How to Block, Hide, and Report Worlds or Avatars in VRChat

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Use VRChat’s in-app controls for the problem you are seeing: Block User stops direct visibility and interaction with a person, avatar-display controls hide what someone is wearing, and Report sends a user, avatar, or world to Trust & Safety for review. Blocking is reversible, and VRChat says you do not need to block someone before reporting them.

Choose the control that matches the problem

VRChat has separate controls for a person, an avatar, and a world. Choosing the narrowest control avoids an unintended side effect—for example, hiding an avatar when you only want to stop one person, or reporting a world when the issue is actually a user’s conduct.

What you need Use this control What it does and does not do
Stop seeing or directly interacting with a person Block User The blocked person is not visible to you and cannot see or interact with you directly. They remain in the instance and can still affect the world or its objects in ways you may not see.
Hide what one person is wearing Avatar display controls for that user Changes how that selected user’s avatar is displayed to you. It does not globally hide the avatar from other wearers.
Hide one avatar regardless of who wears it Hide Avatar Globally Hides that particular avatar whenever it is worn. Separately uploaded copies or versions are treated as different avatars.
Ask VRChat to review a person or content In-app report Use the user, avatar, or world report route that matches the suspected violation. Blocking first is unnecessary.
Include screenshots or recordings, or appeal a decision Help Desk ticket VRChat retains this route for appeals and reports that need attached evidence.

These controls serve different purposes. Blocking and hiding change your personal experience. Reporting asks VRChat to assess conduct or content under its rules. Use both when appropriate, but do not assume one automatically performs the other.

Decide whether the target is a user, avatar, or world

Identify the thing you want VRChat to review before opening a report. A user report concerns a person’s conduct, such as harassment or threats. An avatar report concerns the uploaded avatar or its features. A world report concerns the environment or its operation. The same incident can involve more than one target: for example, a user may behave abusively while wearing an avatar that also appears to violate the rules. Submit the separate reports that match those distinct concerns rather than putting every issue under one unrelated category.

Your immediate comfort and the moderation request can also be handled independently. You can hide an avatar without reporting it, report a world without blocking everyone inside it, or block a user and then report that person. A report is a request for review; it is not a command to remove someone instantly, and a block is not a moderation finding.

How to block a user in VRChat

You can block someone while you are together in an instance or from their profile when you are elsewhere in the app.

Block someone in the same instance

  1. Select the user’s avatar in the instance, or open the Quick Menu and choose the Here tab.
  2. Open User Actions.
  3. Choose Block User.

The block takes effect for your account. VRChat describes it as a visibility and direct-interaction control, not as an ejection from the room. The blocked user remains in the instance, can continue interacting with the world and its objects, and may be visible to other players. Their actions can therefore continue even though you no longer see them or their direct interactions with you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Block someone outside your current instance

  1. Find the person through user search, your friends list, or another in-app user list.
  2. Open the person’s profile.
  3. Choose Moderate User, then Block User.

This route is useful when you have already left the instance or need to block someone from a profile you can still locate. The result is the same as an in-instance block.

Unblock a user

  1. Open the Main Menu.
  2. Go to Social.
  3. Select Blocked.
  4. Choose the person and press Unblock.

Blocking is reversible. Unblocking restores the normal relationship, but it does not undo any separate avatar hide setting or report you may have submitted.

What blocking changes—and what it cannot guarantee

A block prevents the blocked user from seeing you and interacting with you directly, while also removing their presence from your view. It is not the same as removing them from the world. They can still use world features and manipulate objects, and those changes may be invisible to you. Other people in the instance may continue to see both of you and may relay information between you.

Because of that scope, blocking is the immediate response to unwanted direct contact, harassment, or a disruptive avatar you do not want to see. It is not a complete containment measure for a world with shared switches, physics objects, voice effects, or other systems that can influence several players. If the behavior appears to violate VRChat’s rules, submit a report as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to hide an avatar

Hiding is more targeted than blocking. It lets you keep participating in an instance while removing an avatar’s visual effects from your view.

Hide the avatar worn by one selected user

  1. Select the person wearing the avatar.
  2. Open User Actions and the avatar display controls.
  3. Choose the option to hide that user’s avatar. The available choices also include showing the avatar or deferring to your Safety Settings.

This setting applies to that user’s display for you. If another person wears the same avatar, that other wearer is not automatically affected.

Hide a particular avatar globally

  1. Select a user who is currently wearing the avatar you want to hide.
  2. Open the avatar display controls under User Actions.
  3. Choose Hide Avatar Globally.

