How to Book a Berth on a Vande Bharat Sleeper Train (IRCTC Guide, 2026)

Book a Vande Bharat Sleeper berth through the official IRCTC e-ticket website or the IRCTC Rail Connect app. Search your exact origin, destination and travel date, confirm that a Vande Bharat Sleeper service is listed, then check the offered class, live availability and fare before entering passenger details and paying. You can request a berth preference such as lower berth, but IRCTC states that allotment depends on availability and is not guaranteed.

As of 13 October 2026, official records confirm one operating pair: Howrah–Kamakhya, train numbers 27575 and 27576. That does not mean it serves every station or that a berth is available for your journey, so use the live IRCTC result for the date you intend to travel.

What you are actually booking

A Vande Bharat Sleeper ticket is an online railway reservation for a specific train, boarding station, destination, journey date and sleeper class. “Booking a berth” does not mean choosing any bed in the coach independently. During the passenger-entry stage, IRCTC lets you enter a berth preference when the booking form offers that field; the railway then assigns an available berth under its allocation rules.

The inventory shown to you is journey-specific. A train may be listed for one pair of stations but not another on the same route, and the class, fare and remaining berths can change as passengers book or cancel. Treat the live availability shown after your search as the controlling information, rather than a timetable or fare mentioned elsewhere.

What you need before opening IRCTC

  • An IRCTC account. Individual registration is free, according to IRCTC’s e-ticket instructions.
  • The exact station from which you will board and the station where you will get down. If a city has multiple railway stations, select the station printed on your travel plan.
  • Your journey date. Availability and fare are calculated for that date, not merely for the route.
  • Passenger information for every traveller, including the name and other fields requested in the booking form.
  • A payment method that can complete the transaction through the options displayed by IRCTC.
  • Time to verify the train, both stations, date and class before payment. A wrong station or date can produce a valid ticket that does not meet your travel needs.

Use only the official website or the official Rail Connect app. Do not rely on screenshots, social-media posts or an old timetable to establish that a sleeper service is running on your date.

How to book on the IRCTC website

  1. Open the official booking site and sign in. Go to IRCTC’s Book E-Ticket service. Sign in with your registered credentials, or complete the free individual registration if you do not have an account.
  2. Enter the journey search. Select the origin station, destination station and journey date. Submit the search using the site’s train-search control.
  3. Read the results, not just the train name. Locate a Vande Bharat Sleeper listing, then inspect its route and departure and arrival times. Confirm that the train actually calls at your selected stations.
  4. Check class, fare and availability. Expand the relevant train and date to see the sleeper class offered, the current fare and the availability status. The displayed result is specific to your station pair and date.
  5. Select the available class and booking action. Choose the Vande Bharat Sleeper class shown for that service and use the booking button provided by IRCTC. Exact class labels and inventory can vary by train and date.
  6. Add every passenger. Enter each traveller’s details exactly as requested. If a berth-preference menu appears, select the preference you want, such as lower, middle or upper berth, subject to the options displayed.
  7. Inspect the reservation page. Before proceeding to payment, check the train name or number, boarding station, destination, journey date and class. Also check passenger names and the fare total. This is the last practical point to catch a wrong search selection.
  8. Pay through the displayed option. Choose an available payment method and finish the transaction without refreshing or closing the session during processing.
  9. Save the confirmation. After successful payment, retain the confirmation, ticket details and PNR. Keep the same information accessible on your phone or in another secure form for later status checks.

A berth preference is a request, not a promise. If the requested berth is unavailable, the system may allocate another berth according to availability. Do not pay on the assumption that selecting “lower” guarantees a lower berth.

How to book in the IRCTC Rail Connect app

The official IRCTC Rail Connect app provides train search, availability checks, payments, PNR enquiry and management of tickets booked through the app or website. App labels can change as IRCTC updates the software, but the booking logic remains the same.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install or open IRCTC Rail Connect, then sign in or register an IRCTC account.
  2. Open train search and enter the origin, destination and journey date.
  3. Review the results for a Vande Bharat Sleeper service, including the route, timings and the station pair you entered.
  4. Open the class and availability details. Confirm the fare shown for that specific date and journey.
  5. Tap the booking control for the offered sleeper class.
  6. Enter all passenger details and choose a berth preference if the form provides one.
  7. Review the train, stations, date, class, passengers and total fare on the confirmation screen.
  8. Complete payment, then use the app’s ticket-management or PNR features to retain and check the booking.

The app and website are both IRCTC channels. The fact that one interface is more convenient on a particular device does not establish better berth availability in either channel; inventory is tied to the railway booking system and your selected journey.

How to check Vande Bharat Sleeper availability and fare

Availability is not a single route-wide number. It is calculated for the exact combination of boarding station, destination, date and class. To check it reliably:

  1. Search with the stations where you will actually board and leave the train.
  2. Set the intended travel date rather than an approximate date.
  3. Open the Vande Bharat Sleeper result and select the sleeper class offered.
  4. Read the status and fare shown for that class. If the class is not listed, IRCTC is not offering that inventory for the selected search at that moment.
  5. Repeat the search only when you are checking a different date or station pair; do not interpret a result for one journey as proof of availability for another.

Availability can change while you are completing a booking. A result visible at the start of the process is not a guarantee that the same berth remains available when payment is submitted.

Can you choose a lower berth?

