How to Block Calendar Invites From People You Don’t Know

To keep unsolicited invitations off your calendar, change the setting in the service that actually owns the calendar. In Google Calendar, open Settings → Event settings → Add invitations to my calendar and choose Only if the sender is known. If you want every invitation held until you make a decision, choose When I respond to the invitation in email instead.

Those Google controls affect new invitations, not messages already on your calendar, and they do not stop unknown-invitation email. Outlook and iCloud use different controls: Outlook separates email-derived events from meeting requests, while iCloud lets you report an already received invitation as junk.

First, identify which calendar account is receiving the invite

The app on your phone is not necessarily the service controlling the event. An iPhone can display a Google calendar, Outlook can show an iCloud calendar, and a desktop calendar app can combine several accounts. Open the event and check its calendar or account name, then change settings in that provider. Otherwise, you may disable a feature in one account while the unwanted invitations continue arriving through another.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Also check whether several accounts share the same email address or whether a work account is signed in alongside a personal one. A meeting sent to one address can appear in a combined calendar view even though the setting you changed belongs to a different account. Temporarily hide calendars one at a time to identify the source.

The controls below do different jobs:

  • Invitation filtering: decides whether a meeting invitation is added automatically.
  • Invitation delivery: decides whether you receive the invitation in an app notification or by email.
  • Email filtering: sends messages from a blocked address or domain to a junk folder.
  • Spam reporting: removes an invitation that has already arrived.

None of these labels should be treated as interchangeable. A mail block is not automatically a calendar block, and reporting one event does not create a universal sender filter. The right fix depends on whether the item is a true calendar invitation, an event extracted from an email, or an event created directly by an app with calendar permission.

Google Calendar: keep unknown senders off the calendar

Google Calendar has the clearest control for this problem. The Only if the sender is known option prevents an invitation from an unfamiliar sender from being added automatically. Google defines a known sender as someone in your contacts, someone in your organization, or someone you have interacted with previously.

Change the setting on a computer

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. Select Settings, then select Settings again.
  3. Under General, select Event settings.
  4. Find Add invitations to my calendar.
  5. Choose Only if the sender is known.

With that choice, invitations from contacts, people in your organization, and people you have previously interacted with can be added automatically. An invitation from an unknown sender is not placed on the calendar unless you accept it. Google still sends an email about the invitation, so this setting keeps the event off your schedule but does not block the email itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Known” is broader than “someone saved in my phone.” A sender may qualify because they belong to your organization or because you exchanged messages with them before. Conversely, a legitimate new customer, vendor, or school contact may be treated as unknown until you add them or interact with them.

Use the stricter response-required option

Select When I respond to the invitation in email when you do not want any invitation added until you respond to its email notification. This is more restrictive than the known-sender setting: even an invitation from a trusted contact waits for your response.

This option is useful when a calendar must reflect only commitments you have actively accepted. It also means that routine invitations from colleagues will not appear automatically; you need to open the notification and respond. If you overlook the email, the event remains absent from the calendar.

How Google’s choices compare

Google setting When an invitation is added What happens to an unknown invitation Best fit
Only if the sender is known Automatically for contacts, people in your organization, or people you have previously interacted with It remains off the calendar until you accept it; Google sends an invitation email Keep routine invitations from trusted people convenient while screening unfamiliar senders
When I respond to the invitation in email Only after you respond to the invitation email No invitation is added before your response Require a deliberate decision for every invitation
From everyone All invitations sent directly to your email address Unknown invitations can be added automatically Convenience when unsolicited invitations are not a concern

Google warns that the known-senders choice can reveal to an unknown sender that they are not in your contacts. That is a privacy trade-off to consider if you communicate with people who are not yet saved in your address book. The sender may infer that the invitation was not automatically accepted, although they do not gain access to your contact list.

Change it on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Google Calendar app.
  2. Open Menu, then Settings.
  3. Choose General.
  4. Choose Adding invitations.
  5. Under Add invitations to my calendar, select Only if the sender is known or When I respond to the invitation in email.

Work and school accounts can have fewer choices because an administrator may enforce an organization policy. If you use Apple’s Calendar app to view a Google account, make the change in the Google Calendar app or website; changing Apple’s notification display does not change Google’s invitation rule.

What Google’s setting does not do

It does not remove existing events

Google says invitation-addition settings apply only to new invitations. Changing the setting will not clean up events that are already on the calendar. Open an existing unwanted event and use the removal or spam-report action offered for that event. Treat that cleanup as a separate task from changing the default for future invitations.

If several spam events already exist, inspect each one before deleting it. A legitimate event may have been created by a trusted organizer before you changed the setting. Removing an event from your view is not the same as blocking the organizer for future mail.

