You cannot create one switch that filters all three services. Configure each app separately: turn on Restricted Mode on YouTube, use Restricted Mode plus Family Pairing on TikTok, and use Instagram Teen Accounts, Sensitive Content Control, supervision and time limits for eligible teens. These tools reduce exposure to graphic violence and sexual material, but none guarantees that every item will be removed.
What these controls can—and cannot—do
YouTube, TikTok and Instagram moderate content differently, so a setting enabled in one app has no effect on the others. The platform controls are filters and account-management tools rather than complete blocking systems. They can remove some material from recommendations, search results or feeds, and they can limit particular features. They may still miss content, especially when a post is newly uploaded, described inaccurately or edited to evade detection.

- Configure every service separately. A YouTube setting does not protect a TikTok or Instagram account.
- Expect reduced exposure, not a guarantee. The services use automated signals, reports and policy reviews; no filter catches everything.
- Use a supervised account where available. Family Link, Family Pairing and Instagram supervision depend on age, account type and country.
- Check the current app menus. Names, eligibility rules and rollout timing can change with app versions and regions.
YouTube: turn on Restricted Mode
YouTube describes Restricted Mode as “an optional setting that you can use to help screen out potentially mature content that you or others using your devices may prefer not to view.” It is the platform’s main built-in filter for violent, sexual and otherwise mature material.

- Sign in to YouTube.
- Open your profile menu.
- Select Restricted Mode.
- Activate the setting.
Restricted Mode works at browser and device level. Repeat the procedure in every browser, on every device and for every profile where you want the filter. Turning it on in a desktop browser does not automatically enable it in a phone app, a smart-TV app or another browser profile.

Enforce it for an eligible child account
A parent using Google Family Link can enforce Restricted Mode for an eligible child account. Enforcement prevents the child from changing the setting themselves. The child’s account must meet Family Link’s age and supervision requirements, and the exact controls shown can vary by country and account configuration.
How YouTube decides what to screen
Restricted Mode is not the same as an age restriction. YouTube says the filter uses signals including a video’s title, description and other metadata, Community Guidelines reviews and age restrictions. A video that is not age-restricted can still be hidden by Restricted Mode, while a mature item can occasionally remain visible if the available signals do not identify it.
When Restricted Mode is active, YouTube can also hide comments. That can remove graphic or sexual discussion around an otherwise acceptable video, but it may also remove benign comments you would have preferred to keep.
If mature videos still appear
- Confirm that Restricted Mode is enabled in the specific browser, app, device and signed-in profile being used.
- Check for a second Google account or an unsigned browsing session.
- For a child, verify that Family Link enforcement is attached to the account actually watching YouTube.
- Use YouTube’s reporting controls for a video that violates Community Guidelines; Restricted Mode is a filter, not a replacement for reporting.
TikTok: use Restricted Mode and Family Pairing
TikTok says, “Restricted Mode on TikTok limits exposure to content that may not be comfortable for everyone, such as content that contains mature or complex themes.” It is the in-app setting to use when you want to reduce sexual, violent or otherwise mature recommendations.

Turn on Restricted Mode
- Open TikTok and tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu button.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Content preferences.
- Tap Restricted Mode.
- Follow the prompts to create or enter the passcode and enable the mode.
The passcode step is important on a shared device: it adds a barrier against casually switching the filter off. Keep the code private from the person whose viewing you are limiting, and store it somewhere secure so you can recover the setting if needed.
Manage a teen’s setting with Family Pairing
Parents or guardians can manage a teen’s Restricted Mode through TikTok’s Family Pairing feature. The parent and teen accounts are linked, after which the adult can manage supported safety settings from the parent account. Linking and available controls depend on the account relationship, age requirements and local rollout.
Feature trade-offs while Restricted Mode is on
TikTok documents that some features are unavailable in Restricted Mode, including the Following feed, LIVE and gifting on LIVE. This is a deliberate safety trade-off: the account has fewer ways to discover or watch live material, but the viewer also loses normal access to those features. Explain the change before enabling it for a teen so the missing tabs are not mistaken for an app fault.

- Check that Restricted Mode is enabled on the account being used, not only on a parent’s phone.
- Make sure the passcode has not been shared or reset.
- For a teen account, verify that Family Pairing still shows the accounts as linked.
- Report individual videos, accounts or LIVE sessions that break TikTok’s rules; the mode reduces exposure but cannot identify every prohibited post immediately.
Instagram: start with Teen Accounts
For an eligible teenager, Instagram Teen Accounts are the primary safety layer. Meta says Teen Accounts place teens in the strictest Sensitive Content Control setting. This reduces the chance that sensitive material is recommended and, in many cases, hides it even when shared by someone the teen follows. Meta’s examples include depictions of physical fights.