You can enter a lower-berth preference when the booking form presents that option, along with any other preferences the form allows. IRCTC explicitly says berth allotment depends on availability. The request therefore improves the system’s information about your preference but does not reserve a particular berth number.

What to do if the preference is not honoured

  • Check the final ticket’s coach and berth assignment after booking.
  • If the allocated berth is unsuitable, do not assume that cancelling and rebooking will produce a lower berth; availability may worsen or disappear.
  • For accessibility or medical needs, review the passenger and concession fields offered by IRCTC and the applicable railway rules before payment. Enter only information that is accurate and supported by the relevant rules.

Website versus Rail Connect app

Both channels use IRCTC’s booking system. Choose based on how you prefer to work, not on an unsupported assumption that either channel has priority for berths.

Consideration IRCTC e-ticket website IRCTC Rail Connect app
Access Browser-based booking through the official IRCTC e-ticket service. Mobile booking through the official Rail Connect application.
Search and availability Search trains and inspect class, fare and availability for the selected journey. Train search and availability checks are listed app functions.

After booking Retain the confirmation and PNR from the completed booking. PNR enquiry and management of tickets booked through the app or website are listed features.
Berth availability No evidence establishes that either channel offers better berth availability; the result depends on the selected train, stations, date, class and remaining inventory.

Which Vande Bharat Sleeper service is operating?

Official information available on 13 October 2026 identifies Howrah–Kamakhya as the first operating Vande Bharat Sleeper service, with train numbers 27575 and 27576. The Ministry of Railways reported that booking for this first service opened on 19 January 2026. Its first commercial journeys were scheduled from Kamakhya on 22 January 2026 and from Howrah on 23 January 2026; a later parliamentary answer records regular operation beginning on 22 January 2026 and one pair operational as of 22 March 2026.

Those dates describe the launch and historical operating status, not a promise about the timetable on your travel date. The launch announcement is available from the Press Information Bureau, and the later parliamentary record is in this Rajya Sabha answer. For a current journey, search the live IRCTC results and verify the stations and times shown there.

Booking after chart preparation: current booking

IRCTC describes “current booking” as booking confirmed tickets against vacant accommodation after chart preparation, subject to the applicable railway booking time limit. The existence of this facility does not establish that a berth will be vacant for a particular departure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are trying after chart preparation, read the current status and booking controls shown by IRCTC rather than assuming that a sold-out result will become bookable. The official Current Booking page explains the facility. A successful current booking still requires you to verify the train, stations, date and class before paying.

Cancellation and refund rules to check before paying

IRCTC’s published Vande Bharat Sleeper cancellation rules specify different charges according to how far in advance you cancel. The figures below are the published policy, but railway rules and ticket conditions can change; recheck the current rule linked in the ticket flow before relying on a deadline.

When cancellation is made before departure Published charge or outcome
More than 72 hours Cancellation charge of 25% of the fare.
Between 72 and 8 hours Cancellation charge of 50% of the fare.
Less than 8 hours No refund under the published Vande Bharat Sleeper rule.
Ticket not cancelled and no online TDR filed by 8 hours before departure Not eligible for a refund under the published rule.

Read the complete IRCTC refund and cancellation rules and the conditions attached to your ticket. A percentage stated in a general rule should not be treated as a guaranteed cash amount until you see the fare breakdown and applicable deductions for your booking.

Common booking problems and practical fixes

The train does not appear

Check that the origin and destination are the actual stations served, that the date is correct and that you are looking for the sleeper class rather than another Vande Bharat service. If no listing appears after those checks, IRCTC has not shown a bookable service for that search at that moment. Do not substitute an unofficial schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The class is shown but no berth is available

A class listing can remain visible even when its current inventory is unavailable. Read the exact availability status and try another date only if your travel plans allow it. A different station pair on the same train can also produce different availability.

Payment succeeds but the confirmation is unclear

Do not immediately submit another payment. First check the app or website’s booked-ticket area and use the PNR enquiry function. Retain any transaction reference and contact the official IRCTC support route if the booking status remains unresolved.

The session times out during booking

Sign in again, repeat the search and verify whether a ticket was created before attempting payment a second time. The authoritative evidence is the booked-ticket record or PNR, not an expired browser screen.

Your preferred berth is not assigned

This is consistent with IRCTC’s availability condition. Check the assigned berth on the ticket and decide whether to travel with it or use the applicable cancellation process. Rebooking is not guaranteed to improve the berth and may expose you to a higher charge or no inventory.

Rules and account terms worth reading

Online bookings are subject to IRCTC’s rules governing internet ticket booking. Read those terms along with the fare, refund and cancellation conditions displayed for your transaction. They govern account use, payment processing, ticket handling and other conditions that a short booking tutorial cannot replace.

Final verification checklist

  • The train number and name are the Vande Bharat Sleeper service you intended to use.
  • Your boarding and destination stations are correct and are served by that train.
  • The journey date matches your travel plan.
  • The selected class is the sleeper class displayed for that train and date.
  • Passenger names and required details are accurate.
  • Your berth preference is recorded if the form accepted one, while understanding that allocation depends on availability.
  • The fare and any displayed charges are acceptable.
  • You have saved the confirmation and PNR after payment.

Following this sequence gives you the most reliable way to book: use live IRCTC data for the precise journey, request a preference only as a request, and verify every ticket field before you pay.
