The only supported way to remove ads from the YouTube app on an LG webOS TV is a YouTube Premium subscription. Sign in to the YouTube app on the TV with the Premium account. DNS filtering won’t reliably do it. A community-made YouTube client for webOS claims to block ads, but it replaces the official app and is unofficial.
Why there is no “adblock extension” for LG TVs
People often ask whether the TV can get something like a Chrome ad-blocking extension. An LG webOS forum poster asked exactly that. The answer in that (older) community thread was that normal browser extensions aren’t supported in webOS’s controlled app environment. It is community discussion, not an official LG statement. The YouTube app on your TV is a standalone app, not a web page you can add extensions to.

Option 1: YouTube Premium (the supported fix)
YouTube states that Premium benefits are available on a smart TV or streaming device where you’re signed in to the YouTube app. In practice:

- Open the YouTube app on the LG TV.
- Sign in with that same account (or switch to it from the account picker).
- Play a video. Ads served by YouTube should no longer appear for that signed-in profile.
If ads still show, the usual cause is that the TV is on a different profile or a signed-out session. Check which account is active in the app.

Option 2: DNS filtering, and why it falls short
DNS filtering works at the domain level: the network refuses to resolve addresses known for ads or trackers. AdGuard’s own guidance on blocking YouTube ads says DNS filtering cannot reliably remove in-video ads in the official smart-TV app, because those ads come from the same infrastructure as the video itself.
It is still worth considering for a different goal: reducing third-party ads and telemetry across the TV and other devices. You can set a filtering DNS server on your router so every device benefits, or on the TV’s own network settings. AdGuard Home is open-source software for running a network-wide filter yourself. Treat it as a partial privacy measure, not a YouTube ad solution. If an app or service stops working after you enable it, loosen the blocklists or allow-list the affected domain.

Option 3: An unofficial ad-free YouTube app
The webOS Homebrew Project documents a YouTube app for webOS without ads. Before you try it, know the trade-offs:

- Its documentation says the official YouTube app must be uninstalled first.
- It isn’t made or supported by Google or LG, so it can stop working when YouTube or webOS changes.
- Installing it generally means putting the TV into a developer or homebrew setup, which varies by model and webOS version. Follow the project’s own instructions for your TV.
- You lose the official app’s Premium integration and support.
Choosing quickly
- You want zero YouTube playback ads with no tinkering: YouTube Premium.
- You want fewer trackers and third-party ads network-wide: DNS filtering, with realistic expectations.
- You’re comfortable with unofficial software and don’t mind it breaking: the homebrew client.
No physical gadget is a proven, reliable fix for native LG YouTube ads, so avoid products claiming otherwise. No source reviewed gives a success rate for any of these methods on LG TVs.
