NPCI says an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. There is also no single recipient-side reversal process for an unexpected incoming credit. Your bank must investigate and provide the applicable procedure; a stranger’s instructions are not a safe substitute.

What to do in the first few minutes
- Stop interacting with the sender. Do not transfer the money onward, approve a collect request, scan a QR code or open a link supplied by an unknown person. A caller who claims to have sent money by mistake may be trying to make you send a separate payment.
- Preserve evidence before changing anything. Take screenshots of the transaction-success page and account statement. Record the transaction ID or UTR, date and time, amount, sender name or UPI ID shown by your app, bank name, phone numbers, chat messages and any email or SMS. Do not delete the conversation or call history.
- Contact your bank through an official channel. Use the number on the bank’s website, card, passbook or official app—not a number in a message. State that you received a suspicious incoming UPI credit and ask the bank to open a complaint, protect the account and explain how it wants the credit handled.
- Report suspected cyber fraud promptly. Call 1930. You can also use cybercrime.gov.in. Keep the acknowledgement or login ID issued during the call; the portal instructions say to use it to complete registration within 24 hours. Check the current portal instructions when you submit because procedures can change.
- Raise the transaction issue in your UPI app or through the bank. NPCI says transaction-status and UPI complaints can be raised through the participating bank’s UPI app. Fraudulent, unidentified and unauthorized transactions should be taken to your bank.
- Secure credentials and the phone. Never tell anyone your UPI PIN, one-time password or app passcode. If your phone or SIM is lost, contact the mobile operator to block the number and notify the bank so transactions cannot be initiated from that number.
Keep the money untouched while the bank reviews it. Do not attempt an informal refund, even if the sender appears convincing.

Can you block or cancel a UPI payment?
“Block UPI” can mean several different things: disabling outgoing UPI transactions, freezing or restricting an account, blocking a particular collect-request sender, or trying to stop a payment that has already been initiated. These are not the same control.

An initiated payment cannot be stopped
NPCI’s UPI FAQ gives a direct answer: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” A stop-payment request cannot undo a completed or in-progress UPI instruction from the recipient side. Report suspected unauthorized activity to the bank immediately instead of relying on a cancellation button.
There is no universal menu path to disable UPI
Indian banks and UPI apps expose different controls. One may offer a temporary UPI block, another may disable a virtual payment address, and another may require a service request or account restriction. The reviewed official guidance does not establish one universal instruction. Ask your bank specifically to:
- restrict or disable UPI transactions while it investigates;
- secure the account and linked mobile number;
- record a fraud or unauthorized-transaction complaint where appropriate; and
- explain whether and how the incoming credit should be returned through a bank-controlled process.
Ask for a complaint or service-request number and write down the date, time and channel of every report.
Blocking a person is narrower than blocking UPI
NPCI’s published BHIM features include blocking or marking a user who sends illicit collect requests. That control concerns the request experience in BHIM. It does not reverse a payment, freeze your bank account or block every UPI transaction from that person across all apps. If you use another app, its controls may differ.
What to tell the bank and what protection to request
The bank is the primary channel for account-level protection and transaction redress. RBI customer-protection guidance requires banks to provide 24×7 channels for reporting unauthorized electronic transactions. After a customer reports an unauthorized transaction, banks must take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorized transactions in the account.
An unexpected incoming credit is not automatically an unauthorized debit from your account. Explain exactly what happened: money arrived, you did not request it, and someone may be asking you to move it. The bank can determine whether it was a mistaken transfer, a fraud-linked payment, or another issue and can tell you the compliant handling route.
Use an official contact route
- Open the bank’s official mobile app or website by typing the address yourself.
- Call the number printed on your debit card, passbook or the bank’s official website.
- Visit a branch if remote support cannot place the required restriction.
Do not use a telephone number, screen-sharing invitation or “refund” link sent by the stranger. Bank staff should not need your UPI PIN to log a complaint.

Describe the incident in precise terms
Tell the agent the credit is suspicious, provide the transaction ID and ask whether UPI access, the account, the mobile number or the app session should be restricted. Mention every related call, message, collect request, QR code or link. If you clicked a link or disclosed a credential, say so immediately; it changes the protection steps the bank may take.
Get written confirmation
Request the complaint number, the restrictions applied, the next action expected from you and the bank’s instructions for the incoming funds. Save SMS and email confirmations. A bank may investigate and advise on recovery or reversal, but official sources do not describe one guaranteed reversal process for every suspicious incoming credit.
When and how to use 1930 and the cybercrime portal
Use the national cybercrime channel when the event appears to involve deception, unauthorized access, impersonation, a malicious link, a coerced collect request or another financial cyber fraud. Call 1930 as soon as possible. You should still notify the bank; the two routes serve different purposes.
- Call 1930 and explain that a suspicious UPI transaction or fraud attempt is involved.
- Write down the acknowledgement or login ID provided by the helpline.
- Use that information to complete the complaint on cybercrime.gov.in within 24 hours, as stated in the portal instructions.
- Upload or retain screenshots and provide the transaction and account identifiers requested by the portal.
- Keep the complaint number and share it with the bank if requested.
Portal screens and deadlines can be revised. Read the current instructions displayed at the time of filing, and do not wait for portal registration before alerting the bank.

