Use macOS’s built-in screen saver to cover the desktop after an idle period, then configure Lock Screen settings so returning to the Mac requires a password. For an immediate response, choose Apple menu > Lock Screen or assign the screen saver to a Hot Corner. A screen saver alone is visual concealment, not access control: keyboard, mouse, or trackpad input can dismiss it unless password protection is enabled.
Choose the right way to protect the screen
“Hide my screen” can mean several different things. The best setting depends on whether you want an unattended Mac to cover the desktop, lock immediately when you leave, end your session entirely, or prevent people beside you from reading the display while you are still working.

| Option | Trigger | Result | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen saver | Idle interval you choose | Replaces the desktop with the selected screen saver | It is not automatically a password gate; input can dismiss it unless Lock Screen authentication is configured. |
| Apple menu > Lock Screen | Manual and immediate | Shows the Lock Screen as soon as you leave | You must remember to invoke it, and locking does not stop someone from shutting down or restarting the Mac. |
| Hot Corner | Pointer reaches a configured screen corner | Starts the screen saver without opening a menu | It requires deliberate setup and pointer movement. |
| Automatic logout | Inactivity period you configure | Ends the user session | Open applications and unsaved work are affected, making this substantially more disruptive than hiding or locking. |
| Physical privacy filter | Continuous while attached | Reduces side-angle visibility | It does not hide an unattended display or authenticate anyone, and fit is specific to the Mac model. |
How automatic screen hiding works in macOS
The screen saver is the least disruptive automatic option. macOS waits for the idle interval you select, then displays the chosen animation or image instead of the desktop. Apple describes this as a way to hide the desktop when you are away or want additional privacy.

A screen saver can stop when someone presses a key, moves the mouse, or touches the trackpad. If your concern is access to email, documents, or an unlocked account, configure the password requirement in Lock Screen settings as well.

The screen saver is also separate from display sleep. Apple notes that the screen saver starts after the selected idle period unless the display turns off first. Display-off timing is controlled in Lock Screen settings, with separate values for battery operation and a power adapter. Consequently, a Mac may go dark before you ever see the screen saver; that is normal behavior rather than a failed screen-saver setting.
Set the screen saver to start automatically
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu or Dock.
- Select Wallpaper in the sidebar.
- Open Screen Saver.
- Choose the screen saver appearance you want.
- Set Start Screen Saver to the idle interval that fits your routine.
Menu wording and the available interval choices can vary between macOS releases. Use the labels shown on your installed version rather than looking for an identically arranged window from an older guide.
Pick an interval based on the situation
- Shared office or public workspace: choose a short interval so the desktop is covered quickly if a conversation or meeting pulls you away.
- Home desk: a longer interval may avoid constant activation while you are reading, but it leaves the desktop visible for longer after you walk away.
- Temporary absence: do not depend on waiting for the timer. Use Lock Screen or a Hot Corner before you leave.
The interval only determines when the screen saver begins. It does not, by itself, determine when a password is required or when the display powers off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the screen saver appears not to work
- Check whether the display-off timer is shorter than the screen-saver start interval. The display may turn off first, preventing the screen saver from being visible.
- Confirm that you changed Start Screen Saver under Wallpaper > Screen Saver, rather than changing only the wallpaper.
- Move the pointer away and stop typing while testing; any activity resets the idle countdown.
- Remember that touching the trackpad, moving the mouse, or pressing a key exits the screen saver. That behavior is expected and does not indicate that the timer failed.
Hide or lock the Mac immediately
Use the Lock Screen menu command
When you are leaving now, choose Apple menu > Lock Screen. This is the most direct built-in action because it does not wait for the idle timer. The Mac presents the Lock Screen immediately, so the desktop is no longer exposed to a passer-by.

Locking protects the session from ordinary access, but it does not make the Mac impossible to power off. Apple cautions that another person can still turn the computer off or restart it. Save important work before stepping away, especially when applications do not save changes automatically.
Assign a Hot Corner
- Open System Settings.
- Select Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll to and open Hot Corners.
- Choose one of the four corners.
- Assign the screen saver action, then confirm the selection.
To use it, move the pointer into that corner. macOS starts the screen saver immediately, giving you a pointer-based alternative to the Apple menu. Select a corner that you do not routinely hit by accident; otherwise the screen may activate while you are working.
Require a password when the screen is uncovered
- Open System Settings.
- Select Lock Screen.
- Find Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off.
- Choose the shortest delay that still suits your workflow, or another interval offered by your macOS release.
This setting controls the authentication delay after either event named in its label: the screen saver starting or the display turning off. It is independent of the time chosen for Start Screen Saver. For a laptop left in a public place, a short password delay limits the period during which someone can wake the display and see the session without authenticating. The exact choices shown depend on the installed macOS version.
If you use a screen saver only for visual privacy and want to resume instantly at your desk, a longer delay may be more convenient. That convenience also leaves a longer window in which input can return to the session without a password, so choose deliberately rather than treating the delay as a cosmetic preference.

Coordinate screen saver, display sleep, and password timing
Three timers can affect what you see when you walk away:
- Start Screen Saver: begins the selected screen saver after inactivity.
- Display-off timing: turns the display off after inactivity; Lock Screen settings expose separate choices for battery and power-adapter use.
- Password delay: controls when macOS demands authentication after the screen saver begins or the display is turned off.
For a predictable result, decide first how quickly you want the desktop covered, then check whether the display will turn off sooner. Finally, set the password delay to match the sensitivity of the session. For example, a screen saver set to begin after a short idle period can conceal the desktop while a longer display-off interval keeps the screen saver visible; a very short display-off interval can make the Mac appear to skip the screen saver because the panel goes dark first.
Battery and power-adapter behavior do not have to match. A laptop can use an aggressive display-off and password policy on battery while allowing a longer interval at a desk connected to power. Review both values in System Settings > Lock Screen instead of assuming one setting covers every power state.

