Blocking all cookies is a much more disruptive choice that can prevent sign-ins and disable website features.
The controls are different on Mac and iPhone, and Safari’s privacy features address different kinds of data. The guide below shows the exact paths, explains what each option changes, and helps you choose the least disruptive setting that meets your goal.

What cross-site tracking means in Safari
Cross-site tracking happens when a company or service embedded on several different websites uses cookies or other stored data to recognize activity across those sites. A social-media share button, advertising component, analytics script, or other third-party element can otherwise connect visits that occur on unrelated pages. Apple’s Safari User Guide says you can stop third-party content providers from tracking you across websites to advertise products and services; see Apple’s explanation of Prevent cross-site tracking on Mac.

Safari’s Prevent cross-site tracking control is aimed at that third-party behavior. Apple says third-party providers’ cookies and website data are periodically deleted unless you visit and interact with that provider as a first-party website. In practical terms, a service you deliberately open and use can be treated differently from the same service embedded on pages you are merely reading.

This is not the same as deleting every cookie or preventing every form of tracking. First-party sites can still use cookies for sign-in sessions, shopping baskets, language choices, and other functions. Safari’s control also does not hide your IP address; IP privacy is handled by a separate feature discussed below.
How do I block cross-site tracking on a Mac?
Turn on Safari’s built-in protection
- Open Safari.
- In the menu bar, choose Safari > Settings.
- Click Privacy.
- Select Prevent cross-site tracking.
That setting is the recommended baseline for most Mac users who want less tracking without intentionally breaking ordinary website functions. Apple’s Mac documentation explains that Safari blocks tracking by third-party content providers and periodically removes their stored data, with the first-party interaction exception described above.
What happens to embedded social buttons
Social-media share buttons and similar widgets can be used to observe browsing when they appear on other sites. With cross-site tracking prevention enabled, Safari blocks that tracking and asks for permission if you choose to use the button. You can therefore read a page without automatically allowing the embedded provider to follow the visit, while still being able to activate the feature deliberately.

Inspect or remove Mac website data
- Choose Safari > Settings, then click Privacy.
- Click Manage Website Data.
- Select one or more domains.
- Click Remove for selected entries, or Remove All for a complete website-data cleanup.
- Click Done.
Use this panel when one site has stale cookies, an old login session, a broken preference, or data you no longer want stored. Removing a domain’s data can sign you out of that site and can change how the site behaves, so record any information you still need before removing it. Apple documents these controls in Change Privacy settings in Safari on Mac.
How do I block cross-site tracking on an iPhone?
Enable the setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Turn on Prevent Cross-Site Tracking.
Apple describes this iPhone control as limiting third-party cookies and data by default. The capitalization in the iPhone label differs slightly from the Mac label, but the purpose is the same: reduce the ability of third-party providers to connect activity across unrelated websites.

Check Safari’s Privacy Report for the current page
- Open the page in Safari.
- Tap the page menu in the address bar.
- Tap Privacy Report.
The report summarizes trackers encountered on the current webpage and trackers that Intelligent Tracking Prevention prevented. It is a per-user, per-browsing report, not a universal score or a published percentage reduction for all Safari users. A page with few listed trackers is not proof that it contains no analytics, first-party measurement, or other data collection outside what the report identifies.
Apple’s iPhone instructions for private browsing and this report are available in Browse the web privately in Safari on iPhone.
How do I clear cookies in Safari without deleting my history?
iPhone: remove website data while keeping history
- Open Settings > Apps > Safari.
- Scroll down and tap Advanced.
- Tap Website Data.
- Tap Remove All Website Data, then confirm.
This path removes cookies, cached files, and other website data while retaining your Safari browsing history. It is useful when you want to reset site storage but still need the list of pages you visited. Expect sites to forget local preferences and active sessions; you may need to authenticate again or repeat a consent choice.
iPhone: clear history and website data together
For a broader reset, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data, then confirm. Apple’s instructions are at Delete your Safari history, cache, and cookies on iPhone. This command removes history as well as website data, so do not use it when preserving your history is important.
Mac: remove one site or all stored data
On Mac, use Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Select a specific domain and click Remove when one site is causing trouble, or click Remove All for a broad cleanup. Apple’s instructions are in Clear your cache and cookies in Safari on Mac. Removing data is a cleanup action; it does not replace the ongoing protection provided by Prevent cross-site tracking.

