How to Block Malicious Ads and Malvertising in Your Browser

Use several defenses together: update your operating system, browser, and security software automatically; enable the browser’s phishing and dangerous-download protection; keep pop-up and redirect blocking on; add a reputable content blocker from the official extension store; and reach software or login pages by typing the official address or using a bookmark. For business networks, add protective DNS, web filtering, proxies, firewalls, or browser isolation. An ad blocker lowers exposure, but it is not antivirus.

What malvertising is—and why an ordinary ad can be dangerous

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) defines malvertising as “the use of malicious or hijacked website advertisements to spread malware.” Criminals can place a harmful advertisement in a legitimate advertising network, so the page itself may be a familiar news site, forum, or shopping service. The ad can open a redirect, load exploit code, or present a fake software update or login page.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Clicking is not always required. CISA’s guidance warns that malvertising can compromise a network even when the visitor never clicks an ad. A browser may request the ad’s scripts automatically, and a compromised advertising supply chain can use that request to test the device, redirect the tab, or deliver a payload. An ad can also be tailored to a particular victim, location, device, or business.

Risk is higher when a browser or operating system is outdated, security software is disabled, a malicious site is visited, or a person follows an unsafe prompt. The practical goal is therefore not to find one “perfect” blocker. It is to make every stage of the attack—ad delivery, redirect, download, execution, and credential theft—harder.

The layered protection plan

Apply the controls in this order. The first four are useful on a personal computer or phone; the final layer is mainly for organizations.

  1. Install updates automatically. Enable automatic updates for the operating system, browser, security software, and mobile device. Updates close browser and operating-system weaknesses that malicious advertisements may try to exploit.
  2. Turn on the browser’s built-in protection. Use Safe Browsing, SmartScreen, or the equivalent deceptive-content and dangerous-download settings. These controls warn about phishing pages, suspicious files, fake update prompts, and unsafe connections.
  3. Keep pop-up and redirect blocking enabled. Use a narrowly scoped exception only when a trusted site genuinely needs a pop-up. Do not turn the control off globally to fix one broken feature.
  4. Install a reputable content blocker. Choose an extension from the browser’s official store, check its publisher and permissions, and keep it updated. A blocker reduces advertising and tracking requests before they reach the page.
  5. Change how you reach software and accounts. Never use an advertisement as the route to a download or login. Type the organization’s address yourself or open a bookmark you created earlier.
  6. For managed networks, add network controls. CISA recommends protective DNS, web proxies, centralized DNS sinkholing, web filtering, firewalls, advertisement-blocking software, and browser isolation where the organization’s risk and budget justify them.

Step 1: update every layer automatically

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises keeping security software, the operating system, the web browser, and the phone up to date, with automatic updates enabled. A browser update is not just a feature release: it can include fixes for vulnerabilities that an ad-delivery script would otherwise target.

On a personal computer

  • Enable the operating system’s automatic security updates and restart when it requires a reboot.
  • Leave the browser’s automatic-update setting on. If your employer manages the browser, ask IT whether updates are being enforced.
  • Allow your security product to update its detection engine and signatures automatically.
  • Remove browsers and plug-ins that no longer receive security updates. An abandoned extension can remain an attack surface even when the browser itself is current.

On a phone or tablet

  • Turn on automatic system updates and automatic app updates through the device’s official app store.
  • Use the default browser’s current security release rather than an old sideloaded package.
  • Do not install a “browser update” offered by a web page. A legitimate update arrives through the operating system or the browser’s own update mechanism.

If a device cannot update to a supported browser or operating system, treat it as higher risk. Avoid using it for banking, administration, or sensitive work until it is replaced or brought under a supported update program.

Step 2: enable built-in browser defenses

Menu names change between releases, but the relevant settings are consistent. Open the browser’s settings, search for security, Safe Browsing, SmartScreen, dangerous downloads, or deceptive content, and select the strongest protection offered for your situation.

Browser Protection documented by the vendor Pop-up and redirect behavior Where to look
Chrome Safe Browsing warns about suspicious downloads, HTTPS exceptions, encrypted archives, and fake update pop-ups. Pop-ups are blocked by default; individual sites can be allowed through exceptions. Settings → Privacy and security → Security, then the Pop-ups and redirects section. Labels can vary by release.
Firefox Deceptive-content and dangerous-download protection can warn before a harmful file is opened or blocked. Pop-up blocking works with third-party redirect blocking; trusted-site exceptions are supported. Settings → Privacy & Security → Security and Permissions. Look for deceptive-content, dangerous-download, and pop-up controls.
Edge Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warns about phishing pages and unsafe downloads; automatic browser updates are recommended. Use the browser’s pop-up and redirect controls and add only narrow site exceptions. Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Security, plus Cookies and site permissions → Pop-ups and redirects.

