Use the lightest control that solves the problem: mute or filter content you do not want to see, restrict or limit interaction when you want a quieter boundary, block a persistent account, and report content or behavior that may violate platform rules. If a message contains a credible violent threat, preserve useful evidence and treat it as a personal-safety issue that may require local emergency or law-enforcement help.
Choose the control by the outcome you want
These tools are not interchangeable. Muting and filtering change what appears in your feeds or notifications; they usually do not stop the other person from sending messages or mentions. Restricting or limiting can reduce interaction without the obvious signal of a block. Blocking is a firmer account-level boundary, but its exact effect depends on the service and your privacy settings. Reporting asks the platform to review a post, message, profile, or comment for a possible rules violation; it does not guarantee removal or a particular penalty.

- You mainly want not to see the content: mute the account, phrase, hashtag, emoji, or notification type, or use comment and message filters.
- You want a quieter boundary with less confrontation: use Restrict, Limits, or comparable interaction controls when the service offers them.
- You want the account to stop contacting or engaging with you: block it, then review who can message, mention, tag, comment, follow, or add you to group chats.
- The behavior appears abusive, threatening, impersonating, or otherwise against the rules: report the specific content or account, preferably after saving the relevant evidence if doing so is safe.
- You fear physical harm: do not rely on an in-app report as emergency protection. Contact local emergency services or law enforcement when appropriate.
Menu names and availability change by app version, region, and account type. Look under each service’s Privacy, Safety, Messages, Interactions, or Notifications controls, and check the current help page when a label differs.

| Control | Best use | Documented behavior | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notification or keyword filter | Reduce unwanted mentions, replies, or terms in what you see | X can filter notifications from accounts you do not follow and mute posts containing words, phrases, usernames, emojis, or hashtags. TikTok offers detected-offensive-comment and custom-keyword filters. | Filtering does not necessarily prevent a person from sending content. |
| Mute | Take a break without notifying the other account | X says muted users are not notified; their posts are hidden from your timeline, while mentions and Direct Messages can still reach you. Meta’s Instagram lesson describes mute as hiding selected accounts’ Feed and Stories. | Mute is not a block and does not reliably stop contact. |
| Restrict or Limits | Quietly narrow interaction with an account or a burst of activity | On Instagram, Restrict can hide a restricted person’s new comments from everyone except that person and you, let you review those comments, stop future comment notifications, and hide your online/read signals. Instagram Limits was announced to hide comments and DM requests from non-followers and recent followers during a surge. | Mechanics differ across services, and the Limits description comes from Instagram’s August 2021 announcement; verify current availability. |
| Block | Set a firm boundary against a specific account | X restricts following, Direct Messaging, and engagement. TikTok says blocked users cannot view the blocker’s content or send messages. Meta’s educational guidance says a blocked person is not notified and describes an option to block new accounts that person may create. | Blocking does not have identical effects everywhere. On X, a blocked account may still view public posts, although it cannot engage; the person may infer the block by visiting your profile or trying to follow. |
| Report | Ask the platform to assess suspected rule-breaking content | Meta, X, and TikTok support reports for combinations of posts, profiles, comments, Stories, and messages. X says outcomes can range from a warning to permanent suspension after review. | A report is a request for review, not a guaranteed removal or sanction. |
| Audience and privacy controls | Prevent unwanted contact before it arrives | X protected posts limit visibility to approved followers; X also offers photo-tagging and discoverability controls. Meta and TikTok describe controls for comments, mentions, tags, direct messages, and follower or group-chat requests. | Private or narrower settings can reduce reach and discoverability, and may not erase content already copied or shared. |
Save useful evidence before you remove access
If you may need to explain a pattern of harassment, impersonation, extortion, or threats, preserve the relevant material before blocking or deleting it, provided that doing so does not put you at greater risk. Keep screenshots or screen recordings that show the account name, profile URL or handle, message text, date, and surrounding context. Copy post or message links when the service provides them. Record repeated contact in a simple timeline.

