What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The reliable way to stop WooCommerce bots is layered protection: measure the traffic, filter obvious automation at the CDN or WAF edge, rate-limit abusive endpoints, then add CAPTCHA and payment-fraud controls where customers submit sensitive forms. This combination reduces server load before requests reach WordPress while still allowing search crawlers, payment services, and genuine shoppers to work.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Do not begin by blocking every unfamiliar user agent or IP address. Automation changes quickly, shared networks can contain real customers, and an over-broad rule can break checkout. Start in monitoring or challenge mode, review events, and convert only well-understood patterns to hard blocks.

A bot is software that sends requests to your store without a person operating each request. Some bots are useful, such as verified search crawlers and integrations that synchronize orders. Others scrape products, test stolen credentials, hold inventory, create fake accounts, submit fake orders, or test stolen payment cards. Cloudflare describes bots as automated software that can scrape content, stuff stolen credentials into login forms, hoard inventory, and inflate server costs.
The damage is not limited to a few bad orders. Repeated requests consume PHP workers, database connections, object-cache space, and hosting bandwidth. Login and registration attacks can trigger account lockouts or password-reset email floods. Checkout automation can create failed payments, reserve stock, and produce chargebacks or manual-review work.

Each control operates at a different point and sees different evidence:
| Control | Where it runs | What it detects | Customer friction | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CDN or WAF filtering | Before WordPress, at the network edge | Request behavior, IP reputation, bot signals, and (on eligible plans) bot scores | Usually silent; can issue a managed challenge or block | Stopping volume before it consumes store resources |
| Rate limiting | Edge rules and WooCommerce account endpoints | Excessive requests to a path, IP, or account identity during a time window | Only affects clients exceeding the limit | Brute force, scraping bursts, and repeated API or login calls |
| CAPTCHA | WordPress forms and checkout | Whether a form submission appears human | Visible or managed challenge at selected forms | Login, registration, password reset, comments, and checkout abuse |
| Fraud controls | WooCommerce order and payment workflow | Order attempts, failed payments, risk signals, and repeat behavior | May delay, reject, or review an order | Fake orders and card-testing attacks |
Using only one layer leaves an obvious gap. A CAPTCHA does not prevent a bot from consuming server resources on product pages, while an edge block cannot judge whether a payment attempt is fraudulent after a shopper has passed the edge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMeasure the traffic before writing a block rule
First establish what is happening and which customers could be affected. Use your CDN or WAF bot analytics and your web-server, WordPress, and WooCommerce logs to answer five questions:
- What percentage of requests are classified as automated, and when do bursts occur?
- Which paths receive the requests: login, registration, password reset, product pages, cart, checkout, or an API endpoint?
- Do requests come from a small set of addresses, many rotating addresses, or a shared proxy network?
- Are the requests reading pages, submitting forms, creating accounts, or causing failed payments?
- Which legitimate crawlers, payment callbacks, warehouse systems, and marketing integrations must continue to reach the site?
Cloudflare recommends selecting bot controls according to observed traffic patterns and the capabilities of your plan. Record a baseline for at least a normal busy period and, if possible, a quiet period. Note request volume, response status codes, challenge rates, login failures, orders, failed payments, and checkout conversion. A baseline lets you distinguish a successful mitigation from a rule that merely hides a problem by blocking everyone.
Put an edge control in front of WordPress
Edge filtering is the highest-leverage step because unwanted requests are challenged or rejected before they reach PHP and WooCommerce. Cloudflare offers progressively more granular bot controls; product names and available settings depend on the account plan.

| Cloudflare option | Capabilities described by Cloudflare | When it fits | Limitation to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bot Fight Mode | A simple, domain-wide challenge toggle for suspected bot traffic | A quick first layer when you need broad protection with minimal configuration | Domain-wide behavior is less precise than endpoint rules and can require careful exception testing |
| Super Bot Fight Mode | Actions by bot category, verified-bot allowlisting, static-resource protection, and bot analytics | Stores that need more control over categories and visibility into what is being challenged | Review category actions so useful crawlers and required integrations are not interrupted |
| Enterprise Bot Management | Per-request bot scores, endpoint-specific handling, and detailed analytics | High-volume ecommerce or security-sensitive stores that need granular decisions | Enterprise availability and cost apply; configuration requires ongoing analysis |
Deploy the edge layer safely
- Place the store’s DNS traffic behind the CDN and verify that the origin is not directly exposed through an alternate hostname or old address.
- Open the provider’s bot-management or security dashboard and inspect automated traffic before enabling a broad action.
- Start with a managed challenge or monitoring-oriented action when you are not certain that a pattern is malicious.
- Test storefront browsing, login, registration, cart, checkout, payment callbacks, administrative access, and every external integration your store requires.
- Review security events and support reports. Tighten the action only after confirming that legitimate traffic is passing.
Keep an explicit allowlist for verified bots and services you depend on. A verified crawler should be identified using the provider’s verification mechanism rather than a user-agent string alone, which can be forged. Payment gateways, tax services, fulfillment tools, and uptime monitors may also need narrowly scoped exceptions.
Create targeted WAF rules and rate limits
Use custom WAF rules when the logs show a repeatable path or behavior. A rule should describe the smallest useful target: an authentication endpoint receiving a burst of attempts, an API route being scraped, or a checkout pattern that is clearly abusive. Avoid a rule that blocks an entire country, browser type, or unfamiliar user-agent unless your business case and logs justify that scope.
Choose the action by confidence
- Monitor or log: Use this while validating a new expression and measuring how many legitimate requests match.
- Managed challenge: Use when automation is likely but a real customer may occasionally match. The edge can verify the client without sending every shopper to a visible puzzle.
- Block: Use for a pattern you have confirmed as abusive. Blocking at the edge prevents later processing and protects origin capacity.
Rule order matters. A block action can stop later rules from being evaluated, so put allow or exception logic where it is effective for the traffic you intend to preserve, then order restrictive rules deliberately. After every change, inspect the event log for both matched and skipped requests.
Rate-limit behavior, not just addresses
Rate limits are most useful when attached to a behavior or endpoint: repeated login attempts, registration submissions, password resets, API calls, or checkout requests. A limit that applies to every page view can punish a family, office, or mobile carrier sharing one address while doing little against a distributed botnet. Conversely, a limit based only on an address can miss an attack that rotates addresses.
Define the identity, path, method, counting window, and response for each limit. Keep the window and threshold proportional to the action: account authentication can tolerate far fewer attempts than product browsing. Use a challenge or temporary response while tuning; convert to a hard block when event data shows that the threshold cleanly separates abuse from normal use.

