How to Block Inappropriate Websites and Content on a Child’s Phone

The most reliable approach is layered: configure the child’s phone and account first, then secure the browsers and services they actually use. Add mobile-provider and home-broadband controls where available, test every route on the child’s device, and explain the rules so technical filters support—not replace—ongoing conversation.

Start with a layered plan

A filter usually applies to one layer: a phone account, a browser, an app, a mobile network, or a home Wi-Fi connection. A setting that works in one layer may not affect another. For example, a Chrome rule may not govern a different browser, an unsigned-in browsing session, an in-app web view, mobile data, or another Wi-Fi network.

Set controls in this order:

  1. Child account and phone: use Screen Time on iPhone or a supervised Google account on supported Android devices.
  2. Browsers: check every browser installed and confirm whether the child can sign out or install another one.
  3. Services and apps: configure search, video, social, messaging, app-store and game settings individually.
  4. Mobile provider: in the UK, ask whether the provider’s free under-18 content service is active; it may not be enabled automatically.
  5. Home broadband: turn on the household’s inappropriate-content controls for devices using home Wi-Fi.
  6. Testing and review: try blocked content on the child’s phone, then repeat after major updates or account changes.

No single setting is a complete block. Google describes its explicit-site filter as imperfect, and UK government guidance says parental controls cannot fix everything. Treat filtering as risk reduction, not proof that a child will never encounter upsetting material.

Prepare before changing settings

Identify the account that actually controls the phone. A parent may manage an Apple Family Sharing group or a supervised Google account, while the child may also have a second account for school, games or email. Write down which account is signed in to the operating system, which browsers are installed, and whether the phone uses a SIM and mobile data. This short inventory prevents a common mistake: configuring a parent profile while the child browses through another profile.

List the services the child uses, including search, video, social, messaging, games and app stores. The same material can arrive through a typed URL, a search result, a recommendation, a shared link or an in-app browser. A phone-level setting is therefore a starting point, not a substitute for reviewing each service.

Decide how much interruption your family can manage. Approved-sites-only controls provide the narrowest route but require a parent to approve legitimate school and everyday pages. A broader adult-site filter reduces approval requests but relies more heavily on classification and regular checking. Match the choice to age, maturity, school requirements and the child’s ability to ask for help.

Block websites on an iPhone

Use the child’s Family and Screen Time settings

Apple’s current UK support route is Settings → Family → [child’s name] → Apps & Websites → Restrictions → Filtering under Websites. Depending on the iOS version, the child’s age and how Family Sharing is configured, labels and available choices can differ. If the menu on your phone does not match exactly, use the current on-device Screen Time instructions rather than assuming a missing option means filtering is unavailable.

Apple documents three broad web-content choices in Screen Time:

Choice What it does Best fit Trade-off
Unrestricted Does not apply a web-content restriction. Older teenagers whose family rules rely mainly on conversation and reporting. Provides the least technical protection.
Limit Adult Websites Uses Apple’s adult-site filter while allowing normal browsing. Children who need broad access for school and everyday sites. A filter can miss material or block a legitimate page.
Only Approved Websites Allows sites on a parent-managed list only. Younger children or a tightly managed first phone. Parents must approve useful new sites, including school resources.

Apple also uses the label Ask to Browse for an approved-sites-only approach in its UK guide. A child requests a site, and the parent decides whether to allow it. This is more restrictive than adult-site filtering, but it requires regular maintenance.

Control apps as well as websites

Web restrictions do not automatically make every app age-appropriate. In Screen Time, review the allowed and blocked apps, age ratings, purchases and installation permissions. Check the child’s video, search, social, messaging and game apps separately; many display web content inside the app.

Use the strongest setting that matches the child’s age and independence. For a young child, approved-sites-only access plus a short list of approved apps is easier to audit. For an older child, adult-site filtering may be less disruptive, provided you review the apps and explain how to report something upsetting.

After changing the setting, open Safari and every other installed browser while signed in as the child. Test an ordinary school page as well as a blocked category. If the child shares the phone with a sibling, test each account separately; a restriction attached to one child profile should not be assumed to govern another profile.

Block websites on Android with Family Link

Open Chrome and Web controls

On a supervised Google account, open Family Link, select the child, then choose Controls → Google Chrome and Web. Google provides three broad modes:

Family Link mode How browsing works Maintenance and limitations
Allow all sites except blocked Normal browsing is available unless a parent adds a blocked site. Most convenient, but depends on adding rules as problems arise.
Try to block explicit sites Google attempts to identify and block explicit material. Google says the filter is not perfect; content can be missed or incorrectly blocked.
Allow only approved sites The child can visit sites on the parent’s approved list. Most restrictive and requires approval for new school or everyday sites.