Evidence preservation is practical advice, not a platform-mandated step. If reading or saving the content is unsafe, report or leave the conversation first and ask a trusted person to help document it.
A platform-neutral sequence that works on most services
- Classify the problem. Decide whether you need less visibility, less interaction, a complete account boundary, or a rules review. One account can require more than one control.
- Open the item’s action menu. On a post, comment, profile, or message, look for options such as Mute, Restrict, Block, and Report. Labels vary by app and account type.
- Apply the least disruptive filter first when appropriate. Mute words, phrases, hashtags, or notifications if the problem is volume rather than direct contact.
- Reduce inbound channels. In privacy or message settings, choose who can send requests, mention or tag you, comment, follow you, or add you to group chats. Where available, route messages to requests or prevent delivery.
- Restrict or limit the account. Use this when you want interaction reduced without immediately making a visible break, and confirm what the specific service changes.
- Block persistent contact. Block the account when messages, mentions, comments, or attempts to follow continue, or when you need a clear boundary.
- Report the exact violation. Select the message, post, profile, comment, or account that best demonstrates the behavior and answer any context questions honestly.
- Recheck privacy and account security. Review discoverability, tag approval, two-factor authentication, active sessions, and whether the account is public. A new account created by the same person may require another report or a platform option to block related accounts.
How the controls work on X
Mute when you want a quieter timeline
X’s “How to control your X experience” guidance distinguishes mute from block. Muting hides an account’s posts from your timeline and does not notify that account. It does not stop mentions or Direct Messages, so mute is suitable for reducing exposure, not for preventing contact. The post action menu can also lead to unfollow, block, and report controls.
X supports keyword, phrase, username, emoji, and hashtag muting. Notification filters can reduce unwanted replies or mentions from accounts you do not follow. These filters are useful when many accounts repeat the same term or when you want to keep a public account while removing a topic from your view.

Block when you need an account-level boundary
Blocking restricts following, Direct Messaging, and engagement. It is not a promise that the other person can never see you: if your posts are public, X says a blocked account may still view them, although it cannot engage. A person can also infer the block by visiting your profile or attempting to follow. If you need visibility reduced as well as interaction, consider protected posts and review discoverability settings.
Report posts, profiles, or Direct Messages
X allows reports for posts, profiles, and Direct Messages and may request additional context or messages. After review, enforcement can range from a warning to permanent suspension. Report the content that best shows the violation rather than only describing it in general terms. Keep the account handle and message dates in your records if the conduct is repeated.

Use protected posts and tag controls proactively
Protected posts limit visibility to followers whose requests you approve or decline. X also provides photo-tagging and discoverability controls. These settings trade some reach for fewer unsolicited interactions, so they are most useful when you value privacy more than public distribution.
Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger controls
Restrict an Instagram account quietly
Meta’s safety guidance says Instagram Restrict hides a restricted person’s new comments from everyone except that person and you. You can review a comment before making it visible, and future comment notifications from that account stop. The restricted person cannot see your online status or read signals. This makes Restrict useful when you want to reduce interaction without the conspicuous break that a block can create.
Mute selected accounts
Meta’s educational lesson describes Instagram mute as hiding selected accounts’ Feed and Stories. Because mute changes what you see rather than what the other account can do, use it for unwanted content that is not dangerous or persistent contact. If the account continues to message or mention you, combine mute with message, mention, or tag controls—or block it.
Use Limits and Hidden Words for bursts of activity
Instagram announced Limits in August 2021 for situations in which a person is suddenly targeted by a wave of comments or direct-message requests. The announcement described automatically hiding comments and requests from non-followers and recent followers while allowing contact from long-standing followers. Instagram also described Hidden Words, which can send offensive words, phrases, and emojis to a Hidden Folder and filter likely spammy or low-quality DM requests. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head at the time, wrote: “Limits allows you to hear from your long-standing followers, while limiting contact from people who might only be coming to your account to target you.” Because these features and labels can change, confirm the current settings in your app.
Control comments, mentions, tags, and message delivery
Meta’s safety materials describe controls for who can comment, tag, mention, or send you a direct message. Depending on the service and account, messages can be routed to requests or prevented from delivery. You can also decide who may add you to group chats. Review these controls when the problem comes from a category of people rather than one account—for example, unknown accounts, recent followers, or people you do not follow.

Report accounts, posts, Stories, and DMs
Meta says reports can cover accounts, posts, Stories, and direct messages across its technologies. Report the specific item and include context when prompted. On Facebook, Meta says report status can be reviewed in Support Inbox. Enforcement and review times vary, and a report does not guarantee that content will be removed.
TikTok community controls
TikTok’s Community Controls page, updated June 20, 2025, warns that settings may vary by region and app version. Adults over 16 can choose who may comment or turn comments off. TikTok also offers filters for system-detected offensive comments and custom keywords.
Filter or remove comments
Use comment filters when the problem is repeated language rather than a single account. You can remove comments you control. A custom keyword list is useful for names, slurs, campaign phrases, or other terms that repeatedly trigger unwanted attention, but it will not necessarily stop direct messages or content posted elsewhere.
Report a comment
TikTok says a comment can be reported by long-pressing it and choosing the report option. Report the comment that contains the violation and add context if the form requests it. Reporting a comment asks TikTok to review it; it does not guarantee a particular outcome.
Block or remove a follower
TikTok says blocked users cannot view the blocker’s content or send messages. You can also remove followers when you want to end a follower relationship without using every block-related control. Because TikTok notes that settings differ by region and app version, verify the result after changing it and review who can comment, message, or follow you.