NPCI directs fraudulent, unidentified and unauthorized transactions to the user’s bank. A complaint route is not the same as a payment-cancellation mechanism.
Information and evidence checklist
Prepare one folder containing the following. Do not edit screenshots or crop out transaction identifiers.
- UPI transaction ID, UTR or reference number
- Date, time and exact amount
- Sender name, UPI ID, bank or other identifier shown in the app
- Your account number or UPI ID, with sensitive portions masked when sharing by email unless the bank’s secure form requires the full value
- Screenshots of the credit, transaction details and account statement
- SMS, email, chat messages, call logs, phone numbers and links involved
- Name of your bank and the UPI app used
- Bank complaint number and 1930 or portal acknowledgement
The cybercrime reporting instructions specifically identify bank, wallet or UPI identifiers, transaction ID and date, and available screenshots as useful complaint information.

How common “refund” tricks work
“Send it back to this new UPI ID”
A stranger may ask you to forward the deposit to a different account. That creates a new payment made by you, which can be difficult to unwind and may connect your account to a wider fraud. Do not send it. Tell the bank and follow only the bank’s documented process.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Scan this QR code to receive the refund”
Scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN authorizes a payment; it does not prove that you are receiving money. Reject a QR code or link that asks for your PIN to accept an unexpected credit.
“Approve this collect request to get the money”
A collect request asks you to authorize a debit. Decline an unexpected request and block or mark the requester in BHIM if that feature is available. Do not confuse a payment request with a credit notification.
“Give me your PIN so support can reverse it”
NPCI warns users not to share the UPI PIN and says bank customer support will not ask for it. A PIN, one-time password or screen-sharing session can let another person authorize transactions. End the call and contact the bank independently.
How to secure the account and device
- Change exposed credentials. If you disclosed a UPI PIN, app passcode or online-banking password, tell the bank immediately and change the affected credential through the official app or branch process.
- Review mandates and requests. Check UPI collect requests, autopay mandates and linked accounts for anything you did not create. Ask the bank how to revoke unfamiliar mandates.
- Check recent activity. Review the bank statement, UPI transaction history, SMS alerts and email alerts for small test debits or other unfamiliar entries.
- Protect the mobile number. If the SIM or phone is missing, ask the telecom operator to block the number and notify the bank. NPCI advises blocking the mobile number so transactions cannot be initiated from it.
- Remove unauthorized access. Sign out of banking sessions, remove unknown remote-control or screen-sharing apps and update the phone’s operating system and UPI app.
- Keep alerts enabled. Transaction notifications help you identify additional activity while the complaint is being investigated.
These steps reduce further exposure; they do not cancel an already initiated payment.

An unexpected credit by itself does not prove that your account was hacked, but treat any related warning seriously. Look for unfamiliar debits, new collect requests, mandate notifications, password-reset messages or alerts about a device or SIM change. Tell the bank about each item rather than reporting only the incoming amount. If you clicked a link, installed a remote-access application or disclosed a PIN or one-time password, say exactly when and how it happened so the bank can choose stronger restrictions.
Do not “test” the account by sending a small payment to the stranger. Do not withdraw the money as cash, offset it against a bill or move it to another one of your accounts. Those actions create additional transactions and can make the bank’s review harder. Leave the credit untouched unless the bank gives you a documented instruction through a verified channel.

A practical script for the bank call
You can say: “On [date and time], my account received an unexpected UPI credit of [amount] with reference [ID]. I did not request it. Someone has [called, messaged or sent a collect request] asking me to move the money. Please register this as a suspicious transaction, tell me what restrictions are appropriate, and give me written instructions for the credit.” Then ask whether UPI, the linked mobile number, online banking or the entire account should be temporarily restricted. Ask for the complaint number, the name of the channel used, and the next follow-up date.
If the first agent cannot handle an incoming-credit report, ask for the bank’s fraud or unauthorized-transaction team, use the official in-app complaint route, or visit a branch. Keep every reference number. RBI’s 24×7 reporting requirement applies to unauthorized electronic transactions, but the bank’s exact menu, verification steps and restriction options can differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep a timeline after reporting
Write down when you noticed the credit, when you contacted the bank, when you called 1930, and when you submitted the portal complaint. Save acknowledgement messages and any documents the bank requests. Complete the portal registration within 24 hours of the helpline report if the current portal instructions require it; do not delay the initial bank call while gathering perfect paperwork.
Check the statement and UPI history regularly while the case is open. If another suspicious entry appears, report it under the existing complaint and provide its separate transaction reference. Reply only through verified bank or portal channels. If a restriction blocks legitimate payments, ask what control was applied and what identity check is needed to restore service; do not ask the stranger to help remove it.
What happens after you report
The bank may place restrictions, verify your identity, investigate the transaction and coordinate with the payment system or another bank. It may ask for a written statement, screenshots or a branch visit. Follow the bank’s instructions for the incoming credit rather than moving it on your own.
Monitor the account until the bank closes the complaint. Reply only through verified channels, keep copies of every submission and note promised follow-up dates. If a restriction prevents legitimate payments, ask the bank what specific control was applied and what verification is needed to restore service.
If the bank does not acknowledge the report, call again through an official channel and quote the complaint number. For suspected cyber fraud, retain both the bank complaint and the 1930 or portal acknowledgement; they document different aspects of the incident.
