Act immediately, but use the right objective: NPCI says a UPI transfer cannot be stopped once it has been initiated. You can still limit further loss by contacting the bank that holds your account, reporting the unauthorised debit through its official fraud channel, and asking the bank to restrict UPI access or additional transactions. Then report suspected cybercrime to India’s 1930 helpline and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Use NPCI’s grievance route to route or track a transaction complaint, while the member bank remains responsible for resolving a fraud claim.
First decide what you are trying to stop
People use “block UPI payments” to mean two different things. If you mean a transfer that you have already authorised or that an attacker has already initiated, it cannot be cancelled through a universal UPI stop button. NPCI’s UPI FAQ states: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” A bank may investigate and, where applicable, attempt recovery, but you should not describe that as a guaranteed recall.

If you mean preventing another debit, that is an account-security request. Contact your account-holding bank immediately and ask it to secure the account and restrict further unauthorised UPI transactions or UPI access. RBI directions require a bank, after receiving a report of an unauthorised transaction, to take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorised transactions. The exact controls—such as disabling UPI, changing transaction limits, blocking a channel, or freezing an account—vary by bank and account type.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Call the bank’s official fraud channel. Use the number printed on the bank’s official website, debit card, account statement or official app. Do not use a number sent by an unknown caller, text message or social-media account. State that the UPI debit is unauthorised, provide the transaction details, and request immediate restriction of further UPI activity on the affected account.
- Obtain a complaint reference. Ask for the complaint or service-request number, the time your report was logged, and the channel used. RBI directions require an acknowledgement with a complaint number through the bank’s fraud-reporting system. Save the acknowledgement, call recording reference if supplied, and any SMS or email.
- Call 1930. India’s cyber-fraud helpline is intended for rapid reporting of online financial fraud. Have your identity, bank, transaction and contact details ready. Write down the acknowledgement or incident number given by the operator.
- Submit the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal complaint. Follow the portal’s current instructions and upload the available transaction evidence. An official citizen-fraud instruction document marked “For Delhi Only” says a person who reports by helpline must complete portal registration within 24 hours after receiving the system acknowledgement. Keep that geography qualification: do not assume the Delhi deadline is a nationwide rule. Elsewhere, follow the deadline and workflow displayed by the current national portal and the acknowledgement you receive.
- Raise or track the UPI transaction grievance. Participating bank UPI apps can provide a transaction-grievance option. NPCI’s complaint interface can route a complaint to the relevant member and show status, but NPCI directs fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorised transactions to the respective bank for redressal. The member bank or institution is responsible for resolution.
- Preserve every piece of evidence. Keep the bank statement, transaction SMS, UPI transaction ID or RRN, date and time, amount, payer and payee details, bank and app names, screenshots, call details, complaint numbers and portal acknowledgements.
How to report the debit to your bank
Use an independently verified contact
Open the bank’s official app or type the bank’s web address yourself. You can also use the phone number printed on the physical card or statement. Never disclose your UPI PIN, card PIN, one-time password, net-banking password or full authentication codes to a caller claiming to “reverse” the transaction. A legitimate bank representative does not need your UPI PIN to register a fraud complaint.
Give a complete first report
Tell the agent whether you recognise the recipient, whether you entered a PIN, and whether anyone had access to your phone, SIM, app or credentials. Provide the exact amount, date, time, transaction ID or RRN, UPI app, linked bank account and the phone number registered with the bank. If several debits occurred, list each one separately rather than reporting only the largest amount.
Ask for preventive controls, not an impossible cancellation
Use precise wording: “Please register this as an unauthorised UPI transaction, secure the account, and restrict further UPI transactions or access immediately.” Ask which channels have been disabled and whether you must change the app passcode, internet-banking password, debit-card credentials or registered mobile number. Do not assume that blocking a debit card automatically blocks UPI; ask the bank to confirm the status of each relevant channel.

Record the agent’s name or ID if provided, the time and date, the complaint number, and the promised next step. Download or photograph the acknowledgement. If the bank asks for a written declaration, submit it through the authenticated channel and retain a copy. A later investigator may need to match your first notification time to the transaction notification.

