Blocking a person stops chat and whisper contact but, according to Twitch’s current help guidance, does not stop that person from viewing your livestream.
Choose the right Twitch control first
Twitch has several controls that sound similar but work at different scopes. Decide whether you are trying to change one recommendation shelf, remove a channel from discovery, filter a type of labeled content, silence audio, or stop interaction with a person. Choosing the narrowest control that solves the problem avoids hiding more content than you intended.

| Control | What it changes | Where it applies | Can you still view the stream? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Not Interested | Recommendation feedback | The shelf or collection where you used it | Yes; it does not block viewing |
| Block channel | Removes a channel from recommendations | Recommendations across Twitch | Yes; direct visits remain possible |
| Content Display Preferences | Hides or blurs selected Content Classification Labels (CCLs) | Recommendations, category browsing, and search for those labels | Usually; followed channels and direct channel visits are exceptions |
| Mute | Silences the player or browser tab | Audio only | Yes; live video continues |
| Block user | Stops messages, whispers, follows, subscriptions, and other interactions from that person | Your Twitch account | Yes; it is not a viewing ban |
| Channel ban | Prevents a person from chatting in a specific channel | The channel where the ban was issued | Normally yes, unless the channel enables the option that prevents banned users from viewing livestreams |
These controls are independent. Muting a stream does not block its channel, marking a card Not Interested does not block the streamer, and blocking a user is not the same as banning that person from your own channel. Twitch changes labels and layouts between web, mobile, and TV apps, so the menu names below are the documented names while the exact button position can differ by device or account.
Block a channel that keeps appearing
Use Block channel when one streamer or channel repeatedly appears in discovery and you do not want Twitch recommending it. Twitch says channel blocking removes that channel from recommendations across Twitch. Depending on the surface, that can include the homepage carousel, navigation recommendations, the Following page, and other discovery areas described in Twitch’s help documentation.

Open the channel’s available options from its card, preview, or channel page and choose the menu item for blocking the channel. If you are already watching, open the channel or streamer options rather than muting the player; muting affects only sound. On another device, the same action may be behind a three-dot menu or an options button associated with the channel card.
- What changes: Twitch uses the block as a broad recommendation preference for that channel.
- What does not change: You can still go directly to the channel and watch it. A channel block is not a site-wide viewing ban.
- What to expect: The channel can remain reachable through a direct URL or deliberate search, because the control targets recommendations rather than all access.
- What it does not replace: If a person is sending unwanted messages or whispers, block the user as well; channel recommendation blocking is not an interaction control.
Use this option when the channel itself is the problem across several discovery surfaces. If only one card in one shelf is irrelevant, Not Interested is less sweeping.
For Twitch’s definitions of channel blocking and its recommendation effects, see About Bans, Blocking, and Suspensions and How to Customize Content You See on Twitch.
Use Not Interested for a single recommendation shelf
Not Interested is narrower than blocking a channel. It tells Twitch that you do not want the item, category, streamer, or section in the shelf or collection where it appeared. This is useful when a single recommendation is out of place but you do not need to suppress the channel everywhere.
- Find the unwanted card in a homepage shelf or another recommendation collection.
- Open the card’s three-dot options menu.
- Select Not Interested.
Twitch says the item is removed from that shelf or collection and that the feedback can help improve recommendations on a later homepage visit. It does not prevent you from searching for the channel, following it, or watching it directly. It also does not guarantee that the same channel or category will never appear in a different collection; its scope is the shelf or collection where you submitted the feedback.
If you change your mind, Twitch documents an immediate undo option and a way to manage recommendation feedback in settings. The undo control may appear briefly after you submit the choice, while the settings path can vary with the current interface. Use undo if you selected the wrong card, rather than blocking the channel to compensate for an accidental click.
Hide or blur a type of content with Content Display Preferences
If unwanted streams share a subject rather than a particular channel, use Twitch’s Content Display Preferences. These settings work with Content Classification Labels (CCLs), Twitch’s labels for categories of mature or sensitive content. This is the appropriate tool when you want to reduce an entire labeled class in recommendations, search, and category browsing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOpen the content controls
Open your profile menu, go to Settings, then open Content Preferences or Content Display Preferences, depending on the label shown in your account. Twitch’s help article describes controls for selected CCLs that let you hide or blur the associated content. If you are using a connected-device app that does not expose the setting, open Twitch on the web and check the profile settings there.