Global hiding follows the avatar rather than the wearer. If several people use that exact avatar, it is hidden from your view for each of them. VRChat treats a separately uploaded copy or version as a different avatar, so a global hide does not automatically cover modified or re-uploaded variants.

To reverse the setting, view a user wearing the hidden avatar and toggle Hide Avatar Globally again. If your immediate need concerns only one person, use the selected-user hide instead so you do not suppress the avatar for every wearer.

How to report a VRChat user

Report a person when the issue is conduct, harassment, threats, exploitation, or another suspected violation—not merely because you prefer not to see their avatar. You can report without blocking first.

Report someone in your current instance

  1. Select the person, or open the Quick Menu and choose the Here tab.
  2. Choose Report.
  3. Complete the report form with the most specific information you can provide.

Report someone outside the instance

  1. Open the person’s profile from search, a friends list, or another in-app list.
  2. Choose Moderate User.
  3. Select Report User and complete the form.

VRChat Help’s article “Blocking, Unblocking, and Reporting Users in VRChat” states: “You do not need to block a user to report them.” Blocking can still be useful for your immediate safety, but it is not a prerequisite for moderation review.

How to report an avatar

Use the avatar route when the content of the avatar itself is the concern, such as prohibited imagery, offensive material, or an avatar feature that appears to violate VRChat’s rules.

  1. Select a person who is wearing the avatar.
  2. Open View Avatar Details.
  3. Select Report.
  4. Complete the form and describe what you observed.

You can also report an avatar from a menu list. Open the avatar from places such as Recently Used or Favorites, view its details, and choose Report. Reporting the avatar identifies the content for review; it does not itself block the wearer or hide every copy of the avatar from your view.

Report a world when the world’s content or operation is the suspected violation. A report about a world is separate from a report about a person you encountered there.

Report the world you are currently visiting

  1. Open the Worlds menu.
  2. Select Current World.
  3. Choose Report and complete the form.

Report a world you visited earlier

  1. Open a relevant Worlds list, such as your visited or other available world history.
  2. Select the world’s page.
  3. Choose Report and submit the form.

Be precise about whether the problem is the world itself, a specific user, or an avatar. If several issues occurred, separate them clearly in the description so the report points reviewers to the right content.

In-app reports and the Help Desk after January 26, 2026

VRChat’s Trust & Safety announcement says that, effective January 26, 2026, users are encouraged to use in-app reporting instead of the Help Desk form for ordinary reports. The in-app route is therefore the normal starting point for a user, avatar, or world report.

The Help Desk remains appropriate for two situations:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Appeals: use a ticket when you are appealing a moderation decision.
  • Reports with attachments: use a ticket when screenshots or video need to be attached as evidence.

This change does not mean evidence is unhelpful. It means the reporting channel depends on the case. Submit routine reports in the app; use a Help Desk ticket when the case calls for an appeal or attached files.

How to document a report effectively

When a ticket is appropriate, VRChat asks for a clear description and relevant context. Evidence should directly show the reported violation rather than merely identify the person or world.

  • Explain what happened, where it happened, and which user, avatar, or world is involved.
  • Describe the specific behavior or content that concerns you instead of using only labels such as “abuse” or “inappropriate.”
  • Attach screenshots or video that visibly demonstrate the issue.
  • Separate what you personally observed from assumptions about intent.

VRChat cautions that not every report receives a direct response and that it does not share the details of moderation actions. A lack of reply is not confirmation that no review occurred, and you should not expect a case-by-case explanation of the outcome.

When one incident involves several reports

Keep the target and evidence aligned. If a person’s behavior is the issue, report the user. If an uploaded avatar contains the questionable material, report the avatar from its details. If the environment itself contains the violation, report the current world or its page. You may block or hide while doing this, but those personal controls do not convert into a report automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the description to explain the relationship between related events without guessing what reviewers should conclude. State what you saw, identify the location or menu item, and distinguish the user’s actions from the avatar’s features or the world’s systems. This gives each report a clear scope.

Safety controls for immediate relief

Blocking and avatar hiding are not the only ways to reduce unwanted effects while you decide whether to report. VRChat’s Getting Started guidance also describes Safety presets and settings that control which avatar features are shown.

Safety Settings

Safety presets can limit which avatar features are displayed. They are useful when the problem is a visual effect, audio effect, performance-heavy feature, or other avatar behavior rather than the person’s identity. The avatar display controls let you show a selected user’s avatar, hide it, or defer to these settings.

