Start with your phone’s built-in controls. On iPhone, you can block a specific caller, screen unsaved callers before the phone rings, silence unknown numbers to voicemail, or separate carrier-identified spam. On Android phones using Phone by Google, you can block numbers, warn about suspected spam, filter suspected spam, and—on eligible devices—screen calls. These controls do different jobs, and availability depends on your operating system, dialer, carrier, device and region.
If you regularly receive legitimate first-time calls from doctors, schools, delivery drivers or employers, screening or spam filtering is safer than silencing every number that is not in your contacts. Blocking one number will not stop a scammer who switches numbers, so a layered setup is usually more effective.

Blocking, screening, silencing and filtering are not the same
Choose the control that matches the problem. Blocking is aimed at one known number. Screening asks a caller for information before you decide whether to answer. Silencing keeps calls from unsaved numbers from ringing but sends them to voicemail. Spam filtering relies on carrier or platform classification and may move calls out of the normal incoming-call flow.

Use more than one layer when appropriate: for example, block repeat offenders, enable spam warnings, and screen rather than silence unknown callers if you need to receive new contacts. Before changing settings, decide whether you are trying to stop a particular harasser, avoid interruptions, or reduce likely fraud. Those goals call for different controls.

How to block spam calls on an iPhone
Apple places the current unknown-caller controls under Settings > Apps > Phone. Menu wording can differ on older iOS releases, so use the closest matching label on your iPhone. If a setting is absent, it may depend on your iOS version, carrier or country rather than a mistake in your setup.
Block one caller or number
- Open the Phone app and open Recents, Favorites, Voicemail or Contacts.
- Tap the information button or the contact’s details.
- Choose Block Contact or Block Caller, then confirm.
This is the most precise option when one number repeatedly calls. To reverse it, open Settings > Apps > Phone, find Blocked Contacts, select the entry and remove it. Blocking one number does not stop calls from other numbers, including numbers that look similar but are not identical.
Use blocking for repeat sales calls, robocall numbers or a known unwanted contact. It is not a complete strategy against spoofing: scammers can present a different caller ID on their next attempt. If calls continue from changing numbers, combine individual blocks with spam identification or screening.

Open Settings > Apps > Phone and select the unknown-caller handling option. Choose Ask Reason for Calling when available. Apple describes this as screening the call and asking the caller why they are calling before your iPhone rings. You can then decide whether to answer.
Screening is a middle ground between allowing every call and sending every unknown number directly to voicemail. A doctor’s office, courier or prospective employer can state a reason, while a robocall may fail to respond. It still requires the feature to be supported on your phone and by your region.
Apple says standard calling and data rates may apply to screening. Screening does not operate while the iPhone is roaming, and it is disabled for 24 hours after you call emergency services. On some older software versions, Live Voicemail must be enabled for screening to work. If the option is missing, check your iOS version, carrier support and whether Live Voicemail is available in your region.
Silence every unsaved number
In Settings > Apps > Phone, choose the unknown-caller option and select Silence. Calls from numbers that are not saved in your contacts are sent to voicemail instead of ringing normally. They can still appear in your call history or voicemail, so check those areas when you are expecting a new caller.
Select Never if you want unsaved numbers to ring normally. This is useful when you cannot risk missing a first-time call, but it leaves the normal incoming-call experience in place. Save important numbers in Contacts before enabling Silence, and tell expected callers to leave a message if you might not see the call in real time.

Filter unknown calls and carrier-identified spam
Apple’s guide describes an Unknown Callers filter that places missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers in a separate list. It also describes a Spam option that silences calls your carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud and moves them to the Spam list.
The Unknown Callers list and the carrier Spam list serve different purposes. The first is based on whether the number is known to your phone; the second depends on a carrier’s identification of potential fraud or spam. A visible number that is simply new to you may be filtered as unknown without being considered spam.
These settings depend on the options supported by your iPhone and carrier. Treat them as identification and filtering aids, not as a promise that every unwanted call will be intercepted. Review the separate lists periodically so that a wrongly classified legitimate call does not go unnoticed. If a carrier marks a genuine call incorrectly, saving the number and checking the separate list can prevent future confusion.

Apple says iPhone can identify incoming callers through Apple Business Connect, supported carriers and compatible call-identification apps. Availability and privacy terms differ by country and provider. Before enabling an app, verify that it supports your iOS release and region, understand what call data it processes, and check its current pricing and privacy policy.
Do not assume that an app available in one country works in another, or that a free download has no data-use implications. Apple’s built-in options may be enough for blocking, screening and carrier filtering; add another service only when its identification coverage and privacy terms meet your needs.

How to block spam calls on Android with Phone by Google
The steps below apply to Google’s Phone app. Samsung and other manufacturers may use a different dialer with different labels and controls, even when the phone runs Android. If your menus do not match, look for the equivalent blocked-number, caller-ID or spam settings in the dialer that opens when you tap a phone number.

Block a known number
- Open Phone and go to your call history.
- Tap the number or call details.
- Choose Block / report spam and confirm.
Blocked callers are declined automatically. Whether a blocked caller can leave voicemail can depend on your visual voicemail settings and carrier implementation. If you want to retain evidence of repeated abuse, note the date and number before deleting call history.

