How to Block Crypto Wallet Pop-Ups and Suspicious Links in Your Browser

Keep your browser’s built-in phishing and unsafe-site protections on, close wallet prompts you did not trigger, and never enter a Secret Recovery Phrase on a website. Before installing a wallet or opening a crypto link, verify it through the project’s official source. Browser and wallet warnings can help, but they do not catch every threat or make an unsafe action safe.

What to do when a crypto wallet pop-up appears unexpectedly

If a wallet prompt appears just because you opened a website—or appears without you starting a transaction—do not connect, approve, or sign anything. Close the prompt and the site. MetaMask’s guidance says its genuine extension does not pop up without a transaction initiated by the user; a prompt that appears on site entry or at random is likely a scam. That guidance concerns MetaMask, not every wallet or browser.

Do not treat a familiar logo, convincing design, or the appearance of a wallet window as proof that a site or request is legitimate. Scammers can imitate wallet interfaces and prompts. A real wallet may also display a request from a deceptive website: the wallet’s presence does not establish that the requested action is safe.

  • Do not reveal your Secret Recovery Phrase. A legitimate MetaMask site or non-malicious decentralized application will not ask you to type it into a webpage, support form, or unsolicited prompt.
  • Do not connect or sign because a page tells you to. Read the wallet request and consider what it authorizes. If the action is unclear or unexpected, reject it and leave the site.
  • Do not download a wallet from an advertisement, message, or unfamiliar site. Use the wallet’s official download page or a verified official browser extension store, and check the publisher.
  • Take browser and wallet warnings seriously. A warning is a reason to stop and verify, not a challenge to click through.

If you are unsure whether a prompt was triggered by something you did, err on the side of closing it. Reopen the project by navigating from a known official source, rather than returning through the same link or prompt. Then decide whether to connect only if you recognize the site and understand the requested action.

How to turn on browser phishing and unsafe-site protection

Built-in browser protection is an important layer against known phishing sites, malware, deceptive pages, and harmful downloads. The instructions below are for desktop Chrome and Firefox. Labels can shift between releases, and a work- or school-managed device may restrict available settings.

Google Chrome on desktop

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then choose Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and security → Security.
  3. Check that Safe Browsing is enabled. Chrome says phishing and malware detection is on by default and Google advises against turning Safe Browsing off.
  4. If you want real-time warnings about known and new unsafe sites, review the available Safe Browsing options and enable Enhanced Safe Browsing if it suits your needs.

Google describes Safe Browsing coverage as including phishing, malware, abusive extensions, malicious and intrusive ads, and social engineering. Enhanced Safe Browsing offers real-time warnings about known and new unsafe sites. These protections reduce risk; they do not guarantee that every newly created phishing page or malicious link will be detected.

If Chrome displays a red Dangerous site warning, leave the page rather than proceeding. Chrome describes unsafe sites as including phishing and social engineering pages, malware, unwanted software, and deceptive look-alike URLs. On a managed device, an administrator may control Safe Browsing, so a setting you cannot change may be enforced by your organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are checking a shared or organization-managed computer, do not assume a grayed-out control means protection is off. Chrome notes that an administrator may manage the setting on work or school devices. If you need to know which policy applies, ask the organization’s administrator rather than trying to override the control.

Mozilla Firefox on desktop

  1. Open Firefox’s menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security.
  3. Find the Security area, including the controls sometimes grouped under connection and software security.
  4. Confirm that Block dangerous and deceptive content is checked, along with the relevant controls for dangerous downloads and warnings about unwanted or uncommon software.

Mozilla says these protections are on by default unless someone has changed the settings. Firefox can warn when you visit a suspicious site and block a detected harmful download. Mozilla describes its site-checking mechanism as comparing visited sites with lists of reported phishing, unwanted-software, and malware sites; those lists are updated about every 30 minutes while protection is enabled. That update interval is Mozilla’s description of the lists, not a promise that every new link will be identified immediately.

When reviewing Firefox, check the separate protections rather than looking only for one phishing switch. Site warnings, dangerous-download blocking, and warnings about unwanted or uncommon software address related but distinct risks. The exact grouping and labels can change between Firefox versions, so use the Security section and verify that the relevant controls remain checked.

Chrome and Firefox: what the built-in controls do

Browser Default protection, according to its documentation What the user can check or enable Documented response Provider information sharing or administration
Chrome desktop Google says phishing and malware detection is on by default. Settings → Privacy and security → Security; Safe Browsing options include Enhanced Safe Browsing. Warnings about unsafe sites, including phishing, social engineering, malware, unwanted software, and deceptive URLs. Whether information is shared with a provider is not stated on the cited Google help page. An administrator may manage settings on work or school devices.
Firefox desktop Mozilla says dangerous and deceptive content protections are on by default unless settings were changed. Settings → Privacy & Security → Security; review dangerous-site, download, and unwanted-software controls. Warnings for suspicious sites and blocking of detected harmful downloads; Mozilla describes list updates about every 30 minutes while enabled. Whether information is shared with a provider or an administrator manages the setting is not stated on the cited Mozilla page.