Do not weaken a warning merely because a page looks familiar. If a legitimate site is blocked, verify its address independently, update the page or contact the site’s support team, and create the smallest possible exception. A warning that disappears after an exception is not proof that the page is safe.

Step 3: block pop-ups, forced redirects, and abusive permissions

Pop-up controls stop a common malvertising path: a new window or tab that presents a fake virus alert, a download prompt, or a credential form. Redirect blocking helps when an ad attempts to send the current tab through several domains before landing on a scam page.

  1. Open the browser’s site-permission settings.
  2. Set Pop-ups and redirects to blocked or prevented.
  3. Review the allowed list and remove sites you no longer trust.
  4. When a site fails, identify the exact feature that needs a pop-up—such as a payment window or a document viewer—instead of disabling protection for every site.
  5. After adding an exception, retest the feature and remove the exception if it is no longer needed.

Firefox’s documented approach combines pop-up blocking with third-party redirect blocking. Some legitimate banking, meeting, printing, and authentication workflows use pop-ups, so a narrowly scoped exception is safer than a blanket disablement. If a site demands that you allow pop-ups before showing ordinary content, leave the page and verify the site through a separately typed address.

Step 4: add a content-blocking extension safely

Mozilla identifies uBlock Origin and Adblock Plus as add-ons that block advertising and unwanted content. A reputable blocker can prevent many ad scripts, tracking calls, and redirect chains from loading in the first place.

Install from the official store

  1. Open the browser’s official extension or add-on store from the browser menu, not from an advertisement.
  2. Search for the exact extension name and inspect the publisher, user feedback, update history, and requested permissions.
  3. Install only the extension you intended to choose. Avoid similarly named copies, “free video” helpers, and extensions that request unrelated access.
  4. Review the permissions prompt before confirming. A blocker may need access to page content to filter it, but a request that does not match that purpose deserves scrutiny.
  5. Keep the extension’s automatic updates enabled and periodically remove extensions you no longer use.

Use exceptions carefully

A content blocker may prevent a video player, payment widget, or sign-in component from loading. Prefer a temporary, site-specific allowlist entry. Do not disable the blocker for every website, and do not install a second extension merely because a page tells you to “fix” a warning. If the page still behaves oddly after a narrow exception, remove the exception and investigate the site rather than adding more permissions.

What an ad blocker can—and cannot—do

Capability What to expect
Reduce advertising exposure Filter rules can stop many ad requests and unwanted page elements before they appear.
Reduce tracking Some tracking requests are blocked, but no blocker catches every tracker.
Stop every advertisement No. The FTC says blockers do not necessarily block all ads or tracking.
Detect or remove malware No. The FTC explicitly says ad blockers “don’t detect or block viruses or malware.” Keep security software and browser protections enabled.
Replace safe browsing habits No. A malicious file, fake login form, or social-engineering message can still reach you through email, search results, or a compromised page.

Think of the blocker as exposure reduction. Browser reputation checks, download scanning, endpoint security, backups, and careful navigation cover different failure modes.

Step 5: never use an advertisement as your download or login route

The FTC’s advice is direct: “Don’t click on ads to download software.” If an ad for a program interests you, type the publisher’s address into the address bar instead. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center gives the same advice for businesses and financial institutions: type the business URL directly or use a bookmark rather than relying on a search advertisement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For software

  • Write the official address yourself or use a bookmark made from a previously verified page.
  • Check the address bar for the correct domain before downloading.
  • Reject a page that insists your browser, media player, or security software is “out of date” and supplies an unfamiliar installer.
  • Prefer the operating system’s official app distribution channel when one is available.

For accounts

  • Open the service from a bookmark or by typing its known address.
  • Do not enter passwords, payment details, or one-time codes into a page reached through a sponsored search result or an unexpected redirect.
  • Use a password manager’s saved domain as an additional check; do not override a domain mismatch just to complete a login.

Network-level controls for workplaces and families

Individual browser settings do not protect every device on a network. CISA lists several controls that can be combined according to the organization’s threat model:

  • Protective DNS: block known malicious domains before a browser connects.
  • DNS sinkholing: redirect requests for known-bad domains to a controlled destination for monitoring or blocking.
  • Web proxies and filtering: inspect and restrict web traffic according to policy.
  • Firewalls: limit unwanted inbound and outbound connections.
  • Browser isolation: run browsing activity in a separated environment so a compromised page has less access to the endpoint.
  • Centralized advertisement blocking: reduce malicious ad requests for many users at once.