What to do on Snapchat when someone has blocked you
Snapchat Support says that if another user has blocked you, you cannot report that person inside the app. If the concern is harmful or inappropriate content involving you or someone else, Snapchat says you can still report the account through its support site. Save the relevant username, content, and dates if it is safe to do so, then use the support workflow rather than repeatedly attempting to contact the person.
When a message is a credible threat
A credible threat changes the priority from feed management to physical safety. Warning signs can include a specific target, time, place, method, weapon, or evidence that the sender knows where you are. You do not need to prove the threat yourself before seeking help.
- Move to a safer location and tell someone you trust if you feel at risk.
- Preserve the message, account details, links, and timestamps when doing so is safe.
- Report the message or account through the platform’s safety workflow.
- Contact local emergency services or law enforcement when the threat appears credible, imminent, or connected to your physical location.
- Do not meet the sender, retaliate, or announce publicly where you are going.
X’s abusive-behavior guidance explicitly says users may want to contact local law enforcement when a violent threat seems credible or physical safety is at risk. An in-app report is not an emergency response and should not delay urgent help.
Common situations and the best response
“I only want the mentions out of my notifications.”
Start with notification or keyword filters. On X, filter unwanted replies or mentions from accounts you do not follow and mute the relevant words, phrases, usernames, emojis, or hashtags. If the same person continues direct messages, filtering alone is insufficient; restrict or block them.

Use message-request controls, Limits where available, and restrictions on who can mention, tag, comment, or add you to group chats. If contact continues or becomes abusive, save evidence and block the account.
Best Value
“The account is impersonating me.”
Report the profile through the platform’s impersonation category, include the account handle and proof that identifies the genuine account, and warn people who may be deceived without amplifying the impersonator’s reach. Blocking the profile can protect your inbox, but only the platform’s review can address the suspected rules violation.
“I blocked them, but they still see public posts.”
This can occur on X, which says blocked accounts may still view public posts. Protect the account or narrow post visibility if reducing viewership matters, and review discoverability and tag settings. Blocking another account does not remove copies, screenshots, or posts made by other accounts.
“The platform did not remove the content.”
Read the platform’s decision and appeal option if one is offered, then tighten inbound controls and block the account. Keep your evidence and report each distinct violation rather than repeatedly submitting the same item. For immediate danger, use offline support instead of waiting for a moderation decision.

Privacy trade-offs and account security
More restrictive settings can reduce reach, discoverability, and opportunities for legitimate contact. A private account may require you to approve followers; disabling mentions or tags can make collaboration harder. Balance those costs against the frequency and severity of unwanted contact.
- Review who can find you by email address or phone number where the service offers discoverability controls.
- Require approval for photo tags or mentions when available.
- Limit direct messages and group-chat additions from people you do not know.
- Turn on two-factor authentication and review active sessions after harassment, account takeover attempts, or suspicious links.
- Do not reuse passwords or share recovery codes with anyone who claims to be platform support.
Blocking and reporting address the other account; security settings protect your own account if the situation includes credential theft or impersonation.
What the available prevalence figures do—and do not—show
Meta reported historical bullying and harassment content-view figures in 2021: 14–15 views per 10,000 Facebook content views and 5–6 views per 10,000 Instagram content views. These are company-reported measures for that year, not a current prevalence estimate and not a cross-platform comparison. They should not be used to predict your personal risk or to assume that one service is safer than another today.
There is no single universal menu or current cross-platform statistic that describes every account. App versions, regions, age settings, account types, and product changes affect which controls appear. Use the decision framework above, then verify the exact option in the service you are using.
Quick Recap
A compact checklist
- Identify whether you need less visibility, less interaction, a block, or a rules review.
- Save evidence first when a pattern, threat, or impersonation may matter.
- Mute or filter words and notifications for feed noise.
- Restrict or use Limits for quieter boundaries and bursts of unwanted activity.
- Block persistent or unsafe contact, while checking whether public posts remain visible.
- Report the specific message, comment, post, profile, or account that violates rules.
- Adjust who can message, mention, tag, comment, follow, or add you to groups.
- Seek local emergency or law-enforcement help for credible, imminent threats.