This is a comparison of documented controls, not a head-to-head security test. The cited browser documentation does not establish that one browser blocks more crypto scams than the other. Mobile settings and behavior may differ from these desktop paths.

The two browsers describe protection in terms of unsafe-site and download checks, but their documented responses are not identical: Firefox says it warns about suspicious sites and blocks a detected harmful download; Chrome describes warnings about unsafe sites. Neither description means every dangerous page is blocked from loading, nor do these settings judge whether a transaction is appropriate for you. The available Google and Mozilla documentation also does not establish a provider-information-sharing comparison, so do not infer one from this table.

Why the ordinary pop-up blocker is not enough

A browser’s ordinary pop-up control is meant to limit unsolicited website windows. That can reduce nuisance prompts, but it is not the same as identifying a fake wallet site or stopping a malicious extension. A phishing page can load as an ordinary tab, display a fake wallet panel inside the page, or persuade you to approve a request in a real wallet. The documented protections covered here focus on unsafe sites, downloads, and wallet alerts—not a guarantee that every wallet-looking panel will be blocked by the pop-up setting.

For that reason, do not try to solve crypto phishing by turning on one pop-up setting and assuming you are protected. Keep browser safety checks enabled, avoid unexpected wallet actions, and verify the domain and transaction before proceeding. The browser can evaluate a site or download; it cannot decide whether the transaction you intend to make is the right one for you.

So, should you turn on the browser’s regular pop-up blocker? It may help reduce unsolicited windows, but it is not a substitute for Safe Browsing or Firefox’s dangerous-content protections. Nor does it prove that a fake panel embedded in a webpage, a deceptive tab, or a malicious extension has been stopped. Treat it as a convenience control, not a crypto-security guarantee.

How to tell whether a wallet prompt or crypto link is suspicious

Check what triggered the prompt

Ask whether you deliberately clicked a connect button or initiated a transaction on a site you intended to use. For MetaMask, the company’s Help Center says, “MetaMask will never pop up without you initiating a transaction.” A prompt appearing simply on entering a site, or appearing at random, is a strong reason to close it. Do not treat this sentence as a technical guarantee about every wallet or every browser interaction.

Verify the exact domain and extension publisher

Look carefully at the whole domain, not just the site name, logo, or first word in the address. A look-alike URL can use spelling variations or extra words to impersonate a project. If a project link arrived in a message, search result, social post, or advertisement, do not rely on that item as the authority for the destination. Navigate using a source you already trust, such as the project’s official site, and confirm that it points to the same domain or extension listing.

For a wallet installation, MetaMask recommends its official download page or an official browser extension store. Check the publisher shown in the store before installing. A store listing or polished website is not, by itself, proof that a link is genuine; verify through the project’s official source.

When checking a URL, compare the actual domain character by character with the one linked from the official project site. A project name in the address is not enough: look for small spelling changes or extra words that make the destination a look-alike. If you cannot confidently establish that the domain or extension listing is official, do not connect a wallet or download the software.

Inspect the action before signing

Read the wallet’s request rather than approving it because a website says it is required to continue. If the requested action is poorly explained, unexpected, or unrelated to what you intended to do, do not sign. A page’s visual appearance cannot establish legitimacy, and a transaction simulation or warning may provide useful context without proving that an action is safe.

When the request includes a contract address or other project-specific detail, compare it against the project’s official channels. If you cannot verify the address or understand what the wallet is asking you to authorize, stop instead of guessing.

A useful final check is to ask whether the request matches the action you meant to take. If you expected to view information but the wallet asks you to sign, or the explanation does not make clear what you are authorizing, pause. Do not let a countdown, an error message, or a site’s claim that signing is required replace your own understanding of the request.

What browser warnings and wallet alerts mean

Browser protections and wallet alerts operate at different points. Chrome Safe Browsing and Firefox’s security protections evaluate unsafe sites or downloads. MetaMask security alerts provide trust and transaction/site risk signals. An alert can give you a reason to stop and check the domain or transaction, but it does not replace your own verification of what you are about to do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MetaMask says its alerts are enabled by default in Extension and Mobile, and that alert classifications can change as threat information changes. Its transaction simulations can improve alerts, but do not detect every threat. A warning labeled Malicious has a clear response in MetaMask’s guidance: do not connect your wallet or sign a transaction, and close the site. The warning itself does not technically prevent you from proceeding, so do not mistake the ability to continue for evidence that it is safe.

