To report a suspicious WhatsApp sender, open the chat or the sender’s contact information and choose Report. If you also want to stop their direct messages and calls, select the option to block them before submitting. Reporting sends information to WhatsApp for review; reporting alone does not stop contact.
Report and block do different things

WhatsApp’s controls can appear in the chat menu or the contact-information screen, and labels vary among Android, iPhone, Web, Mac, and Windows versions. Follow the in-app prompts if your screen differs from the route below.

How to report and block a suspicious sender
- Open the chat with the person, business, or unknown number. If there is no chat yet, open the message or conversation where the number contacted you.
- Open the sender’s contact information, or open the chat menu. On WhatsApp for Windows, the documented route is Chats > the contact’s chat > the contact’s name > Report.
- Choose Report. When prompted, select the option to block the sender as well if you want to stop direct messages, calls, and status updates.
- Review the prompt and submit the report.
You can report without blocking if you want WhatsApp to review the account but still want to receive direct contact. A blocked sender’s messages sent while the block is active are not delivered later if you unblock them. If the same person contacts you from another number, you can block and report that number separately.

A WhatsApp group itself cannot be blocked. Instead, choose what to report: a specific message, a member, or the whole group. The available controls and labels vary by app version.

Report one message or a member
Use the controls beside the suspicious message to choose Report. WhatsApp’s group-safety flow may also let you block the member who sent it. Reporting a message or member is distinct from reporting the entire group.
Report the whole group
Report the group from its group information or the relevant in-app menu. Reporting a group removes you from it; joining again requires an invitation from a group admin. If you leave and report, you can separately block an admin or member.

Warning signs to check before responding
These signs can indicate a scam or suspicious message, but none proves on its own that the sender is fraudulent:

- Typos or unusual grammar.
- A link asking you to activate a feature or download an app.
- A request for personal or financial information, or to forward a message.
- A demand for money or a claim that you must pay WhatsApp.
- Someone pretending to be a person you know.
- Lottery, gambling, job, investment, or loan claims that seem too good to be true.
- A conversation designed to build trust before asking for information or money.
A suspicious message from someone you know could mean their account has been compromised. Verify an unusual request through a separate trusted channel before sending money or sensitive information. For a first message from an unknown person, WhatsApp may show shared groups and the country associated with the sender’s phone number. If you are uncertain who they are, WhatsApp suggests verifying their identity with personal questions or a voice or video call; you can also report, block, or delete the message.

What WhatsApp receives when you report
According to WhatsApp’s Help Center, an individual chat report can include up to five of the last messages sent by that user. If there was a call, basic information about up to the last five calls may also be included, such as who initiated each call and its duration. A group report can include up to five recent messages sent to you in that group. WhatsApp also receives the reported account or group ID, when a message was sent, and its type, such as text, image, or video.
The reported person or group is not notified. WhatsApp says it may ban an account if it believes the activity violates its terms, but a report does not guarantee a ban or any other action. WhatsApp says the in-app reporting process is the way to report someone; contacting WhatsApp outside that process will not speed up review or change the decision. After acknowledging receipt, WhatsApp says it will not contact the reporting user again.

Keep a record and get urgent help when needed
- If you may need a record, take screenshots of relevant messages, calls, or profile details and back up a copy of the chat history.
- If you feel unsafe or believe a crime occurred, contact local law enforcement or the appropriate authorities.
- If there is immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
