Compare any offered itinerary with your needs before deciding whether to wait or take a refund. Book a replacement yourself only after weighing the risk that you may not be reimbursed; a new ticket is not automatically covered just because the original airline is grounded.
What should I do first if my airline is grounded?
- Confirm what has happened. Check whether your particular flight is formally cancelled, rather than relying only on an announcement that the airline has suspended operations or changed its schedule. Save your ticket, booking reference, payment record and any cancellation or schedule-change notice.
- Contact the airline operating the flight. Use its app, phone line, airport desk or written support channel. Give the representative your destination, the latest time you can arrive, passenger or accessibility needs, and whether nearby airports are workable. Ask the airline to check its own flights, partner flights and other carriers it can ticket. European Commission guidance advises passengers to make themselves known to the airline during a disruption (Your Europe: Air passenger rights).
- Contact the seller too if you booked through an agency. Ask the agency that issued the ticket to help with changes, while continuing to seek prompt assistance from the operating airline. Keep both parties’ responses.
- Ask for specific options in writing. Request flight numbers, dates, confirmed-seat status, connection details and any costs you would have to pay. A general statement that the airline will “rebook” you is not enough to compare options.
- Keep a time-stamped record. Save airline messages, screenshots showing available flights and fares, and notes of calls—including when you called, whom you reached, and what was offered or declined. Keep receipts for disruption-related expenses.
Will the airline put me on another airline?
It depends on the rules that apply to your journey and the airline’s available options. Do not assume that every grounded airline must place every passenger on any competitor’s flight, or that it will do so automatically. Ask directly whether it can ticket another carrier and request an answer about a particular itinerary.

For travel covered by EU Regulation 261/2004
For a covered cancellation, Article 8 provides a choice between reimbursement and rerouting. Rerouting may be at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions, or at a later date that suits you, subject to seat availability. The European Commission’s 2024 interpretative guidelines say that an operating carrier should deploy available resources to provide reasonable, satisfactory and timely rerouting, including considering direct or indirect flights operated by other airlines, whether or not they belong to the same alliance. That is a basis to ask the carrier to consider a competitor; it does not mean that every proposed flight must be offered regardless of circumstances. See the Commission’s 2024 interpretative guidelines and Article 8 of Regulation 261/2004.

For U.S.-covered flights
U.S. Department of Transportation rules secure a refund when a passenger whose flight is cancelled declines rebooking or other compensation offered instead of a refund. They do not generally require airlines to offer a replacement flight. Some airlines publish commitments to rebook passengers on partner or agreement airlines for controllable disruptions; check the airline-specific entry on the DOT Airline Customer Service Dashboard rather than treating another-carrier rebooking as a universal entitlement. The DOT explains refund rights on its refunds page.
How do I compare last-minute replacement flights?
Once you have concrete options, compare the whole journey rather than choosing only by departure time or fare. A cheap ticket can be a poor alternative if it arrives too late, uses an inaccessible airport or leaves no margin for a risky connection.

- Arrival time and connection risk: Compare the scheduled arrival, number of connections, layover length and whether a missed connection would leave you stranded again.
- Seat certainty: Confirm whether the seat is ticketed or the offer is standby, waitlisted or merely a reservation request.
- Airports and ground transport: Check the distance between airports, transfer time, service hours and ground-transport cost, including any transfer required by an alternative-airport reroute.
- Ticket and baggage details: Ask who will issue the replacement ticket, which airline will operate it, and whether baggage, accessibility arrangements and other needs are accounted for.
- Your out-of-pocket exposure: Add the fare and ground transport, and ask who has agreed in writing to pay each amount. Do not treat an airline’s willingness to discuss an option as authorization to buy it.
Can I book my own replacement flight and get reimbursed?
Do not count on reimbursement unless the airline has agreed to it or an applicable rule clearly supports your claim. The existence of a cancellation does not by itself establish that the airline will repay any fare you buy independently. The applicable remedy depends on the route, circumstances and governing rules.

If you must buy immediately because waiting would defeat the purpose of the trip, preserve evidence of why you acted: the airline’s offers or lack of response, your attempts to reach it, the flights and fares available at that moment, and the purchase and transport receipts. Keep the replacement itinerary and proof of payment. These records do not guarantee repayment, but they document what happened and what options you had.

Should I take a refund or wait for a rebooking?
Make the choice against your actual deadline and the terms that apply to your journey. On travel covered by EU Regulation 261/2004, reimbursement and rerouting are separate choices under Article 8; compare an offered reroute with the earliest viable alternative and the later-date option available subject to seats. For U.S.-covered flights, the DOT refund rule applies when you decline rebooking or compensation offered instead of a refund. If you accept and travel on a rebooked alternative, you generally do not receive a refund under that rule.
Before accepting or declining, ask what the choice means for your ticket and any offered itinerary, and get the answer in writing. In the EU, compensation for a cancellation is a separate question from refund, rerouting and care: extraordinary circumstances may remove compensation entitlement while assistance and care rights may still apply. See the European Commission’s air passenger rights FAQs.
What if the airline has stopped operating or is insolvent?
A temporary grounding, widespread cancellations and formal insolvency are different situations. Do not assume that an operational suspension means the airline is bankrupt, or that insolvency automatically makes every ticket worthless. The European Commission identifies insolvency as a passenger-protection issue, but the applicable protections depend on the route and rules in force. A 2026 Council position document discusses proposed relief for passengers stranded by airline insolvency; that document alone does not establish that the proposal is effective law. Check the rules actually in force for your route and travel date, using the Commission’s air passenger rights information as a starting point and the Council position document for the proposal’s status.