Enable WooCommerce account rate limiting
WooCommerce includes account-focused rate limiting for authentication forms. Its documentation states that the feature blocks excessive requests and protects against brute-force attacks by limiting how many requests a single IP address can make within a time window.
Exact settings path
- In WordPress administration, open WooCommerce → Settings → Accounts & Privacy.
- Open the Customer Accounts section and locate Rate Limiting.
- Set the request limit and time window based on your observed login, registration, and password-reset traffic. Treat any displayed default as a version-specific example, not a universal recommendation.
- Save the settings and test successful and failed authentication from a normal customer session.
WooCommerce tracks unauthenticated requests by IP address and logged-in requests by user ID. That distinction matters: a shared public address can contain many unauthenticated shoppers, while a compromised account can generate requests under one user identity.
Correct client-IP handling behind a proxy
A reverse proxy, load balancer, CDN, or page cache can hide the visitor’s address from WordPress. If every request appears to come from the proxy, WooCommerce may rate-limit all shoppers together or fail to distinguish attackers. Enable WooCommerce’s basic proxy support so forwarded headers can be used, and configure the trusted proxy correctly. Do not blindly trust arbitrary client-supplied forwarding headers; only the infrastructure you control should be allowed to assert the original address. Re-test from more than one network after changing this setting.
Protect checkout and payment attempts
Checkout automation requires controls beyond page and login filtering. Attackers can submit fake orders, run card-testing attempts, or repeat failed payments until a gateway flags the merchant account. WooCommerce Anti-Fraud documentation describes controls that address this stage:

- Fraud-risk scoring.
- Order whitelisting and blacklisting.
- Limits on order attempts.
- Limits on failed payments.
- Time-based limits that restrict repeated activity during a defined period.
Apply checkout controls without creating duplicate challenges
- Review the checkout page, theme, and installed extensions to identify any CAPTCHA already present.
- Choose one supported challenge mechanism for checkout rather than stacking multiple CAPTCHA widgets.
- Set order-attempt and failed-payment limits based on gateway logs and normal customer behavior.
- Use risk scoring and review actions for borderline orders; reserve an outright rejection for patterns you can explain to support staff and customers.
- Whitelist trusted customers or business integrations only when their identity and traffic path are clear.
WooCommerce documentation specifically advises avoiding duplicate CAPTCHA challenges when another extension or theme already supplies one. Two independent challenges can make checkout fail, reduce accessibility, and still leave an unprotected API or payment path.