Choose hide or blur
- Hide: Twitch excludes content with the selected label from recommendations, category browsing, and search.
- Blur: Twitch keeps the item available but obscures the relevant presentation, such as a thumbnail, so you can decide whether to open it.
Hidden labeled content is not an absolute access block. Twitch states that a followed channel can remain visible, and visiting a channel directly can still expose its streams. The setting changes discovery surfaces rather than overriding a channel relationship you deliberately created. If you continue to see a label from a channel you follow, that is an expected exception, not necessarily a failed setting.
Know the default and regional limits
Twitch says thumbnails carrying the Sexual Themes label are blurred by default for all users. Other labels and available choices can be affected by local requirements, so an option shown to one account or region may not appear identically in another. A label filter also depends on the streamer applying the relevant classification accurately; it cannot identify every unwanted topic that lacks that label.
For the current list of labels and the documented exceptions, use Twitch’s content-customization guide.
Mute a stream when you only need silence
Mute is the least disruptive option. Select the speaker control in the Twitch player to silence the stream, or mute the browser tab using your browser’s tab audio control. The video remains live and the channel remains available in discovery. Muting the tab can be useful when you have several streams open and want to silence only one of them.
Muting is useful when you want to keep a stream open while working, monitoring an event, or avoiding sudden audio. It is not a way to hide a channel, change recommendations, or stop someone from contacting you. If the stream is visible in a homepage shelf after you mute it, that is normal: audio state and recommendation state are separate.
Twitch’s viewer-count guidance says a live stream still counts you as a viewer when the player or browser tab is muted, as long as live video continues playing. A muted background tab therefore does not automatically remove your view from the channel’s count. To stop watching entirely, pause or close the player; to change discovery, use Not Interested or Block channel. See Understanding Viewer Count vs. Viewer List.
Block a person from chat and whispers
Use Block user when the issue is a person’s messages, whispers, or account interactions rather than merely seeing a stream. Twitch says a block prevents the person’s messages from appearing in chats, prevents whispers, and works in both directions. It also affects follows, subscriptions, and recommendations associated with that user. Twitch does not notify the person that you blocked them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is a personal account control. It applies wherever the blocked account would interact with you, but it does not remove that person from the entire Twitch service and does not stop them from opening your public livestream. If the concern is your channel’s access, use moderation controls in addition to, or instead of, a personal block.

From a username card
- Open the person’s username card in chat or another Twitch surface where the card is available.
- Open the three-dot options menu.
- Select Block and confirm if Twitch asks for confirmation.
From whisper settings
If the interaction began in whispers, open the whisper conversation or whisper settings and use the block option there. This is useful when the account is not currently visible in a live chat. The result is still an account-level block, not merely a mute for that conversation.
With a chat command
In a chat that accepts commands, Twitch documents:
/block username
Replace username with the account name. To reverse the action, use:
/unblock username
Command availability and permissions can vary by chat context. If a command is unavailable, use the username card or whisper settings instead. Twitch lists these commands in its Chat Commands reference.
What a user block does not do
A user block is a privacy and interaction control, not a viewing ban. Twitch’s current dedicated guidance states: “Blocking someone prevents chat and whisper interactions, but it does not prevent them from viewing your streams.” If you need to stop a person from watching your broadcast, use the channel-level controls described next.
Use a channel ban when you run the stream
A channel ban is issued by the channel owner or a moderator and applies to that channel. Its normal purpose is to stop the person from chatting there. A ban is not the same as blocking the person across Twitch, and it is not the same as a site-wide suspension.
Twitch explains that a banned viewer may still watch the livestream unless the channel enables the additional setting that prevents banned users from viewing livestreams. If viewing access is the concern, check that channel setting rather than assuming a chat ban alone removes the viewer. The setting is relevant to the channel owner or moderators; an ordinary viewer cannot use it to control another streamer’s channel.
- Block: Your account stops interacting with another user across Twitch, but the user can still view your stream.
- Ban: A channel-specific moderation action that stops chat access; viewing remains possible unless the channel enables the viewing restriction.
- Suspension: A Twitch-wide enforcement action that restricts the account across the service.
Do not use “block,” “ban,” and “suspension” interchangeably. Their scope and authority are different. A suspension is a platform enforcement decision, while a block and a ban are controls available to users or channel moderators for narrower situations.
Practical fixes when the unwanted stream remains visible
The channel still appears after you selected Not Interested
Not Interested only applies to the shelf or collection where you used it. If the same channel appears elsewhere, use the channel’s broader block option. Recommendation surfaces can also refresh at different times, so reload the page or reopen the app after applying the setting. If you intentionally search for the channel or visit its page, Twitch can still show it because Not Interested is not a viewing block.