Which Safari privacy option should you use?
| Option | What it does | Best use and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent cross-site tracking | Limits third-party tracking through Safari’s built-in controls and periodically removes qualifying third-party cookies and website data. | Recommended starting point for routine privacy protection; ordinary first-party functions generally remain available, although individual sites can behave differently. |
| Remove selected website data | Deletes stored cookies, cache, and other data for domains you choose. | Use for a specific site’s stale state, unwanted storage, or troubleshooting. The affected site may forget your session and preferences. |
| Remove all website data | Deletes stored website data broadly from Safari. | Use for a wider reset or when many sites are misbehaving. Be prepared to sign in again and recreate site preferences. |
| Block all cookies | Prevents sites from storing cookies and related website data. | Stronger but disruptive. Apple warns that you may be unable to sign in and that some webpage features may not work. It is not the default choice for stopping cross-site tracking. |
| Content blocker extension | A third-party Safari app or extension can block cookies and other page content according to its own rules. | Optional additional filtering. Review the current extension’s permissions, compatibility, update history, and privacy policy before installing it; Apple does not endorse a particular blocker on its support page. |
Should I block all cookies?
Usually, no. Prevent cross-site tracking targets third-party tracking while allowing the first-party cookies many sites need for authentication, carts, preferences, and security checks. Block All Cookies applies much more broadly. Apple warns that turning it on can stop you from signing in and can cause some webpage features to fail.
Consider blocking all cookies only for a deliberate, temporary test or a tightly controlled browsing setup where you accept those failures. If a site stops working after you enable it, restore the cookie setting first; clearing more data will not make a site that requires cookies function normally. For a privacy cleanup, remove data for the specific domain instead of imposing a browser-wide block.
How can I see which trackers Safari blocked?
On iPhone, open the page in Safari, tap the page menu, and select Privacy Report. The report lists trackers detected on that page and indicates which were prevented by Intelligent Tracking Prevention. It gives you context for the page you are viewing rather than a permanent account-wide history of every tracker Safari has ever encountered.
If the report names a provider you recognize, that does not automatically mean the page is malicious. Trackers can support advertising, analytics, embedded media, social widgets, or other third-party functions. The useful question is whether the page still works for you and whether the amount of third-party activity matches your privacy expectations.
What is the difference between cross-site tracking prevention and Private Browsing?
Private Browsing changes how Safari handles local history and browsing sessions. It is useful when you do not want pages saved in the normal history or when you want a temporary session separated from your regular tabs. It is not a promise that every tracker, network observer, website, or service provider is unable to identify activity.

Prevent cross-site tracking is the persistent Safari privacy control that addresses third-party cookies and website data across sites. You can use it in ordinary browsing and in Private Browsing; the two features solve different problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Safari hide my IP address as well?
IP-address protection is separate from cookie management. Apple documents iCloud Private Relay as an optional tool. Availability varies by country or region, and hiding your IP address from both trackers and websites requires iCloud+. When available and enabled, Private Relay changes how network requests are relayed; it does not replace Safari’s cross-site tracking control or remove cookies already stored on your devices.
Because the feature depends on region and subscription eligibility, check whether it is offered for your Apple Account and location before relying on it. Keep the Safari tracking setting enabled if your goal is to limit third-party recognition across websites, even when Private Relay is active.
Optional content blockers: when they make sense
Apple documents Safari content-blocker apps and extensions as an optional addition. A blocker may filter advertising, scripts, cookies, or other content beyond Safari’s built-in cross-site control, but each extension chooses its own rules and permissions. Install one only after checking its current compatibility with your operating-system version, what data it can access, how often its filter lists update, and the publisher’s privacy policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with Safari’s built-in setting first. If a particular nuisance remains, add one blocker and test the sites you rely on. If sign-in, payments, video playback, or interactive forms fail, disable the extension for that site or remove it before changing multiple Safari privacy settings at once. Apple’s overview of this option is available at Prevent cross-site tracking in Safari on Mac.

Troubleshooting common Safari cookie problems
A website repeatedly asks you to sign in
Check whether Block All Cookies is enabled and turn it off if you need normal account sessions. If blocking all cookies is already off, remove stored data only for the affected domain through Mac’s Manage Website Data panel or iPhone’s Advanced > Website Data screen, then sign in again. Avoid deleting all history unless you specifically want that broader reset.
A site looks old, broken, or stuck in a previous state
Remove that site’s stored data, close its Safari tab, and open it again. This clears stale cookies and cached resources without imposing a browser-wide cookie block. If the problem returns, test the site with content-blocker extensions temporarily disabled; an extension can filter a script the page needs.
A social share button does nothing
With cross-site tracking prevention enabled, Safari may require permission before an embedded social provider can operate. Use the button only if you intend to share, and approve the request when Safari presents it. If the control still fails, open the provider’s website directly or temporarily disable a content blocker for that page.

On Mac, the path is Safari > Settings > Privacy. On iPhone, the path is Settings > Apps > Safari. Interface names and locations can vary with the operating-system version and language, so search the Settings app for “cross-site tracking” or “Safari” if the labels are not in the expected order.
A practical Safari privacy routine
- Enable Prevent cross-site tracking on every Apple device where you use Safari.
- Leave all-cookie blocking off unless you have a specific reason to accept broken sign-ins and features.
- Use iPhone’s Privacy Report when you want to understand what the current page attempted to load.
- Delete selected website data when one domain has stale or unwanted storage.
- Use the all-data or history-and-data reset only when a broad cleanup is worth losing sessions, preferences, or history.
- Consider a content blocker or iCloud Private Relay as separate, optional layers rather than substitutes for Safari’s built-in control.
This approach separates ongoing third-party tracking reduction from occasional data cleanup. You get a clear way to investigate a page, reset a troublesome site, and escalate privacy controls without treating every cookie as harmful or every private session as anonymous.
