How to block scam texts and malicious links on iPhone (iOS 26)

On an iPhone running iOS 26, use several separate protections rather than one “block scams” switch: automatic spam detection, Screen Unknown Senders, Text Message Filter, reporting, and blocking. Keep suspicious links untouched. Verify any claimed bank, delivery, government, or account message through an app, website address, or phone number you find independently.

Apple’s filters reduce exposure but do not guarantee that every scam is caught. The safest result comes from combining the settings with a strict rule: do not tap, reply to, or call from an unexpected text.

What each iPhone control actually does

These features solve different problems. Knowing the difference prevents a common mistake: reporting a message when you actually need to stop a number, or hiding unknown senders while still opening a dangerous link.

Control What happens Important limits
Filter Spam iOS 26 automatically places messages it identifies as junk in the Spam folder, suppresses notifications, and locks replying and link tapping while the message remains there. See Apple’s spam-message instructions. A legitimate message can be misclassified; it must be moved back to the inbox before you can use it.
Screen Unknown Senders Messages from people not recognized as known senders appear in an Unknown Senders filter instead of the normal conversation list. In iOS 26 this is off by default unless it was already enabled on iOS 18. Notification choices vary by country or region.
Text Message Filter SMS, MMS, and RCS messages can be sorted into Transactions and Promotions categories. It is organization, not a promise that every scam will be detected. Messages from a sender you have replied to three or more times are outside this filtering behavior.
Report Spam For supported messages, information is sent to Apple for iMessage or to your carrier and its affiliates for SMS, MMS, or RCS. Reporting does not stop future delivery from that sender. SMS/MMS/RCS reporting depends on carrier and region, and the option may be unavailable after you reply.
Block Contact Blocks delivery from a particular person or number. Apple says the blocked sender is not notified. Blocking is specific to that contact or number; it is separate from sending a report.

Apple documents filtering rather than a guarantee that all harmful texts or links will be caught. Treat every unexpected message as untrusted until you verify it independently. A message can be in the normal inbox and still be fraudulent, while a genuine message can be placed in Spam or Unknown Senders.

CPR V5000 Call Blocker for Landline Phones - You Can Manually Block All Calls with the Big Red Button - Pre-Programmed with 5,000 Known Nuisance Numbers - Caller ID is Required
  • COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
  • IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
  • Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
  • Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
  • Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.

Choose the control by the problem

Use Filter Spam when you want iOS to isolate messages it classifies as junk. Use Screen Unknown Senders when you want first-time or unrecognized contacts separated from familiar conversations. Use Text Message Filter to organize supported SMS, MMS, and RCS notices into Transactions and Promotions. Use Report Spam to submit information where Apple or your carrier accepts it. Use Block Contact when the goal is to stop delivery from one identified person or number. You can report and block the same sender, but one action does not substitute for the other.

Turn on Screen Unknown Senders

Screening is useful when you want messages from people outside your contacts separated from ordinary conversations. Check the Unknown Senders folder regularly so a legitimate first-time contact is not overlooked.

  1. Open Messages and tap Filters.
  2. Tap Manage Filtering.
  3. Turn on Screen Unknown Senders.
  4. Return to the Messages filter list and open Unknown Senders when you need to review those conversations.

When you have verified a sender and want future messages handled as known, select the conversation and tap Mark as Known. Apple says this choice affects how that sender reaches you across communication apps, so use it only after you have established who the sender is. Do not mark a sender known merely because the display name resembles a company you use.

Notification behavior depends on location

Apple says unknown-sender notification options are adjustable in the United States, Brazil, and India. In most other countries and regions, unknown senders notify by default. If the labels or notification choices on your iPhone do not match these steps, your region or iOS release may account for the difference. Screening changes where a conversation appears; it does not prove that the sender is malicious or legitimate.

