In Google Messages on Android, touch and hold the unwanted conversation, tap Block, choose Report spam, and confirm. Reporting is optional: choose Block and confirm by itself when you want to stop the sender without sending a spam report. A reported thread moves to Spam & blocked, and the sender is blocked.
Blocking and reporting are different actions
Blocking stops messages from that conversation from appearing in your inbox. Reporting spam sends information about the conversation to Google to improve spam detection and also blocks the sender. Google combines both choices in one menu, but you do not have to report a message in order to block it. The distinction matters when a text is unwanted but not clearly spam, or when you do not want to share message information with Google.

Before you report: choose the least-surprising action
Check who sent the text and what outcome you want. A known person who used the wrong number may need only a block. A fake delivery notice, credential request, or other suspected scam is a sensible candidate for both blocking and reporting. A legitimate retailer or service may offer Unsubscribe, which sends an opt-out request rather than a spam report.

Do not tap links, call numbers, or provide one-time verification codes while deciding. You can leave the conversation unopened, select it from the conversation list, and take action without replying. If the content may be illegal or presents an immediate danger, use the harmful-content route and contact the appropriate authority rather than treating an ordinary spam report as an emergency report.
How to report spam and block the sender on Android
From the conversation list
- Open Google Messages.
- On the list of conversations, touch and hold the unwanted thread.
- Tap Block.
- Select Report spam.
- Tap OK to confirm.
Google says the sender is blocked and the thread is moved to Spam & blocked. New messages from that sender should no longer appear in the regular inbox. The report and block happen together when you select the report option; there is no need to send a separate reply to the sender.
From inside an open conversation
- Open the conversation.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Details.
- Tap Block & report spam.
- Tap OK.
The two routes perform the same report-and-block action. Menu names or their position can differ slightly on a manufacturer-customized Android build or in a different Messages version, but the conversation details page and the Spam & blocked folder are the most reliable places to look.
How to block a number without reporting it
If you simply want to stop contact and do not want to submit a spam report, use blocking alone:
- Touch and hold the conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap Block.
- Confirm with OK without selecting the report option.
This is useful for a persistent person you know, a legitimate sender using the wrong number, or any message that is unwanted but does not meet your definition of spam. Blocking prevents the conversation from appearing in the inbox; it does not send the sender’s messages to Google as a spam report. Blocking is a local control in Messages, so it is the appropriate choice when notification and inbox control are your only goals.
How to unblock a number and restore the conversation
- Open Google Messages and tap your profile picture or account icon.
- Tap Spam & blocked. If that item is not immediately visible, tap More options first.
- Select the contact or conversation you want to restore.
- Tap Unblock.
Google says unblocking removes the spam report and returns the conversation to the Home screen. Messages sent while the sender was blocked are not necessarily delivered later, so unblocking should be treated as allowing future messages rather than recovering every missed text. If a sender uses multiple numbers, you may need to unblock each listed conversation separately.
What Google receives when you report a conversation
A spam report is not limited to a simple “this is spam” label. Google says the report includes the spammer’s phone number and the last 10 incoming messages from that conversation. Those messages can contain sender numbers and timestamps. For RCS conversations, the report may also include RCS message IDs, an RCS group ID, the group name, and remote participants’ profile names and phone numbers when those details are part of the conversation.

Your previous replies are not sent as part of the report. Google also says your name and phone number are not linked to the spammer’s messages, and the spammer cannot see that you made the report. Employees and contractors may review reports, and reported conversations may be used to train artificial-intelligence models that improve spam and abuse protection. What “last 10 incoming messages” means
The documented limit refers to incoming messages in the reported conversation, not a promise that the entire chat history is uploaded. Your outgoing replies are excluded, but incoming content can still contain information about other people. In a group RCS chat, group identifiers and participant details may accompany the messages. Review the conversation and choose block-only if that information-sharing is not acceptable for your situation.
A carrier report may be created separately
Google says a report might create a separate conversation named Spam reporting. That conversation can send the sender’s number and the most recent text message to your mobile carrier. The carrier handoff is conditional, so you should not assume that every report creates one or that every carrier handles it identically. Seeing this conversation does not mean the spammer was notified; Google says the spammer cannot see your report.
Automatic spam protection in Google Messages
Manual reporting is separate from Google Messages’ automatic spam protection. Google says spam protection is turned on automatically and that Messages shows a notification when it is enabled. If the feature is available on your device, its control is at Profile picture or icon > Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Spam protection.