Block private or unidentified callers
- Open Phone.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Open Blocked numbers.
- Turn on Unknown.
Google’s definition is important: this setting blocks calls from private or unidentified numbers. It does not block ordinary numbers merely because they are absent from your contacts. A visible number that you have never saved can still ring unless you block it individually or use another filtering feature. Google documents this distinction in Block or unblock a phone number.
This distinction prevents a common setup mistake. Turning on Unknown will not create a contacts-only phone. If you need every unsaved number to avoid ringing, use a manufacturer-specific silence or screening feature if your dialer provides one, and understand the risk of hiding legitimate first-time callers.
Turn on caller ID and spam warnings
- Open Phone and tap More > Settings.
- Tap Caller ID and spam.
- Turn on See caller ID & spam.
- If offered, turn on Filter spam calls.
Caller ID and spam warnings can label a business or suspected spam while the call is arriving. With spam filtering enabled, suspected spam calls do not generate missed-call or voicemail notifications, according to Google, but they remain in call history and voicemail can still be checked. Some devices that use automatic Call Screen do not display a separate Filter spam calls switch.
Filtering therefore reduces interruptions rather than erasing the call completely. Check call history and voicemail if you are waiting for an important response. If a legitimate call is mislabeled, open it in your call history and use Not spam where that option appears. You can also use the call details menu to block or report a number. The exact buttons vary with the Phone app version.
Use Call Screen when your phone supports it
Call Screen can ask why a caller is calling, decline calls identified as spam, or show the caller’s response so you can decide whether to answer. It is not available on every Android phone.
- Automatic Call Screen is documented by Google for Pixel phones running Android 10 or later in English in the United States.
- Manual screening may be available on selected Android devices in the United States and Canada.
- Device, language, country and software requirements can change, and feature names are not identical across manufacturers.
Look in Phone > Settings > Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen. If the menu is absent, your device, language, region or carrier may not support the feature. When screening is available, configure it so that you retain a way to receive legitimate first-time calls for appointments, work, schools and deliveries.
Screening is not the same as blocking. The caller may be asked for a reason, and you can still answer when the response sounds legitimate. Automatic screening may decline calls identified as spam without presenting the same interaction. Review the available settings on your specific device rather than assuming that a Pixel instruction applies to every Android handset.

If you are unsure, begin with the least disruptive layer: turn on caller-ID and spam warnings, block repeat offenders, and monitor the spam or filtered list for a few days. Move to screening or silence only after confirming that you can still retrieve legitimate calls and messages.

A blocked caller uses another number
Number blocking is specific to the entry you selected. If the caller changes numbers, you must block the new entry or rely on screening and spam classification. Spoofed caller ID can also make repeated campaigns appear to come from different numbers.
The call is visible but not classified as spam
Spam controls depend on carrier and platform signals. A call that has not been identified as spam can ring normally. Conversely, a legitimate business can be classified incorrectly. Check your filtered or spam lists and use Not spam when the Phone app provides that correction.

You enabled the wrong “unknown” control
On Android, Unknown blocks private or unidentified numbers, not every number missing from Contacts. On iPhone, silencing unknown callers affects unsaved numbers broadly, while the Spam option targets calls identified by the carrier. These are different definitions of “unknown.”
A legitimate caller is being hidden
Silencing and filtering can move a doctor, courier, school or employer into voicemail or a separate list. Save expected numbers in Contacts, use screening instead of blanket silencing, and review voicemail and call history before assuming that no one called.
The feature is unavailable on your device
Android instructions in this guide are for Phone by Google. A manufacturer’s dialer may not include the same switches. Call Screen also has strict device, language and regional limits. On iPhone, roaming and the 24-hour emergency-services rule temporarily disable screening.
Notifications are suppressed by design
Android’s Filter spam calls option can prevent missed-call or voicemail notifications for suspected spam while retaining the entries in history and voicemail. That can look like a call never happened. If you are expecting an important call, inspect those locations directly rather than relying only on notifications.

Privacy considerations
Google says that when Spam and Caller ID is enabled, Phone may send numbers from calls involving people outside your contacts to Google to identify businesses or determine whether calls are spam. Google says it does not receive numbers from your Contacts list. This explanation applies to Phone by Google; it should not be generalized to every Android dialer, carrier service or third-party app. Read the current privacy terms before enabling an additional caller-identification service.
Apple’s built-in screening and filtering settings are controlled on the device, through supported carrier data and supported identification services. If you add a call-identification app, verify its data practices, region, compatibility and current cost rather than assuming that all apps handle call information in the same way. Carrier features can also have separate terms from the phone’s operating system.
A practical setup checklist
- Save doctors, schools, couriers, employers and other expected contacts before enabling broad silence settings.
- Block repeat callers individually so you do not hide unrelated calls.
- Enable caller-ID and spam warnings on the dialer you actually use.
- Choose screening when you need to hear from new numbers.
- Choose silence or aggressive filtering only if you can check voicemail and filtered lists reliably.
- Review misclassified calls and mark legitimate ones as not spam when the app supports that action.
- Check your carrier’s available controls and your phone’s current software after major updates, because labels and feature availability can change.
- If a setting does not appear, confirm that you are using the intended dialer, that your device and region are eligible, and that roaming or a recent emergency call is not temporarily disabling iPhone screening.