Review the folder without opening links

Opening a conversation is not the same as opening its web link, but you still do not need to interact with the message to triage it. Read the sender, context, and request. If the text demands urgent payment, a password, a one-time code, or identity details, leave it untouched and verify through a separate channel. A legitimate first contact can be moved to the normal flow only after that independent check.

Check automatic spam detection and recover a real message

In iOS 26, Filter Spam is enabled by default. You can confirm it from either of these locations:

  • Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering
  • Settings > Apps > Messages

Apple’s spam system moves messages it classifies as junk into Spam and suppresses their notifications. While a message remains there, Apple says, “You can’t reply to spam messages or click on links in a spam message until you move it to your Inbox.” That restriction is a safety barrier: do not move a message merely because you want to inspect its link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore a false positive

  1. Open Messages and tap Filters.
  2. Tap Spam.
  3. Select the conversation or message that you recognize as legitimate.
  4. Tap Not Spam, then choose Move to Inbox.

Only restore a message after checking the sender through a channel you already trust. A familiar-looking logo, display name, or signature is not independent verification. If the organization confirms that no such notice exists, leave the message in Spam or delete it instead of moving it to the inbox.

  • [ IMPORTANT NOTE 2 ] In BLOCK mode, there will STILL BE some new variant numbers bypassing the database making the phone ring, you NEED to manually set up to block them OR switch to FAMILY mode to let only the numbers in FAMILY LIST through. Please refer to the manual for the CORRECT SETTINGS.
  • Dual mode;In BLOCK mode you can block callers by Numbers and Names; In FAMILY mode all callers outside the FAMILY LIST are blocked; The two modes can be switched at any time as needed and NO data will be lost after switching modes.
  • Preloaded with a large number of spam numbers that have been the subject of repeated complaints ; Users can also manually add 4000+ numbers to the NUMBER LIST to build their own database ; Add 256 NAMES to block calls by name.
  • Blocks INTERNATIONAL, PRIVATE/WITHHELD, and Out of Area numbers by default; users can SET to block the entire area code or changing numbers starting with a fixed number, such as 00, 800, 855, 999, 7324, 33626, 134567, etc.

Why a missing notification does not prove delivery failed

Spam messages have notifications suppressed, so an expected alert may be waiting in the Spam folder rather than appearing on the Lock Screen. Check the filter list before assuming a bank, carrier, or delivery message was never sent. Conversely, do not assume that a message absent from Spam is safe: classification can miss malicious content.

Sort transaction and promotion texts

If you receive many legitimate notifications as well as junk, category filtering can make the inbox easier to scan.

  1. Open Messages and tap Filters.
  2. Choose Manage Filtering.
  3. Turn on Text Message Filter.
  4. If you use a compatible third-party filtering extension, enable it on the same screen only if you understand what access it requests.

The built-in filter organizes SMS, MMS, and RCS messages into Transactions and Promotions. It does not certify a message as safe. Apple also notes that filtering does not apply to a sender you have replied to three or more times; persistent unwanted senders therefore need the report or block actions described below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Category filtering is best treated as an inbox-management aid. A transaction label does not authenticate a payment request, and a promotion label does not make a discount link safe. Apply the same independent-verification rule to messages in every category.

Report a scam and block the sender when appropriate

Use the reporting command to submit information about a suspected spam message. Use blocking when the practical goal is to prevent delivery from a particular number or person. Apple’s documentation states, “Reporting spam doesn’t prevent the sender from sending messages.”

Report an unopened message

  1. In the Messages list, swipe left on the conversation.
  2. Tap Delete.
  3. Tap Delete and Report Spam.

Report an opened message from an unknown sender

  1. Open the conversation without following any link or replying.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Report Spam.
  3. Tap Delete and Report Spam.

Apple says you cannot file a report after replying. For iMessage, the report goes to Apple. For SMS, MMS, and RCS, availability and routing can depend on your carrier and region; if the report option is missing, Apple advises contacting the carrier. See Apple’s reporting and blocking guide.

