Block mature games on PlayStation
Set up a PlayStation family and add the child as a family member before applying parental controls. Sony provides setup through the PlayStation family-account guide. After that, manage restrictions using the PlayStation Family app, Account Management online, or the console.

1. Set the child’s game age level
In the PlayStation Family app or parental-control settings, choose an age level for games that fits the child. Sony documents these controls for PS5, PS4 and PS3 games. On PS5, a child can request access to a game blocked by the age setting; a parent or guardian can review and allow or deny an exception for that specific game. This lets you consider one title without broadly changing the child’s restriction level.
For console setup, Sony lists Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management on PS5. Menu names can differ between PS4 and PS5. Online, use Account Management > Family Management. The PlayStation parental-controls guide covers the available routes and settings.

2. Restrict communication and user-generated content
Game ratings do not determine whether a child can message players or view shared content. In parental controls, set Communication and User-Generated Content to Restrict to disable sending text messages and voice chatting with other players, sharing the child’s user-generated content, viewing other players’ user-generated content, and linking certain communication or content services. Sony notes that pre-written in-game messages may still be allowed.
3. Set other limits separately
PlayStation lists additional controls for Blu-ray and DVD age levels, web browsing, online-content age filtering, privacy, playtime, spending and linked services or apps. Choose the controls relevant to your household rather than assuming a game restriction covers them all. Some settings depend on the device or console.

Set content controls on Xbox
Use the Xbox Family Settings app or the Microsoft family group at account.microsoft.com/family to manage family settings. Xbox’s Family Hub describes age-appropriate content filters, privacy, online purchases and screen-time controls. Use the live app or Microsoft family group to select the available options for your child’s account.
Xbox also describes app- and game-specific time limits managed through the Microsoft family group; those limits are shared across Xbox consoles and Windows devices. For device-specific instructions, consult Xbox’s current Block inappropriate content support page. The available Xbox overview does not establish exact menu labels or a specific process for exceptions to an individual game restriction, so check the current controls rather than relying on guessed navigation.

Check third-party games and services too
Console controls govern the child’s platform account, but a game or service may have its own account settings. Roblox is a documented example: PlayStation says Roblox communications are independent of PS4 and PS5 communication settings. Chat depends on the Roblox account’s age band or permissions configured through Roblox’s parental settings. Review those controls in addition to the console’s restrictions. Parental controls reduce access through the settings they cover; they do not guarantee that a child will never encounter mature material through every third-party game, service, website or device. Review the controls for each route the child uses.