Use automatic logout only when ending the session is acceptable
- Open System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Open Advanced.
- Enable Log out automatically after inactivity and choose the logout duration.
Automatic logout is not simply a stronger screen saver. It terminates the user session, closes the logged-in state, and can interrupt open applications. Save work and consider unsaved documents, long-running tasks, and applications that do not restore their state before enabling it. Use this option when ending the session after a period of inactivity is an intentional policy, not merely because you want the desktop hidden.

Screen saver versus lock: what each protects
When visual concealment is enough
A screen saver is useful when the immediate concern is that a colleague, visitor, or passer-by should not see the desktop contents. It starts on its own and leaves your session running. It is appropriate for a shared room when you also understand that ordinary input can dismiss it unless password protection has been configured.
When authentication matters
Use Lock Screen or configure the password requirement when the Mac contains private files, messages, credentials, or active accounts. The authentication setting is what separates a decorative idle screen from a meaningful barrier to session access.
When the session must not remain open
Choose automatic logout only if closing the session is worth the disruption. It is the relevant control for a policy that requires a user to sign in again after inactivity, not for a quick trip away from the desk.

Software settings address an unattended or idle Mac. They do not stop someone sitting beside you from reading the display while you are actively using it. A fitted physical privacy filter narrows the useful viewing angle, so it addresses shoulder-surfing rather than unattended access.

One cited example, 3M model BPNAP007, is specified for a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M2–M4 chip range and a 16:10 display. The manufacturer describes a “60-degree black out,” meaning side views outside the stated 60-degree viewing angle are intended to be blocked. That is a manufacturer product claim, not an independent test result.
- Confirm the exact MacBook model, screen size, aspect ratio, and attachment method before buying.
- Do not assume a filter made for one 15-inch MacBook Air fits another MacBook generation or a different display ratio.
- A filter remains useful while you are working, but it does not start a screen saver, lock the Mac, or request a password when you leave.
Practical setups for common situations
Leaving a desk for a few minutes
- Choose Apple menu > Lock Screen.
- Verify that Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off is set to an interval appropriate for the information on the Mac.
- Save documents if the work is important or applications are not configured to save automatically.
This routine does not depend on the screen-saver timer and is preferable when the absence begins immediately.
Working in an open office or café
- Set a short Start Screen Saver interval under Wallpaper > Screen Saver.
- Set a short password delay under Lock Screen.
- Use a Hot Corner or the Lock Screen menu whenever you walk away before the timer expires.
- Consider a model-specific physical privacy filter if people can view the Mac from the side while you are typing.
The software controls handle unattended access; the filter addresses side viewing during active use. Neither replaces the other.
Using a MacBook on battery
- Review the battery-specific display-off choice in System Settings > Lock Screen.
- Set the screen-saver interval so the desktop is covered before the display-off event if seeing the screen saver is important to you.
- Choose a password delay that reflects the risk of leaving the laptop unattended.
Repeat the review for the power-adapter setting if your desk configuration should behave differently.
Managing a shared or unattended workstation
- Enable the screen saver for routine visual concealment.
- Require a password after the screen saver or display-off event.
- Use automatic logout only if your workplace or household policy requires the session to end.
- Tell users to save work before leaving, since locking does not protect against a forced shutdown or restart.
Troubleshooting checklist
The desktop remains visible longer than expected
- Check the selected idle value under Wallpaper > Screen Saver.
- Make sure the Mac is genuinely idle; pointer movement and keyboard or trackpad input reset the countdown.
- Check whether a display-off value is interacting with the screen-saver interval. A display that powers down first will not show the screen saver.
The screen saver appears, but no password is requested
- Open System Settings > Lock Screen.
- Inspect Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off.
- Choose a shorter delay if you need authentication as soon as the Mac is disturbed.
- Remember that the password setting and the screen-saver interval are separate controls.
The screen saver disappears as soon as someone touches the Mac
That is normal macOS behavior. A key press, mouse movement, or trackpad touch can stop the screen saver. If that person should not reach the session, rely on the Lock Screen command or configure the password requirement rather than treating the animation itself as a lock.
A Hot Corner activates accidentally
Return to System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Hot Corners and assign a different corner or remove the action. Choose a corner that the pointer does not routinely cross during ordinary work.
You are considering automatic logout to solve a visibility problem
Confirm that ending the session is actually required. If the goal is only to cover the desktop, use a screen saver. If the goal is to block access while preserving the session, use Lock Screen and the password-delay setting. Automatic logout belongs to policies that intentionally terminate the login session.
Quick Recap
A reliable leave-your-Mac checklist
- For an immediate departure, use Apple menu > Lock Screen or your configured Hot Corner.
- For unattended periods, set Wallpaper > Screen Saver to an appropriate idle interval.
- In Lock Screen, configure Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off.
- Check battery and power-adapter display-off choices separately.
- Save work before leaving, particularly in applications that do not save automatically.
- Use automatic logout only when ending the session is acceptable.
- Use a model-specific privacy filter for side viewing while you are still at the Mac; do not treat it as a lock.