Can a UPI payment be stopped after sending?
No cancellation is available once the payment has been initiated, according to NPCI’s UPI FAQ. This applies even when you realise immediately that you chose the wrong recipient. Contact the bank anyway: rapid notification can help it place preventive controls, flag the receiving account, and begin the applicable dispute or recovery process. Those actions are investigations or recovery attempts, not a promise that the completed transfer will return.
Do not deliberately enter an incorrect UPI PIN as a workaround. NPCI notes that repeated wrong PIN entries may temporarily block sending money through UPI, depending on the bank. That measure is not a recommended fraud response, does not reverse an initiated payment, and can create an additional access problem while you are trying to secure the account.
How NPCI complaints work
When the NPCI route is useful
For a participating bank UPI app, open the transaction history, select the relevant transaction and use its grievance or dispute option if available. The app may show a complaint number and status. NPCI’s complaint interface can also facilitate routing to the appropriate member and status tracking.
Who resolves a fraud complaint
NPCI’s Register a Complaint page states: “Complaints with respect to fraudulent/unidentified/unauthorised transactions to be raised with your respective bank for redressal.” In practical terms, submit the fraud report to the bank holding the debited account even if you also use the NPCI interface. NPCI provides the network-level routing and tracking function; the relevant member bank or institution investigates the account transaction and is responsible for resolution.

Do not confuse transaction types
A failed, pending or technically declined payment may follow a different dispute path from an unauthorised debit. Select the category that accurately describes what happened. A payment that shows “pending” is not automatically fraud, while a completed debit that you did not authorise should be reported as unauthorised to the bank and through the cybercrime channels.
Report online financial fraud through 1930 and the cybercrime portal
Why make a separate cybercrime report?
The bank/NPCI process addresses the payment transaction and account controls. The 1930 helpline and National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal create a cybercrime report that can support rapid coordination and investigation. Use both paths for suspected fraud rather than treating the portal as a replacement for notifying the bank.
Information to prepare
- Your name, mobile number and identification details requested by the portal or helpline.
- The bank and UPI app involved, the account or virtual payment address, transaction ID or RRN, date, time and amount.
- Copies of bank statements, transaction messages, screenshots of chats or calls, suspicious links, phone numbers, email addresses and the bank’s complaint acknowledgement.
- A short chronological description: how contact began, what you were asked to do, what credentials or approvals were entered, and when you noticed the debit.
Observe the Delhi-only timing qualification
The citizen-fraud instruction that specifies completion within 24 hours after a 1930 acknowledgement is expressly marked “For Delhi Only.” Treat it as a Delhi program instruction, not proof of a universal national deadline. If you are elsewhere, complete the national portal process as soon as possible and follow the current instructions shown after your helpline report. In every location, save the acknowledgement and quote its number when contacting the bank.
Evidence checklist for the bank, NPCI and police report
Make one read-only folder or paper file and add documents as you obtain them. Do not edit screenshots in a way that removes timestamps or transaction identifiers.

- UPI transaction ID, RRN, UTR or other reference displayed by the app or bank.
- Date, time, amount, recipient name, virtual payment address and the app used.

- A chronology of calls and messages, including the official numbers you used and the time each report was made.
Never forward your UPI PIN or one-time password as “proof.” If a screenshot contains a password, PIN, full card number or authentication code, redact it before sharing while leaving the transaction reference and timestamp readable.
RBI liability rules and refund expectations
RBI’s customer-protection directions do not produce one automatic result for every UPI fraud. Responsibility, the way the transaction occurred and the speed of your notification matter. The following timelines come from the RBI notification dated 6 July 2017 and are conditional on the facts and the account’s applicable rules.
| When you report | Potential treatment in a qualifying case | What the qualification means |
|---|---|---|
| Within 3 working days of receiving the bank’s transaction communication | Zero customer liability may apply where a third-party breach occurred and neither the bank nor the customer was at fault. | This is not a blanket rule for every unauthorised UPI debit; the bank must assess the circumstances. |
| Within 4 to 7 working days | Customer liability may be limited to the transaction amount or the applicable amount in the RBI table, whichever is lower. | The limit applies only where the directions’ conditions are met and the bank determines the relevant category. |
| After the customer’s negligence caused the loss | The customer bears losses until the transaction is reported; losses after reporting are borne by the bank. | Sharing payment credentials can be treated as negligence. The bank still has to assess the facts and notification time. |
For an eligible zero- or limited-liability case, RBI directions provide for a shadow reversal within 10 working days after the customer notifies the bank. The bank’s resolution and liability-determination period may not exceed 90 days under the cited directions. A shadow reversal is a provisional credit while the matter is examined; it is not evidence that every claim will be accepted or that a refund is guaranteed. The 2017 notification may have later amendments, and eligibility can depend on your account type, so ask the bank which current rule it is applying.