These controls need careful administration. Overly broad filtering can break business applications, while an exception process that allows entire categories or domains can erase the benefit. Record who approved an exception, which exact domain or function it covers, and when it should be reviewed.

How to recognize a malvertising incident

A single odd advertisement does not prove infection, but persistent browser changes deserve attention. The FTC identifies these possible malware symptoms:

  • A home page or default search provider changes without your approval.
  • The browser redirects automatically to unfamiliar pages.
  • New toolbars, extensions, or add-ons appear unexpectedly.
  • Unexpected pop-ups continue after the original page is closed.

Also note repeated fake virus warnings, downloads that start without a clear request, or a browser that becomes difficult to close. Do not call a phone number shown in a scare message or install the “cleaner” it recommends.

What to do after a suspicious ad or redirect

  1. Stop interacting with the page. Close the tab or browser window. Do not enter credentials, payment information, recovery codes, or personal data.
  2. Disconnect only if necessary. If a file ran, the device is behaving uncontrollably, or a work network may be affected, disconnect it from the network and contact the responsible administrator.
  3. Use a different, clean device to change passwords. Prioritize email, financial, work, and password-manager accounts. Enable multifactor authentication where available.
  4. Update security software and the operating system. Do this through the device’s normal settings, not through a pop-up’s download link.
  5. Run a full security scan. Follow the security product’s quarantine and restart instructions. A quick scan may miss persistence mechanisms.
  6. Review browser changes. Remove unfamiliar extensions, restore an approved home page and search provider, and inspect notification, pop-up, and redirect permissions.
  7. Check for unauthorized activity. Review account sign-ins, payment transactions, email forwarding rules, and newly created recovery methods.
  8. Get professional help if symptoms remain. The FTC advises seeking assistance when you cannot clean the device yourself. A workplace device should be handled under the organization’s incident-response process.

Changing a password on the affected device before it is cleaned can expose the new password too. That is why the credential-reset step belongs on a separate, trusted device.

Troubleshooting without lowering your protection

A legitimate site’s window will not open

Confirm that the site is the one you intended to visit, then add a temporary exception for that exact site in the browser’s pop-up settings. Test the feature, finish the task, and remove the exception if possible. Do not disable pop-up blocking for all websites.

A page says the blocker must be disabled

Leave the page and open the service through a typed address or trusted bookmark. A demand to disable security before ordinary content loads is a reason to verify the site, not evidence that the blocker is wrong.

The browser displays repeated redirects after an exception is removed

Remove unfamiliar extensions, reset unexpected notification and search permissions, update the browser, and run a full security scan. If the home page or search provider keeps changing, treat the device as potentially compromised and use the incident steps above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A download is blocked but you believe it is safe

Do not bypass the warning from the download page. Verify the software through the publisher’s independently typed official address, check that the file is intended for your operating system, and consult your security administrator if the device is managed. A familiar brand name in a filename is not authentication.

Choosing a browser for malvertising resistance

Chrome, Firefox, and Edge all document relevant controls. When selecting or standardizing a browser, compare these practical characteristics:

  • Built-in phishing and download protection: look for Safe Browsing, SmartScreen, or deceptive-content and dangerous-download warnings.
  • Pop-up and third-party redirect controls: verify that blocking is on by default and that exceptions can be limited to a particular site.
  • Extension trust model: use an official store, inspect permissions, and make it easy to remove or centrally manage add-ons.
  • Update enforcement: automatic updates reduce the window in which a known browser flaw can be exploited; managed environments should be able to enforce them.
  • Exception management: administrators and individuals should be able to approve one trusted function without weakening protection everywhere.

The safest choice is the supported browser you can keep updated, configure, and monitor consistently. Switching browsers while leaving updates, download warnings, and unsafe click habits unchanged does not solve malvertising by itself.

A concise maintenance checklist

  • Automatic operating-system, browser, security-software, and mobile updates are enabled.
  • Safe Browsing, SmartScreen, or equivalent deceptive-content and dangerous-download protection is active.
  • Pop-ups and redirects are blocked, with only narrow, trusted exceptions.
  • Only extensions from the official browser store are installed, and their permissions are understood.
  • An ad blocker is treated as a filter, not as antivirus.
  • Software and account pages are opened by typed official addresses or trusted bookmarks.
  • Suspicious redirects, new add-ons, home-page changes, and persistent pop-ups trigger a scan and credential reset from a clean device.
  • Organizations use protective DNS, filtering, proxies, firewalls, or isolation where their risk assessment calls for network-level defense.
