To block private or unknown callers on a Samsung Galaxy, open the Phone app and go to More options (three dots) > Settings > Block numbers. Turn on the unknown/private-caller switch if it appears. Samsung uses different labels across devices and regions, and the setting’s availability and behavior can vary by model, software version, and carrier.
Block private or unknown callers
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Tap Block numbers.
- Enable the switch for unknown, private, hidden, or unspecified callers if your phone offers one.
Samsung’s US instructions call the control Block calls from unknown numbers; regional guidance may use wording such as Block unknown/private numbers. Samsung uses these terms in overlapping ways, and its support pages do not establish that the switch behaves identically on every Galaxy phone. Follow the label shown on your device rather than assuming it will block exactly the same categories on every model.

On some described software, the control blocks numbers that are not saved in contacts or identified by Smart Call. That may be broader than blocking only callers who deliberately hide caller ID. If you need unsaved people—such as a delivery driver, clinic, or new contact—to reach you, consider blocking specific numbers instead.
Choose the blocking option that fits

Block a specific caller instead
If you recognize the nuisance number, add just that number to the block list. From Phone > More options > Settings > Block numbers, enter a number or choose one from the available Recents, Messages, or Contacts lists. You can also use the recent-call entry to block a number. This narrower approach is useful when you still want calls from numbers that are not in your contacts.

Turn on spam and scam protection separately
Samsung’s Caller ID and spam protection (also called Smart Call in Samsung guidance) is a separate control from blocking unknown or private callers. It is intended to identify suspected spam and scams, rather than broadly filter callers based on whether their number is saved or displayed.
- Open Phone > More options > Settings.
- Tap Caller ID and spam protection.
- Enable the feature, then review and accept the terms and privacy policy if prompted.
- Choose the spam/scam blocking option available on your phone.
Samsung documents options to block all identified spam and scam calls or to block only high-risk scam calls. The high-risk-only choice permits lower-risk spam calls through. Smart Call may not be available with every carrier or Galaxy model.

If the setting is missing—or calls still reach voicemail
- No unknown/private switch: Menu labels and features vary by Galaxy model, software version, carrier, and region. Check the Phone app’s Settings > Block numbers screen for the closest matching option; Samsung does not promise a universal label or feature set.
- Spam protection is unavailable: Smart Call availability may depend on your carrier and model.
- Blocked callers leave voicemail: Samsung says voicemail blocking for specific callers requires contacting your carrier. Some carriers may offer a voicemail-blocking service; the phone’s call-blocking switch should not be assumed to prevent a voicemail from being left.
Samsung’s Canada support page notes that available features may vary by wireless provider and software version. The same practical caution applies when following instructions from another region: use the labels and options actually displayed on your device.