On-device machine-learning models can identify known spam patterns, and URL checks may upload links to Google so they can be evaluated for malicious behavior. On-device detection can work without a data connection. Google also says that, in some cases, unencrypted message content may be processed ephemerally to detect spam and improve its models. RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted when RCS is enabled, according to Google’s explanation of spam-detection privacy.
The spam-protection switch is not guaranteed to appear on every phone or in every region. If you cannot find it, your device or account may not offer that control, or your Messages build may use different menu wording. Automatic filtering does not replace manually blocking a sender you recognize, and a manual report remains optional.
When to use Unsubscribe for business texts
Some business conversations show an Unsubscribe control. Selecting it sends STOP to the business sender. This is intended for legitimate marketing or service messages that you once wanted but no longer need; it is not a replacement for blocking a scammer.

Google says essential messages may still arrive after you unsubscribe. Availability depends on both the message type and your country. For RCS for Business, Google lists the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. For SMS or MMS, Google lists US short codes and alphanumeric senders. If the message is clearly fraudulent, or if you want to stop all messages from that sender, use Block and optionally Report spam instead of replying.

Unsubscribe and block solve different problems. STOP tells an eligible business system that you no longer want its messages; block prevents the conversation from appearing in your Messages inbox. If a company operates several sender IDs, unsubscribing from one does not necessarily cover every distinct sender, while a block applies to the conversation you selected.
How to report harmful or illegal content
Ordinary spam reporting is designed for unwanted commercial messages, scams, and similar abuse. If a conversation contains content you believe violates local law or presents a serious safety issue, use the separate Report harmful content option in the conversation menu. Google opens a form-based report for that route and says you may also block or delete the conversation.
Google’s guidance does not treat the harmful-content form as an emergency service. For an immediate threat or suspected crime, contact local police or the appropriate authority. The dedicated harmful-content instructions are at Google Messages Help. Keep only the information you need for a complaint and follow local rules for preserving or sharing message evidence.
Using Google Messages for the web
On a computer, open the conversation in Google Messages for the web and use its More options menu to report spam. Google documents the desktop route in its computer instructions.

If Google Messages for the web is syncing with Google Fi, Google says to follow the Android instructions instead. That means using the conversation’s block and report controls as they appear in the phone app. If a menu is missing on the web, use the Android app, where Google’s primary blocking and reporting steps are documented.
Choosing the right response to a suspicious text
For a suspected scam or unknown sender
- Do not follow links, call numbers, or provide verification codes from the message.
- Use Block and Report spam if you want Google to receive a report.
- Use Block alone when stopping the sender is your only goal.
- Remember that a report includes the sender number and up to 10 incoming messages, plus possible RCS or group metadata.
For a legitimate business you no longer want to hear from
- Choose Unsubscribe when the control is available.
- Expect a
STOPmessage to be sent and remember that essential notices may continue. - If the sender ignores the opt-out or appears fraudulent, block and optionally report it.
For potentially unlawful or dangerous material
- Use Report harmful content for the dedicated form.
- Preserve information you may need for a formal complaint, subject to local law and safety considerations.
- Contact police or another appropriate authority when there is an immediate threat or suspected crime.
Troubleshooting missing controls
The Block or Report spam option is not visible
Open the conversation first, then check More options > Details. Google’s alternate route places Block & report spam there. If you still cannot find it, update Google Messages through your normal app-update channel and check whether another messaging app is set as the default SMS app. Menu labels can vary by app version and manufacturer customization.

The Spam & blocked folder is missing
Tap your profile picture or account icon and look for Spam & blocked. On some versions you must open More options to reveal it. Google notes that some blocking instructions require Android 7.0 or later, and customized Android interfaces can place the same item differently. The folder may become easier to locate after you have blocked or reported at least one conversation.
A message keeps arriving after you reported it
Confirm that you reported the correct thread and that the sender is shown in Spam & blocked. Businesses may use multiple numbers or sender IDs, so each distinct sender can require its own block. For an eligible business conversation, use Unsubscribe as well; that sends the sender a separate opt-out request. Do not assume that unsubscribing from one sender ID blocks every related number.

You are concerned about privacy
Remember that reporting sends the sender’s number and up to the last 10 incoming messages, with additional RCS or group metadata in some cases. Use block-only when you want to stop the conversation without making that report. Automatic spam protection has separate privacy behavior and may not expose the same setting on every device. Google says on-device detection can work without a data connection, while URL checks may upload links for safety evaluation.
What to expect after you take action
- After block only: the conversation is prevented from appearing in the inbox, with no spam report submitted through that action.
- After block and report: the sender is blocked, the thread moves to Spam & blocked, and Google receives the report data described above.
- After unblock: the spam report is removed and the conversation returns to the Home screen; future messages can arrive again.
- After unsubscribe: Google Messages sends
STOPto an eligible business sender, but essential messages may still be delivered. - After harmful-content reporting: a separate form is submitted, and you can still block or delete the conversation.
For most unwanted individual texts, the practical choice is straightforward: block the sender, and add the report only if you want to notify Google and accept the information-sharing described in its policy.

Google says the Spam protection control appears only when available on the device. Look under Profile picture or icon > Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Spam protection; wording can vary by device.