Mute

Muting reduces unwanted voice interaction from a nearby user. It addresses audio, not the user’s continued presence or their actions in the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safe Mode

Safe Mode is a shortcut for disabling features on nearby users. It can be useful when several people’s avatar effects are overwhelming or when you need a quick reduction in nearby features before adjusting individual settings.

Personal Space

Personal Space makes nearby users disappear from your view while they may still be heard. It is a proximity and visibility aid, not a report and not a block: it does not remove people from the instance or necessarily stop audio.

These tools help manage your immediate experience. They do not replace reporting conduct or content that you believe violates VRChat’s guidelines.

Common mistakes and the correct fix

  • Expecting a block to remove someone from the world: it does not. The person remains in the instance and can interact with world objects. Use the report route for suspected violations.
  • Hiding the wrong scope: selected-user hiding affects one wearer; Hide Avatar Globally affects that avatar across wearers. Choose deliberately.
  • Assuming a global hide covers every copy: separately uploaded or modified versions are handled separately.
  • Blocking before reporting because you think it is required: VRChat explicitly says it is not required. Report directly when appropriate.
  • Using the Help Desk for every ordinary report after January 26, 2026: use the in-app report flow for routine cases; reserve tickets for appeals or evidence attachments.
  • Submitting vague evidence: describe the context and attach material that directly shows the violation. A name without an explanation does not give reviewers the same information.

A practical response sequence

When an encounter is unfolding quickly, use this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reduce exposure: use mute, avatar hiding, Safety controls, Safe Mode, or Personal Space as needed.
  2. Block the person: use the Quick Menu’s Here tab or the selected user’s actions if you need to stop direct visibility and interaction.
  3. Identify the report target: choose user, avatar, or world based on what actually violates the rules.
  4. Submit the in-app report: complete the relevant form with concrete details.
  5. Preserve direct evidence: if screenshots or recordings are needed, use the Help Desk ticket route; use it there as well for an appeal.

This sequence keeps personal safety controls separate from moderation requests while preserving the correct scope for each action.

Bottom line

Block a user to stop direct visibility and interaction, hide an avatar when the visual content is the problem, and report the specific user, avatar, or world when you want VRChat to review a suspected violation. A block is reversible but does not eject anyone or stop every indirect world effect. For ordinary reports, use the in-app forms; use the Help Desk for appeals and reports that need attached screenshots or recordings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to block someone before reporting them in VRChat?

No. VRChat Help explicitly says you do not need to block a user to report them. Block first only if you also need to stop direct visibility or interaction.

Does blocking remove a person from the instance?

No. The blocked user remains in the instance, can interact with the world and its objects, and may still be visible to other players. Blocking changes what you and that user can see and do directly to each other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between hiding an avatar and hiding it globally?

The selected-user hide affects the avatar worn by one particular person for your view. Hide Avatar Globally follows that exact avatar across wearers. Separately uploaded copies or versions are treated as different avatars.

How do I undo a block?

Open the Main Menu, go to Social, select Blocked, choose the person, and press Unblock. Unblocking does not cancel a report or change a separate avatar-hide setting.

Where do I report an avatar I saw in VRChat?

Select the person wearing it, open View Avatar Details, choose Report, and complete the form. You can also open an avatar from lists such as Recently Used or Favorites and report it from its details.

How do I report the world I am currently in?

Open the Worlds menu, select Current World, choose Report, and complete the form. A previously visited world can be reported from its page in a relevant Worlds list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I use the Help Desk instead of the in-app report form?

Since January 26, 2026, ordinary user, avatar, and world reports should start in the app. Use a Help Desk ticket for an appeal or when screenshots or recordings need to be attached as evidence.

Will VRChat tell me what action it took on my report?

Not necessarily. VRChat says not every report receives a direct response and that it does not share the details of moderation actions. Provide clear context and evidence, then do not assume a lack of reply means no review occurred.

Can Safety Mode or Personal Space replace a report?

No. Safety presets, Safe Mode, mute, and Personal Space help reduce unwanted visual, audio, or proximity effects. They do not submit a moderation report or replace reporting conduct or content you believe violates VRChat’s guidelines.

The Bottom Line

Use Block User for immediate control over direct contact, avatar hiding for unwanted visuals, and the matching in-app report route for a user, avatar, or world. Blocking is reversible but does not remove anyone from an instance. Since January 26, 2026, ordinary reports belong in the app; use the Help Desk for appeals or attached screenshots and recordings.