Do not reply just to make the report command appear. A reply can remove the reporting path, confirms that your number is active, and gives the sender another opportunity to pressure you. If you already replied, stop the conversation, avoid clicking anything else, and use blocking or your carrier’s reporting process if available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Block a specific number or person

When one sender keeps contacting you, open the conversation or the sender’s contact details and choose Block Contact. The block is the delivery-control step; reporting is an information-submission step. Apple says the blocked sender is not told that you blocked them.

  • Allow any blocked caller to ring through like normal with the Green Invite Button. Double Tap the Green Button to add VIP callers shown in Call History. Note: Caller ID Name and Number Service from your phone company is required for this model to work automatically.

Blocking is most useful for a persistent, identifiable sender. It is not a universal spam switch: scammers can use different numbers, so continue reviewing Spam and Unknown Senders. If you block without reporting, the number may stop reaching you, but Apple or the carrier may not receive the available abuse information.

How to handle a suspicious link without making the situation worse

Do not tap a link simply to see where it goes. Do not reply “STOP,” call a number in the text, or provide information while trying to confirm whether the message is real. The Federal Trade Commission advises that even when a message appears to come from a company you use, it is safer not to click its links. Read the FTC guidance in How to Avoid a Scam, published July 2023.

Warning signs in the wording

  • Unexpected contact: You were not expecting a delivery notice, account alert, refund, job offer, or prize.
  • Impersonation: The sender claims to be your bank, a government agency, a delivery company, or another organization but uses an unfamiliar number or address.
  • Pressure: The message demands immediate action, threatens closure or penalties, or sets a short deadline.
  • Sensitive-data request: It asks for a Social Security number, bank-account details, card number, password, one-time code, or other personal information.
  • Unusual payment demand: It asks you to move money or pay through an unexpected method.

The FTC says honest organizations will not ask by text for sensitive information such as Social Security, bank-account, or credit-card numbers. A polished design, correct spelling, or a familiar brand name does not prove authenticity. A real organization can also be impersonated from a number that looks local or from a convincing business name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify through a channel you choose

  1. Leave the suspicious message untouched.
  2. Open the organization’s official app from your iPhone, if you already use it.
  3. Otherwise type a web address you already know is correct, rather than copying the text’s link.
  4. Find a phone number independently from a statement, card, or official website—not from the message.
  5. Ask whether the alleged alert or request actually exists.

Use this process for banks, parcel services, tax or benefit agencies, schools, employers, and account providers. If the independently verified organization says there is no alert, keep the message deleted, report it when the option is available, and block the sender if you want to stop that number’s delivery.

If you tapped before realizing it was suspicious

Stop interacting with the page. Do not enter credentials, card details, verification codes, or other information. Close the page and contact the claimed organization through its official app or independently found number. If you entered a password, change it through the legitimate site or app rather than through the text, and review the account for unusual activity. The safest response depends on what information, if any, you disclosed; the text itself cannot tell you whether an account has been affected.

A practical routine for every unknown text

  1. Pause. Do not tap, reply, or call from the message.
  2. Classify its location. Check whether it is in Spam, Unknown Senders, Transactions, Promotions, or the main inbox.
  3. Inspect the request, not the link. Look for urgency, impersonation, and requests for sensitive data.
  4. Verify independently. Use an app, a self-entered known address, or a number obtained elsewhere.
  5. Choose the right action. Restore a verified false positive, report spam, block a persistent sender, or delete the message.
  6. Review filters periodically. Screening can hide a legitimate first contact, so check Unknown Senders and Spam rather than assuming every missing message was lost.

Make this routine consistent for messages that look harmless as well as alarming. A small “delivery fee” request and a dramatic account-lock warning both deserve the same pause-and-verify treatment. Do not let a familiar brand, a time limit, or a request to “confirm” change the order of steps.