Add CAPTCHA to the forms that logs show are abused
CAPTCHA is a form-level control, not a replacement for edge filtering. WooCommerce’s reCAPTCHA documentation covers login, registration, password reset, checkout, comments, and other forms. Enable it where abuse is visible rather than placing a challenge on every page.
Prioritize in this order
- Login: Add a challenge when credential-stuffing attempts persist after rate limiting.
- Registration: Protect account creation if bots are generating spam users, fake reviews, or promotional abuse.
- Password reset: Add friction when attackers are flooding reset requests or probing whether accounts exist.
- Checkout: Use a supported challenge together with payment and order-attempt controls.
- Comments and other forms: Protect only if logs show automated submissions; keep low-risk interactions frictionless when possible.
Test keyboard navigation, mobile checkout, failed challenge recovery, and payment callbacks. A CAPTCHA that works in a desktop browser but blocks a mobile or assistive-technology user is an operational failure even if bot volume falls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preserve legitimate crawlers and integrations
Blocking based solely on a user-agent string is unsafe because it is easy to copy. Prefer verified-bot mechanisms supplied by the edge provider, and document every exception. Maintain a list of:
Recommended Free Tools
- Verified search and indexing crawlers that should read public product pages.
- Payment-provider callbacks and webhook endpoints.
- Shipping, tax, inventory, and fulfillment integrations.
- Monitoring services and internal automation used by staff.
- Trusted customer or partner systems with a defined source range and purpose.
Scope exceptions to the smallest path and method necessary. An integration that needs a webhook should not automatically bypass protection on login, cart, or checkout pages. Revalidate exceptions after changing DNS, hosting, plugins, or payment providers.
A practical rollout plan
Use this sequence to reduce risk and make each change measurable.
Best Value
- Inventory: List storefront, account, cart, checkout, API, webhook, and administrative paths. Record every legitimate automated client.
- Baseline: Capture bot analytics, WAF events, authentication failures, failed payments, order attempts, server load, and checkout conversion.
- Edge first: Enable the least disruptive Cloudflare bot control that matches the observed traffic. Use analytics to identify categories and scores where available.
- Targeted rules: Add WAF expressions and endpoint rate limits for confirmed patterns. Begin with monitoring or managed challenges.
- WooCommerce accounts: Configure native account rate limiting and correct proxy support if a CDN or load balancer masks addresses.
- Checkout: Add one CAPTCHA mechanism and configure fraud scoring, order-attempt, failed-payment, whitelist, blacklist, and time-based controls as needed.
- Expand forms selectively: Add CAPTCHA to login, registration, reset, comments, or other forms only where logs show abuse.
- Verify: Run real customer journeys and integration tests, then compare security events, conversion, failed payments, and support contacts with the baseline.
- Enforce: Convert a managed challenge to a block only when the matched traffic is consistently malicious and your exceptions work.
Troubleshooting common failures
Real shoppers see challenges or blocks
Inspect the matched rule, not just the visitor’s IP. A shared carrier, office, VPN, or privacy relay can make many people look identical. Narrow the path or method, lower the sensitivity, use a managed challenge, and add a verified exception only when you can establish the service’s identity.
All visitors appear to come from one IP
The origin is probably seeing a CDN, reverse proxy, or load balancer address. Configure trusted forwarded-header handling and WooCommerce basic proxy support. Confirm that the proxy overwrites, rather than simply passes through, client-IP headers that an attacker could forge.
Checkout fails after CAPTCHA is enabled
Check for a second CAPTCHA supplied by the theme or another extension, then remove the duplicate. Review browser-console errors, challenge completion, gateway callbacks, and caching rules. Exclude payment callbacks from page challenges while keeping customer-facing checkout protected.
Blocks do not reduce server load
The rule may be running inside WordPress rather than at the edge, or the attacker may be using a different path. Compare origin logs with edge events, check whether DNS is fully proxied, and identify the endpoint receiving the requests. Move high-volume filtering to the CDN/WAF where possible.
Orders still contain card-testing attempts
Review failed-payment and order-attempt counts, not only successful orders. Tighten those limits, use fraud-risk scoring, and inspect whether the attacker is rotating accounts or addresses. Keep payment-provider and fulfillment exceptions narrowly scoped so they do not bypass checkout controls for public clients.
How to compare protection choices
| Question | Edge bot controls | WAF rate limits | WooCommerce rate limiting | CAPTCHA and anti-fraud |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Where does it run? | CDN or WAF edge | Usually CDN or WAF edge | WordPress and WooCommerce | WordPress forms and order workflow |
| Primary signal | Bot behavior, verified status, and (on eligible plans) score | Path, method, identity, and request frequency | IP for unauthenticated requests; user ID for logged-in requests | Human interaction, order risk, attempts, and payment failures |
| Granularity | Domain-wide to endpoint-specific, depending on product | Endpoint and expression based | Authentication forms and configured account limits | Individual forms, checkout, and orders |
| Typical shopper friction | Silent detection, managed challenge, or block | None until a threshold is exceeded; then challenge or block | Request denial after the threshold | Visible or managed challenge; possible order review or rejection |
| Observability | Bot analytics and security events vary by plan | Rule and rate-limit events | WooCommerce request handling and authentication logs | Challenge results, order records, gateway failures, and fraud signals |
| Plan or extension requirement | Cloudflare product and account plan determine features | Available rules and limits depend on the WAF plan | Availability and labels can vary by WooCommerce version | Requires the relevant WooCommerce feature or extension and CAPTCHA provider account |
What to monitor after deployment
Review changes after each layer rather than enabling everything at once. Track:
- Origin CPU, memory, PHP worker saturation, database load, and bandwidth.
- Requests challenged and blocked, grouped by rule, path, country, and bot category where available.
- Login, registration, and password-reset failures.
- Cart abandonment, checkout conversion, challenge completion, and support complaints.
- Order attempts, failed payments, fraud scores, chargebacks, and false-positive reviews.
- Successful requests from verified crawlers, payment callbacks, and business integrations.
Keep a change log with the rule, threshold, date, reason, and observed result. Revisit limits after seasonal campaigns, product launches, hosting changes, and plugin updates because legitimate traffic patterns change. The goal is not the highest block count; it is lower abusive load and payment risk without preventing a real customer from completing an order.
