Ventoy is creating its partitions. When the process completes, the main data partition should be available for files.
  7. Copy the boot image to the main partition. Place the image file on the partition intended for image storage. You can put it at the top level or inside a directory; Ventoy scans directories on that partition and lists supported files in its menu.
  8. Eject the drive cleanly. Use the operating system’s eject or safely-remove function before disconnecting it from the preparation computer.

Use the image publisher’s instructions to obtain an appropriate file and to check whether that image’s boot method is supported. Do not assume that every disk image, installer, diagnostic environment or recovery file will boot through Ventoy simply because it can be copied to the drive.

Choose the right USB connection

The connection accessory depends on the connector on the drive and on whether you need to keep the Deck powered while booting. The accessory is not itself a boot requirement.

Drive connector Deck connection When it is useful Important limitation
USB-C Connect directly to the Deck’s USB-C port Simplest setup with no adapter Leaves the single USB-C port occupied unless another arrangement is used
USB-A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter Small, direct connection for one USB-A drive The adapter must support data, not charging only
USB-A or several peripherals USB-C hub Useful when the drive and other USB devices must be connected together An unpowered hub can be less reliable with multiple or power-hungry devices
Any supported USB drive Hub with USB Power Delivery passthrough Useful when you want to charge the Deck while a boot drive is attached, especially in a docked setup Power Delivery passthrough improves charging flexibility; it does not guarantee that a particular drive or image will boot

Valve discusses hubs, USB peripherals and Power Delivery passthrough in Docking the Steam Deck. That guidance supports the general use of hubs and powered connections, not any particular hub model.

Boot the Steam Deck from the prepared drive

  1. Finish copying the image and safely eject the drive from the preparation computer.
  2. Connect the drive to the Deck. Plug a USB-C drive directly into the Deck, or connect a USB-A drive through a suitable data adapter or hub. If you are using a hub, connect the hub firmly and provide external power when your setup supports it.
  3. Open the Deck’s Boot Manager. Use the Deck’s firmware startup controls to enter Boot Manager. Button timing and the appearance of firmware screens can change with device state, so follow Valve’s current recovery instructions if you need the exact startup sequence.
  4. Choose the USB entry. Valve’s SteamOS recovery instructions say: “On a Steam Deck, navigate to Boot Manager, boot from the ‘EFI USB Device’ (your USB key).” Select that entry when it represents the connected Ventoy drive.
  5. Wait for Ventoy’s menu. The firmware should hand control to the USB device. Ventoy then displays the supported image files it found on the main partition.
  6. Select the image you want to run. Highlight the required file in Ventoy’s menu and start it. From this point, the behavior belongs to the selected image: an installer, recovery environment or utility may show its own menus and hardware requirements.

The exact text shown in Boot Manager can depend on the connected device, adapter or hub, and firmware state. Do not assume every Deck will show identical wording. The documented target is the USB device entry identified as EFI USB Device, not a generic promise that every USB drive will be named the same way.

Secure Boot: when Ventoy stops before its menu

Secure Boot can affect whether the Deck’s firmware accepts the Ventoy bootloader. Ventoy documents a Secure Boot support option that can be enabled during installation, followed by a first-boot key-enrollment process on systems that request it. Ventoy also documents limitations and machines on which that approach may not work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you enabled Secure Boot support during installation

  1. Install Ventoy using the current release instructions and enable its Secure Boot support option when the installer offers it.
  2. Connect the finished drive to the Deck and select it from Boot Manager.
  3. If the firmware displays a key-enrollment screen, read the prompts carefully and approve enrollment only if you intend to trust the Ventoy signing key.
  4. Allow the system to restart or continue into Ventoy as directed by the firmware.

The enrollment screens and wording are firmware-dependent. Ventoy’s Secure Boot documentation describes the supported flow and known failure cases. Follow the instructions for the exact Ventoy release you installed rather than treating one enrollment sequence as universal.

If Secure Boot still blocks the drive

A failure before the Ventoy menu points to the firmware/security stage, not necessarily to the image copied onto the drive. Check whether the Deck detects the USB device, review the Secure Boot settings and enrollment result, and consult the current Ventoy Secure Boot guidance. If the firmware or hardware combination is not supported by Ventoy’s Secure Boot method, you may need to use the firmware configuration that permits the drive to boot, provided that choice is appropriate for your security requirements.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The USB drive does not appear in Boot Manager

  • Confirm that the drive is connected to a data-capable USB-C adapter or hub if it uses USB-A.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the adapter or hub, then reopen Boot Manager.
  • If you are using a hub, try the drive through a direct adapter or a different USB-C connection. This isolates hub power or compatibility issues.
  • Check whether the preparation computer can still see the Ventoy partitions. If the drive is not detected there either, the installation may not have completed or the drive may have a hardware problem.
  • Make sure you are looking for the USB device entry, commonly shown by Valve as EFI USB Device, rather than expecting the image filename itself to appear in firmware.
  • Remove other bootable USB devices temporarily so that the menu is easier to interpret.