You can add specific approved and blocked sites and review requests from the child. For a rule intended to cover an entire service, use a domain-level rule where Family Link offers that option. Google explains that a domain rule can cover variants such as subdomains, while a rule for an individual website may not cover every related address.

Keep a note of domains used by school portals and educational tools. An allowlist may need several related domains for sign-in, embedded lessons or video. Add only the domains the child needs, then test the complete sign-in and lesson flow rather than checking just the home page.

Understand which devices Family Link can supervise

Family Link device supervision is intended for supported Android devices and Chromebooks. Google says iPhones, iPads and computers other than Chromebooks cannot be supervised as devices by Family Link.

On an iPhone or iPad, Google’s separate guidance says most supervision settings—including Chrome website restrictions—do not work when the child is signed in to Google apps. Chrome guidance also warns that a child can sign out of Chrome or use another browser. Therefore, Family Link is not an iPhone-wide web filter. If the child uses an iPhone, configure Apple’s Screen Time and check each browser instead.

Secure apps and services individually

Children often encounter inappropriate material through an app rather than a typed website address. After setting the phone-level control, open each service the child uses and look for:

  • privacy settings that limit contact from strangers;
  • installation, purchase and in-app spending approval;
  • report, mute and block tools; and
  • parent dashboards or activity notifications.

Do not assume a search filter controls videos, recommendations, comments or advertisements inside another app. Apply the service’s own controls and check whether the child can change them without the parent’s passcode or account approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review app permissions and account age details when you install a new service. A child may receive a link in a messaging app, open it inside that app, and never use the browser you configured. Test those link paths. Also check whether an app permits account switching, guest use or an unsigned-in session, since those routes can have different controls.

Add mobile-provider and home-network controls

Mobile data: UK-specific guidance

Ofcom says all UK mobile providers offer free parental-control services that limit internet content to material suitable for under-18s. Ofcom also warns that controls may not be switched on automatically. Check the provider account or contact the network and ask the representative to confirm that the child’s line is covered.

This is UK-specific guidance. Provider names, eligibility rules, account controls and legal requirements vary by country. A mobile-network filter is another layer, not a replacement for phone, browser and app settings. The provider service is free according to Ofcom; that does not mean every optional family product or broadband package is free.

Home Wi-Fi

UK government guidance recommends checking whether home-broadband controls can restrict inappropriate content on devices connected to the household Wi-Fi. Follow the instructions for your broadband service and test the child’s phone while it is connected to that network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A home-Wi-Fi rule normally does not follow the phone onto mobile data, a friend’s Wi-Fi, school Wi-Fi or another public network. Conversely, a mobile-provider setting may not control traffic sent through home broadband. This difference is why network controls should be treated as additional coverage rather than a universal guarantee.

Network filtering can also affect everyone using the household connection. If a legitimate adult or school resource is blocked, record the exact address and decide whether the broadband service permits a narrowly scoped exception. Do not weaken the child’s phone and account settings simply because a home-network rule is convenient.

Test before handing over the phone

Testing is essential because a control can be enabled yet scoped to the wrong account, browser or network. Use this checklist:

  1. Confirm the child account: check that the restrictions are attached to the account actually used on the phone.
  2. Try a known blocked website: use a safe test address that the selected filter should reject. Do not search for harmful material to test it.
  3. Check every browser: open each installed browser, test the rule and verify whether private or signed-out browsing changes the result.
  4. Check in-app browsers: test links opened from messaging, social, video and game apps.
  5. Test both networks: repeat while connected to home Wi-Fi and while using mobile data.
  6. Check app and store controls: confirm that age restrictions, installation approval and purchase approval behave as intended.
  7. Confirm the carrier setting: if you rely on a UK mobile filter, verify activation with the provider.
  8. Record the result: note which browser, app and network allowed or blocked the test so you can correct a gap.

UK government guidance specifically recommends checking that controls work before giving the device to a child. Repeat the test after an operating-system update, a new browser or app, a change of Google or Apple account, a SIM replacement, or a reset of the phone.

Choose settings by age, independence and maintenance

Situation Starting configuration Parent workload
Young child with a first phone Approved-sites-only mode, a short approved-app list, installation and purchase approval, and carrier/home-network filters where available. High: approve school and everyday sites as needed.
Primary-school child who needs broader school access Adult-site filtering, app age limits, restricted search and service-specific privacy controls. Moderate: review new apps and requests.
Teenager gaining independence Adult-site filtering or a less restrictive mode, clear family rules, privacy controls and regular check-ins. Moderate initially, then shifts toward conversation and reporting.