Teen Accounts are account-based, so the protections follow the teen’s Instagram login rather than a single phone. Eligibility, activation and the exact controls shown can vary by country, age and rollout status. Open the current in-app account and supervision screens to confirm what is available in your region.
What the strict Sensitive Content Control setting changes
The strict setting is designed to limit sensitive material in recommendations and other discovery surfaces. It can also hide qualifying posts from accounts the teen already follows, which is stronger than only changing Explore recommendations. The filter applies to content Instagram classifies as sensitive; it is not an absolute block on every violent or sexual image, video or message.
Add parental supervision
A parent can add Instagram supervision where the account and country support it. Supervision gives the adult visibility into supported safety settings and lets them help manage the teen’s experience without taking over the account. The teen and parent may need to accept an in-app invitation or link their accounts, and Instagram can impose age or relationship requirements.

Block Instagram during selected periods
Instagram’s Teen Account protections include the ability for parents to block Instagram during selected periods. Use the available supervision or time-management screen to define the hours when the app should be unavailable. This addresses late-night or school-time exposure as well as the content itself. Time blocking does not change what appears while the app is available, so keep the sensitive-content setting enabled.

When Instagram controls are missing
- Check whether the account qualifies for a Teen Account and whether the feature has rolled out in your country.
- Update Instagram, then revisit the account, privacy and supervision areas; labels can move as the app changes.
- Confirm that the parent and teen accounts are linked through Instagram’s own supervision flow.
- Use Instagram’s report, block and mute actions for an individual account or post that remains unsafe.

Set up all three services in a household
If a child or teen uses more than one platform, complete the following sequence for each account. Doing only one app leaves the others unchanged.
- List every login and device. Include personal phones, tablets, family computers, game consoles, smart TVs and alternate browser profiles.
- Configure YouTube first. Turn on Restricted Mode everywhere it is needed; use Family Link when the child account is eligible.
- Configure TikTok next. Enable Restricted Mode, set a private passcode and link Family Pairing for a supervised teen.
- Check Instagram eligibility. Confirm whether the account is a Teen Account, then keep Sensitive Content Control at its strictest setting and add supervision or time blocking where available.
- Test as the viewer. Sign in to the child’s account and inspect recommendations, search, comments and LIVE areas. A parent’s account can show different results.
- Explain the changes. Tell the young person why some feeds, comments or live features may disappear and how to report content that slips through.
- Review after updates. Recheck settings after an app update, a new device, an account-age change or a move to another country.
What you cannot block with one setting
There is no platform-native switch that simultaneously filters YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. Each company evaluates content with its own classifiers, age systems and account rules. A network-level filter may restrict entire services or domains, but it cannot reliably apply each platform’s mature-content policy inside feeds, recommendations, messages and live streams. For this reason, use the native controls first and treat any broader device or network filter as an additional layer rather than a substitute.
Common failure modes and fixes
The setting is on, but another person can switch it off
On YouTube, ordinary Restricted Mode is tied to the browser or device and is not automatically parental enforcement. Use Family Link for an eligible child account. On TikTok, protect Restricted Mode with a private passcode or manage it through Family Pairing. On Instagram, use the supported supervision relationship rather than relying on a setting the teen can freely change.

One device is protected and another is not
This is expected for YouTube because Restricted Mode works at browser and device level. Repeat the setup in every environment. TikTok and Instagram settings follow the account, but a different login can show different controls, so verify the active account before testing.
Violent or sexual material still appears
None of these systems promises perfect removal. Content can be misclassified, newly uploaded or shared through a feature with different rules. Report the specific item, block or mute the account when appropriate, and record which account and feature displayed it so you can check whether a supervision link or setting has failed.
A useful feature disappeared
On TikTok, Following, LIVE and gifting on LIVE are unavailable in Restricted Mode by design. On YouTube, comments may be hidden. These are expected consequences of the safety settings, not necessarily bugs. Decide whether the reduced functionality is an acceptable trade-off before changing the protection.
Questions to answer before enabling restrictions
- Which accounts does the young person actually use, and are any shared with adults?
- Does the child meet the age and country requirements for Family Link, Family Pairing or an Instagram Teen Account?
- Which devices and browsers need separate YouTube configuration?
- Is the household comfortable losing TikTok LIVE and the Following feed, or YouTube comments?
- Who will hold the TikTok passcode and review supervision settings after updates?
Practical expectations for parents and guardians
Explain that the filters are safety aids, not promises that a screen will be entirely free of violence or sexual material. Encourage the child to close a disturbing video, avoid interacting with it, and report it. Keep conversations age-appropriate and make clear that reporting an item is useful even when the app’s filter was already enabled.

Bottom line
To reduce violent and sexual content, enable YouTube Restricted Mode on every required browser and device, enforce it with Family Link when possible, turn on TikTok Restricted Mode with a private passcode and Family Pairing for a teen, and use Instagram’s Teen Account protections with the strictest Sensitive Content Control plus supervision and time blocking where available. These layers materially reduce exposure, but only account-by-account configuration, reporting and periodic checks address the limits of automated filtering.