Boot Manager sees the drive, but Ventoy does not start

  • Recheck the selection in Boot Manager and choose the USB entry again.
  • Review Secure Boot status and any key-enrollment prompt. A rejection at this stage happens before Ventoy can display its menu.
  • Try the current Ventoy Secure Boot procedure for your installed release. Ventoy’s documented limitations mean that changing a setting blindly may not resolve every hardware or firmware combination.
  • Confirm that the drive was ejected cleanly after installation and copying. If the preparation computer was still writing files, repeat the copy and safely remove the drive.

Ventoy opens, but the image is missing from its menu

  • Verify that the image is on Ventoy’s main data partition, not on an inaccessible EFI partition.
  • Check the filename and extension against the image publisher’s instructions.
  • Look inside the directories on the main partition; Ventoy searches directories as well as the top level.
  • Confirm that the file is a supported image type for the Ventoy release you installed.
  • If the file was copied while the drive was nearly full, recopy it after checking available space and safely eject the drive.

The image appears, but selecting it fails

At this point, the USB preparation may be working correctly. Compatibility can depend on the image’s boot method, its own hardware assumptions and the Deck’s firmware. Check the image publisher’s boot instructions and Ventoy’s compatibility notes. The available documentation does not certify every operating-system or recovery image for every Steam Deck firmware version, so a failure from one image should not be treated as proof that Ventoy itself was installed incorrectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Deck boots SteamOS instead of the USB

  • Connect the drive before opening Boot Manager.
  • Enter Boot Manager again and explicitly select the USB entry rather than allowing the internal storage to remain the default.
  • If the USB entry is absent, return to the connection checks above. If it is present but immediately rejected, investigate Secure Boot and the Ventoy boot stage.

The Deck loses power or the hub disconnects

A USB-C hub can share the Deck’s port among a boot drive, charger and other peripherals, but an unpowered arrangement may be less stable when several devices are attached. For a long installer or recovery session, a hub with Power Delivery passthrough can let the Deck remain connected to a charger. This addresses power and port management; it does not make an unsupported image compatible.

Use the Ventoy drive for more than one image

One advantage of Ventoy is that the main partition can hold multiple supported boot images. After the initial installation, copy additional files into the same partition or into organized directories. When the Deck starts Ventoy, its menu can list the files it discovers. This avoids reinstalling Ventoy each time you replace an image.

Keep a clear folder structure and retain the original filenames supplied by image publishers unless their instructions say otherwise. Before relying on a newly added image, test that it appears in Ventoy’s menu and that you know which menu entry starts it. Removing an image is normally a file-management operation on the main partition; reinstalling Ventoy is not required merely to add or remove a supported image.

Updating or rebuilding the drive safely

Adding or replacing an image

  1. Connect the Ventoy drive to the preparation computer.
  2. Open the main data partition.
  3. Copy the new supported image or remove the obsolete one.
  4. Wait for the copy to complete, then eject the drive safely.
  5. Reconnect it to the Deck and select EFI USB Device in Boot Manager.

Reinstalling Ventoy

Reinstall Ventoy only when you need to change the Ventoy installation or recover from a damaged setup. Reinstallation formats the selected disk again and erases the images and other files stored there. Back them up first, verify the target disk, perform the installation, and copy the required images back to the newly created main partition.

Security and data precautions

  • Assume every Ventoy installation is destructive to the selected disk, even if that disk has been used successfully before.
  • Download boot images from their legitimate publisher and verify any checksums or signatures that publisher provides.
  • Do not enroll a Secure Boot key unless you understand what trust decision the firmware is asking you to make.
  • Keep a second copy of critical recovery media. A USB drive can be lost, corrupted or physically damaged.
  • Disconnect unrelated external disks during installation to reduce the chance of selecting the wrong device.
  • After booting a recovery or installer environment, follow that environment’s own warnings about partitions and data deletion. Starting it from Ventoy does not make its operations harmless.

Returning to normal Steam Deck startup

When you finish with the Ventoy environment, shut down or restart it using that environment’s normal controls, then remove the USB drive when the Deck is no longer using it. On the next startup, the Deck can use its internal storage normally. If the drive remains connected, open Boot Manager and select the internal-storage entry instead of the USB device.

Bottom line

The reliable sequence is: install Ventoy to a correctly identified USB drive, accept that installation will erase it, copy the supported boot image to Ventoy’s main partition, connect the drive through USB-C directly or with a data adapter, and choose EFI USB Device in the Steam Deck Boot Manager. If the process fails before Ventoy’s menu, investigate detection, connection and Secure Boot. If Ventoy’s menu appears but an image fails, investigate that image’s compatibility and boot method rather than automatically rebuilding the USB.