A hidden label still appears from one channel
Check whether you follow that channel or opened it directly. Twitch’s label-filtering rules exempt followed channels and direct channel visits from the normal hidden-content treatment. Unfollow the channel if you no longer want that relationship, then return to discovery surfaces rather than the channel page. Also remember that only content carrying the selected label is filtered; similarly themed streams without that label can remain visible.
You muted a stream but keep seeing recommendations for it
Mute changes audio only. Open the channel’s options and choose Block channel for broad recommendation removal, or use Not Interested on the specific shelf card. If the unwanted material is a labeled category, configure the corresponding Content Display Preference instead.
The blocked person can still watch your broadcast
That is expected under Twitch’s current blocking guidance. Blocking stops chat and whisper interactions but does not prevent viewing. If you own or moderate the channel, issue a channel ban and enable the channel’s option to prevent banned users from viewing livestreams when that stronger restriction is appropriate.

The menu label is missing
Try the same action from another documented surface: a username card instead of the chat line, whisper settings instead of the live chat, or the channel card instead of the player. Twitch’s controls can vary by device, account, app version, and region. Make sure you are signed in to the account whose recommendations or interactions you want to change.
You blocked the wrong account
Use the corresponding unblock control or the documented /unblock username command where chat commands are available. Then choose the narrower control you actually need, such as Not Interested for one shelf or Mute for temporary silence.
A decision workflow that avoids overblocking
- Only one shelf is wrong: Select Not Interested from that shelf’s three-dot menu.
- One channel is unwanted everywhere in discovery: Block the channel.
- A whole subject or maturity category is unwanted: Configure the relevant CCL in Content Display Preferences.
- You want silence while keeping the video: Mute the player or browser tab.
- A person is contacting you: Block the user from the username card, whisper settings, or the documented chat command.
- You operate the channel and need to restrict access: Use a channel ban and confirm whether the setting that prevents banned viewers from watching is enabled.
These controls can be combined. For example, you can mute a stream temporarily, mark its recommendation Not Interested, and later block the channel if it continues appearing. You can also block a user for account-level contact while using a channel ban for moderation on your own channel. Each action has a different scope, so choose the smallest one that solves the problem unless the unwanted behavior is persistent.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop seeing a Twitch channel?
Use Block channel from the channel’s available options to remove it from recommendations across Twitch. You can still visit the channel directly. If the channel is unwanted only in one shelf, choose Not Interested on that shelf’s three-dot menu instead.
Best Value
Does blocking someone hide their stream?
No. Twitch’s current guidance says blocking stops chat and whisper interactions but does not prevent the blocked person from viewing your streams. Use a channel ban and enable the setting that prevents banned viewers from watching if you operate the channel.
Can I mute a Twitch stream without unfollowing?
Yes. Use the player’s speaker control or mute the browser tab. Muting changes audio only, so the video can continue playing, the channel remains discoverable, and the stream can still count as a view while live video is running.
How do I hide certain kinds of Twitch content?
Open profile settings and find Content Preferences or Content Display Preferences. Choose whether selected Content Classification Labels should be hidden or blurred. Hidden labeled content is excluded from recommendations, category browsing, and search, except for followed channels and direct channel visits.

Block channel is a broad recommendation control for one channel across Twitch. Not Interested removes an item, category, streamer, or section from the particular shelf or collection where you selected it.
Will Twitch tell someone I blocked them?
Twitch says the blocked person is not notified. The block prevents their messages from appearing in chats and prevents whispers, while also affecting other account interactions such as follows and subscriptions.
Why can I still find a hidden labeled stream?
Hidden label settings target recommendations, category browsing, and search. Twitch allows exceptions for channels you follow and for pages you open directly, so those streams can remain accessible.
Does a channel ban stop someone watching?
Normally, a channel ban stops the person from chatting but does not stop viewing. Twitch provides an additional channel setting that can prevent banned users from viewing livestreams; the channel owner or moderators must use that control.

Why does a muted stream still count me as a viewer?
Twitch says a live stream can count you as a viewer when its player or browser tab is muted as long as live video continues playing. Mute silences audio; it does not stop playback or change viewer-count rules.
The Bottom Line
Use Not Interested for one shelf, Block channel for broad recommendation removal, Content Display Preferences for labeled content, Mute for silence, and Block user for unwanted contact. A user block does not stop someone viewing your stream; channel owners need a ban plus the viewing restriction when access must be stopped.