It does not stop invitation email

Under Only if the sender is known, an unfamiliar invitation can still generate an email. Accepting that invitation is what adds it to the calendar. If the email itself is the nuisance, report or filter the message in your email service as well; the calendar setting alone is not an email block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not click links in a suspicious invitation merely to decline it. Open the message through your normal mail client, verify the sender and event details, and use the provider’s spam or report controls when available. The calendar preference protects the schedule, not the inbox.

It may not be the only source of an Android spam event

If spam events continue to appear on an Android device after you select Only if the sender is known, Google recommends reviewing which apps have access to the calendar. An app with calendar-write permission can create events independently of invitation handling. Remove access for apps you no longer trust or need, then check whether new events still appear.

Review both the Android app-permission list and the connected-app access in your Google Account. A booking, productivity, or conferencing app may be creating entries as part of its normal integration. Revoke access only when you understand what feature will stop working, then test with a new event.

Limit who can see pending invitations

Google Calendar has a separate privacy control under Event settings: Let others see all invitations if they have permission to view or edit my events. Turn this off if you do not want people who can view or edit your events to see pending invitations that are not yet visible on your calendar. This limits visibility; it does not block the invitation or stop the sender from emailing you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Workspace accounts: when the option is missing

In a managed Google Workspace account, an administrator can set the default invitation behavior and the least restrictive option users are allowed to select. The organization policy can permit invitations from everyone, only known senders, or only invitations to which the user has responded by email. If the control is unavailable, greyed out, or offers fewer choices than a personal account, ask your Workspace administrator which policy applies.

The account administrator’s policy and your personal setting work together. You can select an option only within the range your organization allows, so repeatedly searching the personal Calendar menu will not override an enforced rule. Administrators can also change the default for the organization, so a setting that was available yesterday may later be replaced by a company-wide rule.

Outlook: separate email-derived events from meeting requests

Outlook does not document a single consumer setting that universally rejects every meeting invitation from an unknown person. Start by determining whether the unwanted item is a true meeting request or an event Outlook created from information in an email.

Turn off “Events from email” only for email-created items

Outlook on the web and Outlook.com provide Events from email under Settings → Calendar → Events from email. This feature can create calendar entries from supported email content, including some travel bookings and delivery information. Microsoft documents it separately from meeting requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Outlook on the web or Outlook.com.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Calendar.
  4. Open Events from email.
  5. Review or disable the categories of email-derived events you do not want Outlook to create.

Disabling this feature can stop supported booking or delivery messages from producing calendar entries. It is not a guaranteed fix for an unsolicited meeting request sent through the calendar invitation system. Availability can vary by region, account plan, and Microsoft account type.

For example, turning off travel-event extraction may prevent a flight confirmation from becoming a calendar item, but it does not necessarily reject a meeting request addressed to your Outlook mailbox. Diagnose the source first so you do not lose useful travel or delivery reminders while spam invitations continue.

Block a sender for mail handling

In the new Outlook for Windows, blocking an address or domain sends that sender’s messages to Junk Email. This is an email-handling measure. Microsoft’s instructions do not promise that it prevents every unsolicited meeting request from reaching a calendar, so do not use sender blocking as a guaranteed calendar-invite filter.

The new Outlook for Windows instructions apply to Microsoft accounts. If the account is a third-party mailbox such as Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud added to Outlook, use that provider’s own mail-blocking controls instead. Blocking a sender in Outlook’s interface may not propagate to the third-party service that actually receives the invitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Outlook troubleshooting needs more detail

Outlook behavior depends on the product version, account type, and whether the item came from an email parser or a meeting request. Before changing settings, check the event’s details and the account listed for its calendar. If it is a meeting request and there is no sender-filter control in your version, use the message’s junk or reporting tools and remove the event individually rather than assuming that Events from email will solve it.

Do not copy a setting name from a forum post into a different Outlook edition. Microsoft’s web, new Windows, classic Windows, Mac, and mobile products can expose different controls. If the account is managed by an employer, the administrator may also control mail-flow rules. When the sender is repeatedly abusive, provide the full message headers to the administrator or mail provider rather than relying only on a calendar deletion.

iCloud Calendar: report a received invitation as junk

Apple documents invitation delivery choices rather than a known-senders-only filter. iCloud Calendar invitations can arrive as in-app notifications or by email. The delivery choice applies across devices signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Calendar enabled.

Choose how invitations arrive

Review your iCloud Calendar invitation settings and choose whether invitations should be delivered through notifications in the Calendar app or through email. This changes where you receive the invitation; it does not create a sender allowlist that automatically rejects unknown people. If you switch from notifications to email, the invitation is still delivered and still requires judgment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Report Junk for a spam invitation

  1. Open iCloud.com/calendar and sign in with the Apple Account that owns the calendar.
  2. Open the suspicious invitation.
  3. Choose Report Junk.