You approved a payment after being deceived
Report it promptly as suspected fraud even though your own PIN or biometric approval may have completed the payment. Explain the deception, preserve the messages and call details, and ask the bank to assess liability under its unauthorised-transaction process. Do not describe a voluntary transfer as a technical failure if the app shows it completed.
Best Value
You did not approve the payment at all
Tell the bank that the debit is unauthorised, request immediate UPI and account restrictions, and provide the transaction reference. Make the 1930 and portal reports without delay. The timing of your first bank notification is important to any liability assessment.
The payment is pending or failed
Check the transaction status in the UPI app and bank account. Use the app’s transaction grievance option for a pending or failed payment, and ask the bank whether the amount is subject to an automatic reversal timeline. If money has actually been debited and you do not recognise the transaction, classify it as an unauthorised debit as well; do not wait for a pending status to resolve before securing the account.
Your phone, SIM or UPI credentials may be compromised
Tell the bank that the compromise may extend beyond one transaction. Ask what it can disable, whether the registered mobile number or SIM needs protection, and which passwords or access tokens must be changed. Contact your mobile operator through its official channel if you suspect SIM misuse. Keep the device and messages available for evidence rather than deleting them in panic.
What not to do after a fraudulent debit
- Do not wait for the recipient to “return” the money before notifying the bank.
- Do not call back a number supplied by the suspected fraudster, even if it appears in a message claiming to be bank support.
- Do not install remote-access software, share your screen, disclose a UPI PIN or read out an OTP to anyone offering a refund.
- Do not assume that deleting the UPI app closes the linked bank account or stops mandates and other channels.
- Do not submit inconsistent amounts, dates or transaction IDs across the bank, NPCI and cybercrime reports; copy the values from the statement.
- Do not promise yourself a refund merely because a complaint number was issued. A reference proves that the report was logged, not that liability has been decided.
Follow-up after filing the reports
Monitor the account safely
Check statements and alerts using the bank’s official app or website. Watch for small “test” debits, new beneficiaries, mandates, collect requests or changes to contact details. Report each additional unauthorised transaction immediately and add it to the existing complaint reference where the bank permits.
Keep the organisations’ references connected
Give the bank its own complaint number when updating the 1930 or portal report, and give the cybercrime acknowledgement to the bank. Record NPCI’s grievance number separately. Matching references helps each organisation locate the same transaction without replacing the bank’s responsibility for account resolution.
Escalate through the bank’s stated process
If the first contact does not resolve the issue, use the bank’s published grievance or nodal-officer escalation route and quote the original complaint number. Continue to preserve written replies and dates. NPCI status tracking can show whether a routed complaint has moved, but it does not remove the need to pursue the bank’s escalation process.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Immediate action | Additional report |
|---|---|---|
| Completed transfer you sent or approved | Notify the bank; ask about recovery and secure any exposed credentials. It cannot be stopped after initiation. | Use 1930 and the cybercrime portal if deception or fraud was involved. |
| Completed debit you did not authorise | Report to the account-holding bank and request immediate restrictions on further UPI activity. | Use 1930, the portal and the NPCI transaction-grievance route. |
| Pending or failed transaction | Check status in the app and raise the appropriate transaction grievance; if debited and unrecognised, also report fraud. | Use cybercrime channels when there is suspected deception or unauthorised access. |
| Suspected phone, SIM or credential compromise | Tell the bank the compromise may affect the whole account and ask which channels it will block. | Contact the mobile operator through an official channel and report any resulting fraud to 1930 and the portal. |
Key points to remember
- A UPI transfer cannot be stopped after it has been initiated.
- The account-holding bank is the primary route for an unauthorised transaction and must take immediate preventive steps after notification.
- NPCI can route and track a UPI grievance, while the relevant member bank or institution resolves the fraud complaint.
- Call 1930 and complete the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal report; treat the 24-hour completion instruction as Delhi-specific unless the current national workflow states otherwise.
- RBI liability and reversal timelines depend on responsibility, reporting speed and applicable account rules; a complaint is not an automatic refund.
- Keep transaction references and acknowledgements, and never share a UPI PIN or OTP.