If a warning is less definitive than “Malicious,” pause rather than dismissing it reflexively. Recheck the exact URL and verify the contract address or project through official channels. If those details do not match or you cannot establish what the request does, do not connect or sign.

A browser warning and a wallet alert are not interchangeable. A browser may flag a reported unsafe site or a dangerous download, while a wallet alert can present risk signals related to a site or transaction. Neither one certifies every action that passes without a warning. A clean-looking page or the absence of an alert is not proof that a link, extension, or transaction is safe.

What to do if you entered your recovery phrase

If you typed your Secret Recovery Phrase into a website, form, or unexpected prompt, treat the wallet as compromised. MetaMask directs users in this situation to migrate to a new recovery phrase. Do not assume that closing a tab, changing browser settings, or removing an extension reverses exposure of the phrase. Follow the wallet provider’s official recovery guidance from a trusted source, and do not provide the phrase to anyone claiming to help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you only encountered a suspicious page but did not enter a phrase, connect a wallet, or sign a transaction, close the site and avoid returning through the same link. If you did connect or sign, review the wallet activity and seek guidance through the wallet’s official support materials. Never share your recovery phrase as part of that review.

Changing a browser setting can help keep protections enabled for future browsing, but it does not undo a phrase disclosure. Keep the distinction clear: a suspicious link you did not act on calls for caution and avoidance; an exposed recovery phrase calls for treating that wallet as compromised and following the wallet provider’s migration guidance.

Why warnings cannot guarantee safety

Browser blocklists and wallet risk systems rely on information and detection methods that cannot cover every new or changing threat. A newly created phishing page may not yet appear on a reported-site list, while a deceptive request can be dangerous even on a page that loads without a browser warning. Likewise, a wallet alert or transaction simulation is a warning layer, not a guarantee that every harmful request will be detected.

A MetaMask security report from July 2025 said that Koi Security had discovered over 40 malicious Firefox extensions impersonating crypto wallets, including MetaMask. The report described a campaign active at that time; this figure is not a count of extensions currently active in 2026, nor a measure of how often browser protection blocks attacks. It is a reminder to verify extension publisher and installation source rather than trusting a familiar wallet name or icon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google and Mozilla document built-in browser defenses, and MetaMask documents wallet alerts and safety guidance. Those sources do not provide a general percentage of crypto pop-ups or suspicious links that these protections block. No browser setting can substitute for refusing to reveal a recovery phrase or carefully reviewing an action before signing.

For the same reason, a browser choice alone is not a reliable way to rank your protection. Google and Mozilla describe different controls and responses, but their documentation is not a comparative test of how many crypto scams each browser catches. Keep the protections enabled in whichever supported browser you use, verify links independently, and treat unexpected wallet requests as a stop signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop fake MetaMask pop-ups?

Close a prompt that appears when you have not initiated a transaction, and do not connect, approve, or sign. MetaMask says its genuine extension will not pop up without a transaction initiated by the user. Keep your browser’s unsafe-site protections enabled, and never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase into a website or prompt.

How do I block suspicious crypto links?

Keep Chrome Safe Browsing or Firefox’s dangerous and deceptive content protections enabled. If the browser warns that a site is dangerous, leave it. For links without a warning, verify the exact domain through the project’s official source before connecting a wallet, downloading an extension, or signing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know if a wallet pop-up is real?

A familiar logo or convincing interface is not proof. Ask whether you deliberately initiated the transaction or connection. MetaMask says a genuine extension prompt follows a transaction initiated by the user; an unexpected prompt is a reason to close the site. Read any request carefully before signing.

Will Chrome or Firefox block every fake wallet prompt?

No. Browser protections help identify unsafe sites and downloads, but they do not guarantee detection of every new threat or stop every fake panel or malicious extension. A regular pop-up blocker is also not a complete crypto-phishing defense.

What should I do if Chrome says a crypto site is dangerous or MetaMask labels it malicious?

Leave the site. If MetaMask labels a site “Malicious,” do not connect your wallet or sign a transaction, and close the site. Do not treat the ability to proceed past a warning as evidence that the site is safe.

What if I already entered my Secret Recovery Phrase?

Treat the wallet as compromised. MetaMask directs users to migrate to a new recovery phrase. Changing a browser setting or closing the page does not reverse exposure; follow the wallet provider’s official guidance and do not give the phrase to anyone offering help.

The Bottom Line

Keep browser phishing and unsafe-site protections enabled, close wallet prompts you did not initiate, and verify crypto links through official sources. Never enter a Secret Recovery Phrase on a website. Warnings add a layer of defense, but the safest response to an unexpected or unclear request is to stop.