These are starting points, not age guarantees. Consider the child’s maturity, the sites and apps they use, whether a device is shared, and how much approval delay would interfere with schoolwork. An allowlist that is never maintained can push a child toward using an unapproved device or account; a broad filter that is never discussed can create false confidence.

Revisit the balance when the child changes school, gets a new phone, starts using a new social or video service, or demonstrates that they can follow the family agreement. More independence should mean clearer expectations and reliable reporting routes, not simply removing every control at once.

Explain the controls and agree on a response

Tell the child what is filtered, which requests you will review, and why the rules exist. UK government guidance recommends discussing controls with children and stresses that parental controls cannot fix everything. A simple family agreement can cover:

  • which apps, browsers and accounts are allowed;
  • when and where the phone may be used;
  • what information must stay private;
  • how to ask for a blocked school or everyday site;
  • what to do if an image, message or page is upsetting; and
  • which trusted adult should be told without fear of punishment.

Encourage the child to stop viewing upsetting material, close the page, avoid forwarding it, and tell a trusted adult. Use the relevant app, service or provider reporting tools when content violates its rules. The purpose of the controls is safer use, not a promise that an accidental encounter will never happen.

Troubleshoot common failures

A blocked site still opens

  • Check whether the child is using a different browser or is signed out of the controlled account.
  • Confirm that the rule was added to the correct child profile, not a parent account.
  • Test whether the phone is on mobile data instead of the filtered home Wi-Fi.
  • Look for an app that displays the same content inside its own web view.
  • On Android, review whether the rule covers the domain and its subdomains rather than only one page.

A legitimate school site is blocked

  • For approved-sites-only modes, review the request and add the exact school domain or site required.
  • For adult-site filters, check whether the site uses a shared-content host or redirects through another domain.
  • Keep a written list of approved school services so a phone reset or account change does not erase the family’s decisions.

The setting disappeared or stopped applying

  • Verify the phone is still signed in to the supervised child account.
  • Check for an operating-system, browser or Family Sharing change.
  • Confirm that the child has not created or switched to an unsupervised account.
  • Recheck mobile-provider activation, especially after changing a SIM or account holder.
  • Run the full test checklist again instead of assuming the previous configuration remains effective.

What parental controls cannot guarantee

No source supports describing one phone setting as a complete block across all content and routes. Filters can miss newly published pages, misclassify harmless material, or apply only to a particular browser, account, app or network. A determined child may also use another device or connection.

The practical goal is to reduce exposure, make risky routes harder to use, and create a clear path for asking for help. Combine technical controls with age-appropriate supervision, privacy education, regular testing and a non-punitive way to report upsetting content.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most restrictive way to block websites on an iPhone?

Use Screen Time’s Only Approved Websites option, also described by Apple as Ask to Browse in its UK guidance. The parent approves each useful site, so it offers tighter control but requires ongoing maintenance.

How do I block websites with Family Link?

In Family Link, select the child and open Controls → Google Chrome and Web. Choose allow all sites except blocked, try to block explicit sites, or allow only approved sites. You can add individual approved or blocked sites and review requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Family Link filter an iPhone?

No. Google says Family Link cannot supervise iPhones or iPads as devices. Its Chrome restrictions also have important limitations on iOS, including when a child is signed in to Google apps. Use Apple Screen Time and check every browser on an iPhone.

Do parental controls work on mobile data?

A home-Wi-Fi filter normally does not apply when the phone uses mobile data. A mobile-provider filter may cover mobile data, but it is a separate layer. In the UK, Ofcom says all mobile providers offer free parental-control services, although activation may not be automatic.

Can a filter block every inappropriate image or website?

No. Google explicitly says its explicit-site filter is imperfect, and controls may apply only to a particular account, browser, app or network. Layer settings, test them and maintain a conversation with the child.

Why can my child still open a blocked page?

Check for another browser, a signed-out session, a different child account, an in-app browser, mobile data instead of home Wi-Fi, or a domain rule that does not cover related subdomains. Re-run the test on the child’s actual device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will approved-sites-only mode block school resources?

It can, until the parent approves the required site. School platforms may use more than one domain for sign-in or embedded content, so test the complete school task and add only the domains the child needs.

Do I need to buy a special product?

No special hardware is necessary for the core setup. Apple Screen Time, Google Family Link, service settings and network controls provide the main layers. UK mobile-provider parental controls are described by Ofcom as free; prices and privacy terms for optional paid services vary and should be checked separately.

The Bottom Line

Start with the child’s account and phone controls, then cover every browser, app, mobile connection and home network the child uses. Choose between broad filtering and approved-sites-only access according to age and maintenance capacity, test the result on the real device, and keep communication at the center. No filter is universal, so make reporting an expected part of the plan.