Apple says reporting the invitation automatically removes the event from calendars on all devices signed in to that Apple Account. Use this action for an invitation that is clearly spam rather than for a legitimate event from a new contact. If you only delete the event without reporting it, you may not provide Apple with the spam signal associated with the invitation.

Because the removal is account-wide, check that you are signed in to the Apple Account that owns the calendar. A separate work or family account may still show its own copy if it received the invitation independently.

A provider-by-provider troubleshooting path

  1. Find the owning account. Inspect the event’s calendar name or account, especially when several calendars are displayed in one app.
  2. Classify the item. Decide whether it is a calendar invitation, an email-derived event, or an event written by an app with calendar permission.
  3. For Google Calendar, choose the appropriate addition rule. Use Only if the sender is known for trusted-contact convenience, or When I respond to the invitation in email for a response-required workflow.
  4. Handle the email separately. Unknown Google invitations can still arrive by email, even when they stay off the calendar. Use your mail service’s spam and blocking tools if message delivery is the problem.
  5. Clean up old events individually. Google’s new-invitation setting is not retroactive. Remove or report existing spam events from their event controls.
  6. Check account administration. If a Google Workspace option is missing, ask the administrator which invitation policy is enforced.
  7. Check app access on Android. If events keep appearing after the Google setting is correct, review calendar permissions for installed apps.
  8. For Outlook, classify the item. Disable Events from email only when email-derived entries are the source; use junk handling for blocked mail, without assuming it rejects all meeting requests.
  9. For iCloud, report the event. Use Report Junk at iCloud.com/calendar so Apple removes that spam event from the account’s signed-in devices.
  10. Test with a new invitation. Settings generally govern future invitations. Send a test from a trusted and an unfamiliar address, when appropriate, to confirm which account and rule are active.

Choosing the least disruptive protection

For most personal Google calendars, Only if the sender is known is the practical starting point: invitations from contacts, your organization, and people you have already interacted with continue to appear automatically, while unfamiliar invitations wait for acceptance. Choose When I respond to the invitation in email if even trusted invitations must be reviewed before they can occupy a calendar slot.

Use the response-required option when calendar accuracy is more important than convenience, such as when an automatically added event could trigger reminders, sharing, or scheduling conflicts. Use known-senders-only when you regularly receive legitimate invitations from colleagues and do not want to approve each one manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outlook users should first determine whether the entry was generated from email content or delivered as a meeting request, because the documented controls address those different mechanisms. iCloud users should use its delivery preference and Report Junk action rather than looking for a Google-style known-sender filter that Apple does not document.

No provider offers a reason to buy a new device or calendar accessory for this problem. The effective remedies are account settings, mail controls, permission review, and reporting the specific spam event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Google Calendar’s “Only if the sender is known” setting block the invitation email?

No. It keeps an unknown invitation off the calendar until you accept it, but Google can still send an email notification. Use your email provider’s spam or blocking controls if you also want to reduce those messages.

Does changing Google’s invitation setting remove spam events already on my calendar?

No. The setting applies to new invitations. Open existing unwanted events and use their remove or report-spam controls separately.

What counts as a known sender in Google Calendar?

Google describes known senders as people in your contacts, people in your organization, or people you have interacted with previously.

Why can’t I find the Google Calendar invitation option on my work account?

A Google Workspace administrator can set the default and restrict the least permissive choice users may select. Ask your administrator which invitation policy applies.

Does Outlook’s “Events from email” setting block meeting invitations?

Not necessarily. It controls calendar entries created from supported email content, such as some travel or delivery messages. Microsoft documents it separately from meeting requests.

If I block an Outlook sender, will all of that person’s calendar invites stop?

Blocking sends the sender’s messages to Junk Email, but Microsoft does not promise that it rejects every unsolicited meeting request. Treat it as mail handling, not a universal calendar filter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does iCloud Calendar have a Google-style known-sender filter?

Apple’s documented controls provide invitation delivery choices and a Report Junk action, but they do not describe a known-senders-only filter.

How do I remove an iCloud spam invitation from all my devices?

At iCloud.com/calendar, open the invitation and choose Report Junk. Apple says reporting automatically removes the event from calendars on devices signed in to that Apple Account.

What if spam events keep appearing on Android after I changed Google Calendar?

Review which installed apps have calendar access. An app with permission to write events can create entries independently of invitation handling.

The Bottom Line

For Google Calendar, choose Only if the sender is known to keep unfamiliar invitations off the calendar, or When I respond to the invitation in email to review every invitation first. These choices affect new events and do not stop invitation email. Outlook requires you to distinguish email-derived events from meeting requests, while iCloud’s documented remedy for a received spam invitation is Report Junk.