Limits, versions, and regional differences

  • The paths and labels above are keyed to Apple’s iOS 26 support documentation. Older iOS releases can use different names or locations.
  • Spam detection and category filtering are classification tools, not complete protection. Some malicious messages can reach the inbox, and some legitimate messages can be filtered.
  • Screen Unknown Senders is a separate setting from Filter Spam. Turning on one does not mean the other is enabled.
  • Apple’s unknown-sender notification controls differ by geography; the United States, Brazil, and India have adjustable options, while most countries and regions notify unknown senders by default.
  • Text Message Filter covers SMS, MMS, and RCS organization. Apple says a sender you have replied to three or more times is outside that filtering behavior.
  • Reporting support for SMS, MMS, and RCS is carrier- and region-dependent. A missing report command is not evidence that the message is safe.
  • Do not assume that moving a message to the inbox makes its link safe. It only restores the ability to interact with that message.

These limits also explain why no paid app, accessory, or new iPhone is required for the basic protection described here. The controls are built into Messages, and safe verification is a behavior rather than a purchase. Third-party filtering extensions are optional; enable one only after reviewing what access it requests and understanding that categorization still cannot guarantee safety.

When to use each action

Your situation Best next step
A likely junk message is already in Spam Leave it there unless you have independently verified it; delete it or use the available report command.
A legitimate first-time contact is in Unknown Senders Verify the sender, then use Mark as Known if you want normal handling.
A real bank or delivery alert was filtered Confirm it through the organization’s app or a self-entered known address, then choose Not Spam and Move to Inbox if appropriate.
A number repeatedly sends unwanted messages Use Block Contact; report separately when the reporting option is available.
A message asks for sensitive information or urgent payment Do not interact with its link or number. Verify independently, then delete, report, and block as appropriate.
The report option is missing Do not treat that as approval. Avoid replying, block the sender, and contact your carrier about SMS, MMS, or RCS reporting availability.
You cannot find an expected message Check Spam, Unknown Senders, Transactions, and Promotions before asking the sender to resend it.

For readers in the United States who believe they encountered a scam, the FTC brochure directs them to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. That reporting resource is U.S.-specific.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I block scam texts on my iPhone?

Turn on Screen Unknown Senders in Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering, leave Filter Spam enabled, and use Block Contact for a specific persistent number. Report the message separately when the option is available; reporting alone does not stop delivery.

How do I stop spam texts from notifying me?

iOS 26 automatically suppresses notifications for messages it places in Spam. Screen Unknown Senders can separate unrecognized conversations, but notification controls for unknown senders vary by country or region.

Can I report a text after replying?

Apple says the Report Spam option cannot be used after you have replied. Stop responding, avoid links, and use blocking or your carrier’s process where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are messages in Transactions or Promotions safe?

No. Text Message Filter organizes SMS, MMS, and RCS messages; it does not authenticate them. Verify payment, account, delivery, and personal-data requests outside the message.

What if a legitimate text is in Spam?

Open Messages > Filters > Spam, select the verified message, tap Not Spam, and choose Move to Inbox. Verify the sender independently before restoring it.

Does blocking notify the sender?

Apple says a blocked sender is not notified. Blocking prevents delivery from that person or number, but it is separate from reporting and does not stop messages sent from other numbers.

How can I tell whether a text link is malicious?

Do not open it to test it. Unexpected contact, impersonation, urgency, and requests for sensitive information are warning signs. Open the claimed organization’s app, type a known web address yourself, or find a phone number independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a paid app or new iPhone to block scam texts?

No purchase is established as necessary for these protections. iOS 26’s built-in spam, unknown-sender, category, reporting, and blocking controls handle the basic workflow; optional extensions are not guarantees.

The Bottom Line

Enable Filter Spam, turn on Screen Unknown Senders, and use Text Message Filter if its categories help you organize messages. Check Spam and Unknown Senders for legitimate contacts, but never move a message merely to click its link. Reporting sends information; blocking stops delivery from a specific sender. For every unexpected text, verify through an app, website, or phone number you find independently, and treat any missing report option or familiar branding as a reason for caution—not proof of safety.
